Chapter 8 - Zach's trauma

Days passed, and I was contacted by families and corporations who didn't want to get their hands dirty.

I worked as a plumber in an old estate, as a therapist for a middle class family to their only daughter about intimacy before 18. I also worked for an old man to repair his favorite wooden cabinet, sassy old man, but at least I got 20 kronen off of it.

To summarize the week, I made over 200 kronen. It's a lot for some people, and I consider myself lucky to have made this much, but that's not where I want to be.

I sat on the couch fiddling with my pocket watch when I heard a knock on the door.

I approached and touched the door knob, it was a man wearing a formal suit with shiny back hair.

"Good afternoon Mr.. Zachariah" he glanced at me .

"So it's that time.."

It took me quite some time to get dressed as I stared at myself in the makeshift mirror.

A plain white shirt and a three piece suit, long dreads hung down my shoulders.

Overall, I looked presentable.

The chaffauer led me to the automobile, seeing this thing up close, it was even more beautiful from afar.

The chaffauer cranked the start engine and the vechle suddenly started vibrating, made me flinch.

"Frist time in a car?" The chaffeur asked, his eyes still fixed in on the road.

"Car..?"

"Ah yes, that what the nobles call it" The chaffeur answered.

The ride was uncomfortable at Frist, but after a while I got used to it. There I learned the name of the chaffeur. He was Charles. Charles was very professional, and the rest of the rip was smooth and quiet.

We arrived at Earl Harlinton street, a rich noble neighborhood where even their lawn is more expensive than my entire apartment. As a matter of fact just breathing here feels like l'm spending someones else's money.

I got out of the car and let out a breath stroking the collar of my suit.

*Zach why Is your hand sweating, they're just unusually rich people, not a different species..*

I took a deep breath.

With that reassurance I walked into the castle style mansion letting out a puff of air.

The Frist thing that greeted my sight was the massive chandelier dangling from the high ceiling, The walls and the floors were covered in quarts, four of those tile could probably buy my entire sofa set.

Opposite of the entrance was a triangle-shaped cut-out in the wall that revealed the inner ball room. Two massive staircases swirled and met and the peak of the triangle. That staircase lead to the second floor. There, you could get a view of all the entire ball room frm that angle.

The ball room began getting packed with visitors so I stood alone in the corner. My heart racing.

Noble gentleman were talking about investments and corporations sales, the nobles girls were talking about who they want to be their spouse among the nobles.

Completely different reasoning from me. My typical conversations were about comedy series and language theory, now that I think of it, I never had any friends during college.

My eyes were drawn to the condiments sprawled out on the table, sweets, biscuits, steaks and diced up cabbages the ones I was able to mention were the dishes I knew.

A bitter smile crept on my lips.

It's gatherings like these that remind me how lonely I am, and that's why I hate them so much.

*Shit.*

"Oh, mr Zach."

I turned...

Tears of joy almost flowed as I saw Mr Geralt walking towards me. Finally someone I knew.

"We are honored to have you here today he shook my hand."

"Ha..ha, I'm honored sir." I laughed awkwardly as he pulled me.

"What are you doing there come on up."

"Up.. where."

The path where the staircase connected was a flat corridor, and that's where the family of the celebrants usually reside, so the rest of the crowd could see them.

"Uh... I don't think that's a good idea sir."

"How are you going to protect her when you're so far away?" He raised a brow, teasing me.

"Having no choice, I had to follow him"

"Mr Geralt's insensitive, can't he notice I'm not particularly good with crowds."

I rubbed my temple

Now he wants me to be close to the center of it. Sigh... this is such a hassle.

I arrived above the starecase and Mr Geralt called his son mr lewert.

"Son this who I told you about. Mr Zachariah."

Lewert glanced at me, at first I thought I might've done something wrong, then he smiled.

"Welcome Mr Zachariah, I've been expecting you."

"So I guess he's okay with me?."

I internally shook my head.

"Why am I acting like being here is worng."

I glanced at my sweaty palms.

It was apparent, I had a phobia for large crowds.

"So what changed when I was at the beyfongs funeral"

I thought. The only difference was that I was wearing a mask, maybe that quelled my anxiety?.

I shook Mr lewerts hand.

He was middle aged man with sideburns, and had a scholary air around him.

The ball commenced, nobles danced on the ball, the ambiance of the chandelier cast a golden glow over the large hall filled with people flowing with the rhythm of the the instrumental.

Evening set in and the ball was at its peak, musical instruments played, and I finally got to see the birthday girl, Martha bethel, she had lush strawberry blonde hair and green eyes with soft facial features, making her look as enchanting as a witch, I'm surprised she's only 18.

Normally her beauty would draw men towards her, but in my case It drew me away. I've seen pretty women.

Miss beyfong, the white umbrella women at the beyfong mansion ruins, you see a pattern?, every pretty girl I've encountered are psychopaths.

I try not to judge a book by it's cover but right now, I have to be careful.

"Hello"

"Wha..." my voice trialed off as I noticed Martha lewert, Mr lewert daughter, geralts granddaughter and the birthday girl looking at my direction with a smile.

"I looked both ways and pointed to myself with a raised brow.

She nodded.

"I haven't seen you around here, who are you?"

*What the..*

"Cough.. uh umm, the bethels couldn't make it so I came in their stead"

I tried to sound professional, but I was afraid, all the trauma miss beyfong had given me finally began to show.

I promise you miss beyfong, when we meet again, I'll definitely make you regret ever meeting me.

I vowed in my heart.
