Chapter 23 - Chapter 23: The House of Forgotten Blood

The night hung heavy above them, darker than any sky Elena had ever seen. The abandoned estate towered like a forgotten skeleton, its windows shattered, its gates crooked, its walls whispering secrets buried long before she was born. The forest around it felt alive—watching, breathing, waiting.

Noah stood beside her, his face pale under the moonlight. Ten years of death had carved something in him—something sharp, wounded, and dangerous.

"Elena," he said quietly. "Before we go inside, you need to understand—what's in here… it'll change everything you believe about our family."

She swallowed hard. "Noah, my life has been changing every minute since you appeared."

He managed a sad smile. "Still stubborn, little dove."

He pushed open the door.

The smell of dust, mold, and old betrayal rushed out.

They stepped inside.

1. The House Breathes Again

The floor creaked beneath their feet. The wallpaper was peeling, the chandeliers broken, and long cracks split across the ceiling like veins.

Elena touched the wall, and a chill ran through her.

"Noah… what happened here?"

He didn't answer. Instead, he walked toward a massive portrait still hanging above the old fireplace. Elena gasped when she saw it.

Their father.

But not alone.

He stood with another man—one she didn't recognize. They were shaking hands. Behind them was a document on a table, stamped in red wax. A contract.

Her heart skipped. "Who is that?"

"That," Noah said bitterly, "is Zayn's father."

Elena's breath caught. "So our families… they were tied long before the marriage."

"Long before we were born."

He moved the portrait aside, revealing a safe built into the wall.

Elena stared. "You know the code?"

"I lived here. I died here. I know everything."

He entered a combination.

Click.

Inside were documents—hundreds of them, neatly organized, each stamped with symbols she didn't understand.

Noah pulled one out and handed it to her.

"Read."

She scanned the first page.

"Bloodline Alliance Contract

Year: 1993

Families: Valverde—Aurora—Hale."

Her fingers trembled. "Aurora… that's Mother's family."

He nodded. "The three families agreed to merge bloodlines to prevent a fourth family from seizing power."

"What fourth family?"

"The Silver Ring."

Elena froze.

That's what the attackers wore.

"That group," Noah said softly, "has been hunting us since Father refused to sell us."

"Sell us?" Elena whispered.

Noah met her eyes. "Our blood is rare, Elena. Not medically—politically. Symbolically. Historically. Whatever it is… they believe only our families can unlock something they want."

"What thing?"

He sighed. "That's what I never figured out."

Elena felt her heart pounding painfully. "And me marrying Zayn… was part of this contract?"

"Worse," Noah said. "You were supposed to marry someone else originally."

Her eyes widened. "Who?"

Noah opened another file.

Inside was a photo.

Zayn.

But younger—maybe seventeen.

"Zayn?" she whispered.

"No." Noah turned the page.

Another photo. Similar face. Same eyes.

But colder.

"That," Noah said, "is Zayn's twin brother."

Elena's blood ran cold. "Twin…?"

"He died at birth. Or so we were told."

The documents showed otherwise.

He lived to age eight.

Then disappeared.

"Elena," Noah whispered. "Zayn wasn't the original heir. His brother was. When he vanished, they shifted the alliance to Zayn. And when I tried to expose the truth… the Silver Ring came for me."

Elena felt nauseous. "Noah… what if Zayn knows?"

"That's why I brought you here."

2. Footsteps

A floorboard groaned above them.

Elena froze.

"Noah… someone's here."

He nodded. "Hide."

They ducked behind an old cabinet. The footsteps grew louder. Slow. Heavy. Intentional.

Then a voice drifted down the hall.

"Bring them alive."

Elena's heart dropped.

Silver Ring.

Noah grabbed her hand and mouthed: Run.

But before they could move, the door smashed open.

A masked man entered, scanning the room.

Noah lunged first.

They crashed to the floor, fists flying, grunts echoing. Another man stormed in, swinging a metal rod—

"Noah!" Elena cried.

The rod slammed into Noah's head.

He hit the ground, blood spilling.

"STOP!" she screamed.

Two arms grabbed her from behind, pinning her. She kicked wildly, but the man laughed in her ear.

"You should've stayed hidden, little dove."

Her stomach twisted.

They knew her.

They always had.

"Please," she begged. "Not my brother. Please don't hurt him."

The man lifted the rod again.

Then—

Bang.

The attacker dropped dead.

The man holding Elena let go, shocked.

She fell forward, gasping.

Boots approached.

She turned.

Zayn.

Rain dripping from his coat, gun in hand, eyes burning with fury.

"Elena," he breathed.

Her chest tightened. "Zayn…"

He didn't speak. He only walked past her and knelt beside Noah, checking his pulse.

