Mark stood on the porch with a mug of coffee, looking out at the beautiful, star-shaped metal tombstone resting in the manicured grass. The grief was heavy, but having set Lystren to rest in a respectful manner, and with Lyra safe, currently sleeping soundly in her bed upstairs with Snowball, the white wolf pup, who over the past couple of weeks had taken to being overly friendly to humans, curled up at the foot of her mattress.
Mark drank his coffee, savoring it as he knew it was time to get back to work. The colony couldn't pause to mourn forever, and its leader couldn't afford the luxury of prolonged paralysis. The wind turbines were fine for now, but he had already envisioned a future and stable power grid that would last for ages to come.
And although they already had a very good reactor being built based on the Shepherd's reactor, the fact that the system had claimed he had barely even scratched 43% of Fusion reactor technology unsettled him and ignited that same drive he once possessed when he had been studying under Anahrin.
An hour later, he was standing under the command canopy at the military compound, surrounding a holographic tactical table that projected a detailed blue map of the northern foothills along with Aurelia, Juan, Kenjiro, and the flickering, grizzled military avatar of Marcos, who had demanded to have a matrix of hard-light holographic projectors installed throughout the important areas of the colony.
"Now that we're all here, we're going to be shutting down any further expeditions into the tunnels," Mark stated as he placed his hands on the edge of the table. He then pointed directly at the glowing markers representing the excavation tunnels. "Those shafts are officially dead zones. Marcos, I want meter-thick blast doors printed. Aurelia, I want you to have them welded over the entrances. We don't know how deep that subterranean network actually goes, or what else could be hiding in there. So for the time being, I want those tunnels sealed shut so nothing wanders in, and more importantly, nothing wanders out."
"Understood, Sir," Aurelia nodded. "Everything should be done by noon."
"But we still need the lithium," Kenjiro pointed out. "Without it, the enrichment plant is just a giant, useless building. We can't jumpstart a fusion reactor without a steady supply of Helium-3, and we sure as hell can't pull that out of thin air."
"We'll get it," Marcos chimed in, taking a long drag from his simulated cigar. The holographic map shifted, panning a few kilometers east of the original, disastrous excavation site. "I have run a secondary pass on the geological telemetry from the scout drones. Initially, I calculated that deep-core boring into the mountain's bedrock would yield the highest and fastest concentration of ore. However, given the hazards buried in the mountain, I believe it is best to go for this secondary deposit."
The map highlighted a massive, relatively flat expanse of jungle at the very edge of the foothills, tucked into a wide basin where the tree line met the rocks.
"This would be an open-air strip mine," Marcos explained, zooming in on the topography. "It won't penetrate the mountain's core, meaning we completely bypass the risk of intersecting with any Strathari architecture. Simply peel back the topsoil and excavate downward under the open sky, and according to the scans, it holds a very large, highly concentrated deposit of raw lithium."
"I like the sound of 'open sky,'" Juan grunted, crossing his massive, scarred arms. "Out in an open quarry, we have clear lines of sight and can set up overlapping turret nests on the ridges and see anything coming from a mile away."
"Then I guess it's settled," Mark said, pushing off the table. "Since the maglev tracks are already damaged, just reroute them to the new coordinates instead of finishing their repair, and get the heavy machinery moved over."
As soon as the meeting ended, everything went into motion. It took over half a day of continuous printing and welding just to repair the existing line. From there, diverting the rails eastward took two full days. Meanwhile, the automated logging crawlers chewed a fresh, forty-meter-wide path through the jungle, followed closely by the civilian crews preparing the ground and sinking the deep foundation pillars required to support the heavy loads.
It wasn't until the morning of the fourth day that the open-air mining operation was finally in full swing. The atmosphere was entirely different from the tunnels as the three suns beat down on the expanding quarry. The loader mechs moved with heavy steps across the cleared earth, and the electric excavators ripped into the ground, their massive metal scoops hauling tons of dirt and rock out of the widening pit.
