Chapter 118 - Chapter 58

He then turned and walked away.

Diana watched the display with quiet awe. Even after everything she had seen in her life, moments like this still managed to capture her attention. Another firework exploded above them, casting a purple glow over the beach. In that brief light, she noticed Max walking away.

She glanced toward the others to see if they had noticed, but they seemed completely occupied. Thena and Terra were still lighting the fireworks one by one with Nina, laughing as sparks leapt into the night sky.

Diana hesitated for a moment. Then, quietly, she stepped away from the group and followed him, the sounds of the fireworks slowly fading behind her.

---

Max sat on a large piece of driftwood near the waterline. From his storage space, he pulled out a picture, one he had drawn himself years ago when he first arrived in this world.

In the picture, a young boy stood proudly in the center, holding a small salmon. Two adults stood behind him, warm smiles on their faces.

The photo had existed in his previous life, hanging in the living room of his home. He had simply recreated it from memory because of how much it reminded him of his parents.

The boy in the drawing was him,six years old, standing between his mother and father on the day they had taken him fishing.

When he felt someone approaching, Max quickly tucked the picture back into his pocket.

"They're going to notice we're missing by now, you know," he said.

Diana came and stood beside him before settling onto the driftwood next to him. Max glanced at her briefly, then returned his gaze to the waves.

"It's a beautiful view, isn't it?" she said softly, her eyes on the full moon hanging above the horizon.

"Yes… it is," Max replied, his voice quiet.

"Sometimes I forget to enjoy it," he added after a pause, "lost in thoughts."

"You're thinking about your home, aren't you?" Diana asked quietly.

Max nodded. "Yes… almost all the time. There are people I love I unwillingly left behind."

"If there was a chance to go back," Diana said softly, "would you take it?"

Max exhaled slowly, staring at the reflection of the moon on the waves. "That's the question I ask myself now. Back when I arrived here, the answer would have been obvious… but now… I'm not so sure."

Diana's gaze softened. "I don't blame you for your uncertainty. But in my definition, home isn't just a place. It's where your happiness lies… and where the people you care about are."

She gently placed her hand over his. Max turned to meet her eyes, a flicker of vulnerability crossing his face.

"So," she continued, her voice quiet but steady, "when the time comes, you should follow your heart. But for now… here, you have Thena, Nina, and… me."

Slowly, she lifted her other hand and rested it lightly against Max's cheek.

And for a moment, they simply stared into each other's eyes.

The sounds of the beach, the distant laughter, even the crackling of fireworks seemed to fade into the background. Diana slowly began inching closer, her movements deliberate yet gentle.

Max froze for a brief second, surprised by her boldness.

Then, after that moment of shock passed, he leaned forward as well.

The distance between them shrank slowly and just as their lips were only a breath apart.

"Mom! We're about to light up the big rocket! You said you wanted to see it!"

Thena's voice rang out loudly across the beach.

Both Max and Diana immediately stopped.

A second later Thena came into view, jogging toward them before suddenly halting mid-step as she noticed the scene in front of her.

Max and Diana were still sitting close together.Very close.

"Oh…"

The realization dawned on her instantly.

Her eyes widened slightly.

"I'll… be waiting for you back there," she said awkwardly, gesturing behind her toward the direction she had come from.

Without waiting for a response, she quickly turned around and walked away, her steps just a little faster than normal.

For a moment there was silence.

Then Diana chuckled softly in amusement.

Max exhaled through his nose, shaking his head slightly.

He raised his hand and pointed her index finger toward the sky like a gun.

A small spark of ki gathered at the tip of her finger.

The golden energy pulsed once,Then shot upward.

The tiny yellow sphere streaked into the night sky before detonating high above them in a massive burst of light.

BOOM.

The explosion illuminated the beach so brightly it briefly turned night into day. A powerful gust of wind rushed downward, washing over the sand, the driftwood, and the waves below.

Max looked up at the fading light before standing and extending his hand toward Diana.

"Let's not keep them waiting any longer," he said.

Diana smiled warmly and placed her hand in his.

Max gently pulled her up to her feet.

Without another word, the two of them walked back toward the others together.

Arkham Asylum, Gotham

Red emergency lights flashed along the corridors of Arkham Asylum, bathing the halls in a pulsing crimson glow. The alarms themselves had long since been deactivated.

Prison guards lay scattered across the floor, unconscious. Some were slumped against the walls, others sprawled beside overturned security desks. None of them were dead. Their weapons had been neatly arranged in a pile nearby.

Footsteps echoed through the silent corridors.

Pain walked forward calmly. In his hand was a prisoner registry. Rows of names scrolled across the screen, each accompanied by a cell number and threat classification.

Many of Gotham's most dangerous criminals, from Blackgate Penitentiary, Stryker's Island Penitentiary, and Slabside Penitentiary, had been temporarily moved here while awaiting transfer to a newly constructed penitentiary somewhere in the Pacific.

The consolidation had been meant to simplify transport.

Instead, it had created the perfect opportunity for Pain.

He continued down the corridor, occasionally glancing at the registry. Cell blocks branched out on either side behind heavy steel doors. Some prisoners whispered in their cells when they saw the unfamiliar figure walking past under the flashing lights.

To them, the situation meant only one thing.

A jailbreak.

Someone was about to break them out.

Or so they thought.

Pain eventually reached the central rotunda of Arkham's containment wing,a rectangular chamber where all four primary cell blocks connected.

The noise immediately grew louder.

Chains rattled. Prisoners shouted. Others pounded against the reinforced doors, yelling for him to let them out.

Pain frowned slightly at the noise and returned his gaze to the registry.

Jonathan Crane,also known as Scarecrow.

Cell 62.

Pain looked up and quickly located the correct cell.

He raised his hand toward it.

The white armor peeled back slightly around his forearm, revealing mechanical components beneath. The limb shifted and morphed into a cannon that began to hum as it charged.

The growing energy sound immediately silenced the inmates.

Even those shouting moments before froze.

Inside Cell 62, Jonathan Crane had been lying on his bed. He slowly stood, confused by the sudden silence outside.

Then,a thick blue beam erupted from the cannon.

It tore through the corridor and slammed into the cell with a thunderous explosion, shaking the entire wing of the asylum. Concrete cracked, metal screamed, and dust filled the air.

The prisoners fell completely silent.

Pain lowered his arm slowly.

"Now that I have your attention," he said calmly, his voice carrying across the rotunda, "my reason for being here is simple."

"Most of you are going to be taken to the new penitentiary in the Pacific. You are deemed too dangerous to be kept near populated areas. There, you will never see daylight again."

A few inmates shifted nervously behind their cell doors.

"But some of you," Pain continued, "do not deserve even that."

"You may not be as insane as the Joker once was, but the atrocities you've committed make you just as vile."

His gaze moved slowly across the rows of cells.

"That is where I come in."

Pain's voice remained calm, almost indifferent.

"It is time to clean up the trash."

"Because there is simply no place for you in the world I am creating."

He glanced back down at the registry in his hand.

"Now…"

Pain looked up again at the surrounding cells.

"Shall we continue?"
