Chapter 547 - Chapter 425

The coalition's turn continued spreading backward through the main body long after the leading formations had already entered the south-eastern roads. From the front, the change looked almost complete, but farther behind, mixed legions were still moving east through captured intersections before gradually bending after the formations ahead of them. The protected corridor curved with the army rather than breaking into separate routes, allowing wounded cultivators, healers, reserve forces, and supplies to remain inside the same moving structure. Nothing in the maneuver suggested that the coalition intended to stop simply because the stronghold had finally begun recognizing what it was doing.

Farther east, the largest demonic concentration assembled since the invasion remained facing the wrong direction. Several companies had already occupied fortified roads leading toward the position they expected the coalition to attack, while additional formations filled the military blocks behind them. Formation guards had spent precious time linking defensive systems across the approach, and officers had finally begun restoring enough local communication that units arriving from separate districts could act as one body. For the first time since Haotian opened the Dao Palace of Creation inside the stronghold, the Abyss had succeeded in bringing a meaningful number of defenders together before direct contact.

The Demon General commanding them had no intention of wasting that accomplishment. He stood near the center of the concentration with several elites around him while scouts continued returning from the south-eastern routes. The first reports had been uncertain, describing only coalition formations moving away from the expected eastern approach, but each scout who returned brought information that made the situation clearer. By the time a cultivator arrived breathing hard from sustained movement through several districts, the General already suspected what the report would contain.

"The turn is continuing," the scout said. "More formations are following the lead groups."

The General looked toward the southern roads. "How many?"

"I could not see the rear. The front was already moving south-east, and more legions were entering behind them when I withdrew."

Another scout returned less than a minute later and removed what uncertainty remained. "It is not a flank. The main body is turning."

The General's gaze shifted toward the fortified western approach his troops had spent so much effort preparing. Defensive pillars lined the road, companies occupied layered positions behind them, and mobile reserves waited along side streets from which they could reinforce whichever portion of the line took the first impact. Had the coalition continued east, the position would have forced the arrowhead to fight through the largest organized resistance it had encountered inside the stronghold. The coalition was no longer coming toward it.

An elite beside him looked across the formation. "If we hold here, they pass south of us."

"They do more than pass us," the General replied. "They carry the main body beyond our reach while we stand here defending a road they no longer want."

Another officer gestured toward the gathered companies. "We can send part of the force south and keep the rest here in case they turn east again."

The General rejected the idea before the officer finished. "Anything we send alone will meet Haotian's spearhead without the rest of us. We already know what happens then."

The western General was dead, and another General had followed him shortly afterward. Those deaths had finally become reliable enough that no one around the current commander dismissed them as battlefield rumor, while surviving reports from the second battle had explained enough of the circumstances to make the danger clear. Haotian had not been fighting alone, and the coalition's strongest cultivators had not dispersed through captured districts. They remained concentrated around the point of the advance, which meant sending only a few companies south would give Haotian exactly the kind of isolated force his army had already destroyed repeatedly.

The General looked again toward the southern roads. "Move the concentration."

The officers around him reacted immediately.

One formation commander asked, "All of it?"

"All of it that can move," the General answered. "We intercept before they complete the sweep."

The order spread through the eastern position. Prepared defenders began abandoning the very ground they had been assigned to hold, while static formation guards disconnected systems that could not be carried and destroyed components they did not want the coalition using later. Those responsible for mobile formations pulled portable cores and linked them to the units assigned to protect them. Companies nearest the southern roads were ordered to move first so they could begin creating a new forward line, while the central formations followed in sequence and the rear remained long enough to prevent the entire concentration from collapsing into congestion.

The General did not tell them to hurry blindly. The force contained too many cultivators for speed alone to solve the problem, and forcing thousands of soldiers through the same internal roads without structure would leave them vulnerable before the coalition ever arrived. He sent the forward companies south through three routes, intending for them to reconnect around a larger junction closer to the coalition's projected path. The central body would follow, while the rear companies would leave only after enough space opened ahead.

On a map, the movement was reasonable. On the ground, it immediately changed the character of the force.

The concentration had been built to face west. Its strongest defensive relationships were arranged across that direction, its companies knew which formations stood beside them, and its officers had established communication according to fixed positions. Turning the entire body south required those relationships to be broken and rebuilt while everyone was moving. What had been a broad layered defense began stretching into several long columns.

