As he observed the words "Iron Wall," "Tobirama's Successor," and "Hokage Candidate," a complex glint crossed his gaze. He admired Sasuke, but also felt an inexplicable fear. His rise had been swift and spectacular.
"Hiruzen, this boy is showing his brilliance. He must be suppressed," Homura said, adjusting his glasses. "Rumors that he is Tobirama's successor are rampant. We are the true successors! This is a provocation to our authority!"
Koharu frowned. "But his contribution is real. There's no point in hiding his achievements."
"Merits are merits, and faults are faults," Hiruzen said in a grave voice. "Merits must be rewarded, but the rumors must be clarified. Also, since his troops are so powerful, let them attack the heart of the Land of Wind and see if they can capture the Daimyō and sign an armistice agreement."
"Yes, that's it!", Homura clapped his hands, and then added: "Hiruzen, there are rumors that Sasuke's strength has improved so quickly because he secretly performed human experiments. I believe this rumor is not unfounded. We should examine his body."
"Alright, Koharu, I'll leave the physical examination to you," Hiruzen said, making the final decision.
Meanwhile, at the Root's underground base, "As expected of a capable man I promoted, Sasuke fought well!", Danzō said, satisfied.
"Danzō, aren't you afraid he'll compete with you for the position of the next Hokage?", Orochimaru asked, standing before a huge cultivation tank full of Hashirama's cells.
Danzō's face darkened. "Orochimaru, you worry too much. Sasuke is a capable general whom I promoted. I don't know him enough. How could he rebel against me? When I take the throne, he will be the best candidate to assist the Hokage."
"Are you so sure he will support you instead of becoming Hokage himself?", Orochimaru asked with a playful smile. As he knew, Sasuke was a master of political maneuvers.
"Hmph! Orochimaru, you underestimate me!", Danzō's gaze reflected determination. "If Sasuke can defeat me, I will make him Hokage. He is a thousand times better than the weak Hiruzen. As for you, the Three Ninjas, apart from you, Jiraiya and Tsunade are practically of the same race, weak and powerless."
He solemnly promised: "Orochimaru, you can focus on your research. The power of the Wood Style will be the cornerstone of Konoha's future. When I become the Fourth Hokage, you will be the leader of the ANBU. As for Sasuke, he should be a good candidate for the Fifth."
