Fresh coalition formations advanced from the interior and took positions behind the Blue Sphere line. The front defenders did not withdraw all at once. Teams that had spent the most cultivation rotated backward in sections while reserve teams moved through the gaps and replaced them. The demons attacking from the west found themselves facing fresh cultivators without the corridor opening during the exchange.
The change altered the pressure almost immediately. The western commander had expected the defenders to weaken as the fight continued, especially once the northern attack and underground force divided their attention. Instead, the Blue Sphere center regained strength just as his own leading ranks began tiring. The flank attack to the north remained incomplete, and no force appeared behind the coalition line.
He sent a messenger toward the northern company demanding an update. The messenger never reached it. Umbrel cultivators intercepted him in the streets between the two attacks.
The northern commander received no explanation for why the main company had not advanced farther. He knew only that his own units were still being slowed by Celestara pressure and repeated attacks against officers near the intersection. He attempted to compensate by committing more people through the road at once. The increased density gave Pyrelith cultivators farther inside the corridor a better target.
Fire struck the intersection while Metal attacks broke portions of the defensive equipment carried by the leading ranks. The demons protected themselves, but the attack forced the groups behind them to halt rather than continue entering the same space. The northern company stopped gaining ground.
At the spearhead several streets south, Haotian received the first concise report while moving through another minor defensive position. A Blue Sphere officer relayed that several demonic companies were attacking the corridor behind them and that Xuanyin had already committed reserves. Haotian extended the Dao of the Universe far enough to sense the distant concentrations, though the intervening buildings and formations made precise observation unnecessary.
"Do they need us?" he asked.
Xuanyin's reply came through the communication channel shortly afterward.
"No. Keep moving."
Haotian accepted the answer without further discussion and continued south with the arrowhead.
Lianhua looked back only briefly when the distant cultivation fluctuations strengthened behind them. "They're still fighting."
"Xuanyin has it."
Lianhua nodded and returned her attention to the road ahead. The family remained with the front.
The decision mattered because several smaller demonic formations ahead had already begun testing whether the coalition would slow after the crossing attack. Scouts farther south reported movement toward a junction the arrowhead was approaching. If Haotian turned around now, those defenders would gain time to prepare while the corridor behind him became more crowded with high-level cultivators than necessary.
Xuanyin continued controlling the defense without changing the overall movement. The western attack had failed to break the Blue Sphere line, but the demonic commander had not yet given up. He shifted more of his remaining strength toward the southern side of the collision, attempting to move around the area where fresh reserves had entered. Marephoros cultivators adjusted with him and increased pressure along the route his troops needed for the maneuver.
The demons could still push through the water influence by spending more cultivation, and several stronger groups succeeded in reaching the edge of the coalition line. Blue Sphere defenders met them directly while Pyrelith attacked the supporting ranks behind. The resulting exchange became more violent than the opening clash, but the demons still could not create a gap wide enough for an entire company to cross.
The commander began understanding what the scouts had failed to capture from a distance. The corridor was not merely a supply route following Haotian's army. It contained enough combat depth to absorb pressure, rotate tired formations, and receive reserves from the interior without interrupting the front. Breaking through required more than finding a point where Haotian was absent.
He tried one final coordinated push.
The remaining communication cultivators sent the order toward the northern company, instructing it to attack at the same time the western formation concentrated on the southern section. Umbrel scouts detected the messengers but did not intercept every one. Enough information reached the northern commander for him to understand the timing.
Both companies advanced again. The western force compressed toward the southern portion of the Blue Sphere line while the northern company pushed through the intersection in heavier ranks. Celestara cultivators were forced to give ground from one elevated position when several demonic elites concentrated enough strength to take the rooftop. For several moments, the attackers created more pressure than at any earlier point in the engagement.
Xuanyin committed the second reserve group.
It entered behind the northern section rather than reinforcing the center. Fresh mixed teams met the demons emerging from the intersection, while coalition elites who had remained inside the corridor moved toward the strongest cultivators trying to widen the breach. The demons gained several meters of road but did not penetrate far enough to split the formation.
