Chapter 495 - Chapter 373

The horned brute charged again, its fists carrying quake-force, serpent undertow, and severance runes borrowed from the shadow knight. The coalition shouted warnings, but Alter did not grow larger, reveal some grand form, or call down a spectacle to make his size easier for others to accept. He remained small, barefoot, smirking, and perfectly composed before a creature large enough to crush him beneath one knuckle.

"Watch," Alter said. "This is the marker art."

The brute's fist fell.

Alter vanished beneath it, slipped along the edge of the impact, and brushed two fingers across the brute's wrist. A square earth seal flashed beneath the molten-dark armor, its border shaped like four interlocking mountain ridges, then sank into the joint before most eyes could catch it. He kicked off a shard of stone, bounced under the second fist, and tapped the brute's knee with his heel. A second earth seal appeared there, smaller and deeper, with a black shadow hook curling through its center where the brute's own undertow had been threaded into the quake-force.

The brute roared, more annoyed than hurt, because nothing had exploded and no wound had opened.

Alter was already gone.

The serpent lunged toward Yanfei and Yinxue, black ichor wings dragging a corrupted tide behind it. Alter skimmed across a frozen wave Yanfei had left hanging in the air and used the curve of the ice as a ramp. His heel struck the serpent's snout, and a forked lightning sigil, shaped like a branching dragon tooth, flashed under the scales before vanishing into the abyssal fluid beneath. He landed on a coil, ran three tiny steps along the shifting muscle, and stamped a blue-white ice hexagon near the torn wing joint. The hexagon spun once, each side etched with a frost line, then disappeared beneath the membrane.

The serpent snapped at him, but Alter had already vaulted away.

The molten giant hurled plaguefire across his path. Alter twisted through a gap in the flame, brushed his palm along a droplet of molten bone midair, and sent it spinning back toward the giant's chest. A flame-petal rune unfolded inside the droplet like a burning lotus before the molten bone reentered the giant's armor. Alter used the recoil of the near miss to arc toward the many-eyed beast, landed on its shoulder, and tapped the rim of three blinking eyes with his fingertips. Each touch left a wind spiral, thin as a curled feather, turning once around the eye before sinking into the mirrored flesh.

Illusions bloomed around him. False Haotians, false wives, false children, and false Alters appeared in layered rings, all reaching with wrong hands and wrong smiles. Alter ignored them because their timing was off by less than a breath, and that was enough for him. He stepped across the many-eyed beast's brow, pressed his small palm above its central gaze, and left a light sigil there, a narrow sun-eye mark that opened and closed before vanishing into the flesh.

The shadow knight came next.

Its severance blade cut through the place Alter had been standing, but he tucked his knees and rolled over the rune-edge, dragging his knuckles along the weapon's guard as he passed. An ice hexagon locked into the guard for half a breath. Beneath it, a thin metal edge mark appeared like a silver nail driven through the flow of the severance rune, and then both markings sank out of sight. Alter dropped beneath the second strike, landed on the knight's wrist, and tapped the armor seam with the edge of his foot, leaving a tiny wind spiral threaded with darkness where the knight's motion changed direction.

The robed figure's living corruption chains lashed from the sand.

Alter slid under them on one knee, flicked a finger against the ground where three chain paths crossed, and left a square earth seal beneath the crossing. A black shadow hook curled around the seal, not binding the chains yet, only waiting in the place where their force would gather. He sprang away as another chain tried to coil around his ankle, brushing it with his toes as he passed. A light sigil flashed across the chain's surface, exposing the true corruption root beneath the false wrapping, then sank into the thread.

To most of the coalition, it looked as if the tiny War God had run around touching monsters without accomplishing anything. The six Generals were still standing. The brute still raised its fists. The serpent still thrashed. The molten giant still burned. The many-eyed beast still blinked. The shadow knight still advanced. The robed figure's chains still crawled through the sand. Only the most sensitive cultivators saw brief symbols appearing and vanishing like sparks swallowed by flesh.

Haotian saw all of them.

