Chapter 9 - Chapter 9 There he is, the detective

The case was solved after 40 years... by the detective of the new generation, the new Sherlock Holmes... Detective Bernard, De Vinci!

Detective Bernard is known above all for the case of a girl whose murderer had been unknown for 40 years.

(10 years later)

Bernard: "...hmmm... So... all the patients are dead. And the nurses?"

"Well... everyone who ate from it died... except one person. Her name is Alice Sunday..."

Bernard: "How strange... only one person survived, hmm?"

"Uh... she is... a patient... in a wheelchair, just 18 years old."

Bernard: "Can she be visited?"

"Well... she's still in a coma... She barely made it."

Bernard: "Report to me as soon as she wakes up."

"Yes, sir."

He left the room.

Bernard: "hmmm... A survivor...? How strange... coincidence?... fate... Either she was lucky... or it was fate... But... it could also be... that she had something to do with it..."

Dark hair, red eyes... a large wound on the shoulder.

Bernard: "...but she's in a wheelchair... how can that be?... hmmm... (grins). Looks like I finally have a sensational case. I need to refresh my strength."

(He set off for the city)

Bernard: "Hehehe."

To a club... a club of desires, full of women.

Bernard: "I want the youngest one... the girls who like to have fun at night?"

"Th-the... the youngest is 18..."

Bernard: "That makes it even better."

(Meanwhile)

(thump... thump... thump... thump... thump... thump!)

Ms. Sunday: "Gaaaaaahhhh... hahhhh..."

She woke up.

Ms. Sunday: "Hahhhh... How long have you been here?"

Lia: "For about an hour."

Ms. Sunday: "Amazing... you managed to take on the nurse's role. Just now..."

Lia: "Hmph... I knew you were awake. I don't like the outfit, so I took it off and put this on."

Ms. Sunday: "ugh... the poison was probably too strong... Did everyone die?"

Lia: "Not everyone. Those who didn't drink are still alive."

Ms. Sunday: "They're not a problem... they'll be arrested anyway."

Lia: "Excuse me?"

Ms. Sunday: "...It's simple. (cough) (cough!) ... It will be judged as negligent homicide."

Lia: "You sound so sure."

Ms. Sunday: "Yes... Even if they talk to me... and question me... what proof could there be... that I had anything to do with it?"

Lia: "hmmm..."

Ms. Sunday: "You don't look very pleased about that."

Lia: "...I've... killed many people... I'm not that heartless."

Lia had some scratches on her cheeks and face, probably self-inflicted.

Ms. Sunday: "My dear... Lia, you're a good girl... You're only loyal to me; it isn't your fault... They should have checked the leaves, especially after you deliberately made them look slightly different from the other leaves."

Lia: "How do you know that?"

Ms. Sunday: "Because I figured as much."

Lia: "Aren't you angry with me?"

Ms. Sunday: "Come here, my dear."

She approached and placed a hand on her cheek.

Ms. Sunday: "You are a beautiful girl... You are on my side... And you are young as well... One day... you'll understand what I mean... You don't need to feel guilty..."

Lia: "....."

Ms. Sunday: "They would have done it too. Remember that. Humans are disgusting... Remember how people treated you..."

Lia: "...but..."

Ms. Sunday: "Remember... remember the cruelest things... that were done to you."

Lia: "But—"

She held her cheeks with both hands and drew her close, both eyes locked on each other.

Ms. Sunday: "Look at me... Remember... remember and tell me..."

Lia: "Ugh..."

(Memory)

Lia: "Stop it, Dad... Mom, help me."

"Shut up, I'm watching TV... Can't you do it quietly and finish quickly..."

Benoit: "Hehehe."

Lia: "Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!"

(Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh!)

Lia: "Gahhh... ... ..."

Lia recoiled and collapsed to the floor. Tears flowed; she held her face.

Lia: "S-stop... Dad... stop... Mom... help me... someone help me... help... Ghhh."

Ms. Sunday: "ugh... (What's going on with her... apparently her past is worse than I thought.)"

Lia: "hahhh... hahh..."

(Flickering memory)

Benoit: "Hehehe..."

(Flickering memory)

(Slap!)

The memories came one after another. Suddenly she felt warm hands on her cheeks.

Lia: "ugh."

Ms. Sunday: "Shhhh... see... that's it... that's people... that's humans..."

Lia: "Ugh..."

Ms. Sunday: "They will always hunt you... It's about bare survival!... Remember that at last... No one... absolutely no one... is ready to value your life enough... They will treat you even more cruelly than those... who hurt you."

Lia: "ugh..."

Ms. Sunday: "It seems... it was your parents."

Lia: "ugh."

Ms. Sunday: "They didn't want you... They loved you? Do you think anyone will protect you... if not even your parents did?"

Lia: "...but... but..."