Umbrel fighters used the heavier commitment to identify the remaining command structure. Several senior officers had moved closer to the front to keep the two attacks synchronized, making them easier to locate than when they remained behind the companies. Targeted strikes disrupted those officers while the fighting continued. One died, another was badly wounded, and a third lost contact with the northern group after his relay was destroyed.
The coordination began deteriorating before the physical pressure disappeared. The western company continued attacking for several minutes because its commander still believed the northern formation was advancing beside him. The northern commander, receiving fewer reports, slowed after seeing fresh coalition formations entering ahead. Their attacks no longer peaked at the same time.
Blue Sphere cultivators began recovering the ground lost during the final push.
The western commander recognized the change and stopped feeding more soldiers into the same battle. His original goal had been to create a road through the coalition, not lose three companies trying to destroy a corridor that continued receiving replacements. The underground group was no longer responding, and the northern attack had failed to produce a usable breach. Continuing would consume enough strength that even a successful crossing would leave the surviving forces unable to complete the objectives that had required them to cross in the first place.
"Withdraw by sections."
The front ranks began giving ground while stronger cultivators covered them. The commander did not order a full retreat all at once, because doing so would expose the formations to pursuit before they cleared the training ground. One group disengaged while another remained in place, then the supporting group withdrew once enough distance opened behind it. The process was slower than a rout but preserved most of the company.
The northern commander reached the same conclusion independently. His company withdrew back through the intersection while Celestara cultivators maintained pressure from above and Umbrel scouts continued tracking the movement. The coalition defenders did not leave the corridor to turn the retreat into another battle. Once the demons moved beyond the routes they needed to protect, the pursuit stopped.
Several Blue Sphere fighters began stepping after the withdrawing western ranks before their officers called them back. The reserve formations likewise held the road rather than following the demons into the western district. Pyrelith and Marephoros teams remained close enough to respond if the retreat reversed, but no one spread into the terrain the demons were abandoning.
Xuanyin watched the enemy markers move away.
"Do we follow?" an officer asked.
"No."
"They may try another crossing farther south."
"They probably will."
Xuanyin shifted her attention toward the arrowhead. "Make them gather again first."
The reserve formations began rotating back into the corridor once the danger passed. Wounded Blue Sphere cultivators were moved inward for treatment, while teams that had spent less strength remained near the road until replacement formations arrived. Veridian specialists continued checking the underground network in case the trapped company found another exit. Umbrel scouts followed the withdrawing surface forces only far enough to establish their direction.
The demons had not been destroyed. Most of the western company survived, much of the northern formation withdrew intact, and the underground soldiers would eventually find a way back toward their own side of the corridor. The important result lay in what they had failed to accomplish. No meaningful force crossed the coalition route, and the formations they had intended to reinforce remained on the opposite side.
At the front, Haotian continued advancing through the next southern district while the report of the failed crossing reached him. He listened without stopping and asked only whether the corridor remained stable. When told that reserves were already rotating and the wounded were being moved inward, he left the rear defense under Xuanyin's control.
The failed crossing did not stop the demons from searching for ways around the coalition corridor. It changed how they approached the problem. Commanders who had watched three companies spend cultivation without opening a usable road became less willing to force direct crossings unless the objective justified the losses, and reports began carrying warnings about which routes had already been blocked or destroyed. The surviving officers adapted by treating the coalition's curved path as an obstacle that had to be routed around rather than a line that could always be crossed quickly.
That adjustment preserved more demonic forces, but it also changed how those forces moved through the stronghold. Companies that once traveled directly between eastern and central districts now turned north or south before attempting to reach the same destination from another direction. Messengers were redirected through longer roads, and supply groups began stopping at local depots instead of trying to deliver everything according to the original distribution plans. The stronghold still contained many usable routes, but those routes no longer connected every nearby position as efficiently as they had before the coalition entered.
Xuanyin saw the effect accumulate through the reports reaching the command map. The corridor itself formed only one narrow band through the fortress, yet the routes destroyed beneath it and the roads controlled while the army passed had begun separating movement on either side. Several demonic formations that should have been reinforcing the same sector were now traveling in different directions because each had encountered a different obstruction. Their destinations had not changed, but the paths available to them had.