His Eyes of the Universe caught each contact, each symbol, each placement, and each relationship Alter had chosen. None of the touches were ornamental. None were random. Earth marks sat where weight returned. Lightning sigils hid where abyssal fluid conducted force. Ice hexagons locked transition points. Wind spirals waited at eyes, joints, and motion changes. Shadow hooks curled around bindings before they tightened. Light sigils exposed true roots beneath false paths. The battlefield was being written through contact.

"You are laying markers," Haotian said.

Alter landed on the broken stone beside him and grinned. "Good student."

The brute swung again.

Alter's gaze sharpened.

The earth seals buried in the brute's wrist and knee awakened together. They did not erupt outward. Their square borders thickened inside the joints, dragging the brute's own quake-force downward into the points where its weight had to pass before becoming impact. The arm spasmed. The knee buckled. The shadow hook threaded through the second seal caught the serpent's undertow inside the brute's stance and pinned it there long enough for Xiangyin to see the opening.

Her spear drove into the Bastion line beneath the brute's foot.

The serpent tried to coil around Yanfei and Yinxue.

The lightning sigil along its snout lit beneath the scales, then branched through the abyssal fluid in its jaw and down the coil Alter had crossed. Electricity surged through the serpent's own tide-pull, locking its muscles into a violent spasm just as the ice hexagon near the wing joint unfolded. Frost spread through the exact membrane fold needed for the next wingbeat, turning flexible corruption brittle. Yanfei's frostfire struck the exposed seam, and Yinxue's froststeel sword cut through the scale line before the serpent could recover.

The molten giant roared and gathered plaguefire at its chest.

The flame-petal rune hidden in the molten droplet opened inside its furnace channel. Fire did not explode randomly through the air. It turned inward, folding the giant's own heat through a spiral of burning petals until the plaguefire erupted through cracks in its ribs instead of flowing into the coalition line. Wind carried the escaping flame sideways where Ziyue's cloud-swords had opened a safe path, and Veridian roots caught the miasma before it could settle into the sand.

The many-eyed beast blinked harder.

The wind spirals around its eyes unfolded into slicing currents that sheared lids shut and broke the rhythm of its illusions. The light sigil above its central gaze opened like a small sun and exposed the false paths connecting its illusions to the soldiers' grief. Lianhua's lotus light entered those exposed channels, steadying the minds beneath them, while Shuyue's law-script named each thread and burned it clean. The beast screamed as half its field of deception collapsed at once.

The shadow knight raised its rune-blade toward Yueru.

The ice hexagon on the guard spread across the transition point where severance power had to flow from wrist to weapon. The metal edge mark beneath it hardened into a silver line that forced the rune sequence to catch on itself. Yueru did not waste the chance. Her sword touched the frozen line and cut three runes apart before the knight could withdraw, each severed mark spinning into ash before it reached the ground.

The robed figure lifted both hands to pull whole platoons underground.

The earth seal beneath the crossing chains thickened into a stone anchor, while the shadow hook curled around the binding paths and tightened only around the chains themselves. Soldiers who had been trapped felt the pressure loosen from their ankles and wrists. The light sigil on the corruption thread revealed the true root below the sand, and Xuanyin's Yin–Yang veil swept across it, Darkness swallowing false anchors while Light exposed the living core for Shuyue's scripture to name. Lianhua's petals wrapped the freed soldiers and drew them toward the recovery line before the chains could search for them again.

The shoreline erupted in controlled elemental chaos.

Fire burned inside enemy joints instead of across allied lines. Lightning ran through corrupted bodies instead of open air. Wind cut eyes and vents. Ice locked rune transitions. Earth pinned weight-bearing stances. Shadow tethered bindings to themselves. Light exposed hidden structures before vanishing. The six Generals reeled, and the synergy between them fractured for the first time since they had stepped from the rift.

The coalition stared.

In the projection hall, the children erupted into noise.

Haoyun shouted that Alter had touched them once and made them all break later. Haomei spun in place, laughing through tears because the runes had moved like a game of tag across the whole battlefield. Haoyang punched the air with every detonation, demanding that Uncle Alter do it again. Haolin and Haoru began speaking over one another about marker sequences, elemental chaining, delayed activation, and battlefield geometry until the attendants gave up trying to follow them. Haolan's voice was low, almost reverent, as he said, "That is not random. That is control so complete it looks like play." Haoxia giggled and clapped at the glowing marks, calling them dancing stars.

