Chapter 17 - Chapter 17 — The Swordsman in the Dark

A taut, suffocating stillness filled the damp cavern corridor.

Cana's breath was shallow, one hand hovering tightly over her card deck while her eyes remained locked on the shifting silhouette ahead. The faint, rhythmic scrape of leather against stone echoed through the passage like a physical warning. Beside her, Kai took a single, deliberate step forward, his golden eyes narrowing in the gloom.

Something shifted.

A whisper of motion—barely audible over the ambient hum of the ruins—but it was more than enough for him.

Kai blurred forward in an instant, his coat flaring. "Stay alert," he threw back over his shoulder, his voice low and clipping the air before he vanished into the shadows.

The figure reacted immediately, as if intimately anticipating the pursuit. It darted away with astonishing speed, leaping across the uneven, jagged rock formations. Its feet skimmed the vertical stone walls with an effortless, highly trained precision that made Cana catch her breath—the sheer agility of the movement was almost inhuman.

Kai giving chase was a masterclass in controlled momentum. His boots pounded lightly against the terrain, his velocity rising with every stride. His analytical gaze tracked the faintest micro-shifts in the stranger's posture, calculating the exact trajectory of the escape.

Good, Kai thought, a cold spark of intrigue lighting up his chest. Fast... quiet... exceptionally skilled.

The figure suddenly bounded off a protruding ledge, landing flat against the tunnel wall for a split second as though completely weightless—

—and something about the biomechanics of the motion went entirely wrong.

Kai sensed the anomaly instantly. It was a half-beat drop in momentum. A subtle, defensive stiffening of the left shoulder. The smallest, fraction-of-a-degree wrong angle of the foot placement.

His danger instincts screamed.

Kai pushed violently off the ground, twisting his torso backward in mid-air just as a brilliant silver blur—coated in crackling, volatile lightning—sliced through the exact pocket of space where his sternum had been a millisecond prior.

CLANG!

The blade grazed the solid masonry, sending a bright shower of sparks cascading into the dark. Kai didn't even blink as the residual wind pressure whipped past his nose.

"Hey, watch the leather," he drawled, his voice utterly unhurried despite gravity pulling him downward. "The Crown has a strict policy against reimbursing my tailoring budget."

The stranger didn't hesitate for a single heartbeat, ignoring the sarcasm entirely. The horizontal slash flowed seamlessly into a lethal thrust, dense currents of wind swirling around the edge so fast it blurred into a localized vacuum, piercing straight toward Kai's chest.

Kai pivoted sharply on his landing foot—a fluid, flawless 360-degree spin on his heel. The piercing thrust cut through empty air, the razor-sharp wind pressure faintly grazing the leather of his coat.

Using the residual momentum of the spin, Kai snapped a brutal back kick toward the attacker's shoulder. At the exact same instant, the specialized cloth wrappings secured around Kai's arms unfurled, instantly alive with localized magic. They lashed outward like striking silk serpents, looping tightly around the silver blade and the attacker's wrist, binding them together in a crushing, unyielding grip.

The swordsman's crimson eyes widened a fraction in the darkness. But he didn't panic.

Instead, the stranger braced his free forearm against the incoming trajectory of the back kick, absorbing the heavy kinetic impact with a perfectly executed, reinforced block. The sheer force of the blow sent him sliding backward across the slick stone floor, his boots scraping sharply against the rock before he stabilized.

Kai landed lightly on both feet, lowering his leg with a small, thoroughly impressed exhale. He took that clean. Strong kinetic distribution, reinforced stance. This guy actually knows how to handle a blade.

Kai gave the magical wrappings a subtle tug, tightening the tension just enough to ensure the restraint held, but leaving enough slack to test the stranger's next reaction.

The figure regained his balance, turning smoothly to face his pursuer. The flickering, ethereal light of the cavern finally washed across his features.

He was a young man, likely around Kai's own age, possessing a lean, athletic build with deceptively wide shoulders. He stood at roughly Natsu's height, dressed in practical, dark combat attire. Strands of ink-black hair framed a pale face, but it was his eyes that commanded attention—sharp, crimson, and entirely cool. His grip on the beautifully forged silver sword was relaxed, almost delicate, despite the magical fabric pinning his wrist. He stood with the easy, terrifying equilibrium of someone who had survived so many life-or-death encounters that his body found balance without conscious thought.

For a long, drawn-out moment, the two simply stared each other down—quiet, assessing, and deliberately measuring the threat level of the other. The distant, rhythmic drip of water was the only sound cutting through the silence.

Silence stretched. Kai raised a brow, completely comfortable with the heavy atmosphere.

Finally, the young man broke the quiet, his voice calm, even, and distinctly intrigued. "That was... impressive."

