Chapter 35 - The Legacy Candidates

Dawn came quietly.

Too quietly.

Ronan stood on the remains of a rooftop overlooking Sector 14, watching the first light spread across a city that had barely survived the night. Smoke drifted between the buildings. Emergency lights flashed in the streets below.

Far above them, the strange lights remained.

The Judges.

They had not descended yet.

They were simply watching.

Waiting.

Ronan's fingers tightened around the edge of the broken concrete.

The Core Flame inside his chest was still unstable. Every heartbeat sent a faint pulse of heat through his body.

He could feel Layer III.

It was there now.

Not as something he had unlocked and mastered, but as something that had opened a door inside him.

A door he wasn't sure he should have touched.

"You're awake."

Lyra's voice came from behind him.

Ronan turned.

She walked toward him carefully, her clothes covered with dust from the battle. A small cut marked the side of her forehead, but she ignored it.

"You should be resting," Ronan said.

"So should you."

"I'm fine."

Lyra stared at him.

Ronan sighed.

"Okay. I'm not fine."

"Thought so."

She stopped beside him.

For several seconds, neither of them spoke.

Below them, Resistance members moved through the streets, helping civilians and repairing damaged equipment.

Kael was already shouting orders somewhere behind them.

The world had changed overnight.

Ronan knew it.

And somewhere deep inside, he suspected it had been waiting for him to change with it.

Lyra finally broke the silence.

"How many?"

Ronan looked toward the sky.

"I don't know."

"The Judges?"

"Yes."

"How many can you sense?"

Ronan closed his eyes.

The moment he did, the world changed.

The city disappeared.

The sounds of the Resistance faded.

Instead, he saw points of light scattered across the horizon.

One.

Three.

Seven.

Then more.

His eyes opened.

"Twenty-three."

Lyra's expression hardened.

"Twenty-three Judges."

"At least."

She looked toward the sky.

"That's impossible."

"Apparently not."

A voice interrupted them.

"You're going to need a bigger word than impossible."

Kael approached, carrying a damaged scanner.

He looked exhausted.

Ronan glanced at the device.

"What did you find?"

Kael activated the scanner.

A holographic map appeared between them.

Twenty-three red points appeared across the continent.

Then three more.

Kael swallowed.

"Twenty-six."

Ronan stared at the display.

"They're spreading."

"Not randomly," Kael said. "They're positioning themselves around specific energy signatures."

Lyra frowned.

"Resistance bases?"

Kael shook his head.

"No."

He enlarged the map.

Several locations began glowing.

Ronan recognized one immediately.

"The old Core Sanctuaries."

Kael nodded.

"Exactly."

Silence fell.

Ronan remembered the Arbiter's words.

Unauthorized core evolution.

Legacy Protocol.

Layer III.

He looked at the map again.

"They're not hunting the Resistance."

Kael's expression changed.

"They're hunting the Legacy."

Ronan nodded.

"And I'm not the only one."

Lyra looked at him.

"You said there were other Legacy candidates."

"Yes."

"How many?"

Ronan hesitated.

"I don't know."

Kael looked confused.

"Then how do you plan to find them?"

Ronan raised his hand.

The Core Interface appeared.

For the first time since the battle, it displayed something different.

[LEGACY PROTOCOL]

Status: Active

Layer: III

Primary Objective Updated

Locate surviving Legacy Candidates.

Candidates Detected: 7

Ronan stared.

"Seven."

Kael stepped closer.

"You can track them?"

"Not exactly."

The interface changed.

Seven symbols appeared.

Three were green.

Two were yellow.

One was flickering.

The final one was black.

Ronan's expression changed.

"What's that?"

Lyra looked at the black symbol.

"Is it another candidate?"

"I don't know."

The system answered before he could.

[Unknown Legacy Signature Detected.]

Classification: Restricted.

Warning: Do not establish direct contact.

Ronan frowned.

"Why?"

The screen flickered.

Then another message appeared.

[Because the Circle is searching for it too.]

Ronan's blood ran cold.

Kael noticed.

"What happened?"

Ronan dismissed the interface.

"We need to move."

"Where?"

"The nearest candidate."

Kael looked at the map.

"That's three hundred kilometers from here."

"Then we leave now."

Lyra stepped forward.

"I'm coming."

Ronan looked at her.

"You don't have to."

"I know."

She held his gaze.

"I'm still coming."

For a moment, Ronan said nothing.

Then he nodded.

"Okay."

Kael sighed.

"I knew you two were going to say that."

He turned toward the stairs.

"I'll prepare transport."

Ronan remained where he was.

He looked toward the sky one last time.

The twenty-six lights were still there.

But one of them suddenly moved.

Fast.

Much faster than the others.

Ronan's Core Flame reacted.

His chest burned.

The Interface appeared again.

[WARNING]

[Judge-Class Entity descending.]

Ronan's eyes narrowed.

"Kael!"

The ground shook.

Everyone in the Resistance base stopped.

A pressure wave swept across the city.

Windows shattered.

Buildings groaned.

Then something crashed into the center of Sector 14.

A column of white light erupted into the sky.

Kael looked at the map.

"That wasn't supposed to happen."

Ronan stepped toward the edge of the rooftop.

"What?"

"The Judges weren't supposed to descend for another six hours."

Lyra looked at him.

"They're adapting too."

Ronan smiled faintly.

"Good."

Kael stared at him.

"Good?"

Ronan's eyes burned crimson.

"That means they're scared."

The white light began to fade.

A figure emerged.

It was smaller than the Arbiter.

No rings.

No cloak.

No massive display of power.

Just a person.