Tianlan did not laugh.

He watched Alter's tiny body crouched beside Haotian, and something in his understanding shifted. Alter had not tried to overpower six Generals at once. He had touched, placed, moved, returned, and waited until the enemy stood inside a pattern it had not noticed. He had turned the battlefield into a written thing, each mark a character waiting for the moment when the sentence would complete.

"He is fighting entire armies one touch at a time," Tianlan whispered.

On the shoreline, Alter looked up at Haotian. "Every strike is not just damage. It is placement. The battlefield is a canvas, and the marks are ink. By the time they notice the writing, they are already inside the trap."

Haotian's golden eyes deepened. The Universe projection above him steadied as he drew back the desperate lines he had been feeding into his wives' Palaces. Instead of forcing strength into them, he let the Dao of the Universe reestablish relation: Citadel to Garden, sword to spear, Frostfire to the central field, Xuanyin's Yin–Yang veil to the hidden roots, and Alter's markers to the Generals' broken rhythm. Creation stopped flooding every wound and began opening recovery routes others could draw from. Balance stopped moving his wives like extensions of his will and returned to shaping the field where their wills could act.

The wives felt the difference immediately.

Yinxue's frost became fully hers again, sharp and protective from the heart of her own Palace. Xiangyin's spear no longer stood because Haotian held her footing; it stood because the Spear Bastion remembered its own line. Yanfei's Frostfire settled into its disciplined cycle, flame refining and frost preserving without borrowed force. Lianhua's lotus light calmed into true compassion rather than desperate expansion. Shuyue's script stopped burning with impossible perfection and returned to living law. Ziyue's cloud-swords moved freely again, imperfect at the edges but loyal to her center. Yueru's precision regained its human rhythm, and the relief in her eyes was sharper than victory.

Haotian exhaled slowly. "So even a missed blow can be a marker."

Alter's grin widened. "Exactly. Even failure becomes value if you know where it landed. That is why this art suits someone who insists on fighting barehanded while carrying the world. Every contact matters. Every step matters. Every redirection matters. Stop thinking only about what you break in the moment. Think about what the next breath can use."

The six Generals roared and surged again, their synergy trying to reform around damaged joints, blinded eyes, broken rune paths, and pinned chains. The Abyss did not understand embarrassment, but the fury in their pressure was close enough. The brute slammed both fists into the ground. The serpent dragged the tide into a black wall. The molten giant forced plaguefire back through its chest. The many-eyed beast opened its remaining eyes. The shadow knight repaired part of its severance blade with corruption threads from the robed figure. The robed figure pulled at the pinned chains until the earth anchors cracked.

Alter stood.

"Now watch the stack," he said.

He blurred again, and this time Haotian followed the movement with the Eyes of the Universe and understood more than before. Alter did not touch randomly. He placed fire-petal runes along pressure points where heat was trapped, ice hexagons along transition joints and rune hinges, lightning forks along fluid conduits, wind spirals along eyes and open vents, earth seals beneath weight-bearing stances, shadow hooks across movement paths, and light sigils where hidden structures needed to be exposed. He used the wives' attacks as cover and sometimes as ink, placing a marker where Yinxue's frost cracked armor, where Xiangyin's spear forced a stance shift, where Yanfei's frostfire opened a seam, where Lianhua's lotus revealed an illusion's anchor, where Shuyue's law-script named a false path, where Ziyue's cloud-sword forced a dodge, and where Yueru's precise cut exposed a rune.

The battlefield became layered with marks almost no one could see.

Haotian moved too, not to copy the technique fully, but to understand its principle through his own Dao. He struck the brute's shoulder with a bare palm and left a Balance imprint in the recoil point, a tiny gold-black ring that settled where force contradicted direction. He redirected one serpent wave into the sand and marked the place where the tide tried to return. He touched a plaguefire stream and separated heat from rot long enough for Alter's fire-petal rune to settle in the gap. He caught a severance chain between two fingers, bent its path, and left a small equilibrium point where the chain's force fought itself.

Alter noticed and laughed. "There it is."

Haotian's mouth curved faintly despite the blood still at his lip. "Already teaching?"

"Already learning, brat."

The Generals tried to close the distance at the same time.

Alter's will moved through the field.

