The coalition did not pursue the demonic forces withdrawing from the southern fighting.
The order passed through the leading mixed teams before the demons had gone far enough for pursuit to become tempting. Soldiers who had spent the last several engagements pressing relentlessly through the stronghold checked their momentum and returned to formation instead of spilling into the damaged roads after retreating enemies. Those demons who could still move withdrew through whatever routes remained open, while the coalition occupied only the ground necessary to keep its own formations connected.
Haotian remained near the foremost companies and watched the retreat without following it.
The demons had not escaped because they had broken the coalition's pressure. They had survived because Haotian had no reason to spend time hunting formations that were already abandoning the direction of his advance. The southern concentration had failed to halt the sweep, and the routes it had depended upon were damaged badly enough that withdrawing groups could no longer move freely between every portion of the stronghold.
Behind Haotian, the mixed legions began restoring their depth. Companies that had pushed through the last engagement moved backward while fresher teams occupied the foremost positions. Wounded cultivators passed toward the healer formations under guard, damaged weapons were replaced where possible, and exhausted soldiers were given enough space to stabilize their circulation without forcing the entire army to stop. The process had become familiar over the course of the assault, allowing the coalition to recover portions of its strength while preserving the threat of immediate movement.
Xuanyin kept the command formations close enough to the leading body that information from different sections of the army reached her without long delays. Reports came from the rear, the elevated groups, and the specialists who had remained briefly behind to confirm which destroyed routes could still be used by demonic forces. None indicated a new concentration large enough to threaten the coalition, although large numbers of demons still remained alive in other portions of the base.
Some had withdrawn from the coalition's path, others remained stationed around structures that had never been directly attacked, and still more were scattered through roads and districts separated from the main fighting by the destruction caused during the sweep. What had changed was their ability to place enough strength in front of Haotian before he reached the next objective. Several intersections that had once connected major portions of the stronghold were unusable, while others remained physically intact but had lost the formation systems that once supported rapid movement through the surrounding districts.
Elevated crossings had been broken wherever they allowed demons to shift fighters above coalition formations, and several underground routes had been sealed after specialists confirmed they were being used to move troops beneath the advance. None of those actions had been intended to conquer the streets permanently. They had been intended to prevent the demons from using the stronghold as one continuous battlefield, and that objective had been achieved.
Haotian expanded the Dao of the Universe while the nearest mixed teams reorganized around him. His perception spread through the damaged roads, surviving structures, and broken formation relationships surrounding the coalition, comparing what remained against the stronghold he had mapped before opening the Dao Palace of Creation inside it. Entire military areas that had once been connected through several routes now depended upon one or two damaged roads, while formation stations that had supported broad portions of the interior were gone.
Supply compounds had been destroyed wherever they directly sustained forces in the coalition's path, and enough command infrastructure had been damaged that information could no longer pass through every district as quickly as it had before the assault. More importantly, the coalition had destroyed an enormous portion of the forces that had occupied the stronghold when Haotian first entered it. The exact number could not be calculated while the battle was still underway, but the bodies, abandoned defensive positions, destroyed concentrations, and repeated reductions in resistance left little doubt that close to half of the interior fighting force had either been killed or rendered incapable of continuing the battle effectively.
Haotian withdrew his perception. The clockwise sweep had accomplished what it was supposed to accomplish, and continuing it simply because the coalition had begun in that direction would no longer provide the same advantage.
Xuanyin reached him while several commanders were still moving their formations back into proper depth. Her own cultivation remained controlled, and she had spent the majority of the assault directing the coalition rather than wasting strength entering battles that other fighters could handle.
"The southern forces are still withdrawing," she said. "The teams watching the damaged crossings have not seen them turn back."
"Do not follow them."
"I already told the legions to hold their current route."
Haotian nodded. "Good."
Xuanyin looked toward the roads the coalition would have followed if it continued the clockwise sweep. "Do you want the leading teams to resume once the rotations are finished?"
"No. The sweep has already done what we needed. We have broken enough of their movement inside the base, destroyed a large part of their fighting force, and forced the survivors away from the routes we used. Continuing clockwise would only take us through more ground for the sake of continuing the same pattern."
