Chapter 1 - Fragmented Execution

Chapter 1 — Fragmented Execution

Nyxus knew he hated Zerith.

He could no longer remember why.

That was the first thing Content Deleted had taken from him.

The second was a moon.

It hung above the fractured planet where they fought—gray, broken and close enough that its craters were visible against the stars.

Zerith raised one finger.

A single red zero drifted from its tip.

It crossed the void without speed.

One moment it was beside Zerith.

The next, it touched the moon.

There was no explosion.

No flash.

No debris.

The moon simply—

wasn't.

Nyxus stared at the empty sky.

Something had been there.

He knew that because he had been looking at it.

Then the planet's tides corrected themselves.

Its orbit shifted.

Fragments formerly suspended beneath the moon's gravity changed direction. Ancient impact records vanished from the planet's surface. Even the stars behind the absence seemed to draw closer together, concealing the place where something had once interrupted them.

Nyxus frowned.

What had he been looking at?

Across the broken curvature of the planet, Zerith smiled.

"You felt it."

Nyxus looked toward him.

"Felt what?"

Zerith's smile widened.

Nyxus went still.

That answer had amused him.

Which meant Nyxus had just proven something.

He had already forgotten what.

The void surrounding them was stitched with stars and coming apart at the seams. Beneath Nyxus's feet, the dying planet had split so deeply that molten light showed through its fractures. Pieces of atmosphere streamed away in pale-blue ribbons.

Nyxus stood upon one of the remaining sections.

An obsidian hoodie hung loosely from his body, its edges traced by thin lines of neon purple. A glowing 8 pulsed once across his chest. White hair drifted around his face despite the absence of wind.

Opposite him stood Zerith.

Content Deleted.

His skin was unnaturally pale. Veins of red wireframe corruption spread across approximately one-third of his body, cutting through flesh in patterns too deliberate to be wounds. Two crimson horns curved from his head, emitting a frequency Nyxus could feel behind his eyes.

Zerith never blinked.

Nyxus found that pretentious.

He rolled one shoulder.

"You're deleting scenery now?"

"I am correcting unnecessary information."

"That sounds like deleting scenery with extra steps."

"You remain remarkably calm."

Nyxus looked around at the place where—

Something had disappeared.

Probably.

"Mostly confused."

Zerith extended one hand.

Red binary gathered around his fingers.

Nyxus's expression sharpened.

There.

That, he understood.

The digits launched.

Nyxus moved.

Purple light fractured beneath his feet as he stepped through distance the planet no longer possessed. A stream of red ones passed through the position he had occupied.

The ground vanished.

Not shattered.

Vanished.

Molten stone beneath it surged upward, then abruptly changed course as the planet corrected for a wound it no longer remembered receiving.

Nyxus appeared above Zerith.

Silver code spiraled around his fist.

He struck.

Zerith raised his forearm.

The impact folded the planet.

A fracture raced from one horizon to the other. Continents shifted. The remaining atmosphere scattered into luminous rings.

Zerith slid backward.

Nyxus followed.

His body broke into violet afterimages, each one completing a different fragment of movement. He struck Zerith's ribs, turned through the recoil and drove an elbow across his jaw.

Zerith left the ground.

Nyxus appeared above him and kicked downward.

The impact sent Zerith through the planet's outer crust.

Stone folded over him.

For half a second, everything stopped.

Nyxus floated above the crater.

Purple code ran from his sleeves in smooth geometric lines. They spread across the damaged world, stabilizing its remaining structure before the planet could finish collapsing.

He stared into the crater.

Nothing moved.

Nyxus lowered his hands.

"That seemed easier than it should've—"

The crater disappeared.

Nyxus blinked.

Not repaired.

It had never been made.

The planet's surface stood unbroken beneath him.

Zerith stood there too.

The section of his jaw Nyxus had fractured was intact.

No regeneration.

No reversal.

The injury had simply lost the event that caused it.

Zerith looked up.

"You still think we are fighting."

Nyxus glanced at his fist.