The first companies cleared the eastern position quickly because they were already close to roads leading south. The central companies had more difficulty, since some needed to cross behind formations that had originally occupied neighboring defensive sectors. Even disciplined troops were forced to slow at intersections where two routes converged, and formation guards carrying mobile arrays moved more cautiously than ordinary combat companies because the equipment they protected required stable spacing. The rear remained almost stationary during the first stage of the relocation.

The General moved with the central section and could feel how rapidly the formation had lost the advantage it possessed while stationary. The number of soldiers had not decreased, but the amount of that strength he could bring against one point had. Far ahead, the leading companies were already several streets away from him, while formations behind had only begun leaving the abandoned defense. If the coalition struck the front, much of the army would still need time to reach the battle; if Haotian struck the center, the troops ahead would have to turn back while the rear tried to come forward through many of the same roads.

He knew the vulnerability and also knew that remaining in place would have been worse. "Keep the forward groups connected. Do not let them outrun the center."

A communication cultivator relayed the instruction before another report arrived from the first southern column. "They have reached the next junction. No coalition contact yet."

"How far is Haotian?"

"Unknown. Scouts are still moving."

The entire maneuver depended upon the answer to that question. If the coalition had already advanced farther through the clockwise route than his scouts estimated, the first collision would happen before the eastern concentration finished relocating. If Haotian remained farther away, the General might still have enough time to reform several companies across the south-eastern roads and create the defensive front he had originally wanted. The damaged communication network of the stronghold could not give him that information quickly enough.

The coalition had no comparable uncertainty about its own position. Xuanyin watched the eastern concentration begin moving across the command map as fresh reports arrived from Umbrel scouts and Celestara observers positioned around the outer edge of the arrow. Markers that had remained fixed for several updates were now leaving the prepared eastern defense and flowing south through several roads. The movement was too broad to represent a few reinforcing companies.

A communication officer followed the shifting markers. "They're abandoning the eastern position."

"They have to," Xuanyin replied. "We're no longer going there."

Another officer leaned over the map. "If they keep this pace, their leading companies may reach the sweep before we pass the next district."

Xuanyin examined the distance between the coalition arrowhead and the first demonic columns. "Their leading companies might."

The whole concentration would not.

She traced the lengthening demonic movement with one finger. The forward groups were already separating from the center, while the rear had only begun leaving the former defensive line. Every street the first companies traveled south increased the distance between them and the troops that were supposed to support them. The Demon General was attempting to preserve the concentration while changing its direction, but the physical layout of the stronghold prevented thousands of cultivators from making that adjustment all at once.

One commander near the map asked, "Do we shift the sweep farther south and avoid them?"

"No."

Xuanyin moved the coalition marker forward along the planned curve. "They're coming to us now. If we turn away every time the demons move toward us, we give them time to finish moving. Keep the arrow on the planned route."

The command passed through the coalition without producing any dramatic reorganization. The arrowhead did not change direction toward the eastern concentration, because doing so would surrender the advantage created by the clockwise sweep. The formations simply continued along the route they had already chosen, now aware that a much larger demonic force was moving toward the same area.

Haotian received the report while advancing through a broad south-eastern avenue lined with military compounds. The fighting immediately ahead remained limited to scattered defenders and small groups caught too close to the sweep to withdraw in time, and those groups were broken or forced aside without making the entire body stop. The more important movement lay farther north-east. Haotian extended the Dao of the Universe far enough to examine it.

The distant force was too large to read as one simple concentration anymore. Several groups moved south at different distances from him, connected by roads, communication routes, and a common intention to reform somewhere ahead. The first companies were already approaching the edge of his perception, while the largest portion remained behind them and still more troops farther east had only begun moving. The Abyss had finally gathered enough soldiers to create a serious problem and had then been forced to move those soldiers before they could use them.

Lianhua came closer along the inner edge of the arrowhead. "Xuanyin says the eastern concentration is shifting south."

"I can feel them."

"Will they reach us formed?"

Haotian watched the separate groups moving through the stronghold. "The front might."

Lianhua followed his attention toward the north-east. "The rest won't."

"No."

Tianlan received the same information farther along the outer portion of the formation. He adjusted the path of his spear group slightly closer toward the arrowhead instead of extending toward the approaching demons, while the two healthy Frost Rainbow Falcons continued circling above the moving army. There was no reason for him to race ahead and meet the enemy early when the coalition's advantage came from arriving at the collision together.

Shuyue remained among the mixed formations while officers repeated the warning through the ranks. The soldiers did not need encouragement to understand that the next force would be larger than the scattered companies they had been fighting since the turn began. They tightened their spacing where necessary, checked weapons, and rotated cultivators who had spent too much energy during the earlier engagements. The army prepared while continuing to move.

