The rhythmic clang of Gorm's hammer from the Basic Forge, the distant thrum of the Basic Automated Wood Gatherer, and the murmur of Rootbound Town's burgeoning population usually formed a comforting symphony of progress. But lately, a discordant note had begun to creep in, a subtle undercurrent of unease that originated from the west.

Kael, the Titan Vanguard, returned from his morning reconnaissance, his stoic expression more grim than usual. He found Alex near the Advanced Barracks, overseeing a training drill for a new batch of Villager Militia.

"Alex," Kael began, his voice low, "the blight is spreading. Faster than before."

Alex's attention immediately sharpened. "The Corrupted Earth Elementals?"

Kael nodded, pulling up a holographic map from his System UI, projecting it onto the ground between them. The western edge of their shard, once a vibrant green, now showed an alarming spread of dull, sickly brown and grey. "My scouts, even the Whisperwind Scouts, are reporting significant changes. The corrupted zone has expanded by almost a third in the last few days. The soil itself is turning barren, and the flora… it's twisting into grotesque, aggressive forms. Even the common Gloomfangs and Rock-Beetles are being driven out, pushed east towards our territory."

Alex's Systemic Foresight, constantly processing ambient data, confirmed Kael's report. The subtle background radiation of corruption was indeed intensifying, its tendrils reaching closer to Rootbound Town's established borders. The implications were immediate and severe.

"Our Iron Ore mining post," Alex stated, his gaze fixed on a point on the map, a small beacon of industry nestled dangerously close to the expanding blight. "Is it under direct threat?"

"Not yet," Kael confirmed, "but the creatures driven from the corrupted lands are becoming more aggressive, more desperate. We've had increased skirmishes around the supply lines to the post. It's only a matter of time before the corruption itself reaches it, or a more powerful corrupted entity emerges."

The Iron Ore mining post was their lifeline for Refined Iron, the very foundation of their industrial growth. Losing it, or even having its operations severely hampered, would be a catastrophic setback for Rootbound Town.

"We need to fortify our western defenses, immediately," Alex declared, his strategic mind already racing through solutions. "Marcus is still focused on the Aetherium Refinery, but this is an existential threat to our supply lines. We need to allocate significant resources to this."

He called for Marcus, who arrived from his workshop, still looking weary from his Aetherium research, but his eyes snapping to attention as Kael presented the grim details of the spreading blight.

"The corruption," Marcus mused, his Structural Insight already analyzing the projected spread, "it seems to feed on ambient aether, twisting it. Standard fortifications might slow it, but we need something that can withstand sustained pressure, something that can actively deter."

"New traps," Alex decided. "And minor defensive structures. Something beyond our current basic palisade designs. Something that can withstand the corrosive touch of these elementals."

Marcus nodded, his engineering mind whirring. "We could integrate some of the Aethelgardian Crystal Clusters into the defensive structures. Elara's discovery of their harmonizing properties… if we can channel that, even passively, it might offer some resistance to the blight's spread, or at least disrupt the corrupted creatures."

Over the next few days, Rootbound Town shifted its focus. Construction teams, led by Laborers and supervised by Marcus, began reinforcing the western section of the Stone Walls. They integrated additional layers of Dense Iron-reinforced wood and stone, creating thicker, more resilient sections. New defensive structures, specifically designed to counter the Corrupted Earth Elementals, began to take shape.

One such design was the "Aether-Spike Trap (Uncommon)." These were larger, more robust versions of their basic traps, crafted from sharpened Dense Heartwood and tipped with smaller, unrefined Aethelgardian Crystal Shards. Marcus theorized that when triggered, the shards would emit a brief, localized burst of harmonizing aether, disorienting the corrupted creatures and making them vulnerable to follow-up attacks.

Alex ordered the immediate construction of ten Aether-Spike Traps, strategically placing them in choke points and along the most vulnerable sections of the western perimeter. The cost was significant, drawing heavily on their Aethelgardian Crystal Shard reserves, but the potential defensive advantage was immense.

Gorm, the Forgemaster, was tasked with forging specialized "Iron-Bound Barricades (Uncommon)." These were heavy, interlocking sections of Refined Iron and Dense Heartwood, designed to be deployed quickly to block breaches or funnel enemies. Their dense construction would offer superior resistance to the elemental attacks.

Alex ordered the creation of five Iron-Bound Barricades, further straining their precious Refined Iron supply. The clang of Gorm's hammer became even more relentless as he worked to meet the urgent demand.

Kael, meanwhile, increased the frequency and depth of his western patrols. His Titan Vanguards and the newly armed Villager Militia engaged the displaced wildlife, pushing them away from the mining post and back into the expanding blight. These skirmishes, though constant, provided a steady stream of EP, but the creatures themselves were often emaciated and yielded little in terms of valuable resources, reflecting the destructive nature of the corruption.

The western flank of Rootbound Town transformed into a bristling line of defense. The air grew heavy with the faint, unsettling scent of the encroaching blight, a stark contrast to the vibrant life within the town's walls. Alex knew this was just the beginning. The Corrupted Earth Elementals were not just a nuisance; they were a growing, organized threat, and the defense of their vital Iron Ore supply would be a continuous, resource-intensive battle. The blight's advance was a grim reminder that even in their burgeoning strength, Rootbound Town remained vulnerable, constantly tested by the untamed, dangerous forces of Aethelgard.