Kai's lips curved into an amused, lazy smirk. "Likewise. You actually managed to catch me off guard for a second there. Very impressive."

The volatile air between them shifted. It remained undeniably tense, but the immediate aura of hostility evaporated, replaced by the subtle, unmistakable crackle of mutual martial respect.

Redefining the Parameters

"What the hell...?" Cana came rushing up from the shadows behind them, her breath catching slightly as she reached Kai's flank. She kept a careful, tactical distance from the swordsman, her fingers deftly pulling a trio of cards from her deck. The golden paper shimmered faintly under the soft, illuminating glow of their magical lantern. "Who is this guy, Kai? A rogue element?"

Before the magical energy could spike, Kai lifted a casual hand, signaling her to stand down. "Don't drop any cards, Cana. It's fine."

Cana blinked, visibly startled by his lack of urgency. "Are you crazy? You're sure?"

Kai kept his golden eyes locked on the crimson pair across from him. "Yeah. If he had any real intention of painting the walls with us, he wouldn't have checked his momentum after the block. We're just having a chat."

Cana swallowed hard, her thumb rubbing the edge of her card. She kept her magic active but lowered her hand by a few inches, letting out a sharp huff. "Fine. Your call, genius."

Kai raised an eyebrow, his smirk widening. "Now then... since we're all acting like civilized adults here—who exactly are you, Mister Mystery Swordsman?"

The young man shifted his stance with a measured, almost unnoticeable movement—relaxing his core muscles but keeping his defensive lines perfectly intact. His red eyes flickered between the two Fairy Tail mages, deliberately studying their insignias and posture with composed patience.

He looked down significantly at the magic-charged fabric still bound securely around his right wrist, his expression unchanging, but the subtle lift of his brow delivered a very clear silent message:

Is this your idea of a diplomatic introduction?

Kai followed his gaze, blinked once as if genuinely forgetting the restraint was there, and clicked his tongue. "Oh. Right. My bad." He turned his head slightly toward his partner. "Hey, Cana. Do me a favor and walk over here."

Cana's brow furrowed in immediate irritation. "Huh? What are you talking about, I'm right—"

Then, the tactical geometry of the room clicked in her mind. She had walked right up into the space directly behind the stranger's blind spot—meaning if he decided to spin and slash, she was well within his immediate killing radius.

Her eyes widened slightly. "...Oh. Crap."

She sidestepped to Kai's left with surprisingly light, agile steps for someone who consumed alcohol with the frequency of oxygen. Only when she was safely aligned with Kai's shoulder did she let out a controlled exhale, the tension draining from her spine.

Satisfied, Kai flicked his fingers. The magical wrappings instantly slackened, slithering off the silver blade and the stranger's wrist like obedient silk serpents before coiling neatly back around Kai's forearms beneath his sleeves.

The swordsman flexed his fingers once, casually rubbing the faint pressure mark left on his skin. Then, with a motion so smooth it looked almost effortless, he slid the beautiful silver blade back into its sheath. The execution was perfectly economical—the hallmark of a disciplined martial specialist.

He lifted his eyes back to Kai. "Who I am," he said, his voice dropping into a cool, detached cadence, "is entirely of no consequence to Fiore or its guilds. Is it?"

Kai shrugged, his tone dripping with casual audacity. "It kinda is, Mr. Cave Creeper. See, this entire subterranean sector technically falls under the kingdom's territorial jurisdiction. I'm out here on a royal directive to investigate why the local archaeological detachment suddenly stopped sending back their status reports. So yeah—I need to know your business in these tunnels. And more importantly, whether you're the reason they went silent."

Cana crossed her arms, leveling a sharp, fiercely protective glare at the stranger to reinforce the question.

The swordsman endured the scrutiny for several seconds, his gaze completely unblinking. Then, he shook his head once. "Your concerns are misplaced. I have nothing to do with your missing researchers. I came to these coordinates strictly out of an academic interest in the structural layout of the ruins. During my entire reconnaissance of this sector, I haven't encountered a single living soul."

He delivered the statement plainly, without a single tremor of guilt or defensive hesitation.

Kai studied every line of the man's face—noticing the relaxed posture, the loose set of his wide shoulders, and the perfectly rhythmic cadence of his breathing. No micro-tremors in the jaw, no sudden elevation of heart rate, no ocular shifts.

He's telling the absolute truth, Kai concluded internally. Not a single drop of deceit on him.

"I have already thoroughly mapped this specific quadrant," the swordsman added, his tone returning to a neutral frequency. "Since you have official state business here, I will leave you to your duties." He paused, his red eyes boring into Kai's with cold clarity. "Are you going to attempt to obstruct my exit?"

Kai shook his head casually. "Not really my style."