Ahead, the clockwise route narrowed briefly between two fortified compounds before opening toward another major junction. Haotian examined the roads beyond it and saw where the first demonic column was likely to appear. If the Demon General intended to rebuild the concentration before contact, that junction was one of the few places in the area large enough to accept several companies at once.

The demons were moving toward it, and the coalition was already approaching from the west-southwest.

The leading demonic companies did not know exactly how close Haotian had become. Their scouts were searching farther west than necessary because the last reliable report had placed the coalition before the full turn completed. The first company reached an internal road and continued south under orders to secure the next junction before the rest of the concentration arrived. A second company followed farther behind.

Their officers expected to have enough time to deploy.

The coalition spearhead was already close enough for Haotian to feel the distance shrinking between them. He looked toward the leading formations. "We keep our speed."

The order passed backward without sending anyone into an uncontrolled charge. The arrow continued moving at the disciplined pace that had carried it through the stronghold. Farther north-east, the Demon General received another delayed report describing the coalition still curving south through the interior and ordered the forward companies to prepare at the junction ahead.

By the time that instruction reached the first company, unfamiliar cultivation was already approaching beyond the surrounding buildings. Its commander stopped long enough for the next ranks to compress slightly behind him. A scout appeared from the road ahead and reported coalition forces approaching in strength.

"How many?" the commander asked.

The scout looked back the way he had come. "Too many for us."

The commander understood that retreating north would only push his company into the next formation still approaching from behind. He ordered the front ranks to continue toward the junction and spread across whatever ground they could reach before contact. Several streets farther away, the Demon General felt the first disturbance appear along the leading portion of his relocating army.

The first company reached the junction with barely enough time to face the direction from which the coalition was approaching. Its commander spread the front ranks across the wider paving while the rest continued entering from the north-eastern road, but the movement could not be completed before contact. Soldiers at the front were already forming a defensive line while those behind remained in files too narrow to support the full width of the junction. The company had reached the intended position, but much of its strength remained where it could not yet be used.

Haotian saw the incomplete deployment before the first weapons met. The demons had their leading ranks facing him, but their center remained compressed behind those ranks and their rear was still aligned along the road from which they had come. Another company was approaching farther back, close enough to become useful if given time but too distant to contribute to the opening exchange. Haotian did not need to change the coalition's direction to exploit the weakness, because the clockwise advance was already carrying the arrowhead directly into it.

Blue Sphere cultivators met the first demonic line without breaking into a reckless charge. The foremost mixed teams widened only enough to match the section of road the demons had managed to occupy, while deeper ranks remained behind them in ordered layers instead of crowding into the same space. When the two sides collided, the demons held the first impact because they had at least been warned that contact was coming. Their commander immediately began pulling soldiers from the compressed center toward both flanks to broaden the defense before the coalition forced more people into the junction.

Marephoros cultivators interfered before the company could finish. Water spread low over the paving and gathered into directional pressure against the routes the demons were using to expand, making each sideways step work against resistance rather than helping the soldiers reach their intended positions. The effect was not strong enough to throw the formation off its feet, but it slowed the widening just enough that men continued building up behind their own frontline. The commander recognized the congestion and shouted for the rear ranks to stop feeding the center.

Pyrelith cultivators attacked while that correction was still moving through the company. Fire and Metal struck the denser ranks behind the front rather than wasting their strongest techniques against the Blue Sphere line already engaged there. Defensive cultivators in the middle were forced to raise protections while soldiers behind them were still entering from the narrow road, and the next attack landed before those protections settled properly. The commander diverted sections toward adjoining side streets to prevent the company from compressing further, but the decision began separating the troops he had been trying to assemble.

Umbrel teams followed those side groups without trying to destroy every soldier who left the main road. Slowing the movement and disrupting command was more useful than turning each alley into another prolonged battle. One officer died near the front of a detachment, and another communication bearer was killed before the route could be reported back to the commander. The soldiers continued moving, but their orders began arriving later and with less connection to what was happening at the junction.

Celestara cultivators prevented the demons from solving the same problem through the elevated routes. Several stronger soldiers tried crossing rooftops and suspended walkways to reach the opposite side of the junction before the ground formations closed it, but Light and Shadow techniques forced them into defensive exchanges along the way. Some escaped those engagements and continued forward, though they arrived as individuals or small groups rather than a coherent reinforcement force. The company's total number had not changed, but fewer of those cultivators could be brought into the same fight at one time.