A communication officer marked one formation moving north along the western side of the sweep. "They were ordered east."
Another report placed the force that should have received them several districts away on the opposite side of the corridor.
Xuanyin examined the routes still available. "They can reach it from the north."
"It will take much longer."
"That is their problem."
The officer moved the marker without requesting interception. The coalition had already demonstrated that chasing every force delayed by the corridor would work against the purpose of the sweep. As long as those demons continued traveling away from the places they had been ordered to reinforce, the coalition gained time without spending additional strength.
Farther south, Haotian's arrowhead continued passing through districts where the consequences were becoming visible without anyone needing to explain them. A demonic supply convoy approached from an eastern road while Blue Sphere cultivators crossed ahead of it. The convoy commander halted before reaching the intersection and sent scouts toward an underground route he had used earlier in the war. The scouts returned to report that the passage had collapsed several streets north of its intended exit.
The commander attempted the elevated connection next. That route ended at a bridge already destroyed by Celestara cultivators, leaving only the broken supports extending from the walls of two military buildings. The remaining option required turning south and circling several districts before another east-west road could be reached. The convoy reversed direction without engaging the coalition.
Haotian watched the movement through the Dao of the Universe while continuing with the front. The supply formation contained enough guards to resist a small raiding force, but attacking it would require sending coalition cultivators away from the arrowhead and into an eastern district the army had no reason to enter. He allowed the convoy to leave. Whatever supplies it carried would arrive late somewhere else, and if the demons chose to store them locally instead, those supplies would no longer support the destination for which they had been intended.
Lianhua noticed the convoy disappearing between the buildings. "They're not even trying the road anymore."
"They saw what happened behind us."
"They'll start learning where the gaps are."
Haotian nodded. "Then they'll spend time finding them."
The coalition did not need every demonic commander to make a poor decision. Competent officers choosing longer but safer routes still contributed to the same delay. A unit spending an hour traveling around the sweep could not spend that hour reinforcing a defense in front of Haotian, and every new section of corridor increased the distance some of those detours required.
The next disruption appeared beneath the surface rather than on the roads. Veridian scouts identified a surviving underground branch leading from a western barracks complex toward a defensive sector farther inward. The passage did not cross directly beneath the coalition's current route, but it joined another tunnel that did. If left intact, demons could travel around one collapsed section and emerge close enough to threaten the corridor farther behind the arrowhead.
The Veridian teams did not follow the entire tunnel network. They descended only far enough to identify the branch linking the two sides and determine where it could be severed without damaging the road used by the coalition above. The passage had several reinforced supports and a formation line running through one wall, suggesting that it had been built to remain usable even during surface bombardment. The specialists weakened the connecting section and destroyed the formation reinforcement before withdrawing.
The collapse sealed the branch and forced any future movement back toward the western network. A demonic patrol reached the obstruction not long afterward and found enough broken stone to make clearing it possible but slow. Its officer inspected the damage and ordered the group back rather than spend hours reopening a route while the coalition continued moving elsewhere. The patrol reported the closure to its local commander, who redirected future traffic through another sector.
The same pattern began appearing above ground. Celestara cultivators found an elevated route connecting two defense towers on opposite sides of the coalition corridor. The structure could carry only small groups, but it offered exactly the kind of crossing local officers might use to move messengers and elites without challenging the formations below. The Celestara teams destroyed the central span and left the towers themselves untouched.
A demonic messenger reached one tower after the bridge had fallen. The message he carried had been intended for a commander only a short distance away, visible beyond the buildings on the opposite side. He could no longer cross directly and instead had to descend, leave the tower district, and search for another route around the coalition's path. By the time he resumed the journey, the commander who was supposed to receive the report had already begun moving under older orders.
