Chapter 20: The Dungeon's New Ecosystem and the Pervert's Grand Vision
Alaric sighed. This is going to be a long, long dungeon optimization. And a very, very public one, if this slime has anything to say about it. And a very, very well-lit, mana-rich one, too. He had a feeling his 'D-Rank' life was about to get even more complicated. But at least he'd be rich. And well-equipped. And maybe, just maybe, he could find a way to refine that slime into something less... telepathic.
He shot a death glare at the transparent slime on his shoulder, which merely jiggled, then let out another tiny, perfectly pitched, defiant giggle. "Mana-infused fabrics! For optimal personal power!" it squeaked, perfectly mimicking Alaric's earlier thought. It's enjoying this. It's actively mocking me. I created a sentient, SSS-tier troll that lives on my shoulder and broadcasts my inner pervert.
Below, Lyra, still under the lingering influence of the 'Droplet of Absolute Persuasion', continued her clumsy, joyful dance through the 'C-Rank Agility Gauntlet', occasionally shouting, "For optimal flexibility!" Finn, meanwhile, was still flailing, trying to avoid the swinging blades and muttering apologies to the moving platforms. "So sorry, Mr. Blade! My apologies, Sir Floor!"
"Excellent! Keep up the optimal performance, you two!" Alaric shouted back, trying to sound encouraging while internally plotting the slime's demise (or at least, its strategic relocation to a very distant, very boring dimension where it could only hum elevator music). This is going to take a while. I need to find something else to optimize while they're... training. And maybe find a way to silence this transparent menace.
He pulled out the 'Lens of Universal Perception'. Okay, no more pervy research for now. Gotta focus on actual dungeon optimization. Tactical information only. No, really. Just tactical. He held the lens up, scanning the B-Rank Beast Lair. The 'Crystal of Pure Radiance' he'd created from the bioluminescent fungus pulsed, casting a soft, warm light that slowly began to spread through the cavern, pushing back the shadows. The air, once heavy with musk, now felt surprisingly fresh.
System Notification: Dungeon Area: [B-Rank Beast Lair]. Condition: Partially Optimized, Contains Aggressive Fauna (Bound), Suboptimal Resource Extraction Points.
"Partially optimized, huh? We'll fix that," Alaric muttered, his eyes narrowing. He began to systematically move through the cavern, touching every rough patch of wall, every uneven section of floor, every damp crevice. His 'Basic Material Refinement' skill hummed, transforming the raw, unrefined stone into smooth, polished surfaces that gleamed with an inner light. The cavern slowly became less of a crude cave and more of an elegant, naturally lit chamber.
System Notification: [Basic Material Refinement] activated. Material: Rough Cavern Wall (B-Rank Stone). Result: Perfected 'Wall of Ethereal Glow' (SSS-Tier Artifact). Condition: Indestructible, Self-Illuminating, Emits Aura of 'Calming Serenity'.
"Calming Serenity? Nice," Alaric hummed. "Maybe this will make the remaining beasts less aggressive. Or make them want to meditate too." He glanced at the still-purring Corrupted Shadow Beast by the 'Pool of Pure Mana'. It seems quite serene. Perhaps I can refine its 'corrupted' status into 'optimally relaxed'.
As he worked, Lyra and Finn eventually stumbled out of the 'C-Rank Agility Gauntlet', both looking exhausted. Lyra was still smiling blissfully, though her movements were less fluid. "Master Alaric! That was... exhilarating! My flexibility has been optimally enhanced!" She then promptly stumbled and nearly face-planted.
Finn, however, looked like he'd seen a ghost. "Sir! The walls! They're... they're glowing! And the air! It smells... clean! I apologize for noticing, sir!"
"Just optimal environmental conditioning, you two," Alaric deadpanned. "Now, Lyra, your persuasion buff is probably wearing off. Go rest by the 'Pool of Pure Mana'. It has a 'Serene Power' aura. Should help with your 'optimal relaxation'. And Finn, you're with me. We're going to optimize the resource extraction points."
Lyra, still slightly wobbly, obediently made her way to the mana pool. As she sat down, the pool's 'Serene Power' aura washed over her. Her blissful smile deepened, and she slowly, gracefully, slumped into a meditative pose, a faint, contented sigh escaping her lips.
Finn stared. "She's... meditating, sir? Like the shadow beast?"
"Optimal relaxation," Alaric confirmed. "Now, come on. We need to find some D-Rank materials. The B-Rank Beast Lair is bound to have some interesting stuff."
He led Finn deeper into the newly illuminated cavern. The 'Crystal of Pure Radiance' he'd created earlier now served as a beacon, pushing back any lingering shadows. They soon came across a section of the wall where strange, metallic veins snaked through the stone.
System Notification: Material Detected: [Unrefined Mana Ore Vein (C-Rank Material)]. Condition: Impure, Suboptimal Mana Concentration, Difficult to Extract.
"Unrefined Mana Ore? Difficult to Extract? Sounds like a job for a D-Rank refiner," Alaric hummed. "Finn, your 'Basic Prospecting' skill might actually be useful here. Find me the weakest points in this vein."
Finn, still nervous but eager to please, hesitantly approached the wall. He activated his 'Basic Prospecting' skill, and his eyes glazed over slightly as he focused. "Uh... this spot, sir! It feels... squishier! I apologize for the technical term, sir!"
Alaric grinned. "Squishier? Perfect. That means suboptimal structural integrity. Good job, Finn. Now, step back."
