Yueru saw the moment the rune path buckled. Her sword slid across the fractured line, cut the next three runes in sequence, and reached the knight's chest before it could withdraw. Alter's elbow struck the same point a blink later, and the internal severance channels inside the knight reversed, tearing through armor, core, and shadow-body alike. The knight folded inward, darkness spilling through every joint until its silent form came apart in fragments that scattered on the wind.
The robed figure spread itself across the entire shore in panic. Its chains lashed toward Alter, Haotian, the wives, the wounded, the dead, the ships, and the rift at once, trying to bind enough of the battlefield that losing its body would not matter. Xuanyin's veil moved before Haotian spoke, Light revealing true chain roots and Darkness swallowing the decoys. Shuyue named the exposed threads. Lianhua shielded the soldiers being pulled free. Xiangyin pinned three major chain paths with spear-light, and Yinxue froze the points where the chains tried to slip beneath the water.
Alter appeared within the storm of chains.
His fist touched the robed figure's chest.
The chains went rigid.
The internal collapse did not move through flesh because the figure barely had flesh left. It moved through command. Every chain had carried a thread of will from the robed figure outward, and Alter reversed that will through all of them at once. The bindings snapped back into their source. Corruption threads whipped inward, dragging their own hooks into the core that had cast them. The robed figure screeched as its body tore apart from within, collapsing into a heap of shadow ichor that hissed against the sand.
The six ascended Generals lay broken across the shoreline.
They had not been defeated by brute force alone. They had been ruined internally, their sacrificed power turned into the means of their collapse. The coalition stared with the silence of people who had been granted salvation by something too frightening to celebrate immediately. Soldiers lowered weapons slowly. Immortal Lords looked at Alter's tiny body and understood that the chibi form had not limited him at all. If anything, it had made the lesson crueler.
At the Eternal Dawn Sect, the projection arrays flickered violently as the children shouted over one another.
Haoyun laughed through tears. "He touched them once and they broke inside."
Haomei clapped both hands over her mouth. "Uncle Alter's games are scary."
Haoyang punched the air. "That is the strongest. He just ruined them."
Haolin and Haoru were already scribbling, neither of them able to keep their notes coherent. "Internal collapse," Haolin muttered. "Core rupture through reversed circulation. Sacrificial overload turned against the vessel." Haoru shook her head and wrote faster. "It is not just rupture. He touched the command path. The robed one broke because the chains returned its own will."
Haolan stared at the image of Alter standing among the broken Generals. "He could do that to gods."
Tianlan's grip tightened around his spear. "That is why he calls it war, not strength."
On the shoreline, Haotian exhaled slowly. "You used the internal annihilation art."
Alter brushed his hands together as if clearing dust from them. "They volunteered. Overfilled vessels, swollen channels, unstable sacrificial cores. It would have been rude not to demonstrate."
"This is one of the Demon God Killing Arts."
"One branch," Alter said. "Do not lump everything together like a lazy archive clerk. The marker art writes the field. This one ruins the body's system from the inside. Different lessons. Same principle."
Haotian's eyes stayed on the dissolving Generals. "Every structure carries the seed of its own collapse if you touch the right point."
Alter looked pleased despite himself. "Now you are listening."
The reprieve lasted only long enough for hope to begin forming.
Then the Abyss roared.
The rift surged with black fire, blotting out what remained of the sunset. The coalition flinched as the sea recoiled from the shore and returned in a single dark wave that stopped short of Haotian's Balance field. Thousands of remaining spawn across the coast, the cliffs, and the shallow rift channels began screaming again, but this time they did not feed six Generals. They dropped to their knees, tore open their own bodies, and poured everything they were directly into the rift itself.
The council observers in the projection hall gasped.
"They are burning all of them," one elder whispered.
The Veridian elder's face went gray. "They are not empowering commanders this time."
The Umbrel envoy's shadow recoiled beneath his feet. "They are feeding the rift."
On the battlefield, the shadowfire spread with impossible speed. It raced across the sand, the waves, the corpses, the broken weapons, and the remnants of the six Generals. Soldiers screamed as the edge of it touched their armor and began pulling spiritual energy toward the rift. Veridian healers collapsed where Life Dao was dragged from their roots. Pyrelith flames guttered as if starving. Marephoros survivors shouted from the harpoon platforms while the sea beneath them ignited in black bands. Celestara riders lost altitude when corruption chains snapped upward through the burning air.