Those delays did not make the demons incapable of communication. They changed the age and usefulness of the information reaching different sectors. Reports that once traveled quickly through direct roads or prepared passages now arrived after local conditions had changed, and officers increasingly had to make decisions using incomplete or outdated information. The commanders who understood this stopped waiting for perfect instructions and began acting more independently within the areas they could still control.
Xuanyin noticed that adaptation as well. Several demonic formations had stopped moving toward distant objectives altogether and were consolidating around nearby compounds. Supply carts were being redirected toward local storehouses, wounded soldiers were gathered under whatever healers remained available in the sector, and officers were establishing shorter patrol routes rather than trying to preserve the original stronghold-wide network. The response was sensible.
"They're localizing command," one officer said.
Xuanyin studied the new clusters forming on the map. "They have to."
"That makes each district harder to clear."
"We aren't clearing each district."
The officer looked toward the coalition route.
Xuanyin continued, "Let them organize what they can reach. We keep cutting what connects them."
The distinction shaped the orders that followed. Umbrel scouts continued watching the forming defensive clusters but did not provoke them unless those forces approached the corridor. Pyrelith specialists destroyed formation nodes only when those systems supported movement or attacks across the coalition path. Veridian and Celestara cultivators treated underground and elevated routes according to the same standard. The coalition ignored large amounts of intact stronghold infrastructure simply because destroying it would not help the current movement.
That restraint kept the arrow concentrated as the curve continued south and began turning gradually toward the south-west. The front crossed another internal road serving several military compounds and found the nearby defenders already withdrawing. Their commander had received reports from the eastern concentration and from the failed crossing attempt, and he did not believe his local force could hold against Haotian long enough for meaningful reinforcements to arrive. He ordered the companies under him to move inward before the coalition entered the district.
Blue Sphere scouts reported the retreat.
One officer asked Haotian whether they should accelerate and catch the rear of the formation before it escaped.
"No."
"They're leaving the road open."
"Then use the road."
The coalition maintained its existing pace.
The local demonic commander kept his formation intact and withdrew toward the side of the corridor where most of his surviving support already remained. He lost the district without suffering the casualties a direct defense would have caused, but his choice also placed another organized company inside a sector that was becoming increasingly separated from the forces beyond the coalition's path. Haotian gained the road without spending enough strength to make the retreat worth preventing.
The arrowhead passed through the abandoned position and reached a junction where several formation pillars still remained active. Pyrelith specialists examined the inscriptions and determined that the pillars linked defensive arrays on both sides of the road. The network had enough redundancy that destroying a single pillar would not disable everything connected to it. Rather than trying to dismantle the entire system, the specialists destroyed the channels crossing beneath the coalition route.
The formations on either side continued functioning locally. What they lost was the ability to reinforce one another through the shared network. A barrier east of the road could no longer draw power from the western nodes, while a signaling array farther west lost access to the eastern relays that had extended its range. The coalition left both halves intact because neither threatened the corridor independently.
Yueru examined the damaged lines as the formations moved past. "They can still use those arrays."
"On their own side," Haotian said.
She looked toward the severed channels beneath the road and understood what he meant. The coalition was not trying to erase every defensive system. Breaking the relationships between them often mattered more than destroying the structures themselves.
The effect became more pronounced as additional reports accumulated. A demonic force north-west of the sweep received orders to reinforce a southern defensive sector but discovered that the shortest surface road now crossed two sections of the coalition corridor. Its commander chose an outer route instead, taking the company farther west before turning south. Another formation farther east tried using an underground branch and found the connection collapsed, forcing it toward the surface and into roads already crowded with withdrawing units.
Supply movement suffered in the same way. Local depots that had been designed to receive deliveries from several districts began depending almost entirely on whatever resources remained on their side of the corridor. Some had enough reserves for continued fighting. Others began rationing pills, formation materials, replacement weapons, and medicinal supplies because the next scheduled deliveries could no longer reach them directly.
The coalition did not know every detail of those shortages, nor did it need to. Umbrel scouts observed enough rerouted convoys and delayed formations for Xuanyin to see that the stronghold's internal movement was becoming increasingly regional. Groups on one side of the curve were beginning to depend upon resources and commanders on that same side. The longer the sweep continued, the more expensive it became to move anything across it.