Haotian continued advancing with the Blue Sphere center. The company commander had placed himself where the first line was under the greatest pressure, using a broad saber and layered defensive cultivation to keep the coalition from opening a direct path through the middle. He saw Haotian approaching and turned the weapon immediately, bringing the blade across in a controlled cut that could be shortened if Haotian entered too close. Cloud-Sundering Steps carried Haotian beyond the strongest part of the swing and closed the remaining distance.

"Fist of Ruin."

His fist struck near the saber's guard. The impact did not break the weapon, but the commander's arm buckled and the protective cultivation around the blade collapsed where Haotian hit it. Haotian turned with the displaced saber and drove his other hand forward before the demon could restore his balance.

"Seraph Shatter Palm."

The commander was thrown backward into the soldiers behind him, and Blue Sphere cultivators pressed into the gap before the formation could close it. The center bent while the left and right sections continued fighting according to orders that no longer matched what was happening. The commander regained his footing several paces back and began shouting corrections, but by then the company was already dividing into separate local fights.

The second demonic company arrived while the first still struggled to restore itself. Its commander could see the congestion at the junction and refused to march the entire formation directly into it. He ordered his front ranks to form along the north-eastern road instead, intending to create a stable defensive line before the coalition could push farther into the route. That choice preserved the second company's shape but left remnants of the first trapped between the new defense and the coalition advancing behind them.

Lianhua reached the forming line before it finished settling. Cloud-Sundering Steps carried her along the edge of the coalition formation without forcing the mixed teams behind her to spread out, and she entered the first opening as the second company began connecting its defenses. Her sword struck the outer barrier before the supporting cultivators had fully established their positions.

"Voidpierce Sword Sutra."

Space tightened along the sword's path. The barrier did not fail across its entire width, but one section opened enough for the Sword formations behind Lianhua to enter before the demons could rebuild it. Soldiers who had expected to receive the retreating first company behind a completed line were forced to fight while the last ranks of their own unit were still arriving from farther north.

The first company's survivors tried passing through narrow gaps opened in the second line. Those passages had to remain small to keep the defense from becoming too weak, so retreating soldiers slowed as they tried moving through them while coalition pressure continued from behind. Yueru targeted the techniques used to preserve one of the openings and cut a supporting convergence just as more troops entered. Yinxue attacked the weakened section immediately afterward, preventing the demons from restoring the same defense before the pressure reached it again.

Farther behind, the central portion of the eastern concentration was still marching south. The Demon General received the first reliable report while moving with that larger body and learned that both forward companies were already engaged. He understood from the timing alone that the coalition had reached the junction before his front could reform. His next order increased the pace of the central formations even though doing so forced companies arriving from parallel roads to merge more quickly and reduced the spacing they had been trying to preserve.

That compression was exactly what Haotian wanted to exploit before it became a completed battle line. Through the Dao of the Universe, he could feel the larger mass drawing closer and the relationships between approaching formations tightening as the General tried to bring more soldiers toward the same point. If the coalition stopped here and allowed the second company to hold long enough, those central groups could eventually settle behind it and turn the junction into a much deeper defense. Haotian looked across the failing first company and the incomplete second line and ordered the pressure increased before the rest arrived.

Lianhua glanced toward the growing cultivation farther north. "The rest are closing."

"Then we break this company before they arrive," Haotian answered.

Blue Sphere cultivators drove harder through the middle. Marephoros shifted pressure away from the outer flanks and toward the retreat routes, making it more difficult for survivors from the first company to flow cleanly behind the second. Pyrelith attacked the places where withdrawing soldiers compressed together, forcing those sections to defend instead of moving. The first company continued fighting, but it no longer possessed the structure needed to withdraw and reform as a single body.

Veridian teams worked farther along the eastern side where several underground routes crossed beneath the military blocks. Scouts confirmed that one passage could allow sections of the central demonic force to bypass the crowded surface roads and emerge closer to the junction. The Veridian cultivators did not descend into a prolonged underground battle or attempt to occupy the entire network. They weakened the supports along the relevant branches and collapsed them after confirming no coalition teams remained inside.

Celestara cultivators prevented a similar bypass above ground. Demonic elites could still use rooftops or raised walkways individually, but any attempt to move larger groups across those routes drew immediate interference before they gained enough distance to reinforce the front. Most of the eastern concentration therefore remained dependent on the roads already filling with marching formations. The General could bring his army south, but he could not make all of it arrive together.