"I did hit you."

"Did you?"

Nyxus opened his mouth.

Then stopped.

He remembered swinging.

He remembered impact.

He remembered—

Nothing.

His hand slowly closed.

Zerith rose from the planet.

The red corruption across his body began to move.

Until then, it had possessed a boundary.

Thirty percent of him.

No farther.

That boundary disappeared.

Wireframe veins crossed his chest. Spread over his throat. Climbed his face. Red code entered his eyes until even their original color became information no longer worth preserving.

His horns fractured into recursive shapes.

The space around him returned an error.

LIMITER: UNRESOLVED

UPPER BOUNDARY: NOT FOUND

Nyxus watched the final line appear.

"Oh."

Zerith spread both hands.

"Limitless Code."

Nyxus tilted his head.

"Subtle."

"Accurate."

The first wave emerged.

Red ones and zeroes poured from Zerith's body like burning ash. They did not illuminate the darkness. Light that touched them disappeared before it could be reflected.

Nyxus moved.

A zero passed beside his face.

The edge of his hood vanished.

A second digit touched one of his violet afterimages.

The afterimage disappeared.

So did the movement that had created it.

Nyxus stumbled.

His body had completed a step whose beginning no longer existed.

He corrected immediately, twisting beneath another stream of red code. Silver binary formed around his forearms and struck the incoming digits.

The collision produced nothing.

No shockwave.

No scattered energy.

Every strand of silver code that touched the red simply ceased being part of the exchange.

Nyxus stared.

These were not projectiles.

They were instructions.

A red one touched a distant star.

The star vanished.

Darkness occupied its position for perhaps half a second.

Then neighboring constellations changed.

Civilizations beneath them received different skies. Navigation systems corrected charts they had never recorded incorrectly. Worlds that had evolved beneath that star acquired new histories explaining how life had survived without it.

Reality did not mourn the loss.

Reality denied that a loss had occurred.

Nyxus understood.

And for the first time since the battle began, he stopped pretending not to be afraid.

Zerith saw it.

"Death leaves evidence," he said.

The red digits multiplied around him.

"A body. A memory. A consequence."

They fragmented.

Each number became smaller copies of itself.

Then those copies divided again.

Recursive shards spread into spaces conventional matter could not occupy—the gaps between particles, the intervals between thoughts, the microscopic distance separating an event from its consequence.

"Deletion leaves nothing."

Nyxus searched for an escape route.

There were millions.

The red code occupied all of them.

Zerith continued.

"No body."

The planet beneath Nyxus began disappearing.

"No memory."

A distant dimension cracked into wireframe.

"No grief."

The wireframe folded inward.

"No evidence that anything was ever taken."

The dimension vanished.

Nyxus could no longer remember noticing it.

Zerith looked directly at him.

"When I finish, nobody will forget you."

The red storm closed.

"They will never have known you."

Nyxus stared at the approaching deletion.

Then at Zerith.

"That sounded rehearsed."

Zerith's expression did not change.

"I have said it before."

That was considerably less funny.

Nyxus brought both hands together.

Every remaining line of violet and silver code collapsed around him. The glowing 8 across his chest brightened until its shape burned against the void.

He could not overpower the storm.

He could not block it.

So he searched for the flaw inside it.

Every command required structure.

Every function required logic.

Every execution required—

Something.

Nyxus felt the answer.

Not clearly.

A pressure beneath the code.

A question he did not yet possess the language to ask.

Why was Zerith's deletion allowed to touch him?

White light flashed behind Nyxus's eyes.

For an instant, words almost appeared.

REQUEST—

Then the storm reached him.

Nyxus moved.

Millions of red fragments passed through the place where he had been.

All except one.

It was too small to see.

Too small to meaningfully exist.

The shard brushed his side.

Nothing hurt.

Pain required something to have happened.

Nyxus looked down.

Part of his hoodie was gone.

Not torn.

Not burned.

Gone.

The purple outline around the missing section flickered as though uncertain where it should continue.

Then the erasure spread.