Sarah, the former ice-miner from Europa, stood on the edge of the quarry, wiping a thick layer of sweat and dust from her forehead. She had been elevated to the primary site foreman, directing the crews who were operating to break up the larger boulders.
"Keep those haulers moving!" she yelled over the deafening whines of the larger electric motors, waving a transport truck forward.
As the excavators dug deeper, peeling away the dark topsoil and hitting the rock layer beneath, things started to look incredibly strange.
"Hold up! Kill the engines!" Sarah called out, waving her arms frantically at one of the excavator operators. The machine ground to a halt, its metal scoop resting heavily in the dirt.
Sarah slid down the steep dirt embankment, her boots kicking up loose gravel, and walked over to the freshly exposed rock wall. She pulled a handheld geological scanner from her utility belt and ran its green light over the stone.
It wasn't the stubborn, uniform, grey basalt they had encountered in the mountain tunnels.
The rock face was a chaotic, swirling mess of colors and textures. Thick veins of glittering, silvery metal spider-webbed through the stone, interspersed with pockets of dense, dark ores that caught the harsh red sunlight.
"Mr. Shephard," Sarah said, tapping her comms piece with confusion. "You and Kenjiro might want to come down here and take a look at this."
Within ten minutes, Mark and Kenjiro arrived on the back of a quadcopter transport drone, stepping off into the swirling dust of the quarry. The mercenaries holding the perimeter gave Mark a quick salute, which he returned with a quick nod as he marched down into the pit.
Kenjiro immediately pulled out his own scanner and pressed it against the glittering rock wall.
The engineer let out a low, deeply impressed whistle. "Well, I'll be damned."
"What is it?" Mark asked, stepping closer to examine the strange, metallic veins. "Is it a new metal?"
"No, it's not that," Kenjiro said, his eyes glued to his scanner's holographic readout. "It's a metallic soup. The composition is wildly diverse, and almost impossibly so. I'm reading high-yield veins of raw titanium, dense pockets of palladium, raw platinum, and traces of complex, conductive alloys that absolutely should not naturally form together in these kinds of concentrations."
Marcos's voice crackled over their earpieces, the AI having silently patched into Kenjiro's scanner to read the data. "Fascinating. The geological distribution is incredibly erratic. It is highly probable that this entire area is the result of ancient Strathari terraforming engines, or perhaps a local high-yield resource seeding program that was left to fester and mix for hundreds of thousands of years. The soil is practically an unrefined armory."
Mark ran his gloved hand over the glittering rock, feeling the rough edges of raw titanium. This changed things dramatically since they were no longer just digging for reactor fuel anymore and had accidentally stumbled onto a treasure trove of the exact exotic metals required for advanced aerospace manufacturing and high-tier weaponry. If they were ever going to build a fleet, upgrade their armor, and punch their way off this planet, this quarry was the key.
"Well, I'll be damned. What are you all waiting for? Keep digging," Mark ordered as a genuine grin broke across his face. He turned to Sarah. "Sort the exotic metals into secondary haulers and send them back to the city storage yards. But keep your eyes on the prize. We still need that lithium first."
By late afternoon, the electric excavators broke through the chaotic, metallic crust and hit the motherlode. It was a sprawling, massive deposit of raw lithium ore, a pale and chalky expanse that stretched deep into the earth, practically begging to be mined.
The quarry erupted into a flurry of organized and motivated chaos. The loader mechs stepped in, their hydraulic arms whining as they scooped up tons of the raw lithium, pivoting effortlessly to dump the payload into the armored, weaponized maglev carriages waiting on the floating tracks above.
As soon as a carriage was full to the brim, the superconducting magnetic coils hummed to life, and the train shot back down the track toward the city, safely delivering the raw ore to the automated enrichment plant.
For the next week, the open-air mine became the loud, beating heart of the colony's expansion as those with experience worked in rotating shifts, energized by the open sky, the heavy protection, and the progress they were holding in their own hands.