The remnants of the first company eventually stopped responding to one command structure. Some soldiers retreated north toward the second line, others were pushed east by coalition pressure, and several groups became isolated against buildings along the junction. The coalition did not stop to destroy every one of them. Teams remained only where necessary to keep those groups from immediately attacking the rear, while the stronger formations continued toward the second company.

The second company had used the time to finish a narrower defense across the north-eastern road. Its line was far smaller than the position the entire eastern concentration had intended to create, but the soldiers at least knew where they stood and which formations supported them. The commander had given up on covering the whole junction and focused instead on holding one road long enough for the central body to reach him. Haotian recognized the purpose and continued straight toward it.

Yinxue attacked the outer defensive layer first. Her sword forced the barrier inward but did not break it, and guards behind the line fed more cultivation toward the strained section. Yueru watched the reinforcement gather and cut through the point where additional power entered the defense. The outer layer weakened before the guards could change the flow again.

Yinxue struck a second time, and the barrier bent farther. Ziyue waited until soldiers behind it compressed to reinforce the damaged section before raising her sword. "Dao of the Sword — Tenfold Elements, Severing Arc." Metal hardened the cutting force through the weakened defense, Lightning disrupted the inscriptions already under strain, and Wind carried the attack through the breach before the demons could close it, while Fire and Ice forced the soldiers behind it away from the damaged point.

Xiangyin and the spear formations entered the gap. She targeted the officers trying to rebuild the position rather than driving indiscriminately through ordinary soldiers, using direct thrusts to force one commander away from the center and another farther behind the line. Yanfei followed the spear pressure with Frostfire, placing cold and heat across the ground from which the demons were trying to reform. Every attempt to restore the defense required another adjustment before the previous one had finished.

The second company commander moved toward the breach himself. Tianlan met him before he reached the center, lowering his spear as the two healthy Frost Rainbow Falcons circled above the road. The demon carried a long blade and immediately tried to force Tianlan backward so he could close the opening before more coalition cultivators entered.

"Ninefold Thrust."

Tianlan's first thrust struck the weapon, and the second shifted toward the commander's shoulder before the blade recovered. The third threatened the leg when the demon widened his stance, while the fourth returned toward the weapon hand and forced the guard farther across the body. Tianlan adjusted each thrust according to the response created by the one before it rather than following a rigid sequence.

The commander continued blocking, but each defense pushed him farther away from the breach he intended to close. One Frost Rainbow Falcon descended and changed direction when the demon raised his blade, forcing the guard higher without sacrificing the bird against the weapon. Tianlan used the opening beneath it and drove the next thrust toward the ribs. The commander twisted aside, but the point struck armor and disrupted his stance.

The second Falcon came from behind a moment later. The demon turned enough to avoid taking the full impact across the back, which placed his body directly into Tianlan's next attack. Tianlan rotated the spear instead of continuing another straight thrust, displaced the commander's weapon with the shaft, and brought the point back toward the chest. The spear entered before the demon could recover.

The loss of the commander weakened the second line as Haotian felt the central formations drawing near. The first elements of the larger force were only a short distance away, and the road behind the second company was beginning to fill with cultivators marching south. If they arrived before the line failed, the demons could still create enough depth to turn the junction into the battle their General wanted.

"Open the road," Haotian ordered.

Lianhua entered the damaged section from the side. "Voidpierce Sword Sutra."

Her sword cut through the remaining relationship between two formation guards. Yueru severed the next attempt to reconnect them, and Yinxue followed through the exposed layer before a replacement structure could form. Xiangyin drove the nearest officer back with spear pressure while Yanfei placed Frostfire across the ground behind him, denying the simplest position from which the line could be rebuilt.

Blue Sphere struck the center, and Pyrelith hit the compressed support behind it. The second company began giving ground as its front ranks were pushed backward into the road just as the first formations of the central demonic body arrived behind them. Soldiers attempting to retreat met soldiers still marching south, and the narrow route stopped both groups from moving cleanly around one another. Officers issued conflicting instructions, with some ordering the arriving formations to halt while others shouted for them to turn west and reinforce the failing line.

The coalition reached that congestion before those orders could be reconciled. Its clockwise path brought the spearhead into the moving eastern concentration at an oblique angle rather than directly against its front, with the leading demonic formations already south of the strongest contact and the central formations still moving through junctions farther north. Haotian drove the coalition into the portion still trying to turn toward him, where only a fraction of the eastern force could actually fight at once. Blue Sphere fixed the section closest to the impact, while Marephoros prevented nearby companies from spreading west quickly enough to establish a broader line.

