Chapter 119 - A little bit Selfish

Death isn't exactly the worst outcome here—but it's definitely not my Plan A, neither is it my Plan B or C.

I step back carefully, my boots crunching softly against the dirt. My spine brushes against the set of small trees, planted together and trimmed to form a boundary. Its thick branches claw at my back, its thorns pricking through my clothes. The fucking monster lifts its blood-stained muzzle, sniffing the air.

I'm too busy quietly losing my mind to notice the footsteps right away. But the deep, bone-rattling roar that follows? That grabs my fucking full attention.

I'm already experienced enough to know who I saw was never Annika. And I pity Klaus for thinking he could manipulate me with such an illusion.

Everyone's supposed to be racing for the center of the maze to win, but if Josie gets the chance to leave me behind and sacrifice a few points to get ahead, she'll take it. No doubt.