But while the colony celebrated the extraction, Mark's was isolated in the confines of a heavily shielded laboratory that had been constructed adjacent to the enrichment plant.
For the longest time, Mark had thought the reactor aboard his ship was a masterpiece. It was a marvel of efficiency that completely dwarfed anything the IUC had ever built. But as he stared at the System's locked node for [Nuclear Fusion: Perfected Stabilization], stranded at a frustrating 43%, the humbling truth that his reactor was more of a brute-force sledgehammer than a masterpiece began to dawn on him.
The lithium was only half the equation since the automated chemical processors and centrifuges in the main plant could easily isolate and enrich the Lithium-6. But transmuting that volatile isotope into stable Helium-3 utilizing neutron bombardment was something Marcos refused to automate without Mark understanding the foundational physics.
Mark sat at a wide workbench in a room illuminated by the blue glow of holographic schematics. Anahrin had guided him, ensuring the ship functioned, but he had essentially allowed Mark to build a highly efficient, incredibly dangerous campfire with his final touches so that it wouldn't blow up. It worked, and it was powerful, but by the cosmic metrics the System operated on, it was like banging two rocks together.
"If I try to forge Helium-3 using the same brute-force magnetic confinement principles I used to build the ship's reactor, the isotope will fracture," Mark muttered, rubbing his temples furiously. "It won't transmute smoothly and just turn into highly radioactive slag."
"Your analysis is unfortunately correct," Marcos's voice echoed from a terminal in the corner. "The Shepherd's reactor relies on sheer, overwhelming magnetic pressure to maintain its fusion reaction. But creating perfectly stable Helium-3 inside the nanoprinter's molecular forge requires finesse, not force. You must achieve harmonic resonance and the magnetic fields must coax the atoms into alignment, not crush them into submission."
Mark groaned, leaning back in his chair as he closed his eyes, accessing the System interface in his mind. When he concentrated on the node, the System didn't give him blueprints, but rather fed him conceptual physics. It flooded his mind with the sensation of atomic binding energies, the flow of subatomic particles, and the theoretical architecture of harmonic magnetic containment.
This was far from Strathari knowledge. Mark recalled how, during a state of semi-consciousness, he'd heard Anahrin say that what he held within him was like a piece of the universe's origin. He had never been able to manipulate energy with this kind of flawless, reality-bending precision. If the System was really some relic of the universe's origin, then it was a piece of literal magic, and the conceptual physics it was dripping into Mark's brain were the underlying truths of creation itself.
It was like trying to drink from a firehose of cosmic knowledge. If he could master this localized forge, if he could figure out how to weave the magnetic fields perfectly to transmute the Lithium-6, he wouldn't just be understanding Strathari tech. He would possess the universal knowledge required to bridge the gap between his crude, human-amalgamation reactor and true, absolute fusion.
"Alright, let's run it again," Mark muttered, opening his eyes and standing up.
He walked over to the reinforced, blast-proof chamber in the center of the lab. Inside sat a scaled-down prototype of a nanoprinter, heavily modified with thick, superconducting magnetic coils.
Mark manually adjusted the output dials, tying the sequence into Marcos's monitoring software. "Dropping magnetic resonance by two percent. Increasing the neutron flux density to compensate. Marcos, stand by on the emergency kill switch."
"You don't need to remind me of that, but I advise you to step behind the blast shield," Marcos chimed.
Mark ignored him and stared through the thick, polarized glass of the chamber as he engaged the sequence.
A bright, blinding flash of violet light erupted inside the chamber, and the table shook violently as the magnetic containment field strained against the sudden surge of atomic energy. However, since the harmonic frequencies were off, the field was trying to crush the atoms again.
Crack!
A sharp and deafening snap echoed through the lab as the containment field collapsed. A wave of searing heat blasted through the polarized glass, forcing Mark to shield his face with his arms as the prototype printer melted into a puddle of glowing, white-hot slag. Warning sirens blared instantly as Marcos triggered the emergency venting procedures, sucking the toxic, superheated fumes out of the room.
