Chapter 125: Tales of Dungeons & Dragons
The blessing allowed the Avengers to travel between parallel universes, seeking trustworthy allies and powerful artifacts from various realities.
If they could truly form a Multiverse Avengers Alliance, fighting the Annihilation Swarm and the Cancerverse should become manageable.
The Avengers discussed their plan with renewed hope. They divided up assignments, with different members travelling to various parallel universes to find companions and artefacts.
Raven watched for a moment, then turned his attention to other universes. In the Super God Universe, the Void threat was growing while Han Sen and others prepared for war.
These universes were stable for now. Raven shifted focus to finding the next new universe to visit.
The Mist Space
"The Elden Ring Universe! The fire source that sustains world existence and the Erdtree that can reshape reality. Mastering those laws would benefit the Psionic Academy."
"The Punishing: Gray Raven Universe has Zero-Point Energy technology, advanced mech systems, and even timeline jumping capabilities."
"Genshin Impact Universe can give ascension principles and Star Rail technology for analysis."
"Transformers Universe has the fire source, living metal constructs, and transformation technology."
Raven reviewed the detected universes while making his selections with careful consideration.
"Wait, that's not right. The Empire has plenty of physical technology reserves, but we're lacking in psionics. I need to focus on that."
The Empire's physical technology reserves were already extensive. It would take years to digest everything they'd collected into the Imperium fully.
Psychic had become the Empire's greatest weakness, a gap that needed to be filled.
Raven changed his approach. "Psychics are similar to magic and cultivation by other names. Let me find which universe has the best supernatural technology to copy."
"Star Wars Universe? Jedi cultivation methods are not inherently bad, but they're flawed. They're already using Psychic, so why are they still doing close combat? But the technology is salivating, especially that Forge thing, hmm. Backup for the future."
"Saint Ruins Universe? Their methods have contamination issues. The Chaos Gods are headache enough. If a few more nasty things show up, that'll be even more pain in the ass. Pass."
"Battle Through the Heavens Universe - the Great Thousand World cultivation methods are decent, but . Backup option."
"Warcraft Universe has magic and technology coexisting peacefully. Another backup."
"Dungeons & Dragons Universe." Raven's eyes widened, lighting up like he'd discovered buried treasure.
"This universe is oddly perfect. The Weave should solve our Subspace corruption problem entirely."
The Weave could filter chaotic raw magical energy, allowing users to cast magic and manipulate natural laws without risk. It came in two forms: natural, the world's own inherent rules, and artificial, usually created by a goddess of magic that covered the entire world.
Establishing the Weave would create a protective barrier between humans and Subspace. Subspace couldn't easily corrupt humans through such a filter. And any unauthorised Psyker could not abuse his power.
The Empire could use the Weave to control how much power each psyker could wield, minimising crises from out-of-control psionics.
"Well, time to get everyone on board, and we also need new party members. Ha-ha-ha"
Terra - Grand Regent's Office
After deciding on the target universe, Raven left the Mist Space and travelled to Terra at full speed; anyone would see his excitement clearly.
Malcador was still reviewing government documents at his desk, quill scratching across parchment in the lamplight.
"Old Malcador!" Raven jumped out and shouted with typical dramatic flair.
Malcador reflexively reached for his staff, then relaxed when he saw who it was. "Mr. Raven, you shouldn't appear like that. It's too startling for an old man."
"Sorry about that." Raven shook his head with mock contrition. "I came to ask if you'd go to another universe with me, but now that I think about it, forget it. I'm leaving."
"No!" Malcador said quickly, panic creeping into his voice. "It's my fault, Mr. Raven. I've already ordered different flavours of fries to be prepared for when you return."
"Ha-ha, just joking, just joking, you have the best attitude in Imperium." Raven chuckled with obvious satisfaction. "Let's go then. I'll send you through first, then go back to get Big Guy and the others."
Before Malcador could reply, Raven transformed into streaks of light, outlining a spacetime tunnel with casual divine power.
The spacetime tunnel entrance swirled with strange energies, colourful power spiralled at the centre, shifting endlessly like a cosmic kaleidoscope. The rim blazed with white light mixed with subtle thunder that spoke of vast distances.
Malcador couldn't hide his excitement. He wanted to step through immediately, to travel to other universes with the Emperor, Raven, and the Primarchs.
But reason suppressed his impulse. Even if he only left for a day, he had to arrange proper administrative coverage for the Imperium.