A young man.

He wore dark clothing marked with a symbol Ronan had never seen before.

He looked around Sector 14.

Then directly at Ronan.

The distance between them was hundreds of meters.

Yet Ronan heard his voice clearly.

"Ronan Sable."

Ronan stepped forward.

"Who are you?"

The stranger smiled.

"My name is Darius."

The Core Interface immediately reacted.

[Legacy Signature Detected.]

Ronan's eyes widened.

Darius continued.

"And I'm guessing you're the one who killed the Arbiter."

Ronan didn't answer.

Darius looked toward the sky.

"Then we're already in trouble."

Lyra moved closer to Ronan.

"Why?"

Darius's smile disappeared.

"Because the Arbiter wasn't sent here to kill you."

Ronan's expression hardened.

"Then why was it here?"

"To measure you."

Kael slowly lowered his scanner.

"Measure him for what?"

Darius looked at Ronan.

"For the final Judgment."

The sky suddenly flashed.

A deep sound rolled across the city.

Darius looked upward.

"They're here."

Ronan looked up.

One of the distant lights had disappeared.

Then another.

Then another.

They were descending.

Darius stepped backward.

"You need to listen carefully."

Ronan didn't move.

"What?"

"The Legacy candidates aren't supposed to unite."

"Why?"

"Because that's exactly what the Circle wants."

Ronan's eyes narrowed.

"That doesn't make sense."

"It will."

Darius looked at Lyra.

Then Kael.

Then back to Ronan.

"The Legacy wasn't created to defeat the Circle."

Ronan felt something inside him shift.

"Then what was it created for?"

Darius hesitated.

"To replace it."

Silence.

The words seemed to hang in the air.

Ronan shook his head.

"Replace the Circle?"

"Yes."

"But the system—"

"The system lied."

The Core Interface flickered.

For the first time, Ronan saw something he had never seen before.

Static.

Then words.

[ERROR]

[Information conflict detected.]

[Legacy Protocol integrity compromised.]

Ronan stared.

Darius continued.

"The Circle calls themselves rulers."

"They were never rulers."

Ronan's eyes widened.

The memory returned.

The vision.

The laboratory.

The figures standing behind glass.

The Circle.

Not kings.

Not gods.

Scientists.

Testers.

Creators.

Or prisoners pretending to be creators.

Darius watched Ronan carefully.

"You've seen it, haven't you?"

Ronan's voice became quiet.

"The laboratory."

Darius nodded.

"Then you already know the truth."

"What truth?"

Darius looked toward the horizon.

"The Circle didn't create the Legacy."

"Then who did?"

Before Darius could answer, the sky split with light.

A Judge descended.

Then another.

Then three more.

The Resistance alarms began screaming.

Kael raised his weapon, then stopped.

He looked at Ronan.

"What do we do?"

Ronan looked at the five Judges.

Then at Darius.

Then at Lyra.

Something had changed.

The mission was no longer simply about surviving.

It was about understanding why they existed.

Ronan's Core Flame erupted.

The system appeared.

[LEGACY PROTOCOL: FULL SYNCHRONIZATION AVAILABLE.]

[Seven Legacy Candidates detected.]

[Five are currently active.]

[Two remain hidden.]

[New Objective: Assemble the Seven.]

Ronan stared at the final line.

Then another message appeared.

[Warning.]

[Assembly of the Seven will trigger the Circle's Final Protocol.]

Ronan smiled.

"Then let them come."

Lyra looked at him.

"Ronan..."

He turned toward her.

For a moment, the noise around them seemed to disappear.

"I don't know what happens next."

Lyra nodded.

"Neither do I."

"But I'm going to find the truth."

"I know."

"And if the Circle really created all of this..."

Lyra stepped closer.

"Then we'll find out why."

Ronan nodded.

Behind them, Kael shouted.

"The Judges are moving!"

Ronan turned.

Five Judge-class entities descended toward the city.

Their presence darkened the morning sky.

Darius stepped beside Ronan.

"There's one thing you need to understand."

Ronan looked at him.

"What?"

Darius pointed toward the largest Judge.

"That one isn't here to fight."

Ronan narrowed his eyes.

The Judge stopped above the city.

Its face remained hidden.

Its voice echoed across every communication channel in Sector 14.

"Legacy Candidate Ronan Sable."

Ronan's Core Flame pulsed.

"The Circle has issued a final request."

Ronan waited.

"Surrender."

The city became silent.

Then the Judge continued.

"Or witness what happens when we awaken the one you were never meant to remember."

Ronan froze.

Something inside his mind cracked open.

A memory he didn't recognize.

A voice.

A woman's voice.

Whispering his name.

"Ronan..."

His eyes widened.

Lyra noticed immediately.

"Ronan?"

He couldn't answer.

The voice came again.

Closer this time.

"You weren't the first."

The Core Interface went completely black.

Then one final message appeared.

[MEMORY LOCK BREACHED.]

[ORIGIN SUBJECT DETECTED.]

[IDENTITY: UNKNOWN.]

Ronan stared at the words.

For the first time since the Legacy had awakened inside him, he felt something more frightening than the Judges.

He felt recognition.

Not of the enemy.

Not of the Circle.

But of someone he had forgotten.

Someone who knew him before the system did.

Someone who had been waiting.

And somewhere beyond the burning horizon, a seventh signal suddenly awakened.

The entire Core Interface flashed red.

[THE FIRST LEGACY HAS AWAKENED.]

Ronan looked toward the horizon.

The sun disappeared behind a massive wave of dark energy.

And a voice whispered through the system.

"Welcome back, Ronan."