Xuanyin studied the nearby map held by one of her officers. The route of the assault curved around a substantial portion of the stronghold's interior, marked by destroyed formation points, broken crossings, and the places where the coalition had already fought through major concentrations.
"We are ending the sweep here?"
"Yes."
The original plan had never required the coalition to trace an entire circle through the stronghold. The clockwise movement had been a method for maintaining initiative after the rear infiltration, allowing one concentrated army to keep reaching demonic positions before the defenders could bring the full strength of the base against it. Now enough of the interior had been broken that continuing the same movement offered less value than choosing a new objective.
Xuanyin looked farther across the map. "Then where do you want the army to go?"
Haotian returned his attention to the stronghold through the Dao of the Universe, this time no longer examining the nearby demons or the roads that continued clockwise. His awareness moved across the sections of the base he had mapped during the infiltration and settled on the front. The main gates remained intact, as did much of the defense district surrounding them.
That portion of the stronghold had not suffered the same direct destruction as the areas through which the coalition had swept because its greatest systems had been built to face an army outside the walls. Heavy defenses still guarded the approaches beyond the gates, supported by towers, command structures, and formations intended to turn the exterior ground into a killing field. Haotian was not outside them. He was behind them.
The clockwise route would carry the coalition farther around the stronghold and away from the strongest concentration of outward-facing infrastructure. A direct change in direction, however, could take the coalition across the interior and place it behind the front gates before the demons scattered through the other sectors understood that the assault had stopped following its previous path. The demons had spent the entire assault reacting to the coalition's movement after it occurred, and changing direction again would force them to discover the new objective after the coalition had already begun moving toward it.
Haotian looked back toward Xuanyin. "We are going to the front."
She followed his gaze even though the gates themselves lay beyond too much of the stronghold to see directly. "You want to attack the main gates from inside the stronghold."
"Their strongest systems there were built to stop an army approaching from outside. We are already behind them. If we keep following the sweep, we give the surviving demons more time to understand where we are going. If we turn now, they have to discover the change after we are already moving."
Xuanyin traced one of the interior roads toward the front district. "There are still demonic forces between us and the gates."
"There are demons everywhere inside the stronghold. We destroy anything that blocks the route, but we do not clear anything that does not."
The logic did not require a longer discussion. The coalition had entered the stronghold to break it, not to occupy every street, and continuing until every surviving demon had been hunted down would consume strength without providing an equivalent strategic gain. The main gates offered something more useful: an exit through the strongest entrance the demons possessed after the systems supporting it had been destroyed from the wrong side.
The mixed legions were already completing their rotations. The leading formations had regained enough depth to move again, Tianlan remained with the forward body beside his two Frost Rainbow Falcons, and Haotian's wives had returned to positions where they could support the next direction of advance. Liora and the healer formations remained deeper within the army, protected behind several layers of mixed teams.
Haotian turned toward the commanders nearest Xuanyin. "Finish the current rotations. No one continues clockwise."
The commanders acknowledged immediately, and Xuanyin began changing the movement orders passing through the legions. Units that had been preparing to continue along the previous route were told to hold formation instead, while scouts and specialists were redirected toward the roads leading across the stronghold. The adjustment had not yet changed the physical direction of the army, but the decision was already spreading through it.
Haotian moved closer to the command group while Xuanyin unfolded the most complete map they had of the stronghold. Much of it came from his infiltration before the assault began, with additional markings added throughout the fighting to show destroyed crossings, collapsed underground passages, damaged formation stations, and roads that could still support the movement of large formations. Several possible approaches connected their current position to the front.
The shortest crossed a section of the interior Haotian had mapped but the coalition had not yet entered during the assault. Another route was longer but passed through territory where several important demonic systems had already been destroyed, which would make movement easier at the cost of giving the demons more time to discover the change in direction. A third path followed part of the existing sweep before turning inward later, but Haotian dismissed it because it preserved too much of the pattern the surviving defenders had already seen.
Xuanyin traced the shortest route with one finger. "This road gets us behind the front district fastest, but it crosses several military routes that were still active when you infiltrated."
"Some of them will still have demons moving through them," Haotian said. "We keep the coalition concentrated on the route and destroy only what blocks the march. If an enemy group withdraws into the surrounding districts and cannot threaten us from there, we leave it alone."
