Lisannia had been cooking since dawn.
Aegis knew because she'd come downstairs at dawn to sneak a biscuit and her mother had swatted her with a wooden spoon and told her to get out of the kitchen. By noon the whole farmhouse smelled like roasted meat and butter and something that might've been sugar burning in the best possible way. By the time the sun dipped, Lisannia was pulling dish after dish onto the table like she was trying to feed an army.
"Sit down," Lisannia said, gesturing at the chairs. "All of you. Before it gets cold."
Everyone sat.
The table was an ELITE spread. Roast chicken, potatoes, something in gravy, bread Lisannia had clearly kneaded within an inch of its life, greens from the garden, and pie.
Aaron appeared from the cellar with a bottle in each hand. He was already grinning. Aaron's grin before dinner meant dinner was about to get worse for someone.
"The strong stuff," he announced.
"Aaron, no," Lisannia said.
"Aaron, yes," Aaron said.
