Chapter 90 - Something That Feels Like Home

Morning came slowly.

Not because the sun refused to rise—

—but because the world itself felt hesitant to move forward.

The Guild Headquarters was quieter than usual, though not as suffocating as the night before. People still whispered. Still stared. Still kept their distance from Kuro.

But no one ran.

That was… progress.

Kuro stood by one of the tall windows, staring out at the sky.

It looked normal.

Blue. Clear. Peaceful.

Like nothing had ever happened.

Like something wasn't still waiting beyond it.

"…It's pretending," he murmured.

Mika, sitting on the edge of a nearby table, glanced at him."Or hiding."

Lucien, sprawled lazily across a chair, raised a hand."Or—and hear me out—it's gone and we can all relax and eat breakfast like normal people?"

Silence.

"…No?" Lucien sighed. "Worth a shot."

[If it were gone, I wouldn't feel like my existence is being watched by something older than time itself.]

Lucien froze.

"…Okay, I take it back. I don't like when the voice gets philosophical."

Mika exhaled slowly, pushing himself off the table.

"We're not waiting around," he said. "If that thing is connected to Kuro, then sitting here does nothing."

Kuro turned slightly. "So… what do we do?"

Mika met his eyes.

"We get answers."

Lucien sat up straighter. "From who? The creepy ghost guy who appears, drops life-changing information, and then disappears like it's a hobby?"

[Honestly, I respect the commitment to dramatic timing.]

Mika ignored them both.

"There's only one person who might know more."

Kuro blinked. "…The Guildmaster?"

Mika shook his head.

"No."

His voice lowered slightly.

"…the one who sent you here."

Everything went still.

Kuro's chest tightened.

"You mean…"

"The white space," Mika said. "That place you described before. The one outside everything."

Lucien frowned. "Hold on—are we seriously suggesting we go knock on the door of the guy who casually reincarnates people like it's nothing?"

[To be fair, he did say we wouldn't see that place again.]

A pause.

[…which means we're absolutely going to see it again.]

Kuro swallowed.

"I don't even know how I'd get back there…"

Mika stepped closer.

"…Then we force it."

Kuro's eyes widened. "Force it?!"

Lucien stood up instantly. "Okay—love the energy, hate the plan, slightly concerned for our survival—"

Mika didn't look away from Kuro.

"You said that place appeared when you died."

Kuro stiffened.

"…Yeah."

"And yesterday," Mika continued carefully, "you almost lost control when the gate reacted to you."

Kuro's fingers curled slightly.

"You think… it's connected?"

"I think," Mika said, "that whatever you are—whatever that fragment is—it's a key."

Silence.

Heavy.

Unavoidable.

Kuro looked down.

"…A key to what?"

No one answered.

Because no one knew.

[Oh I hate this. I really, really hate this.]

Lucien crossed his arms. "Okay, new rule. No more mysterious 'you're the key' statements unless someone explains what door we're opening."

Mika ignored him again.

He stepped even closer to Kuro.

Close enough that their shoulders almost touched.

"If it happens again," he said quietly, "I'll be there."

Kuro blinked. "Mika…"

"You won't face it alone."

Simple.

Firm.

Certain.

Kuro's chest tightened—but not from fear this time.

Something warmer.

Something steadier.

"…Okay," he whispered.

Lucien groaned loudly."Great. Fantastic. We're potentially triggering some unknown cosmic event on purpose. I love this group. Truly."

[You chose to stay.]

"I DIDN'T KNOW THIS WAS THE ALTERNATIVE."

Kuro let out a small laugh.

It surprised him.

After everything—

he could still laugh.

Mika noticed.

His expression softened, just slightly.

"…We'll start small," he said. "Training room."

Lucien blinked. "Training? That's the 'start small' part?!"

"Yes."

Mika grabbed his sword.

"If Kuro's power reacts to pressure, then we apply pressure."

Lucien stared at him.

"…You're terrifying."

[He really is.]

Mika glanced slightly to the side.

"…I know."

Lucien paused.

"…Wait—were you agreeing with me or the voice?"

"Yes."

"I hate it here."

The training room was empty.

Wide.

Reinforced.

Covered in old scars from battles long past.

Perfect.

Mika stepped into the center, drawing his blade in one smooth motion.

"Come here, Kuro."

Kuro hesitated for half a second—

then stepped forward.

Lucien immediately moved to the sidelines.

"Yes. Good. I will observe from a safe distance like a smart person."

[Translation: coward.]

"SELF-PRESERVATION."

Mika raised his sword slightly.

Not threatening.

But not gentle either.

"Kuro," he said, "don't hold back."

Kuro blinked.

"…I don't even know how to start."

"Then react."

Mika moved.

Fast.

Too fast.

Kuro barely saw it—only felt the sudden shift in air as the blade stopped inches from his shoulder.

His body reacted before his mind did.

A pulse of mana burst outward.

The floor cracked slightly beneath his feet.

Lucien yelped. "OKAY—THAT'S NOT NORMAL—"

[There it is.]

Mika didn't move the sword.

"…Again."

Kuro's breathing quickened.

"I—I don't know what I'm doing—"

"Good."

Mika's eyes sharpened.

"Neither does it."

The words hit something deep inside Kuro.

Something that answered.

The air shifted.

Cold.

Heavy.

Familiar.

Kuro's vision flickered—

just for a second—

white.

Endless.

A voice—

not Elvastia.

Not Mika.

Not Lucien.

"…closer…"

Kuro staggered.

Mika dropped his sword instantly, grabbing him.

"Kuro!"

Lucien ran forward. "Hey—HEY—don't pass out again, we just started—!"

Kuro's eyes snapped back to normal.

The feeling vanished.

Gone.

Like it had never been there.

Silence filled the room.

Kuro's hands trembled.

"…I saw it."

Mika's grip tightened.

"The white place?"

Kuro nodded weakly.

"…For a second."

Lucien blinked.

"…That's not good, right? That's definitely not good."

[We're getting closer.]

Kuro looked down at his hands.

"…It called me."

Mika went still.

"…What did it say?"

Kuro hesitated.

Then quietly—

"…'Closer.'"

Silence.

Heavy.

Unsettling.

Mika's jaw tightened.

Lucien slowly backed up again.

"…Yeah. No. I don't like that word anymore."

[Neither do I.]

Kuro swallowed.

His heart was still racing.

But underneath the fear—

there was something else.

Something quiet.

Something dangerous.

Something that didn't feel like fear at all.

…it felt like recognition.

And that scared him more than anything.