Haotian raised both arms, and the Dao Palace of the Universe flared above him. Balance bent the first rush of shadowfire away from the central line, while Creation stitched together soldiers whose cores had begun leaking energy into the void. Even so, he staggered beneath the scale of the sacrifice. This was no longer six Generals borrowing power. It was the rift itself eating an army to force something larger through the wound.
Alter's smirk vanished.
"They realized I will not waste time with fodder," he said. "So they are making the fodder into a door."
Haotian's golden gaze moved to the broken Generals' remains. Their corpses had begun to glow. Not with life, not with recovery, but with the ritual pressure of vessels being reclaimed.
"They are using the six as anchors," Haotian said.
Alter's tiny fists clenched. "They are trying to fuse them."
The ground split.
The six broken forms ignited with sacrificial flame and were dragged toward one another by black chains erupting from the rift. Bone, shadow, plaguefire, eyes, serpent scales, severance runes, and robed corruption threads twisted together in a hideous knot. The Abyss did not care that Alter had ruptured their internal systems. It used the remains anyway, forcing the ruined vessels into one shape through sheer mass sacrifice. The shoreline buckled under the pressure of a descending presence, and several Immortal Lords fell to their knees weeping before they understood why.
A fragment of Demon God pressure entered the world.
It was not complete. It was not stable. That saved them. The internal annihilation Alter had inflicted on the six Generals had damaged the vessels too thoroughly for a clean descent, and Haotian's Balance prevented the rift from forcing all contradictions into one body. But even malformed, the shape that rose from the shore towered above the battlefield. It had the brute's horns, the serpent's wings, the molten giant's furnace ribs, the many-eyed beast's fractured gaze, the knight's ruined blade growths, and the robed figure's chains spilling from its spine like rivers of black will. Its aura screamed with fragments of divinity stolen from sacrifice.
The coalition collapsed under the pressure.
Haotian did not.
Alter looked up at the malformed fragment and smiled again, sharp as a blade drawn slowly from its sheath. "Finally."
Haotian gave him a sidelong glance. "You sound pleased."
"I was beginning to worry the Abyss had no ambition."
The fragment roared, and the sea split in half behind it. The roar did not only strike the ears; it pressed into Dao Palaces, hearts, bones, and memories, demanding that everything beneath it accept the hierarchy of a godlike thing descending through blood and madness. Haotian stepped forward, bare hands open, and let the Dao of the Universe unfold into a clearer dome. Balance did not deny the fragment's pressure. It placed it in relation to the world that still refused to kneel.
Alter landed beside him on the cracked sand.
"Your Balance," he said.
"My field," Haotian replied.
"My war."
"Our kill."
Alter's grin widened. "Good. You are learning teamwork without trying to bleed for everyone. Growth looks ugly on you, but I support it."
Haotian almost smiled.
Then they moved.
The Demon God fragment struck first with six instincts at once. A horned fist hammered toward Haotian while serpent wings dragged black tides around his ankles, plaguefire poured from furnace ribs, fractured eyes blinked illusions across the field, ruin-blade growths tried to sever the Universe projection, and chains speared toward every recovery route behind him. Haotian's Balance divided the strike before it fully arrived, not reducing its danger, but preventing all six parts from landing as one. Xuanyin's veil swept low across the chains, Shuyue's script named false routes, and Lianhua's lotus shielded the wounded from the pressure of the roar.
Alter entered the divided current.
His first contact landed against a furnace rib as he slipped beneath the horned fist. A flame-petal rune formed, but this one twisted around a black-gold point of internal annihilation, sinking deeper than the markers he had placed on the Generals before. His second touch brushed a serpent wing joint and left a lightning fork threaded with frost. His third tapped a ruin-blade growth, leaving an ice hexagon with a silver nail through its center. He did not race wildly around the fragment. He moved with Haotian's Balance, entering each separated current at the moment it lost connection to the others.
