Chapter 41 - A New Class, A Familiar Storm

The headmaster's office, usually a sanctuary of hushed formality, felt unusually vibrant this morning. "Welcome back, Miss Lux. You seem a lot better. That's good," the headmaster intoned, his voice as calm and unruffled as a still lake, despite the faint scent of ozone that still clung to Lux's coat. He was a tall, thin man with neatly combed, greying hair, renowned throughout the kingdom as a powerful fire war mage. Yet, for all his destructive potential, there was something profoundly tranquil about him—a serene presence that could easily be mistaken for a master water mage.

"To the reason I called you," he continued, folding his slender hands precisely behind his back, his gaze unwavering. "You've only just started with Class 1B, I know—a mere day, I believe—but we've received several rather… insistent requests from parents, asking specifically for you to oversee their children. Your reputation, it seems, precedes you, even in such a short time. Therefore, we've decided to assign you as the new homeroom teacher for Class 1A. Of course, you'll still teach mathematics to both classes, so the adjustment should be entirely manageable for someone of your… capabilities."

Lux merely nodded, her face a mask of polite acceptance, though internally a familiar weariness settled. More responsibilities. More complications. The headmaster's words were a thinly veiled command, and in this era, one did not easily refuse those with power, especially when disguised as a simple academic appointment.

Now, she stood before the imposing, oak-paneled door of Class 1A, a hand resting lightly on the cool brass handle, steeling herself. A slow, deliberate breath in, drawing in the scent of polished wood and dust. A breath out, releasing a fraction of the tension that had tightened her shoulders. Then, with a practiced grace, she pushed the door inward and stepped inside.

The room seemed to hold more students than she remembered from her fleeting initial glance—or perhaps, she mused, she had simply never truly bothered to count them before, reducing them to an indistinct mass. Her eyes swept across the classroom with a new sense of presence, a more focused, almost predatory, assessment.

Her gaze landed first on Xenia, nestled comfortably at the back of the room, a porcelain doll draped in school uniform. The girl was unbothered, cool, and utterly unreadable, her bone-white hair a luminous halo against the dark wood of her desk. A slight, almost imperceptible smile tugged at Lux's lips. Xenia's body language practically screamed, "Do not approach. I bite. And my father is terrifying." A kindred spirit, perhaps.

Near the center, almost perfectly positioned to observe everything without being overtly watched, sat the Second Prince of the Empire, quiet and observant as ever. His sharp, intelligent green eyes flicked from classmate to classmate, taking in every subtle shift, every nervous glance. Watching. Calculating. A miniature politician already honing his craft.

Two elves caught her attention next, their ethereal presence a shimmering contrast to the mundane classroom. One fair-skinned, radiating an almost visible light, her golden hair a cascade of sunlight. The other dusky-skinned, with hair like spun moonlight, a deeper, more subtle beauty. Light and dark, sitting in quiet harmony. They kept entirely to themselves, both hailing from the distant Elven Empire in the far west. Curious, Lux mused. Elves rarely study this far from home, especially not in human academies. Their presence spoke of deeper connections, perhaps even political ones, she knew, thinking of the Beastkin Confederation's delicate balance.

Then her gaze, sharp and piercing, locked on a girl with the unmistakable poise of deep aristocracy—noble grace etched into her like a very birthmark. Her skin was unnaturally pale, almost translucent, and her eyes… crimson. A vampire? Lux thought, a spark of genuine interest igniting in her ancient soul. How interesting indeed. A rare specimen, bold enough to walk among humans in broad daylight, or perhaps, simply too powerful to care.

She finally stepped to the front of the room, drawing all eyes, and cleared her throat, a soft, deliberate sound that cut through the low murmur of the classroom.

"Good morning, Class," she said, her voice level, carrying just enough authority to command attention without being overtly harsh. "My name is Esh Lux. Due to some recent, shall we say, administrative adjustments, I'll be your new homeroom teacher as well as your mathematics instructor."

She gave them a moment for that to sink in, watching the subtle shifts of surprise, curiosity, and faint disdain ripple through the noble class. As she glanced over the class roster, her eyes paused—then twitched slightly, a tell-tale flicker of annoyance.

There, near the front row, a small, fluffy bundle of enthusiasm sat radiating pure joy. It was the bear beastkin girl, Britney, the very one Lux and Delta had rescued just last night. She was absolutely beaming up at Lux, her blue eyes wide and full of stars, her bear ears twitching with unadulterated delight.

You have to be joking… Lux thought, suppressing a weary sigh that threatened to escape. This isn't just manageable; it's a direct consequence. And now I have to teach the child I just saved from kidnappers.

Trying to avoid locking eyes with the bundle of unfiltered enthusiasm, Lux scanned further across the room—her gaze landing on a boy with lovely black hair and kind, earnest brown eyes. He wasn't watching her, however. He was watching Xenia, a knot of worry etched subtly into his young expression, a quiet concern that spoke volumes.

Lux cleared her throat again, the sound a little louder this time, and gestured to a dwarven girl with neatly braided, light brown hair seated near the edge of the room, her sturdy build and serious expression a stark contrast to the ethereal elves and haughty prince.

"Let's begin introductions, shall we?" she announced, her voice regaining its professional cadence. "You there—yes, you. Please, tell us your name."