One of the legion commanders studied the same route from the opposite side of the map. "Then the leading legion should not spread into the side districts even if we encounter resistance along more than one road."
"Keep the legion concentrated. The route matters more than the territory around it."
That restriction mattered because the new direction would carry the coalition across areas it had not already stripped of every useful military system. There would still be demonic formations, defensive structures, and scattered forces along the way, but none of them needed to become separate objectives. The coalition only needed enough control around its march to reach the rear of the front-defense district intact and before the demons understood the full purpose of the turn.
Xuanyin shifted her attention toward the gate district. "Once we reach the rear of the front defenses, do we attack the gates immediately?"
"No. We destroy the systems supporting them first. The gates are only the final obstruction."
She looked over the structures marked around the entrance. "Do we know enough about those systems from your infiltration to identify what matters?"
"I know where the major structures are. I did not examine every formation relationship closely because my objective then was to map the stronghold and open a path for the coalition without revealing that I was inside. Once we reach the district, I can examine the active relationships openly through the Dao of the Universe."
Xuanyin adjusted the route markers. "Then the legions stay concentrated until we reach the rear of the defense district. Once we are there, you examine the formation infrastructure before we commit the front."
"Exactly. I do not want anyone attacking the visible defenses before we know which systems are actually supporting them."
Tianlan had joined the edge of the command group while the route was being discussed. The two Frost Rainbow Falcons remained nearby, one perched on the damaged roof of a military structure while the other circled above the coalition with the Celestara formations. Tianlan rested his spear against one shoulder and studied the front-defense district on the map.
"If those defenses were built to face outward, can the towers still attack us from the interior?"
"Some can," Haotian said. "Their weapons may be able to turn, but their strongest firing patterns, barriers, and formation relationships were built around the exterior battlefield. Approaching from behind does not make them harmless, but it does mean they cannot use the entire defensive system against us the way they could against an army outside the walls."
Tianlan followed the positions around the gates. "Then we need to reach the support structures before they can redirect enough of those systems inward."
"That is the priority."
The front-defense district had likely spent the entire assault receiving fragmented information about fighting deeper inside the stronghold. Local commanders there would know the base had been penetrated and that large sections of the interior were under attack, but nothing the coalition had done so far suggested it would suddenly abandon the clockwise sweep and drive directly toward the gates. By the time reliable information reached them, the coalition could already be crossing the interior.
Xuanyin looked over the surviving road network again. "We should keep the change in direction as contained as possible until the leading legions are already committed to the new route."
"Use only the scouts we need. Umbrel checks the road ahead and the side routes immediately connected to it. No one spreads into neighboring districts."
One of the Umbrel commanders stepped closer. "If we find a defended position directly on the route, do you want us to clear it before the legion arrives?"
"No. Report it and keep moving. I do not want Umbrel teams fighting separately ahead of the main formation."
"How far ahead should we operate?"
"Far enough to identify anything large enough to delay the march. If ordinary companies are moving away from the route, leave them alone."
The commander withdrew to organize his teams, and the same restraint applied to the other coalition specialists. Veridian teams would examine underground routes only when those routes crossed beneath the march or could allow demonic forces to emerge inside the formation. Celestara cultivators would control the elevations directly above and beside the coalition rather than sweeping through every tower visible from the route, while Pyrelith and Marephoros members would remain embedded in their mixed formations.
Liora and the healer commanders received the new route shortly afterward. The treatment formations would remain farther back inside the coalition, protected by multiple mixed layers, and wounded cultivators who could no longer continue would be carried with the army rather than left behind in temporary treatment points.
Liora studied the projected path for several moments. "Once the gates are broken, are we leaving the stronghold through the front?"
"That is the plan."
"Then I would rather keep the wounded with the moving formation instead of establishing another treatment point inside the stronghold."
Xuanyin nodded. "Agreed. We keep the healer formations mobile until the entire army is outside."
Liora looked toward Haotian. "Do you expect heavier fighting near the gates?"
"The fighting may be heavier because the front district still contains some of the strongest intact defensive infrastructure in the stronghold. It will not be because the demons are prepared for our approach."
"Then I will keep the healers deeper than usual until those systems are destroyed."