Pyrelith attacked the places where turning formations compressed around intersections, while Umbrel teams moved farther along the column and targeted officers and communication bearers before one corrected order could travel through the entire force. Celestara maintained control of the elevated routes, and Veridian kept the underground shortcuts closed so the rear could not simply bypass the surface congestion. The eastern concentration had reached the coalition as a sequence of moving formations instead of one completed army, leaving the front trying to turn back, the center trying to face west, and the rear still marching south according to instructions given before the collision.

Several demonic officers attempted to create a new defense across the road before the coalition drove farther into the column. They gathered enough soldiers to raise overlapping protections and moved toward the spearhead in an effort to buy room for the formations behind them. Haotian reached the new line before it settled.

Cloud-Sundering Steps carried him past the first weapon line. "Seraph Shatter Palm."

The nearest barrier shattered under the strike. An officer behind it tried forcing more cultivation into a second defense, but Haotian entered before the structure completed. "Fist of Ruin." The officer was driven backward into his own formation, and Lianhua and Yinxue moved through the opening before the soldiers behind him could close it.

A Blue Sphere commander along the widening breach saw several coalition cultivators beginning to turn after demons withdrawing north. "Hold this section. Don't chase north."

The fighters corrected without leaving the arrowhead. The coalition continued driving through the portion of the column already forced to face it, while the demons farther away were allowed to withdraw if their movement carried them away from the sweep. The purpose was to deepen the break in the concentration, not turn every retreat into another independent battle.

Farther north, the Demon General received reports from several portions of the moving army. One described the forward companies as broken, another reported that the center had been attacked from the west-southwest, and a third insisted that the rear still had no clear path into the fight. None of those reports were wrong; they described different sections of a force that had become too long to respond as one body. The General had already attempted to correct the movement through orders, but those instructions were arriving after Haotian changed the situation they were supposed to address.

He shifted his grip on the long black spear he carried and looked toward the strongest cultivation fluctuations farther south. His elites understood before he spoke. "We go forward. The center has to hold before anything behind it can be used."

The formations around them opened enough space for the group to pass. Haotian felt the General's presence accelerating through the demonic column and kept the coalition advancing into the section already under pressure. He did not change direction toward the approaching commander or pull his family away from the arrowhead to meet him early. The larger battle remained more important than reaching one opponent several breaths sooner.

The Demon General moved south through the center of the relocating army while the fighting ahead continued to spread through the roads his companies had been using only minutes earlier. His elites traveled near him without crowding into one protective group, and officers opened sections of the marching formation only when he reached them so the surrounding companies could continue moving. He no longer attempted to reorganize every unit he passed because the reports coming from the front had already made that impossible. The immediate problem was the section of the column Haotian had entered, and restoring the rest of the eastern concentration would accomplish little if that cut continued widening.

The closer he came, the more obvious the damage became through the changing cultivation ahead. The forward companies that had been intended to establish the new defensive position no longer fought as one body, while several central formations were trying to turn west from roads originally carrying them south. Units only a few streets apart were responding to different versions of the battle because orders took too long to travel between them. The General could still preserve a substantial portion of the concentration, but first he needed to prevent the coalition from driving farther through its center.

He separated several of his strongest escorts before reaching the main engagement. Two elites moved toward the western side of the road, where Blue Sphere and Sword formations were widening the coalition penetration, while another pair crossed toward the eastern military buildings to reinforce soldiers being pushed out of adjoining streets. He kept the remaining elites near himself because Haotian and the other high-level cultivators at the arrowhead were close enough that sending everyone away would leave him unable to influence the point that mattered most. None of those movements were intended to recover the whole district; they were meant to hold enough ground for him to reach Haotian before the center broke completely.

Haotian sensed the General coming while the coalition continued forcing its way between the divided sections of the demonic column. Through the Dao of the Universe, the stronger presence no longer moved with the slower rhythm of the companies around it, and several smaller but powerful presences had begun separating toward different portions of the fighting. The General had abandoned any attempt to control the collision entirely through distant orders and was bringing his personal strength into the section already under the greatest pressure. Haotian did not alter the direction of the spearhead to meet him earlier.

Lianhua shifted closer along the inner side of the coalition advance after sensing the same presence. Her sword remained raised toward the demons still withdrawing across the road, and she did not turn fully toward Haotian when she spoke. "He's almost here."

"Keep the road open," Haotian answered.