"Well," Marcos said dryly over the alarms. "That was spectacular. You managed to invent a very expensive, highly radioactive toaster."
"I don't want to hear it, Marcos," Mark growled, coughing as the smoke cleared. He stared at the molten puddle as his frustration grew.
This became his life for the next three weeks. While the colony thrived and the maglev trains ran back and forth with product and the agricultural sector yielded its first real harvests, Mark locked himself in the lab. He lived on coffee and spicy noodles brought to him by Kenjiro, having forgotten one of Anahrin's rules: Rest.
He ran dozens of experiments with some resulting in minor explosions that singed the hair off his arms, while others resulted in silent failures where the lithium simply refused to transmute. He stopped relying entirely on the physics he knew, and even pushed past the complex mathematics Anahrin had left him, using the knowledge simply as a stepping stone to grasp the incomprehensible, divine hints the System was feeding him. He spent hours meditating on the conceptual knowledge, slowly bridging the gap between mortal engineering and the elegant, harmonic physics of the universe.
He remembered the quote he had thought of on the day of the revelation, the fact that the sword of your mind must be sharper than the spear in your hand. He couldn't just rely on the System to do it for him, and it wasn't like it was going to anyway.
Finally, on the twenty-fourth day of continuous experimentation, Mark stood before the seventh iteration of the bombardment forge. He had completely redesigned the magnetic containment coils, abandoning the human standard of circular loops for an interlocking, hexagonal matrix that mirrored the energy shields of the Strathari mechs. But the shape was just the vessel since the real breakthrough was the execution itself. He programmed the coils to pulse at a fluctuating harmonic frequency, which was a direct application of the universal physics the System had guided him toward.
"Marcos," Mark said, his voice dead-tired. "Initiate test sequence ninety-seven."
"Initiating," Marcos replied, his tone lacking its usual sarcasm.
The chamber hummed to life, and this time, there was no violent shaking or blinding flash of unstable violet light. Instead, the inside of the chamber was filled with a soft and steady, beautiful blue glow.
The enriched Lithium-6 was pumped into the center of the hexagonal magnetic matrix, and the neutron stream engaged, invisible to the naked eye but registering flawlessly on the diagnostic monitors.
"Containment field is stable," Marcos reported, a note of genuine awe entering his voice. "And a harmonic resonance has been achieved. The thermal output is holding at the optimal parameters, and... and transmutation is occurring. Isotope conversion is at ninety-nine point nine percent efficiency without structural degradation."
Mark pressed his hands against the polarized glass, watching as the glowing blue portal of the printer processed the materials. He had abandoned brute force for cosmic elegance, and from the extraction tube at the base of the unit, a steady hiss of pressurized gas was funneled into a waiting metallic cylinder, and the automated sealing mechanism clunked into place, locking the cylinder tight.
Mark disengaged the sequence and popped the seal on the blast chamber, walking in while ignoring the residual warmth in the air, and picked up the cylinder from the rack. It was heavy, dense, and humming with a faint, contained energy. The outside of the metal frosted over with sudden condensation.
After only days of trial and error, he had achieved something he wasn't even sure humanity would achieve for the next hundred, or thousand years. He had created perfectly stabilized Helium-3.
As Mark held the cold cylinder, feeling the weight of his own progress in his hands, he felt a subtle shift in his peripheral vision. He blinked, and the holographic interface of the System materialized in his mind's eye. Without him even navigating the menus, the [Technological Ascendancy] tab snapped open.
He watched as the node labeled [Nuclear Fusion: Perfected Stabilization], which had previously been at 43%, suddenly glowed with a blinding golden light. The progress bar beneath it began to rapidly tick upward as the System was registering the successful extraction, enrichment, and transmutation cycle. But more importantly, it recognized that Mark had solved the conceptual physics. Through mastering the harmonic resonance required to forge the fuel, he now possessed the exact knowledge necessary to retrofit and upgrade the Shepherd's crude reactor into an engine that operated on the universe's true laws.