Shuyue remained with the healer and recovery formations rather than moving to the front immediately. Her role during the next movement would be to support tired teams as they rotated backward, help stabilize cultivators whose circulation had been strained by repeated combat, and preserve enough strength to move forward if the family needed her during the attack on the gate district.
Lianhua studied the new route on Xuanyin's map. "The shortest path crosses three major military roads before we reach the front district."
"We should expect demons along some of them," Haotian said, "but they will not know our new direction soon enough to prepare all three. We break whatever blocks the march and leave anything that moves away from us."
Yueru looked toward the gate district. "Once they realize we have turned, some of the forces behind us may try to follow."
"Let the rear formations handle anything that actually catches up. We do not turn the spearhead around for enemies behind us."
Ziyue followed the route back through the damaged sections the coalition had already crossed. "They will have to move through the same broken roads and crossings we left behind."
"That will slow them further."
Xiangyin adjusted her spear against her shoulder. "Then we stay with the leading formations."
"Yes. We need enough strength near the front to remove anything capable of slowing the legion."
Yinxue looked toward Tianlan and the two Frost Rainbow Falcons. "And Tianlan stays with the spearhead?"
"He stays close to us. The Falcons remain with him and the Celestara formations unless the situation requires otherwise."
Xuanyin finished moving the last formation markers. "The leading legion can begin turning as soon as the Umbrel scouts confirm the first road."
Haotian looked toward the nearest legion commander. "How much longer before the current rotations are complete?"
"Most of them are finished. The final two companies are moving out of the front now."
"Then begin as soon as the road is confirmed. Do not hold the entire army in place for formations that are already rotating into position."
The front district remained almost untouched on the map compared with the damaged path the coalition had left behind. Towers, gate supports, command structures, and major formation nodes were still marked as intact because the assault had never approached them directly. The demons had built their strongest entrance under the assumption that the greatest threat would come from beyond the stronghold walls, and the coalition was about to reach those same defenses from the side they had been designed to protect.
Xuanyin looked beyond the gates marked on the map. "Once the support systems are destroyed and the gates are open, are we continuing the attack outside?"
"No. We march the coalition out through the front and end the assault there. We have already accomplished what we came inside to do."
"Then I will structure the movement so the later legions continue through the gates instead of stopping outside to establish another front."
That settled the final objective. The first assault had already inflicted enormous damage inside the stronghold, and the new direction would finish the operation by breaking the front-defense district from behind and giving the coalition a controlled route out. Once the army cleared the gates, Haotian could bring everyone back into the Dao Palace of Creation and allow the wounded, exhausted, and depleted cultivators to recover before deciding where the next assault would begin.
The first Umbrel scouts returned while the final companies were still settling into their new positions, bringing confirmation that the roads toward the front-defense district remained open enough for the mixed legions to cross the stronghold without being compressed into a single narrow route. Demonic forces were still moving through several of the military roads ahead, but their movement reflected the coalition's previous clockwise direction rather than the sudden turn Haotian had just ordered. Some companies were traveling toward positions the coalition no longer intended to approach, while others remained scattered around damaged intersections and surviving formation stations.
Haotian ordered the coalition forward immediately. The leading mixed formations entered the new route first, and the change in direction worked backward through the army as each layer followed the space opened by the one before it. Xuanyin remained farther within the formation, controlling the rate of the turn so the wounded, healer groups, reserve companies, and supplies could move with the combat formations rather than being compressed between them. Within a short distance, the entire army had abandoned the clockwise route and begun cutting across the interior of the stronghold.
The movement itself required little explanation to the soldiers. They had already spent the assault advancing through damaged roads, narrowing around collapsed structures, rotating exhausted companies out of the front, and expanding again whenever the terrain allowed it. Changing direction simply placed those familiar movements onto a new route, and the mixed teams adjusted without losing the formation depth that had allowed them to continue fighting for so long.
The demons farther along the old sweep continued responding to information that had already become outdated. Scouts reported companies shifting toward roads the coalition had abandoned, while other groups remained around positions they expected Haotian to reach later in the clockwise advance. Messengers were moving between those forces, but the distance between observation and response worked against them every time the coalition changed the battlefield faster than the information could travel.