"He's alive," Zayn said. "Barely. We need to leave. Now."

Elena stared at him, trembling. "How… how did you find us?"

His jaw clenched. "I followed the people hunting you."

She blinked, tears blurring her vision. "Zayn… they want me. They want our future child."

Zayn froze.

"Elena… you're not—"

"No."

His relief was visible… but brief.

Because the windows shattered.

Three masked men stormed in.

Zayn shoved Elena behind him. "Stay back!"

Gunfire exploded.

Noah groaned awake.

Elena screamed.

Zayn grabbed her hand. "We don't fight. We run."

3. The Fall

They sprinted through hallways as bullets tore into walls. Noah staggered but kept moving, leaning on Zayn for balance.

Outside, a black SUV roared toward them.

"Zayn!" Elena screamed.

He pushed her aside.

The SUV crashed into the stone fountain.

Smoke. Fire. Screams.

They ran into the forest.

Behind them, the Silver Ring men regrouped.

"Don't let them escape!"

"We need the girl alive!"

"Kill the brothers!"

Branches whipped their skin. Mud swallowed their shoes. The forest closed around them.

"Elena—hold on to me!" Zayn breathed.

"How far?" she cried.

"Not far."

But then the ground vanished.

They tumbled down a ravine, crashing through leaves and rocks.

Elena hit the ground hard.

Pain shot through her body.

"Noah!" she crawled to him. "Noah, please—"

He groaned. "Still alive… barely."

Zayn leaned against a tree, blood on his lip.

"Elena," he whispered. "We can't stay… more will come."

"What do we do?" she asked.

Zayn met her eyes.

"We survive. Together."

A distant howl echoed.

A signal.

They were being hunted.

4. The Lost Cellar

Noah pointed weakly. "There's… an old bunker… near the stream…"

Zayn lifted him without question. "Lead the way."

They ran—limping, exhausted, terrified—until they found a moss–covered door half-buried in the ground.

Zayn kicked it open.

Inside was darkness.

Cold. Damp.

Safe.

For now.

Zayn helped Noah down and shut the door.

Elena collapsed against the wall, chest heaving.

For a long moment, none of them spoke. Only the rain above and her heartbeat.

Finally, Zayn knelt in front of her, brushing wet strands from her face.

"Elena…" His voice cracked. "I need to know something. Right now. Tell me the truth—do you trust me?"

She looked into his eyes—dark, frantic, sincere. The man who saved her. The man who broke her. The man she was bound to.

"I don't know," she whispered.

Zayn closed his eyes, pained.

But Noah spoke first.

"You should."

Both turned to him.

Noah's voice was hoarse, but steady.

"Elena… Zayn didn't betray you. He didn't lie to you. He didn't use you."

Zayn stiffened. "Noah—"

"No," Noah said. "She needs to know. You deserve that much."

Elena swallowed. "Know what?"

Zayn looked away, jaw tense.

Noah continued.

"Elena… Zayn tried to warn you."

Her breath caught. "Warn me about what?"

"The contract. The bloodline. The alliance. All of it."

Zayn muttered, "Noah, stop."

"No." Noah's eyes darkened. "She thinks you're the villain. She thinks you married her for power. She thinks you trapped her."

Elena froze.

Zayn's shoulders slumped.

Noah looked directly at her.

"But the truth is… he married you to protect you."

Elena felt like her lungs collapsed.

Zayn's eyes were on the floor, guilt carved into every line of his face.

"No…" she whispered. "That can't be true—"

"It is," Noah said softly. "He married you because the Silver Ring wanted you first."

Zayn's voice was barely audible.

"I thought… if I married you… they'd stop."

Elena's heart shattered.

She had hated him for months.

And all along…

He was saving her.

Tears ran down her cheeks.

"Zayn…" she whispered.

He finally met her gaze.

"Elena… I'm sorry. For everything. For the hurt. For the secrets. For not being strong enough to tell you the truth."

Her lip trembled. "Why didn't you?"

"Because if you knew," he whispered, "they'd kill you."

Silence.

Heavy. Breaking. Healing.

Then—

A metallic clang hit the bunker door.

Elena jumped.

Zayn's face hardened. "They found us."

Noah stood despite his injuries.

Zayn pulled Elena behind him.

The door rattled again.

A voice echoed from outside.

"Elena Valverde.

Zayn Hale.

Noah Valverde."

A pause.

"Open the door… or we burn the forest."

Elena's blood froze.

Zayn whispered, "Elena… stay behind me. No matter what."

She grabbed his hand, voice breaking.

"Zayn… don't die."

He squeezed her fingers.

"I won't. Not today."

The door cracked.

Light spilled inside.