They continued moving with the formations around them. Blue Sphere cultivators maintained pressure through the central breach, while Pyrelith fighters struck the places where demonic companies compressed as they tried to turn toward the coalition. Marephoros continued interfering with lateral movement along the surrounding roads, and Umbrel cultivators farther ahead and behind the immediate clash targeted officers whose commands might reconnect the divided sections. The Demon General's arrival mattered, but the coalition did not stop fighting the larger battle simply because he was approaching.

The first sign of his direct influence came before Haotian could see him. A broad pulse of abyssal cultivation moved through the nearest demonic formations, carrying enough of the General's presence that officers who had been retreating independently began responding to a common source again. One group that had been withdrawing north stopped and formed across a narrower street, while another shifted behind military buildings to protect the General's eastern side. The change did not restore the entire concentration, but the section around his approach became noticeably more organized.

Several coalition teams encountered firmer opposition as those local defenses settled. The demons no longer abandoned each damaged line immediately because officers now knew where the next supporting position was supposed to form. Blue Sphere cultivators had to spend more strength pushing through the center, while a Pyrelith group stopped long enough to break a defensive structure rebuilt across an adjoining road. The change remained limited to the General's immediate area, but it showed why allowing him time to reorganize the army from behind would become troublesome.

He entered the main road with a long black spear held in one hand. The weapon was long enough for battlefield use but balanced near the center, allowing him to change grips without the cumbersome recovery required by many heavier polearms. Abyssal cultivation moved along carved sections of the shaft and gathered more densely near the spearhead whenever he adjusted his hands. The pattern suggested a fighter accustomed to controlling distance rather than relying entirely on large releases of raw force.

The General examined the coalition formation while continuing toward Haotian. He found Lianhua and Yinxue near the central advance, Yueru and Ziyue positioned far enough apart to attack different portions of the demonic defense, and Xiangyin and Yanfei working through the crowded roads without interfering with one another. Shuyue remained among the mixed formations, while Tianlan and the two healthy Frost Rainbow Falcons occupied the outer portion of the arrowhead. He had received enough information from previous battles to know that these cultivators had remained close to Haotian rather than dispersing through captured districts.

That knowledge shaped his first decision. He did not allow his elites to cluster around him and attempt to overwhelm Haotian through numbers, because doing so would simply bring the entire coalition high-level group into the same engagement. Instead, he indicated the positions around the arrowhead. "Keep the others occupied."

The elites separated immediately. Two moved toward Lianhua and Yinxue, another pair crossed toward Xiangyin and Yanfei, and one advanced toward Tianlan before he could shift closer to his father. Another elite began gathering a wider abyssal technique along the edge of the mixed formations, forcing Ziyue to remain where she could intercept it rather than leave ordinary cultivators exposed. The General did not expect those escorts to defeat everyone around Haotian quickly; he needed them to delay the family long enough to create a period in which Haotian had fewer overlapping attacks supporting him.

The arrangement succeeded at first. Lianhua had already begun moving toward the central road when a demon carrying two narrow blades crossed her path and raised a layered defense that widened whenever she changed direction. Yinxue was forced toward another elite whose broad sword attacks occupied enough of the road that ignoring him would expose the formations behind her. Xiangyin and Yanfei encountered two demons working together, one controlling close distance with a polearm while the other prepared techniques from farther back, and Tianlan likewise had to turn his spear toward an elite approaching directly from the right.

Haotian saw the separation take shape and understood the General's intention without repeatedly looking around. The demon was not trying to defeat his family elsewhere; he was buying a short interval in which Haotian would have to answer him without every failed attack producing an immediate opening for someone nearby. That was a more practical use of the elites than sending them all toward one opponent. Haotian allowed those engagements to develop because the people being occupied did not need rescuing.

The Demon General attacked before the spacing changed again. His first thrust carried very little wasted cultivation beyond the spearhead, allowing the weapon to cross the distance without broad pressure announcing its path early. Haotian used Cloud-Sundering Steps to leave the direct line, but the General had already begun sliding one hand along the shaft. The spear shortened in his grip, and the rear portion rotated toward Haotian's side before the original thrust fully ended.

Haotian used Thousand Mirage Steps rather than meeting the shaft directly. The first apparent continuation drew the General's attention only briefly before he recognized the broken rhythm and stopped committing toward it. He waited for Haotian's actual weight to settle and sent the spear forward again toward the position that emerged. Haotian redirected the point with his forearm and entered before the General regained full reach.

"Fist of Ruin."