A command officer began drawing boundaries around several clusters on the map. "These formations are all responding to the same local commander now."
Another cluster appeared farther east. "This group too."
Xuanyin watched the sectors take shape through behavior rather than fixed walls. The boundaries were imperfect, because demons could still travel around the coalition or force a crossing if they committed enough strength. Even so, the stronghold was no longer functioning as one freely connected battlefield. Several regions were becoming responsible for themselves because communicating and reinforcing across the coalition route required too much time.
One officer looked toward a western cluster whose forces were increasingly isolated. "We could turn one legion inward and hit them before they finish consolidating."
Xuanyin considered the suggestion only long enough to confirm that the cluster did not threaten the corridor.
"No."
The officer hesitated. "They're trapped against our route."
"They're trapped on their side of it."
Xuanyin moved her attention farther along the curve. "Do not turn inward yet. Finish the cut."
The order passed through the command structure and prevented local commanders from interpreting every isolated enemy force as a new objective. Some coalition cultivators disliked leaving organized demons behind them, especially when those forces were close enough to sense through the surrounding districts. The officers kept them attached to the moving formations. If the demons remained inside their separated sectors, they were not blocking the route.
At the front, Haotian encountered another local defense several streets later. The demons had enough time to establish barriers across the road and place strong cultivators near the surrounding buildings, but their commander had also prepared an eastern withdrawal route before the coalition arrived. He intended to delay the arrowhead briefly and leave before Haotian's stronger cultivators could surround the position.
The opening exchanges confirmed that intention. Blue Sphere formations pressed the central barriers while Marephoros prevented the defenders from widening farther across the adjoining streets. Pyrelith attacks damaged the supports maintaining one defensive layer, but the demons did not commit reserves to restoring it. Instead, they began shifting soldiers toward the prepared eastern road in controlled groups.
Lianhua and Yinxue opened the weakened section before the withdrawal finished. Yueru cut one formation convergence used to slow the breach, and Xiangyin's spear pressure drove a senior officer away from the remaining center. The demonic commander ordered the last ranks to disengage rather than continue fighting after his main body had already cleared the road.
Haotian watched the retreat.
"They're going east," Tianlan said.
"Let them."
The young spear cultivator nodded and did not redirect either Falcon toward the withdrawing company. Both birds remained near the coalition's path, conserving their remaining strength rather than spending it hunting enemies already leaving the battlefield. The mixed formations passed through the surrendered position and continued along the curve.
The retreating demons reached their own sector intact. They would remain capable of fighting later, but doing so beside forces on the opposite side of the coalition would require another major movement around the sweep. Haotian accepted that trade repeatedly because every formation allowed to withdraw away from the route made the arrowhead's next movement easier.
The coalition's specialists continued working in short departures from the main body. An Umbrel team investigated a side road where scouts suspected a larger force was gathering, confirmed that the demons were moving away from the corridor, and returned without attacking. A Veridian group sealed another underground branch that emerged too close to the protected interior. Celestara cultivators destroyed an elevated connection after local defenders abandoned it rather than spending strength holding a structure they no longer needed.
Each group returned after completing the specific task. None remained behind to occupy the route it had checked or destroyed.
That discipline preserved enough depth that the corridor could still answer threats along its length. The earlier crossing attempt had shown the value of keeping reserves inside the moving formation, and Xuanyin refused to weaken that reserve structure merely because several districts had become easier to isolate. The coalition was making the fortress harder for the demons to use without turning itself into scattered occupation forces.
By the time the arrowhead reached another broad southern avenue, the map behind it had changed substantially. Demonic formations still occupied large portions of the stronghold, and some sectors contained enough cultivators to pose serious resistance if attacked directly. What they lacked was the ability to move those forces freely toward one another. Direct roads crossed the coalition corridor, underground passages had been collapsed where they threatened the route, elevated connections had been cut, and formation networks were increasingly divided into local sections.
