Sir, do you think a war is coming? Jay asked Mike.
Mike frowned, his eyes hard. "Hmm… it will definitely come. We need to be prepared. Recall all our hunting teams scattered across the city. It's time to prepare for war."
Marcus' Return
Coming back to the camp was easy, but the moment I stepped in, I noticed something was wrong. The atmosphere was heavy—intense, almost suffocating. What happened? I thought.
The guards immediately greeted me as they saw the Humvee rolling in. I stepped out and asked one of them, "What's wrong?"
The soldier hesitated, stammering, "Ah, sir…" but before he could continue, Troy arrived, his face clouded with a deep frown.
This must be serious, I realized. Almost everyone around wore the same grim expression.
I got down from the Humvee fully and instructed a soldier to take care of it. Troy walked closer.
"Marcus, let's go to the office. Me and Jessy already set it up for our command."
I narrowed my eyes slightly. Something's definitely off. Troy only called me by name when the matter was heavy enough to anger me.
"Jessy's already waiting inside," he added.
"Alright. Let's go," I said firmly, following him toward the office.
The "office" was nothing more than a big tent, but it was good enough for us. When I entered Troy, Jessy was already inside.
"Welcome back, Marcus," he greeted.
"Hey Jessy, I'm back," I replied.
But then his face darkened, shifting into anger.
"What is it?" I asked, my voice tense.
Troy was the one who spoke up. As the words left his mouth, explaining what happened while I was gone, I felt my rage building inside me.
He said they had discovered a girl—one who was being chased by several men. Our soldiers intervened, and the moment those men saw their uniforms, they ran. When the girl finally felt safe enough to speak, what she told them was beyond horrifying.
I clenched my fists as Troy's words sank in. The girl had been forced to watch her family murdered right in front of her. Then, those bastards… they cooked and ate their bodies, laughing as she screamed.
"Fuck… fuck!" I muttered under my breath, barely controlling the fury boiling inside me.
It hasn't even been a few weeks since this all started, and people have already devolved into this. Watching The Walking Dead, the story always centered around the main cast, the spin-offs, and the dangers they faced. But now, standing in the middle of this world, I realized something much darker—this was far more brutal than any series could ever show. Human nature at its ugliest… evil in its purest form.
Troy continued, his tone heavy. "It seems to be connected to the people we killed in that building."
The moment I heard those words, my mind began racing.
Jessy stepped forward, his voice firm. "Marcus, I know what you're thinking. This isn't your fault. You might be blaming yourself since you killed those people in that building and didn't check all the rooms. But how could you have known something like this was happening?"
He was right. I exhaled slowly. Yeah… he's right.
"Did you check the building?" I asked.
Troy nodded, though his expression tightened. "Yes. When we opened the rooms… there were a lot of them." He hesitated before finishing. Jessy closed his eyes, grim.
Troy finally spoke the truth. "I think they were hunting the people in this city. We found chains… bones. It looked like they were in a hurry when they left."
I let that sink in, my jaw tight. "So that's why they ran when they saw our soldiers' uniforms, right?"
"Probably," Jessy replied quietly.
Then that explains why we can't find a damn survivor — not even one," I said. "So how did the girl escape?"
Troy answered, "When they were about to kill and cook her, she managed to get away. We don't know how — she won't tell us."
"That's strange," I said.
"Are we going to war?" Jessy asked.
"We will," I said, each word sharp. "We will exterminate these pests." My voice came out hot and hard; Troy and Jessy had already expected my reaction.
"I want to meet her," I told Jessy. Troy would be busy with preparations, so Jessy hesitated for a moment, then nodded. "All right. Follow me," he said.
Jessy led me through the temporary camp. We passed soldiers who nodded and murmured greetings as we moved between rows of tents. "She's inside," Jessy said quietly. "No one's been able to get her to talk."
"All right. You can leave," I told him. He nodded and slipped away.
I took a breath and pushed into the tent.
She sat on a blanket in the dim light — a thin girl with tangled blonde hair. I couldn't tell her age at first. Up close, she looked small, hollowed out by what she'd seen.
"Hey," I said softly. "What's your name?"
She only stared at me for a long moment, silent and guarded. I crouched down to be less threatening. "I'm the leader here," I said. "You don't have to be afraid. You're not with them anymore, right?"
Her voice came out small and raw. "Those people…" she asked, eyes wide with fear. "They—"
"No," I interrupted gently. "You're safe. I'll make sure those people suffer."
A hard, bitter laugh escaped her. "You don't understand," she snapped, then crumpled a little. With gritted teeth she spat, "No. You should let me see them suffer. They deserve it. I want revenge."
I studied her. "What's your name? How old are you?"
"Angel Garcia," she said. "I'm ten."
I let that sit for a beat. Ten. Too young for this kind of thing.
"If you can prove you're strong," I said, forcing a small, careful smile, "I'll help you get your revenge."
Her eyes flared. "How do I prove it?" she demanded.
I looked at the girl and began to think maybe I should change my way of thinking. This world is dangerous and kids like her need to protect themselves. I may not always be around. I thought about the orphan kids I already have, then I said, "Well…..
