"Tell me more about Jason. His past, his family, his likes... anything at all."
"Very well."
Ever since the Joker organization rose to power, Jason's past had been dug up and stripped bare by S.H.I.E.L.D. and other government agencies. Nearly every agent could recite his history by heart.
Due to his family situation, Jason's childhood was one of extreme poverty. He lacked food and clothing, suffered from malnutrition, and was frequently bullied by his peers. This harsh environment forged a rebellious streak in his teenage years. He began gathering followers to extort and beat his classmates; the total lack of parental guidance allowed him to drift further down that dark path.
By the time he reached young adulthood, his personality had turned extreme. No longer satisfied with the lunch money of students, he began robbing lone pedestrians with a chambered 9mm handgun. Eventually, he was sent to a juvenile detention center for robbery and assault.
Records from the detention center showed that Jason's personality underwent a massive shift during his incarceration. He stopped showing outward aggression and instead became polite and studious, frequently consulting the seniors inside on technical matters of the trade. No one expected that those two years would transform him from a targetless, idle thug into a legendary underworld enforcer.
After his release, Jason joined a small gang in New York. Using the knowledge he'd gained in detention, he rose to prominence rapidly, catching the eye of the Kingpin, Wilson Fisk. He became Fisk's right-hand man, only to eventually turn the tables, kill the Kingpin, and crown himself the King of the New York Underworld.
Jason was the talk of the town, and his legends were countless. The agent kept talking, and far from finding it tedious, Loki listened with rapt fascination.
"The Joker organization's security is impeccable, so I don't know much about what happened after that. But according to S.H.I.E.L.D. deductions, Jason is likely married and has children."
The conversation ended, and Loki leaned back, deep in thought.
This Jason was cunning and guarded; simple tricks wouldn't fool him. Coupled with that nearly invincible superpower, what was the angle?
Coercion?
Invoking his status as a Son of Odin might intimidate some, but only if they kept out of each other's way. Once his bottom line was touched, this man would lose all reason and descend into madness for revenge. Loki didn't want to risk being stuck on Earth forever.
Bribery?
The man was wealthier than most nations; common riches held no allure. The only things Loki possessed that might pique his interest were the Tesseract and the Scepter. The Cube was already with the doctor to open the portal, and the Scepter wasn't technically Loki's to give away—how would he explain that to his benefactors?
Loki asked, "After I took the Tesseract, what was Jason's reaction?"
The agent replied, "Shortly after we left, Jason arrived at the base. He killed every agent on the rescue team, though a few committed suicide. S.H.I.E.L.D. believes he managed to squeeze the information about the Tesseract out of them."
Loki smiled. "So he's interested in the Cube. Does he even know how to use it?"
The agent laughed too. S.H.I.E.L.D. had studied it for decades only to gain a sliver of understanding; the Joker thugs certainly wouldn't know its true purpose. In terms of combat, Jason could probably beat Loki with one hand tied behind his back. But in terms of knowledge? As the adopted son of the All-Father, Loki was leagues ahead.
To Loki, Jason was a mere primitive who likely didn't even know what the Tesseract was, let alone how to wield it. But that was human nature: the more mysterious something is, the more it draws their attention. Jason's possessiveness was a weakness.
Loki's eyes gleamed as a bold plan took shape. The risk was high; if it failed, the Chitauri would hunt him down. But if he didn't deal with the Jason problem, the invasion would fail anyway, and the Chitauri still wouldn't let him go.
Fine, a gamble it is! Even if I fail, I can just go home. I'm Odin's son; the old man won't watch me die.
"Is there a Core Member of the Joker organization nearby?" Loki's mind, full of schemes, had already mapped out the details.
"Yes. Right here in Houston!"
"Good. He's the one."
*
Loki donned a suit, masked his appearance with an illusion, and drove through the night toward Houston with the agent.
"The Core Member stationed here is John Wick," The agent briefed him. "Originally a professional hitman nicknamed the 'Boogeyman.' He met Jason in prison. His power is Freezing; he can turn a river to ice in an instant."
Loki's face twisted into a look of pure contempt. Freezing? I am a Son of the Frost Giants!
They arrived at a high-end nightclub in Houston. Even in the early hours of the morning, the place was packed. According to S.H.I.E.L.D., the silent partner behind this club was one of John Wick's subordinates.
"Gentlemen, weapons aren't allowed. Please put down the spear," Two burly men in black suits blocked the entrance.
Loki smiled. He suddenly raised his hand and pressed the tip of the scepter against the bouncer's chest.
"Shit!" The other bouncer reached for his gun but was instantly neutralized by the agent.
The scepter didn't pierce his heart; instead, a mysterious blue light flowed into his body. The bouncer lost his will instantly, becoming Loki's slave. He repeated the process with the second guard.
"Take me to your boss."
"This way, sir."
The bouncers led the way, and Loki and the agent walked into a private room on the top floor.
Knock, knock, knock.
"Fuck! Who is it?!" A voice roared from inside.
"Boss, two gentlemen are here to see you."
"Who are they?"
"People from... above."
Above was code for the Joker organization. The room went silent. Moments later, the door opened, and a disheveled, sultry bombshell walked out, carrying her high heels.
"Hi~" She winked, her red lips pouting at Loki.
Low-born woman. Loki's expression remained cold and unmoved.
"Enter, sir."
The bouncers stood guard outside. Loki and the agent stepped into the room.
"Welcome, welcome! Do you have a special mission from HQ for me?" The owner, thinking he'd finally been noticed by the higher-ups, stood up respectfully to greet them.
Loki didn't waste time. He raised the scepter and enslaved the man on the spot. "Where is John Wick?" He asked bluntly.
"He's resting at his safehouse. He leaves for New York tomorrow," The owner replied, his posture shifting to one of absolute subservience.
"Why is he going back to New York?"
"I'm not sure. Orders from the top. Supposedly because something big happened recently, and the Leader has recalled all Core Members to the city," The owner explained.
Loki and the agent exchanged a glance. Recalling every Core Member to New York? It seemed Jason really was gunning for the Tesseract.
"Find a way to arrange a private meeting between me and John Wick. Immediately."
"Understood!"