Nyxus reached for the wound.

His fingers passed over skin that reality had already begun refusing to identify as his.

The glowing 8 across his chest dimmed.

One of its lines disappeared.

Nyxus tried to restore it.

He could not remember what the complete symbol had looked like.

"No."

The word came out weaker than intended.

His outline flickered.

Information peeled away from him in silent layers.

Location.

Mass.

History.

Context.

Across the planet, the damage Nyxus had caused began disappearing.

Cracks closed because nothing had created them.

Fragments returned to locations from which they had never been displaced.

The path of his battle corrected itself, removing every piece of evidence that a second combatant had opposed Zerith.

Nyxus looked toward him.

Zerith was staring back.

But something had changed in his red eyes.

Recognition was leaving.

Nyxus tried to speak.

"My name is—"

The answer vanished before it reached his mouth.

His name.

He had possessed one.

Someone had shortened it once.

Nyx—

The rest was gone.

The story was losing him.

Not killing him.

Correcting itself into a version in which he had never arrived.

The figure in the damaged hoodie staggered.

The planet beneath his feet stopped acknowledging his weight.

He began to fall through it.

Zerith watched with decreasing interest.

Soon there would be nobody left to defeat.

Soon there would never have been a battle.

The last violet line around the figure's body flickered.

Then something selected the sky.

Zerith looked up.

So did the person he was forgetting.

A thin golden line had appeared against the void.

It was not light.

It did not possess energy.

It left no measurable pressure against space.

The line blinked.

Once.

Twice.

Then moved.

It dragged itself across the rendered heavens with the hesitant precision of a cursor searching for the correct position in a document.

Zerith's expression changed.

"What is that?"

The cursor stopped.

A golden frame appeared around the erasing figure.

The universe trembled.

Not from force.

From objection.

The frame tightened.

Then words appeared across the sky.

They were not written in Binary.

They were not composed of Glitched Energy.

Zerith did not recognize the authority issuing them.

SYSTEM OVERRIDE

PAUSE_PLOT: TRUE

Everything continued moving.

The planet rotated.

Its atmosphere escaped.

Red digits advanced through the void.

Zerith's hand began to close.

But nothing reached its next meaningful state.

The planet rotated without arriving anywhere new.

The atmosphere fled without becoming farther away.

Zerith's fingers moved without completing the gesture.

Deletion remained inside the figure's body without erasing another fragment.

Time had not stopped.

Time was simply no longer permitted to produce developments.

Cause remained.

Consequence waited.

The plot had been paused.

Zerith stared at the golden cursor.

"Who authorized—"

A vertical line blinked beside him.

His sentence could not finish.

The cursor moved again.

It selected a section of empty space beside the fading figure.

Then it pulled.

The selected space opened.

Not like a portal.

Portals joined two locations.

This opening did not acknowledge that either side possessed a location at all.

No Spatial Energy formed its edge.

No Temporal sequence preceded its arrival.

No Causal event explained why it should be there.

It shimmered in undefined logic—something older than the system currently attempting to understand it.

Something outside the story had opened a door.

The fading figure felt it take hold of what little context remained attached to him.

He was pulled toward the opening.

Zerith forced his arm to move.

It moved.

The attack could not become an attack.

Red digits reached the portal.

Their deletion returned no valid target.

For the first time, Content Deleted looked uncertain.

The figure passed through.

For one instant, white hair and violet code were visible against the gold.

Then the opening closed.

The cursor disappeared.

The command vanished with it.

The plot resumed.

The dying planet completed its rotation.

Its atmosphere escaped.

Zerith's hand closed around nothing.

Deletion consumed the place where its target had been.

There was no target left to erase.

A final message appeared in the air.

ERASURE EXECUTION: INCOMPLETE

TARGET CONTEXT: UNRESOLVED

STATUS: FRAGMENTED

Zerith stared at the words.

He felt that something had escaped him.

He could no longer remember what.

Far beyond the system's reach, another story opened.

It had no idea what had just fallen into it.
