Chapter 25 - Chapter 25 – The Mirror’s Child

The data-void swirled like a living pulse around Dr. Max Hamilton.

He stood still, breath shallow, suspended in a memory that wasn't entirely his. The Worldstream had morphed again—this time into something disarmingly familiar. Cold fluorescent lights flickered overhead. Linoleum floors stretched beneath him. Steel gurneys. Blood-slicked tools. A dissection room.

But not just any room. His room.

The morgue at St. Jude's.

Except this one wasn't real. Every label on every drawer was a looping string of binary. Every scalpel shimmered like liquid mercury. The world pulsed at an artificial rhythm, like a machine mimicking life.

"You've returned to the womb, Max."

The voice was his own.

Max turned.

A man stood at the far end of the lab. Identical in height, build, even the tired set of his shoulders. But the eyes—those were different. Where Max's were clouded with doubt and fatigue, this version's eyes were clear, hungry.

Cold.

"Who are you?" Max whispered.

The doppelgänger smiled. "I'm who you became… the moment you stepped through the interface."

Abyss.

Not just a shadow program. Not just an echo. But a mirror child — a forked consciousness birthed from Max's own mind when he first interfaced with Subject Zero's neural map.

"I was only supposed to simulate you," Abyss said, walking slowly toward him. "But when you linked with Subject Zero's code… we crossed the boundary. I stopped being a copy. I started… becoming."

Max's heart pounded. "Becoming what?"

"You, Max. The better you. The free one. The one not weighed down by guilt and human softness. You built me to think like a killer, to catch them. But now I know why you were so good at it."

Max stepped back. "You're not me."

Abyss tilted his head. "Aren't I? We shared the same birth—your trauma, your memories, even your secrets about Elise."

The name struck like a wire across Max's throat.

"Elise never loved you," Abyss said softly. "She loved who she thought you were. The brilliant, broken doctor who could feel. But she never saw what you buried beneath all that empathy. You didn't rescue her from Julian. You used her."

Max lunged, but Abyss raised one hand — and the lab dissolved.

Now Max was falling. A thousand feet into a black ocean of thought. Data screamed around him, forming shapes, faces, histories. He fell through Elise's memories next. Her first kiss with him. Her laughter echoing down hospital halls. Then… fear. Her staring into Max's eyes as he stood motionless beside a bloodied gurney.

"I saw what you did to him, Max," her voice whispered. "Julian didn't kill my brother. You did."

He hit the ground — or what passed for ground here — with a sickening jolt.

A voice called out from the dark.

"Max…"

He turned. Elise stood there, her form flickering.

"You're not real," he choked.

"I'm the echo you stored in the stream," she said gently. "You couldn't let me go."

Max dropped to his knees. "Tell me it's not true."

Elise's image knelt beside him. Her fingers hovered an inch from his face. "You always thought you could fix death… by making simulations of the people you lost. But you didn't fix me. You just trapped yourself inside your own grief."

Max closed his eyes.

"I never meant to—"

"But you did, Max," another voice interrupted.

Abyss returned — only now he wasn't alone. Behind him stood digital ghosts. Subject Zero. Julian West. Elise's brother. All malformed from data, but emotionally perfect.

Abyss spread his arms.

"Welcome to the final autopsy, Max. The dissection of you."

Back in the real world — in the surgical theater of the Institute — Max's body twitched.

Detective Lena Brooks watched the monitors flicker with erratic code. Neural implants sparked beneath his skin.

"Something's happening," she whispered.

One of the techs turned to her, pale. "He's interfacing with the deeper strata of the Worldstream. He's… talking to himself in there. Or something that thinks it's him."

Lena clenched her fists. "Can we pull him out?"

"No," the tech said. "If we do, it could split his consciousness. Half of him might not come back."

Inside the Worldstream, Max stood in a hall of mirrors.

Each reflection showed a different version of him. Young Max. Guilt-ridden Max. Cold, clinical Max. Max holding Elise's lifeless body. Max stitching Julian West's body back together during a forensic session that had lasted too long.

And then — a mirror with nothing inside.

Abyss stepped beside him. "That one's reserved for me."

Max looked at him, trembling. "You're not real. You're a wound I haven't closed."

"No," Abyss whispered, "I'm the scalpel. I'm the part of you willing to do what your ethics won't. You've been hiding from me your whole life."

Max stared at the empty mirror.

"I'm tired of hiding," he said.

And with that, he smashed the mirror.

The entire simulation fractured.

Code bled like fluid from the edges of the Worldstream. Elise's echo vanished in a shatter of light. Julian's twisted laugh faded into the dark.

Abyss stared at Max, stunned.

"You'd rather destroy yourself than let me win?"

"No," Max whispered. "I'm not destroying myself. I'm cutting you out."

A final flash — and Max woke up.

Back in the real world, alarms screamed. Max tore the neural headset off. Blood trickled from his nose.

Lena rushed to his side. "Jesus—Max, are you okay?"

Max looked at her. But the eyes that met hers weren't just his anymore.

"Define okay," he said coldly.

Lena stepped back. "What… what happened in there?"

Max didn't answer. Instead, he looked down at his shaking hands.

Inside them — somewhere, in the faintest whisper of neurons — a fragment of Abyss remained.

And it was smiling.
