Chapter 278: Rasa's Selfishness
"What's wrong, Maki?"
Rasa carefully caught the changes in Maki, and the corners of his lips curved slightly, but his face reflected concern.
Maki raised his head and held Rasa's gaze, his voice slightly trembling with contained anger. "Lord Rasa, the White-Haired Demon is the murderer who used deceit to kill my father on the front of the Land of the River a year ago. He even sold his body to the exchange house. If it weren't for your kindness, sir, who helped me rescue him, I don't know where he would be now on a laboratory table!" Maki's voice was full of pain and a murderous intent he could barely hide. The hatred for having killed his father was irreconcilable!
"Oh? It was him," Rasa feigned surprise, but in reality, he had known about Maki's experience for a long time. It was one of the reasons why he decided to keep him by his side.
"Maki, the White-Haired Demon is very powerful. Revenge will not be easy. Since he was able to kill Elder Chiyo's closest relatives, his strength must be formidable!", Rasa said in a tempting tone. "Even Elder Chiyo will probably be in danger if she goes there. He and White Fang are the nemesis of puppeteers. The fate of Ebizō and Arashi is a lesson for us."
"Lord Rasa, what should I do? Is there no way to get revenge?", Maki asked, anxious.
"Maki, I'm still here," Rasa said with complacency. "And isn't my Magnet Style also his nemesis?! Against him, the Demon's puppets, no matter how powerful they are, are nothing but scrap metal. As for White Fang, I will fly through the air and perform the Golden Sand Burial. A simple White Fang will just wait to die!"
"Yes!", upon hearing Rasa's bold words, Maki nodded repeatedly, his eyes filled with admiration.
"Maki, I have remembered your hatred," Rasa lowered his voice. "The more violent the White-Haired Demons are now, the greater the merit if we face them in the future. Then, without a doubt, I will act myself and defeat them. You will have the opportunity to avenge your father. Now you just need to remember this hatred and wait."
Maki immediately knelt down. "Yes! Lord Rasa, I understand. I am willing to die for you, just to kill the enemy with my own hands!"
"Very good," Rasa nodded with satisfaction. "Get up. To resist foreign aggression, we must first stabilize the country. Go and notify the officials to meet immediately."
"Yes, sir!", Maki got up and quickly left.
As Rasa watched him retreat, his lips curled. A young assistant full of hatred, the imminent position of Kazekage, and two steps destined for the top: the whole plan had never been so wonderful, almost as captivating as the news of Arashi's death.
The order for the command transfer was quickly transmitted. Now that Arashi had died, Rasa, as the most powerful heir, was in high demand. The transition at the front was remarkably smooth.
The deputy intelligence director, seeing that Rasa was a man of deep intrigues, realized that remaining on the front was like a sheep entering a tiger's mouth. "Lord Rasa," he said, lowering his posture, "Elder Chiyo is returning to the country to hunt the White-Haired Demon and needs intelligence resources. I beg you to allow me to return with her to provide support."
Upon hearing this, Rasa's eyes shone. He could not help but smile to himself: a deputy intelligence director, without support, following that vengeful old woman to her death, seemed like a good fate. "What a good idea! Elder Chiyo needs an assistant as capable as you. Go and make sure to protect her and transmit the information in time," he said, deliberately emphasizing the last words.
"Thank you for your help!", the deputy director quickly bowed and withdrew.
Rasa was standing at the door of the tent, silently watching Chiyo, as the elite troops, under her orders, marched toward the heart of the Land of Wind. He remained with his hands behind his back, and the smug smile at the corner of his lips was unmistakable. 'The taste of holding power is so wonderful!'
"Maki!", he returned to the sand table. "Prepare the pen and ink, I want to write a report to the Third Kazekage!"
The letter, although it seemed like a humble apology, was actually heartbreaking. It pointed out that Chiyo had abandoned her post, ignoring the overall situation, and stressed his own responsibility to accept the task in a crisis. Finally, he did not forget to mention the shortage of troops on the front and the need for reinforcements.
In the Kazekage's office, the Third looked at the letter, his face becoming more and more aggrieved. "Idiot! How can Chiyo be so indifferent!"
"Lord Kazekage, calm down," Jōran consoled him. "The old woman was also blinded by hatred. After all, her brother, her son, and her daughter-in-law died at the same time."
"I am also deeply saddened by their death, but this is no reason to abandon the thousands of soldiers on the front line!", the Kazekage replied.
"Lord Kazekage," Jōran continued, "the White-Haired Demon and White Fang have been wreaking havoc in our country. If Elder Chiyo manages to eliminate them, she will not only be able to avenge the fallen heroes, but she will also be able to solve the main problems in the rear. In the long run, this might not be bad!"
