Chapter 19 - EXILE

At home

I buried my face in my hands. Let out a muffled scream. Warmth spread through my belly. A strange sensation. My finger brushed my mouth. What was I doing? Why… why did I want to feel? Suddenly, I wanted to do things I would never do, like hum. Why did I want to hum? I had not known it was possible to feel something like this without Pefentanil.

I shook my head, trying to ignore the whirlwind of emotions. I was finishing preparing my bath when an official GMC notice beeped on the bioscreen:

Global Medical Committee

Official Notice No. 23.47-5/2341-SO

London, 01/03/2878

Subject: Proscription

To all members of the medical community.

By collective decision, the Committee has resolved to exile Riki Akiyama, registered with the Tokyo Regional Medical Council under number 345245-TO, revoking his right to perform medical duties.

Effective today, his presence within official medical institutions is prohibited. The involvement of other members of this distinguished community in activities involving the proscribed member shall also result in exile, pursuant to the provisions of the International Convention on Medicine and the Rules of the Global Medical Committee.

There being nothing further to communicate, all members must comply with this notice.

Respectfully,

Hideaki Katayama

President of the Global Medical Committee

My face went cold. I reread the notice several times, as though the words might change.

'The Committee has resolved to exile Riki.' She had really done it. Hideaki had exiled him.

I stepped into the bathtub. Let the warm water envelop me, as though it could erase everything. As though I could disappear with the steam. The warmth soothed the uterine contractions as they came and went.

I tried to digest it all. Exile from a professional community meant losing everything. He would be barred from entering official premises. Forbidden from accessing the upper levels of other societies. They could not even offer him employment unless he sought another occupation. Something that would take a decade.

Riki had received the harshest punishment.

No.

He deserved it. I had to admit it. What he had proposed… beyond that research, so many others he had conducted in the past.

I shook my head and focused on what mattered:

My meeting with Maia.