The first military road on the new route was already occupied when the coalition reached it. A demonic company had been moving through the intersection from east to west, and the soldiers nearest the crossing immediately began turning toward the approaching Blue Sphere formations while those farther back continued moving under the older order. The demons began forming a defensive line while already repositioning, with shielded cultivators pushing toward the road and stronger fighters trying to create enough room behind them for the rest of the company to turn.
The coalition reached them before that process finished. Blue Sphere cultivators took the first attacks while Marephoros support kept the formation stable over broken paving, and the teams behind them continued moving forward instead of spreading into the adjoining streets. As the demons compressed around the center of the road, Pyrelith cultivators sent concentrated attacks into the densest parts of the formation, forcing the defenders to spend more strength holding the line while soldiers farther east were still trying to join it.
Haotian stayed inside that pressure rather than moving far ahead of it. When one of the heavier demonic cultivators tried to establish himself in the center and give the defenders something solid to organize around, Haotian intercepted him before the position could settle. He deflected the first weapon strike, entered the shorter distance where the heavy weapon became harder to recover, and drove Fist of Ruin through the man's protection, forcing him backward into the ranks he had been trying to stabilize. The Blue Sphere teams moved through the disruption immediately, and Xiangyin's spear prevented the nearest defenders from closing the opening while the formation behind them continued advancing.
Lianhua and Yinxue remained near the western edge of the same movement, dealing only with demons who tried to widen the fight into neighboring streets and threaten the coalition's side. Lianhua's Cloud-Sundering Steps allowed her to intercept those movements before they became separate engagements, and the Voidpierce Sword Sutra weakened the relationships holding small defensive groups together. Yinxue followed those openings without ranging away from the main body, using the Sword Dao to force the affected defenders back toward their own company.
The demonic commander eventually recognized that continuing to hold the crossing would only trap more of his soldiers against an army that had no intention of stopping there. Orders passed through the company, and the defenders began withdrawing east and north while leaving enough people behind to prevent the movement from becoming a rout. Haotian allowed them to go as soon as the road opened, and the mixed teams resumed the march before the last of the withdrawing demons had disappeared from the surrounding streets.
That pattern continued through the next section of the stronghold. Some demon groups attempted to turn and defend when they realized the coalition was moving through their area, while others cleared the roads rather than sacrifice soldiers around positions that had never been prepared to receive an attack from that direction. Haotian held the army to the same rule each time: if a group moved away from the route, it was ignored; if it stayed directly ahead, the coalition pushed through it until the road opened again.
One smaller company tried to use an intact barrier node to strengthen an intersection before the coalition arrived. The node activated while the defenders were still taking position, but Yueru and Ziyue reached supporting distance before the company could settle behind it. Yueru's Lightning disrupted the active channels long enough for Ziyue to cut through one of the exposed physical relationships, and the barrier weakened while the mixed teams were already pressing the defenders from the front.
Once the node could no longer carry enough of the defensive burden, the demon company withdrew through the northern road rather than remain around a position that was becoming less useful with every exchange. The coalition passed the node without destroying it completely. Veridian specialists confirmed that it could no longer influence the immediate road strongly enough to threaten the march, and no one remained behind to dismantle the rest of the structure.
The farther they crossed the interior, the more obvious the lag in the demonic response became. Umbrel scouts repeatedly found companies moving toward the old clockwise route or arriving at positions after the coalition had already left them behind. Some forces eventually began following the new route, but they had to cross the damage left by the earlier sweep, where broken intersections forced detours, collapsed passages eliminated shortcuts, and destroyed formation systems deprived them of several ways the stronghold had previously supported rapid movement.
Xuanyin watched those reports from the rear and kept the existing defensive depth instead of pulling additional companies away from the front. Until a pursuing force actually reached the coalition, there was no reason to slow the entire army simply because the demons had finally learned where Haotian had gone. The second major military road therefore passed with little more than a brief exchange, with the coalition pressing a rear guard only until the road opened before continuing forward.
The character of the stronghold began shifting as they approached the front. The roads widened, military structures became larger, and more of the surviving formation infrastructure connected to outward-facing systems rather than the local interior defenses the coalition had already broken. Haotian recognized several of those relationships from his infiltration and used the Dao of the Universe intermittently to keep the army on the most direct useful route.