The General turned the middle of the spear across his body and reinforced the shaft before the fist landed. The weapon bowed beneath the impact, and the demon slid several steps across the damaged paving, but his stance remained controlled and both hands stayed on the spear. Instead of trying to resist the backward movement completely, he used it to restore the distance required for another thrust. Haotian followed without giving him more room than the exchange itself created.

The next thrust carried more abyssal cultivation. Pressure gathered tightly around the spearhead and remained narrow enough that nearby coalition cultivators were not forced away merely by its release. Haotian shifted outside the point and struck the shaft with an open palm before the General could change the angle again.

"Seraph Shatter Palm."

The impact drove the spear aside, but the General released his forward hand before Haotian could control the weapon through the contact. His empty palm came directly toward Haotian's chest while the spear remained extended in the other hand. Haotian met the attack rather than withdrawing, and the collision between their palms fractured the paving beneath both men while compressed cultivation passed through their arms.

The General's shoulder shifted backward first, though the force did not break his stance. Haotian felt enough density behind the answering palm to know that a careless direct exchange could still cause serious injury even if the demon lacked his versatility. The General pulled his hand back and restored a two-handed grip as they separated. Neither had gained enough from the exchange to justify overcommitting to the next one.

Around them, the elites continued carrying out the separation they had been assigned. Lianhua's opponent did not pursue whenever she shifted away, making his purpose obvious after only a few exchanges. He used his twin blades and changing barriers to remain between her and Haotian, retreating whenever necessary so long as the line remained blocked. Lianhua recognized that chasing a route around him only allowed him to continue choosing the shape of the encounter.

She changed the problem instead. Cloud-Sundering Steps carried her directly inside the next crossing cut, placing her close enough that the demon had to bring both blades inward to protect himself. Her sword entered the space between the physical guard and the defensive layer forming behind it.

"Voidpierce Sword Sutra."

The spatial edge bit through the first barrier and reached the weapon protecting the demon's right side. He twisted quickly enough to keep the sword from reaching his torso, but one narrow blade took the pressure directly and developed a visible fracture near the guard. Lianhua continued following his retreat instead of trying to leave the engagement immediately. If the elite wanted to remain between her and Haotian, he would have to survive the position he had chosen.

Yinxue attacked her own opponent in a similarly direct manner. The elite's broad sword style had initially allowed him to control enough space that she could not simply pass without leaving the mixed formations behind her exposed. She stopped trying to bypass him and began forcing the defense into repeated corrections. One cut brought his guard high, another entered lower before the weapon returned, and the next attacked from the opposite side while his weight remained committed to the previous defense.

The elite continued blocking, but the width of his movements shrank with every exchange. He could no longer control both Yinxue and the road behind her because preserving his own stance required more of his attention. What had begun as an attempt to keep her away from the central battle gradually became an ordinary fight for survival. Yinxue maintained pressure without leaving her position prematurely.

Xiangyin and Yanfei faced the most coordinated pair among the escorts. The polearm wielder repeatedly caught or redirected Xiangyin's spear before she could exploit its full reach, while the second demon used the forced changes to form attacks from farther back. Rather than fighting those roles separately, Xiangyin began using the polearm wielder's responses to control the space available to his partner. Every time the first demon committed his weapon to one side of her spear, she changed the next thrust toward the route the second demon needed for his technique.

Yanfei adjusted Frostfire to the same pattern. Cold spread beneath the rear elite while he gathered another technique, forcing him away from the stable position he had chosen, and the Fire portion followed toward the path created by Xiangyin's pressure. The demon escaped without suffering a decisive wound, but the technique forming around his hands collapsed before he could release it. The polearm wielder was left facing Xiangyin without the support he had expected from behind.

Tianlan's opponent attempted to prevent the same kind of cooperation with the Falcons by staying close enough that broad aerial attacks would risk interfering with Tianlan. The demon carried a heavy curved blade and repeatedly tried catching the spear near the head, where his greater leverage could turn the exchange into a contest of strength. Tianlan refused to let the weapons remain bound long enough for that advantage to matter and kept the spear moving with each change of the blade.

"Ninefold Thrust."

The first thrust struck the weapon rather than the body, changing its angle before the second threatened the shoulder. The demon widened his stance to protect the upper line, and Tianlan shifted the third toward the leg before returning the fourth toward the weapon hand. None of those attacks needed to penetrate; each moved the elite farther from the position he had originally used to block Tianlan's path toward the center. One Frost Rainbow Falcon descended during the sequence and forced the demon to raise his blade enough for Tianlan to continue attacking beneath the altered guard.