"Wait a moment. I need to handle some urgent matters."
Malcador hurried to his workstation's recording device and left a message stating he had urgent business to attend to and not to worry about his absence.
He used powerful psionics to send mental notes and consciousness symbols to high-ranking officials and members of secret organisations. The imprinted messages flew from his mind as streaks of golden light, circling him before scattering in all directions to find their recipients across Terra.
The work was hasty and somewhat chaotic, but he had no time for systematic, precise, polite communications. Everything poured from his mind like discharged data.
After confirming he'd given all necessary instructions, Malcador straightened his robes and gripped his staff firmly. He stepped into the dazzling spacetime tunnel without hesitation.
The tunnel contracted instantly and vanished completely. A black feather drifted down, transforming into light specks before disappearing entirely.
The Emperor's Laboratory
Raven crossed thousands of light-years in an instant, appearing in the Emperor's laboratory like a small meteor.
"Raven has arrived! Everyone move aside!"
He landed on the table, shouting with characteristic drama. The first thing he noticed was a plate of leftover fries cooling. He picked one up and tasted it with careful consideration.
"Cold. The texture's not good anymore."
Valdor approached, but before he could greet Raven properly, the bird turned to him with obvious purpose.
"Big Corn Cob, go call Perturabo, Mortarion, and Lorgar."
Valdor was stunned for a moment, then nodded automatically. "Understood."
Arguing was one thing, but Raven's position as one of the Empire's supreme rulers couldn't be forgotten or challenged. Valdor left the laboratory to find the three Primarchs.
Raven turned back to the cold fries, debating whether to take another bite or demand fresh ones.
The Emperor's voice interrupted his culinary experience. "Why are you so eager to summon those three? What do you need them for?"
Raven looked up to see the Emperor finishing his latest experiment, removing gloves and washing chemical residue from his hands with methodical care.
"After we returned from the Ultraman Universe, we've stayed put for quite a while. It's time to continue our travels across realities."
"I've selected a new universe where we can acquire the psionics technology the Empire desperately needs. I even went back to Terra and brought old Malcador along."
Raven handed the Emperor a mental imprint containing D&D Universe information through their psychic link.
The Emperor read through it with divine speed, learning that D&D was a magic-focused universe offering psionics suitable for ordinary people and Weave technology for organising Subspace safely.
He nodded with satisfaction. Raven's choices never disappointed him.
"I promised Malcador he'd come on this trip," Raven continued. "We also need to bring Perturabo, Mortarion, and Lorgar."
"They just returned to the Empire. Even though they don't have Gene Engines implanted yet, they need to understand how future wars will be fought."
The three Primarchs had not yet received compatible Gene Engines. Perturabo and Mortarion Gene Engines had been manufactured in the Martian forges, but the Emperor hadn't found time for the complex surgeries.
Lorgar had just returned from Colchis - his genetic data wasn't even fully compiled, so his Gene Engine hadn't begun production.
"As you say. Bring them all along." The Emperor nodded his agreement.
Soon, everyone gathered in the Laboratory.
Valdor brought the three Primarchs to the laboratory within the hour. Seeing the Emperor and Raven approach, they bowed respectfully to their Imperial rulers.
"Father, why did you summon us?" Lorgar asked with genuine curiosity.
"Knowing you still harbour illusions about gods and such things," Raven spoke before the Emperor could answer, "I plan to show you the wider multiverse so you don't get tricked by charlatans like a naive child."
Lorgar's obsession with whether gods existed in this universe ran dangerously deep.
In the original timeline without Raven's existence, the Emperor had talked with Lorgar all night when he first returned. But Lorgar remained stubborn, insisting on religious expansion and building the Perfect City during the Great Crusade.
After being disciplined by the Emperor's harsh orders, he became resentful and bitter. Under the influence of Kor Phaeron and Erebus, he went on a pilgrimage to the Eye of Terror and joined the Chaos Gods.
Last time, Raven had dealt Lorgar a devastating blow, shattering what he'd always held sacred in his heart through cold logic and superior knowledge.
"You speak of visiting other universes?" Perturabo asked, his analytical mind immediately grasping the implications.
"Indeed, Iron Lord," Raven replied. "Time to expand your understanding of what lies beyond this reality."
Mortarion remained silent, but his pale eyes showed keen interest in the prospect of such power.
The Emperor gestured toward the laboratory's teleportation array. "We depart immediately."
