Ash was not far from where the lightning had hit. Pushing branches aside, he had only walked for about ten minutes when he heard a series of low bird cries up ahead. They were full of anger and fear.
"From the sound, it must be a bird Pokémon. So it should be…"
Before Ash could finish his thought, a huge thunderous roar came from ahead. The loud noise shook the ground a little. It was so strong that Ash had to cover his ears.
"Holy crap… that was loud."
The sudden noise shocked Ash for a moment. He cursed quietly. This was really annoying. Who would not be angry after having their ears hurt like that? Could it not have given a warning before striking? If it had said "cover your ears," he would not be like this… though he probably would not have understood anyway. He did not speak Pokémon.
"Zap! Zpa!"
Another sharp bird cry rang out. Then, another bolt of lightning crashed down from the sky.
Rumble-rumble, "Damn it, looks like this guy has a bad temper."
This lightning strike was even stronger than the last one. It almost knocked Ash to the ground. If it was this strong while hurt, what would it be like at full power?
The thought made Ash shiver. If it really got better, he would be walking right into a trap. As the old saying goes: strike while the iron is hot. Since it is hurt, I will catch it, and then I will have another strong friend.
Ash chuckled softly and kept walking toward the lightning spot. The closer he got, the louder the bird cries and thunder became. When he reached the center, he found a small crater. A large, golden bird was inside, trying hard to get up. The fall had been bad, and its injuries from battle made it unable to stand.
Golden light shone on Ash's face as he looked at the bird. It was almost as tall as a person. A truly amazing creature… A true legendary pokémon… This should be fun…
Ash's mind worked quickly. His hands moved fast as he got his Pokémon ready, planning a surprise attack.
He looked over his Pokémon: Ivysaur, Pidgeot, Raticate, Cubone, Snorlax, Charmander, Miltank, and Kangaskhan. He had more than six Pokémon with him, but none were being sent back to the Professor like in the stories or games. This confused him, but he did not mind. It was a relief not to send them back.
Ash thought about his eight Pokémon. After a moment, a clever plan came to him. He quietly gave orders to his Pokémon, who all nodded.
"Excellent. Let us begin. Go, Ivysaur! Go, Cubone!"
Ash said with a smile.
"Ivysaur!" "Cubone!"
Both Pokémon nodded and ran forward.Zapdos, which had just started to get up, saw the two Pokémon running toward it and looked confused.
"Ivysaur, use Sleep Powder!" Ivysaur right away let out a cloud of sleepy dust. "Cubone, use Bonemerang!" Cubone threw its bone in a wide circle. Trapped in the pit, Zapdos was an easy target for the powder. The Bonemerang was not super effective, but hitting its hurt body still worked.
"Zap! zap!"
Hurt and now feeling sleepy, Zapdos let out a sharp cry. She never thought that after being knocked from the sky by a dark pokémon, she would now be attacked by these small Pokémon. Her already injured body hurt with new pain, making her even angrier. Right away, Zapdos roared again and used Thunder Wave to paralyze the two threats coming near.
"Go now!" Ash shouted from his hiding spot.
"Snorlax, use Crunch!" Snorlax and Kangaskhan charged from different sides, attacking together. Snorlax's fangs glowed with dark energy. Kangaskhan, use Mega Punch! Kangaskhan's fist glowed with a fierce power. Both Pokémon's attacks hit the paralyzed Zapdos at the same time.
"Zappppp…"
Hit in the middle by two heavy Pokémon's full-power attacks, Zapdos felt like its back was breaking. Pain spread through its whole body.
"Now! Keep going!" Ash shouted again.
At that moment, Raticate, Charmander, and Pidgeot ran forward. Raticate used Hyper Fang, dashing in and biting Zapdos's wing hard. Charmander shot a Flamethrower from far away. Pidgeot flew in the air and used a diving Aerial Ace on Zapdos's back. The other Pokémon did not hold back either. Snorlax hit Zapdos's back with a Body Slam. Ivysaur used Razor Leaf from a safe distance. Cubone kept throwing its Bonemerang. Kangaskhan landed a Dizzy Punch on Zapdos's head.
After all these attacks one after another, Zapdos felt like its body had been crushed. Pain spread everywhere, and its mind became fuzzy. The pride of a legendary Pokémon flared inside it. Zapdos let out a thunderous roar, as loud as a thunderclap. Suddenly, dark clouds gathered in the sky, flashing with lightning.
"Oh no… Run!" Ash shouted when he saw this, but it was too late. A bolt of lightning, as thick as three people linking arms, struck straight down toward Zapdos. Several Pokémon beside it were hit directly. They were all thrown back by the blast.
Snorlax and Kangaskhan were much better off. Their types were not weak to lightning, and their thick bodies let them recover. Raticate and Pidgeot were worse. Raticate was knocked out right away. Pidgeot, being weak to lightning, struggled to stand even with its strong will.
"Pidgeot," Pidgeot muttered, glaring at Zapdos.
"After using that attack, Zapdos looks weaker too." Ash frowned, watching the tired Zapdos lying on the ground.
"One more time!" Ash shouted.
Hearing his command, the Pokémon got back on their feet and charged at Zapdos. Snorlax used Body Slam. Kangaskhan used Dizzy Punch. Ivysaur used Vine Whip. Cubone used Bulldoze.
Another wave of attacks hit Zapdos.
"Zzzz…" Zapdos let out another angry cry and shot another lightning bolt. This time, it was not aimed at itself but at Ivysaur and Cubone. The two Pokémon were sent flying. Even though they could resist Electric-type moves a little, Zapdos's lightning was too much for them, and they got slightly hurt.
Whoosh! A sudden, fierce determination burned in Pidgeot's eyes. With a powerful cry, it flapped its wings with all its strength, creating a strong Whirlwind that blasted Zapdos. This broke its focus and slammed it back against the crater wall.
"What is this…" Ash stared, completely shocked by Pidgeot's sudden burst of power and will.
"Pidgeot!"
Pidgeot's look was sharper than ever. Its body shook with effort, but it refused to give up. Its sharp eyes locked onto Zapdos, who looked back, now clearly annoyed by this stubborn bird.
"Good! Keep attacking. Pidgeot, use Air Slash!" Ash shouted excitedly, jumping to his feet.
"Pidgeot!"
Pidgeot rose a little and flapped its wings. A blade of condensed air flew toward Zapdos.
"Zzzz! " Zapdos winced in pain and glared angrily at Pidgeot before shooting another Thunderbolt. Pidgeot dodged it, but Zapdos felt her strength leaving. She was about to faint, but the pride of a Legendary Pokémon would not let her fall. She gritted her teeth and held on.
"Hmph, that should do it." Seeing Zapdos swaying, Ash chuckled softly and gave the final attack command to his Pokémon.
The Pokémon immediately attacked together, each using their best moves on the exhausted Zapdos. As the powerful hits landed on its body, Zapdos finally felt darkness take over and fell unconscious…
"Perfect."
Seeing Zapdos fall, Ash jumped up in victory. He grabbed an empty Poké Ball and threw it at the fallen Pokémon.
A flash of red light. Ding! ding! ding! BOOM!
Even while unconscious, Zapdos was hard to catch. Not giving up, Ash threw several more Poké Balls. It took seven or eight tries before the unconscious Zapdos was finally caught inside. Holding the Poké Ball with Zapdos, he looked at his backpack.
"Looks like I need to get more Poké Balls again. I used them all at once."
Ash chuckled wryly. Of course, his special Poké Balls were still there, just not used. He had a feeling they would all be useful later.