The demons were responding by consolidating rather than wasting strength against every obstruction. Local commanders built shorter defensive networks, redistributed supplies within the regions they could still reach, and sent scouts farther around the coalition to locate future crossing points. Their adaptation prevented the stronghold from collapsing into disorder. It did not restore the mobility the sweep had taken from them.
Xuanyin studied the growing clusters one final time before sending the next set of instructions. "Do not chase the separated forces. Maintain the curve."
The order reached the leading and trailing formations alike.
Haotian continued south while another demonic company withdrew from the road ahead before direct contact. Behind him, the regions already crossed by the coalition were beginning to function less like parts of one connected stronghold and more like separate defensive areas that happened to stand inside the same walls.
Several districts away from Haotian's current route, a Demon General finally received a sufficiently complete account of what had happened to the eastern concentration. Earlier messages had reached him in fragments, some describing the death of one General, others reporting the relocation of the eastern concentration, and several contradicting one another about the coalition's direction. By the time enough surviving officers and scouts reached his command area to compare their reports, the situation had changed again. The coalition was no longer simply advancing through the stronghold; its clockwise route had begun separating forces that had once shared the same roads, supply lines, and formation networks.
He listened to each report without interrupting until the officers finished. One survivor described the eastern concentration being forced to move south after Haotian abandoned the expected approach, while another explained how the forward companies had encountered the coalition before the central body could reform. A third had witnessed the Demon General who led that force enter the fighting personally and fail to stop the penetration. None of them claimed the eastern army had been exterminated. Much of it still existed, but its surviving sections were now scattered across different districts.
The current General cared more about that than the number of dead.
"How many formations remain east of the coalition corridor?" he asked.
An officer opened the local map and began placing the most recent reports. "At least six substantial groups. More smaller companies may still be moving."
"And on our side?"
"Four companies under direct command, two central reserve formations, the southern support group, and several local units."
The General examined the positions. Forces on both sides of the coalition route were close enough that they would once have been able to reinforce one another within a relatively short period. Now the direct roads crossed the sweep, several underground branches had been collapsed, and elevated routes reported earlier were no longer usable. The distance between those formations had not changed greatly in physical terms, but the number of safe routes connecting them had.
Another officer pointed to a group farther east. "These were ordered to join us before the coalition turned."
"Why haven't they?"
"The direct road crosses the corridor."
"They can go around."
"They are. The northern detour is already crowded with forces withdrawing from the eastern districts."
The General looked toward another formation. "And this group?"
"Supply escorts. They cannot bring the carts through the same route quickly."
The map contained the answer before anyone stated it aloud. Every force could still move, but many now needed different roads, different schedules, and different instructions just to reach positions they once could have reinforced directly. The coalition was not surrounding those formations in the conventional sense. It was making the stronghold increasingly difficult to use as one connected military structure.
The General turned toward the officers who had survived the previous battles. "Where is Haotian now?"
"Farther south."
"With the main family group?"
"Yes. His wives remain near the spearhead. Tianlan is there as well, with two Frost Rainbow Falcons."
The General remained silent for several moments.
Another officer added, "The strongest coalition cultivators continue moving around him. That concentration has not dispersed."
That matched every reliable report. The western General had engaged Haotian directly and died. The next General had approached a coalition spearhead already containing Haotian, his family, Tianlan, the Falcons, and a deep concentration of coalition elites, and he had also died. The third had possessed better information and more troops, yet his attempt to reorganize the eastern force in front of the sweep ended with his concentration broken apart during movement.
The General did not need to experience the same battle himself to understand the pattern.
"Why are we still treating Haotian as the road we have to take?"
The officers around him looked toward the map.
One answered cautiously. "Because he is leading the advance."
"He is leading the front." The General placed one hand on the table. "That is not the same thing."
He followed the coalition route northward from Haotian's current position. The spearhead contained the strongest concentration, but the curved corridor behind it stretched through several districts and carried the rest of the coalition army. Mixed legions, reserves, healers, specialists, supply groups, and reinforcement formations occupied those roads. The failed crossing attempt had proved that those forces were not weak, yet they did not possess the same concentration surrounding Haotian himself.