Haotian's palms struck without weapons, placing equilibrium points where the fragment's fused body contradicted itself. The brute's strength pulled against the serpent's tide. The molten furnace tried to feed the many eyes, but illusion pressure smothered combustion. The severance growths wanted clean lines while the robed chains spread in all directions. Every contradiction became a place Haotian touched. Every place he touched became a place Alter could write.
The fragment fought to reconnect.
The rift poured more sacrificial fire into it, and the corpse-mass screamed as the Abyss forced the shape to hold. Haotian's robe snapped in the storm. Blood rose again in his throat, but this time he did not reach into his wives' Palaces to hold himself upright. He rooted the Balance field through the world, the coalition, the shoreline, Xuanyin's veil, the wives' autonomous fronts, and Alter's marks. The relation carried the strain across the system rather than through his core alone.
The wives felt the difference and struck as themselves.
Yinxue froze the furnace seams Haotian exposed. Xiangyin pinned the horned leg when it tried to crush the central line. Yanfei poured Frostfire into serpent tissue opened by Alter's lightning-frost mark. Lianhua kept the roar from turning soldiers' grief into surrender. Shuyue named the illusions before they entered command pathways. Ziyue cut spawn and chain fragments away from the flanks with cloud-bright speed. Yueru severed ruin runes where the shadow knight's old pattern tried to reform inside the fragment's arm.
The fragment staggered.
Alter's will moved through the deeper marks.
Flame-petals opened inside the furnace ribs and turned plaguefire against the corpse-mass. Lightning forked through serpent-wing channels and carried frost into the muscles that kept the fragment upright. Ice hexagons locked the severance growths at the instant they tried to cut Haotian's Universe projection. Earth seals, placed by Haotian's bare palms through Balance imprints in the sand, rose beneath the fragment's feet and denied it the stance needed to finish its roar. Shadow hooks wrapped the chains around one another, while light sigils exposed the true rift tether running from the fragment's spine into the black maw behind it.
"There," Alter said.
Haotian saw it.
He stepped forward, every movement calm amid the collapsing pressure, and drove his bare palm against the rift tether exposed behind the fragment's spine. The strike carried no weapon, no sword intent, no borrowed form. It carried Balance sharpened by what Alter had taught him: every contact mattered, every contradiction could be marked, every structure could be turned against the lie holding it together. The equilibrium point sank into the tether like a golden star entering black water.
Alter followed with one tiny palm against the same place.
The internal annihilation art entered through Haotian's equilibrium point and spread into the fusion ritual. The fragment's six inherited systems tried to reject it separately and failed because Balance had already placed them in relation. Its furnace collapsed into its chains. Its chains fed ruin into its eyes. Its eyes sent illusions into its own command core. Its serpent tide dragged its brute strength backward. Its severance runes cut the robed corruption threads that held the body together. The malformed Demon God fragment screamed as the sacrifice that had birthed it became the map of its undoing.
The rift tried to pull it back.
Haotian pressed harder.
Creation filled the void left by every severed tether so the Abyss could not simply reclaim the space and use it again. Destruction cut the knots that resisted. Balance held the fragment inside the world just long enough for Alter's internal-collapse force to finish moving through the fused vessel.
The fragment tore apart.
It did not explode in a heroic burst that threw everyone backward. It unraveled. Horns cracked into ash. Serpent wings dissolved into steam. Furnace ribs collapsed inward. Eyes went dark. Blade growths turned to dust. Chains fell limp and became black sand before Veridian roots pinned them. The fragment's final roar faded into the rift as a sound denied completion.
For several breaths, the coast held still.
Then the rift contracted.
Not closed. Not defeated. But pulled back, wounded enough that its shadowfire guttered and its pressure released the shoreline. Soldiers who had been kneeling fell forward onto their hands, gasping. Healers scrambled toward those still alive. Commanders shouted retreat orders before relief could become disorder. Marephoros harpoon crews dragged survivors from burning shallows. Celestara riders dipped low to carry wounded away from the black sand. Pyrelith flame teams sealed the remaining fires under Veridian guidance, while Umbrel Spire scouts marked the roots that still needed cutting.
Alter swayed once.
Haotian saw it and caught him in one hand before the tiny War God could pretend otherwise. Alter scowled up at him.
