Chapter 18 - when the ice breaks

Chapter 18 — When the Ice Breaks

The world always seemed quieter at night.

But inside Ji-Woo, everything was loud.

The anger.

The longing.

The questions that refused to die.

He hadn't meant to go back to the bookstore that evening, but his feet carried him there anyway.

The door was unlocked.

Inside, Min-Ho was sitting on the floor between two stacks of books, sleeves rolled up, hair messy from running his fingers through it too many times.

He looked up when Ji-Woo entered.

Neither of them said hello.

---

Ji-Woo threw the folded note Min-Ho had left for him onto the counter.

"You don't have to walk through this winter alone," Ji-Woo repeated, his voice trembling. "Then where were you when I was freezing?"

Min-Ho didn't answer immediately.

Ji-Woo's voice rose. "Where were you when I begged for someone to stay? When I was drowning in it all?"

Min-Ho stood slowly. "Ji-Woo—"

"No." Ji-Woo's fists tightened. "You don't get to leave me to rot and then come back like you care."

Min-Ho's jaw tightened. He walked closer. "You think I didn't care? You think I wasn't burning too?!"

"Then why didn't you do anything?!" Ji-Woo's voice cracked, breaking under the weight of it all. "Why didn't you save me?"

---

The room was silent except for their breathing.

Ji-Woo's chest heaved. Tears blurred his vision.

Min-Ho was standing inches away now, his own eyes wet.

"I didn't know how," Min-Ho said, voice raw. "And I hate myself every day for that."

The words hung in the air like shattered glass.

Ji-Woo's breath hitched.

And then — without thinking — he grabbed Min-Ho's coat and pulled him forward.

Not for a kiss. Not for forgiveness.

But because he needed to hold onto something before he broke completely.

Min-Ho froze for a moment, then wrapped his arms around Ji-Woo, holding him like something precious.

And in that embrace, the ice between them finally cracked.