Fire-petal runes opened inside the molten giant and along the brute's damaged joints, forcing both to stagger toward one another as heat and recoil turned inward. Earth seals rose beneath their feet and turned that stagger into a collision. Lightning forks leapt from the serpent's wing joints into the shadow knight's repaired blade, overloading the severance runes just as Yueru cut the exposed pattern. Wind spirals burst through the many-eyed beast's remaining gaze, blowing illusions backward into the robed figure's chain paths. Shadow hooks snapped tight across those chains, binding three Generals into the same failed movement. Light sigils revealed the main corruption artery beneath the sand, and Xuanyin's Yin–Yang veil swept through it, Darkness swallowing the false anchors while Light exposed the true root for Shuyue's law-script to name.

"Cut," Shuyue said.

Yueru, Ziyue, and Yinxue moved in different directions and struck the same structure.

Xiangyin pinned the brute and giant through the collision point. Yanfei poured Frostfire into the serpent's opened conduit. Lianhua's lotus shielded the wounded from the backlash. Haotian placed both palms forward and let Balance divide the six Generals' linked aura into separate currents. Alter's eyes narrowed, and the stacked marks detonated through those separated currents before the Abyss could reconnect them.

The six Generals broke formation.

They did not all die in that breath. They were too strong, too deeply fed by the rift, and too tied to the Abyss's command pressure to vanish from one sequence. But their coordination shattered. The brute fell to one knee, its quake-force trapped in its own ruined joints. The serpent crashed into the surf with frostfire burning through both wings. The molten giant clawed at its chest as plaguefire erupted inward instead of outward. The many-eyed beast screamed with most of its gaze blinded and its illusions unable to settle. The shadow knight's blade fractured along the severance runes Yueru had been dismantling since the first exchange. The robed figure staggered as its corruption chains snapped back toward its own arms, suddenly forced to bear the weight it had meant for others.

The coalition rose from stunned silence into motion.

No one needed a speech. The sight of six Generals reeling under a technique that had looked like play gave the exhausted soldiers something more useful than blind hope: a visible fracture in the enemy's certainty. Pyrelith fire struck only where markers had exposed safe burn points. Veridian healers dragged the wounded through Lianhua's lotus-shielded lanes. Marephoros survivors launched harpoons into the serpent's pinned coils from the remaining shore vessels. Celestara riders dove through wind channels Ziyue opened, striking the many-eyed beast's blind side. Umbrel Spire scouts cut shadow roots revealed by Xuanyin's veil, and Eternal Dawn formations tightened around Haotian's steadier Balance field.

Haotian and Alter stood side by side at the center of it.

One bore the stars and the relation between forces. The other painted the battlefield in invisible marks and awakened them after the enemy had already stepped into the pattern. For the first time since the six Generals emerged, the Abyss's pressure no longer dictated the rhythm. The coalition did.

Haotian glanced toward Alter. "Teach me every layer."

Alter gave him a sideways look. "You just tried three on your own."

"Then correct them."

"Gladly. Your placement on the serpent tide was sloppy."

"It worked."

"Barely."

Haotian's faint smile deepened. "Then teach me to make it clean."

Alter laughed, bright and sharp against the broken shoreline. "Already teaching, brother."

The six Generals howled from the wreckage of their shattered formation, wounded but not yet gone. The rift behind them pulsed with fury, pouring more power into their broken bodies as if the Abyss refused to accept that a chibi War God had turned its coordinated annihilation into a lesson on contact placement. Haotian lowered his stance, bare hands open. Alter crouched beside him on the cracked stone, tiny fingers glowing faintly as new symbols waited beneath his skin.

Behind them, the seven Immortal Ladies steadied their own Palaces, no longer being carried, but standing in relation. Xuanyin's veil moved through the sand, Shuyue's script marked the true corruption roots, Lianhua's lotus guarded the wounded, Yinxue's froststeel cooled plaguefire, Yanfei's Frostfire refined abyssal tide, Xiangyin's spear held the line, Ziyue's cloud-swords opened paths, and Yueru's blade waited for the next exposed rune.

The shoreline remained broken beneath the rift.

But now the battlefield had writing on it, and the Abyss had only begun to realize it was written in its own blood.