"Do not say anything sentimental."
"You are exhausted."
"Observation is not sentimental, but it is still annoying."
Haotian's mouth curved faintly. "Rest."
"I was going to."
"Inside the Dao Palace."
"I was obviously going to pick the best room."
Haotian opened the inner gate to the Dao Palace of the Universe without making a spectacle of it, and Alter vanished into the starry interior with the dignity of a general retreating to a command chamber. A moment later, within the Golden Text Library's quiet radiance, his chibi form curled beside a glowing starstone, hands tucked under his cheek. He was asleep almost instantly, a faint bubble rising and falling with each breath as though he had merely finished an afternoon of lecturing particularly dense students.
On the coast, no one laughed at the thought of him sleeping.
The Firelord of Pyrelith leaned heavily on his weapon, face drawn. "One touch to ruin a General. Markers to break their coordination. Then that internal collapse against a Demon God fragment." His voice lowered. "What kind of art is that?"
The Veridian elder near him whispered, "Not just art. Surgery, war, formation, and execution combined."
A Marephoros commander looked toward the place where the fragment had unraveled. His hands shook from exhaustion and saltwater cold. "And he did it looking like that."
Xuanyin, passing behind them, heard the comment and did not slow. "That is usually when people make their first mistake with him."
Haotian stood at the shoreline, the sea wind whipping through his hair while his Balance field swept over the retreat routes. He lifted broken weapons from the sand, stabilized wounded soldiers long enough for healers to reach them, and guided shattered ship fragments into temporary barricades so the withdrawal would not become a rout. His body was tired, but this time the exhaustion did not come from trying to carry every Palace by force. The burden had been shared, shaped, and returned to relation.
"Withdraw," he ordered. "Regroup beyond the third coastal marker. We will not waste this reprieve."
The command passed cleanly through the arrays.
The coalition moved. Soldiers stumbled back from the killing ground. Immortal Lords helped one another stand. Surviving ships lifted from the waves with torn banners still flying. Veridian healers carried the wounded beneath living canopies, Pyrelith fire teams guarded the rear, Celestara riders watched the sky, Marephoros harpoon crews kept their eyes on the black water, and Umbrel Spire shadows sealed the last exposed chain roots before retreating.
In the Eternal Dawn projection hall, the children finally breathed.
Haoyun pressed both hands against the crystal table and whispered that Uncle Alter was asleep after beating a god. Haomei said his naps were scarier than the Generals. Haoyang laughed shakily and declared that Father fought with fists while Uncle Alter fought with pokes and horrible tricks. Haolin and Haoru kept writing, their earlier fear not gone but now braided with study. Haolan stared at the dimming projection and said nothing for a long time, then quietly admitted that the Abyss had learned to fear two kinds of silence: Father's calm and Uncle Alter's nap. Haoxia giggled nervously, wiped her cheeks, and said the sea had stopped crying for now.
Tianlan looked at the children, then back to the fading battlefield image.
He understood something else now. The Household of the Universe did not stand because one person was invincible. It stood because Haotian could learn not to carry every fracture alone, because the wives could reclaim their own Palaces, because Xuanyin and Shuyue could expose lies, because the coalition could adapt after loss, and because Alter could mock gods while writing their deaths into the battlefield with a child-sized hand.
On the coast, Haotian glanced inward once and saw Alter sleeping beside the starstone inside the Dao Palace of the Universe. The faint sight almost made him laugh, though the battlefield around him still smelled of ichor and smoke.
"You nap while the world quakes," Haotian murmured.
From inside the Palace, Alter shifted in his sleep and mumbled, "World can wait."
Haotian shook his head, but the faint smile remained for one breath before he turned back toward the retreating armies. The rift still burned in the distance, wounded but alive. The Abyss had more yet to burn. The war was not over, and the next price would not be gentle.
The coalition retreated from the shore, carrying the wounded, the dead, and the memory of a battlefield where six ascended Generals and a malformed Demon God fragment had been dismantled by Balance and War.
Behind them, black craters smoked in the sand.
Ahead of them, the armies regrouped beneath torn banners.
And inside the Dao Palace of the Universe, the War God slept.
