A voice reached me before my eyes did, and it sounded like Samantha, which meant I must have been either dead, dreaming, or finally paying for every stupid thing I had ever done.
My lids felt heavy when I forced them open, and the room came into focus in pieces, with pale light, white sheets, Samantha’s face, and a whole lot of panic sitting behind her eyes.
My chest went tight in a way that had nothing to do with the wound under the bandages.
“Am I in heaven?” I let the corner of my mouth tilt because I could already guess the answer. “Nah. With what I’ve done, definitely hell.”
Samantha’s face changed in an instant, and then she briefly locked lips with me.
For half a second, all the ache in my body forgot its job.
Then she pulled back and hit my chest with both hands, and I swear the woman looked ready to set the bed on fire with her eyes.
“What exactly were you thinking?” she burst out. “I almost became a widow.”