Ms. Sunday: "...Do you think your parents were the only ones?... No... no... Look... how would others treat you... when even your parents... didn't protect you!"

Lia: "But..."

Ms. Sunday: "...Hehehe... it's all right... Because I will."

Warm hands everywhere... it became warm... as if a great warmth kept her safe from evil... She embraced Lia.

Ms. Sunday: "I will protect you..."

Lia: "...Mmm."

She calmed down.

Ms. Sunday: "Now... go... As soon as I need you... you must be ready... yes?"

Lia: "Yes."

(The next day)

Bernard: "ugh... hmmm."

After hours of drinking and women, he had apparently fallen asleep. Although he has a wife... and even children... such things don't seem to bother this man. Of course, he set off to work.

(knock, knock!)

Bernard: "Hmm, come in."

A woman opened the door... a police officer.

"Excuse me... I came to report that the girl has woken up."

Bernard: "I see."

He set off with a few police officers.

Nurse: "Excuse me, miss, but Detective Bernard would like to see you."

Ms. Sunday: "But why?"

Nurse: "Don't worry, he only wants to ask a few questions."

Ms. Sunday: "Okay."

Someone knocked on the door; she (the nurse) opened it.

Nurse: "Hello... Detective Bernard..."

Bernard: "Morning... hmm."

Ms. Sunday: "Hello, Mr. Detective, you wanted to see me?"

Bernard: "Yes... First... I'm glad you survived."

Ms. Sunday: "(You? He addressed me informally? Ah, I see... his eyes... the eyes of a man consumed by lust.) Thank you very much."

Bernard: "...So... did you notice anything strange?"

Ms. Sunday: "What do you mean... It was a completely normal breakfast, though... one nurse smelled strange."

Bernard: "Smelled strange?"

Bernard looked at her sternly. He apparently didn't believe her, yet Sunday remained calm.

Ms. Sunday: "Yes... But I don't know what it was."

Bernard: "...You survived... because you drank a lot of water... Why did you drink so much water on that particular day?"

Ms. Sunday: "(Huh?)"

Nurse: "Excuse me, sir... what is this supposed to be?"

Bernard: "Be quiet..."

Ms. Sunday: "I always drink a lot of water..."

"Ms. Alice Sonday—so that's your name, right?" asked a police officer.

Ms. Sunday: "Yes."

Bernard: "...Hmm..."

Ms. Sunday: "...You're scaring me... Please... why are you looking at me as if I were lying..."

She clung to the policewoman.

Ms. Sunday: "That's mean... I barely survived... What is this?"

"Well... uh..."

Bernard: "Hmmm."

Nurse: "That's enough... We don't want you treating our patients like criminals... Leave the hospital at once, Detective."

He stood up.

Bernard: "...Forgive me... And you as well... Alice Sunday. I have a daughter your age... I should have known how to treat a victim. Please forgive me... I won't bother you further..."

He left, and the officers left with him, following him.

Nurse: "Honestly... what's wrong with him."

Ms. Sunday: "(Tsk... He's smarter than I thought... That's not good... too dangerous... He has to go.)"

Nurse: "Are you all right, Alice?"

Ms. Sunday: "Oh yes... everything's fine..."

The nurse left the room after a few minutes. Alice was nervous and thought until night fell.

Lia: "You don't seem happy."

Said Lia, who had slipped in a few minutes earlier.

Ms. Sunday: "So you were here... You heard everything..."

Lia: "You do seem a bit nervous."

Ms. Sunday: "Yes... indeed."

Lia: "Hmm?"

Ms. Sunday: "...I want you to watch him..."

Lia: "How?"

Ms. Sunday: "...Watch him."

Lia: "...All right... I'll do my best."

Ms. Sunday: "Good, I'm counting on it."

(Meanwhile)

Bernard: "hmmm... Could it be?... No... What am I thinking... She's too small... weak and naive... But she could have... known something... that at least... is certain. Hehe (grins!)"

(One hour later)

Bernard: "(Gulp, gulp!)"

A woman sat next to him.

"Hehehe."

A somewhat older woman, about 20 years old. He didn't know someone was watching him.

Lia: "Hmm, how interesting."

Lia was observing him.

Lia: "Seems to be into women who are slutty... huh... I need more though... I have to know more about him... hmm... Maybe he'll take this woman with him."

Lia followed the two, dressed like an ordinary neighbor.

She followed and followed until they stopped, apparently at his house. They went inside, and Lia climbed up the balconies.

Lia: "hmmm..."

Detective Bernard lives far out.

Lia: "hmmm..."

She looked through the window.

Lia: "What is happening... here?"

"Urk... gahhh... gahhhh..."

Lia: "ugh..."

What she saw was different from expected... She saw him stab the woman in the neck with a large pointed rod.

Lia: "...Ugh..."

She hid quickly.

Lia: "What...! Are you kidding me?... The... detective... is himself... a murderer?"