The swordsman began to turn, his cloak shifting as he prepared to step back into the winding darkness of the corridor.

Cana's eyes narrowed, her hand snapping back toward her deck. "Seriously, Kai? You're just letting him walk away? He didn't even give us a name or a permit!"

Kai didn't take his eyes off the dark corridor. "I believe his account. His statement checks out."

Cana stared at him as if he had suddenly sprouted an additional head. "Since when do you just take a suspicious guy with a lightning sword at his word?!"

Kai ignored the sass, leaning forward slightly as he called out into the gloom, his voice calm but highly probing. "Hey. Since you were playing tourist in this sector before we got here... mind dropping a tip? What exactly are we walking into down there?"

The stranger paused mid-stride.

For a moment, the only sound was the distant, echoing splash of water hitting ancient stone. Then, he turned his head just enough for the lantern's glow to catch the sharp outline of his profile.

"The structural matrix of this place is active."

Both Kai and Cana went entirely rigid, the casual hostilities instantly vanishing from the air.

The swordsman continued, his voice carrying a chillingly clinical weight. "The internal stones aren't just old—they're alive. The core structure is actively siphoning and absorbing the residual ethernano from any entity that crosses the threshold. Living or otherwise."

Kai and Cana exchanged a brief, heavy look—the sudden, stark clarity of missing puzzle pieces instantly locking into place. The completely drained magical lamps at the entrance. The faint, low-frequency hum vibrating beneath the soles of their boots. The bizarre, unnatural emptiness in the air.

Kai exhaled a long, measured breath, his thumb tracing the cuff of his sleeve. "Well... that certainly explains the localized dead zones."

Cana rubbed the back of her arm, an involuntary shiver running down her spine. "Creepy as hell. No wonder the communication lacrima failed."

Kai stepped forward, offering the retreating swordsman a small, genuine nod of professional gratitude. "Appreciate the data drop. The name's Kai, by the way. What should I call you, my not-so-charming friend?"

Cana immediately delivered a sharp, unforgiving elbow directly into Kai's ribs for continuing to play the comedian during a high-stakes investigation. Kai merely winced, shrugging his shoulders as if it were a perfectly natural response.

A brief, heavy silence stretched through the tunnel.

Then, the young man inclined his head by a fraction of an inch—a gesture that managed to be perfectly polite yet entirely distant. "I am Rei. See to it that you refrain from inventing absurd aliases if our paths happen to cross again."

His parting words echoed softly against the damp masonry as his silhouette melted flawlessly back into the heavy shadows of the lower cavern.

Kai took a step forward, calling out after him, "Hey, what's the rush? We have snacks!" But the darkness remained entirely empty. Rei had completely vanished from their sensory range.

Kai let out a soft, thoroughly amused sigh, running a hand through his hair. "Well. That was remarkably rude."

Cana stepped up beside him, her brow still furrowed as she stared down the empty corridor. "Why did you really let him walk out of here so easily, Kai? He clearly knows the layout. He could have been an asset, or at the very least, a primary witness."

Kai turned to face her, his features returning to their usual calm, analytical composure. "We're mages, Cana. Not Rune Knights. Our charter is to investigate the anomaly and eliminate verified active threats, not to throw handcuffs on every exceptionally strong wanderer who looks a little suspicious in the dark. Besides, he gave us the exact mechanical breakdown of the ruin's environmental hazard without requiring an interrogation. That's cooperation in my book."

Cana let out a sharp huff, crossing her arms defensively. "Even so, Mr. Genius, we technically have the auxiliary field authority to detain individuals within a restricted zone if they pose a potential security risk." She stepped closer, her eyes narrowing as she looked up at him. "Cut the bureaucratic crap, Kai. What's the real reason?"

Kai remained silent for a beat, his golden eyes scanning the high, unstable stone arches of the ceiling before a small, knowing smile touched his lips. "The real reason? That guy is exceptionally powerful. If we had committed to a full-scale physical engagement to force compliance, the localized collateral damage would have been immense. I would have loved to test his blade speed, sure, but a high-tier clash would have structurally compromised this entire sector." He winked lazily. "The ceiling would have collapsed directly onto the ruins... and right onto you."

Cana's expression softened, a highly amused, teasing smirk tugging at the corner of her lips. "Oh, I see. So you were actually worried about my safety?"

Kai instantly turned on his heel and began walking down the dark corridor toward their actual objective, his voice floating back with an exaggerated, unbothered drawl. "Don't flatter yourself, Brownie. I was purely worried that I wouldn't get a chance to properly document the ancient artifact arrays if you let yourself get buried under five tons of solid bedrock."

"Liar," Cana called out after him, her smile widening into a genuine laugh as she picked up her pace to follow his boots into the deep unknown.