He placed his hand on the 'squishier' section of the mana ore vein, focusing his skill. The metallic veins shimmered, the impurities flowing out like liquid shadow, condensing into tiny, inert pebbles that fell to the floor. The ore itself transformed, becoming impossibly pure, radiating a brilliant, pulsating blue light, almost identical to the Dungeon Core itself.
System Notification: [Basic Material Refinement] activated. Material: Unrefined Mana Ore Vein (C-Rank). Result: Perfected 'Vein of Infinite Mana Crystals' (SSS-Tier Artifact). Condition: Provides Infinite Mana Crystals (Passive), Self-Replenishing, Emits Aura of 'Boundless Energy'.
Alaric stared. "Infinite Mana Crystals? Self-Replenishing? 'Boundless Energy'?" He burst out laughing. "Holy crap. I just turned a C-Rank ore vein into a passive income generator for mana crystals! This is even better than the gold coin! This is like having a mana factory! I can equip every adventurer in Silverhaven with infinite mana! Or, you know, just hoard it all for myself. For optimal personal power. And optimal research into... mana-infused fabrics."
The transparent slime on his shoulder jiggled wildly, then in a tiny, perfectly pitched voice that sounded eerily like Alaric's own, it squeaked: "Mana-infused fabrics! For optimal personal power!" It then giggled, a knowing, triumphant sound.
Alaric froze, his face going pale. "You! You little... you're still doing that?! Even after I threatened you with Agnes's desk?!" He grabbed the slime, holding it up to the newly refined mana vein. "I'm warning you! One more thought-mimicry, and I'm refining you into a perfectly clear, perfectly silent paperweight that only hums soothing lullabies and has a 'Permanent Mute' condition! And I'll make you wear a tiny badger pelt toupee!"
The slime jiggled, then let out a tiny, perfectly pitched, defiant giggle.
Finn, meanwhile, was staring at the glowing mana vein with wide eyes. "Sir! It's... it's beautiful! And it's making my pickaxe feel... lighter! I apologize for the sudden feeling of efficiency, sir!"
And maybe, just maybe, he could find a way to refine that slime into something less... telepathic.
He began to systematically refine the entire B-Rank Beast Lair. Walls became 'Walls of Ethereal Glow', the floor transformed into 'Polished Obsidian Pathways' that hummed with a faint energy. Even the scattered bones and discarded monster parts were refined, turning into 'Nutrient-Rich Soil' that glowed faintly, ready to sprout whatever flora Alaric desired. The cavern was no longer a beast lair; it was a vast, glowing, perfectly organized ecosystem.
System Notification: Dungeon Area: [B-Rank Beast Lair] has been fully optimized. Condition: Perfected Ecosystem, Infinite Mana Crystal Production, Optimal Habitat for Purified Fauna.
"Perfected Ecosystem, huh? Nice," Alaric hummed, surveying his work. He imagined adventurers walking into this. They'd expect a terrifying beast lair, and instead, they'd find a glowing, serene paradise. The ultimate troll. And the ultimate training ground. I can spawn purified versions of aggressive beasts now. Ones that want to meditate. Or sing opera.
He walked over to the now-meditating Lyra. She was deeply relaxed, a faint, blissful smile on her face. The Corrupted Shadow Beast, still purring, was curled up beside her like a giant, shadowy housecat.
"Lyra," Alaric said softly. "Time to wake up. We've got more optimizing to do."
Lyra stirred, slowly opening her eyes. She blinked, then looked around the glowing cavern. Her eyes widened. "Master Alaric! What happened? It's so... beautiful! And I feel so... refreshed!" She then looked at the Shadow Beast beside her. "And this... this giant fluffy kitten! Can I keep him?"
Alaric blinked. "Fluffy kitten? He's a Corrupted Shadow Beast."
"No, he's not!" Lyra insisted, hugging the purring beast. "He's just a big, misunderstood kitty! Look at his little purrs!"
Alaric sighed. The 'Emotional Clarity' aura from the 'Crystal of Unburdened Truths' combined with the 'Serene Power' of the mana pool. It's making her see the world through rose-tinted glasses. Or rather, through 'optimally flexible' glasses.
"Alright, Lyra," Alaric said, trying to regain control. "He's... a temporary pet. For optimal emotional support. Now, Finn, how's your prospecting going?"
Finn, who had been diligently tapping the newly refined mana vein with his pickaxe, looked up, his eyes wide. "Sir! It's amazing! Every time I hit it, a perfect mana crystal pops out! And my pickaxe feels so... efficient! I apologize for my previous inefficiency, sir!" He held up a handful of gleaming, perfectly formed mana crystals.
"Excellent, Finn! Keep up the optimal extraction!" Alaric grinned. This is perfect. A passive mana crystal farm. I'm going to be swimming in mana. And gold. And potentially, very embarrassing confessions.
He then looked at the transparent slime on his shoulder. "Alright, you. New task. I need you to scout the next area. The A-Rank Demon Lair. I need optimal reconnaissance. And no mimicking my thoughts about 'optimal demon anatomy'. Got it?"
The slime jiggled. Then, in a tiny, perfectly pitched voice that sounded eerily like Alaric's own, it squeaked: "Optimal demon anatomy! For research!" It then giggled, a knowing, triumphant sound.
Alaric groaned. I am never going to win against this thing. It's my own personal, SSS-tier, pervert-broadcasting nemesis.
He sighed, running a hand over his face. Demon Lair, huh? This is going to be fun. And probably very, very public. But at least I'll be well-equipped. And well-supplied. And maybe, just maybe, I can find a way to refine a demon into something less... demonic. Like a perfectly obedient, optimally flexible, demon maid