The bar slowed and locked in at a solid 82% Researched. Mark let out a slow, shaky breath, staring at the number. The System really was a mentor, rewarding him for the practical, large-scale execution of the technology and the evolution of his own understanding toward universal perfection.
"Hey, Papa!"
Mark snapped out of his system interface and turned toward the sound. The massive doors of the laboratory were slowly rolling open, spilling the bright red light of the afternoon suns into the lab.
Lyra was standing right at the threshold, wearing a pair of oversized safety goggles pushed up onto her forehead, holding a small, tightly packed lunchbox. Looming directly behind her in the open air, acting as a massive, dark burgundy barricade, was Atlas.
Standing roughly nine feet tall at the shoulder, the patriarch of the wolf pack was practically the size of a transport truck. He physically couldn't have fit inside the lab even if he had wanted to. While the vast majority of the pack had decided to keep to the dense foliage of the eastern forest, vastly preferring the untamed wilderness over the loud metal city, Atlas had slowly made an exception.
As he watched over his healing mate, who had to undergo another surgery, he also watched his white pup, Snowball, thrive among the colonists and become so completely enamored with the humans, and specifically with this pure, innocent little girl. It was something that had softened the patriarch's hardened, wild edges, and Atlas had actually grown remarkably fond of Lyra. So fond, in fact, that he had recently taken it upon himself to personally supplement her armed human escorts, shadowing her every step whenever she ventured near the noisy, dangerous machinery of the outer sectors.
Right now, Atlas let out a low, rumbling huff, his ears flattening slightly against the high-pitched whine of the chemical processors across the street as his intelligent yellow eyes scanned the interior of the lab from the outside with mild irritation.
"Hey, Bug," Mark smiled. The exhaustion that had been crushing him for weeks seemed to evaporate at the sight of her, and he carefully set the cylinder of perfectly stabilized Helium-3 back onto the rack before walking over and scooping her up into his arms. He offered a quick nod of thanks to the two mercenaries, who fell back into a relaxed stance. "What are you doing all the way out here?"
"Sister Elara helped me make sandwiches," Lyra said proudly, holding up the lunchbox. "She said you were working really hard in your secret lab and probably forgot to eat lunch again."
"Sister Elara is a very smart woman," Mark chuckled, his stomach giving a timely, hollow rumble that made Lyra giggle. He kissed her cheek, smelling the fresh air of the colony on her clothes. "Thank you. Did you and Atlas have a good morning?"
"Mmhmm!" Lyra nodded enthusiastically. "We went to the pens and watched Ivory walk! She's getting really fast, Papa. The shiny metal plates on her back and hips make her look like a robot wolf."
"A robot wolf, huh?" Mark laughed, thinking of the S-Alloy prosthetic spinal column and pelvis Dr. Corven had integrated into the matriarch. He walked out of the laboratory with Lyra in his arms, nodding to Atlas, who immediately started walking beside them, his massive head easily level with Mark's chest. "That sounds pretty awesome."
"It is," Lyra agreed. She looked around the massive, humming machinery of the sector, staring at the towering processors and the distant glow of the printers, her blue eyes wide with curiosity. "Are we going to build more robot wolves here?"
"No, not exactly," Mark said, walking toward the bright, bustling streets of the city.
He looked around at what they had accomplished. He saw the towering walls standing strong against the jungle, the Peacekeepers manning the outlook towers, their weapons gleaming in the red sunlight, and he heard the distant, echoing roar of the maglev train shooting across the horizon, hauling another load of precious metal from the quarry to fuel their new era of industry.
He tightened his arms around his daughter, feeling the cold weight of the Helium-3 cylinder still lingering in his memory. It was the beginning of a promise of boundless energy and unstoppable progress.
"We're building something much bigger, Lyra," Mark said softly, his voice showing a hint of undeniable triumph.
Mark carried Lyra until they reached a quiet spot near the residential sector, the weight of the morning's exhaustion entirely lifted by the simple, innocent joy radiating from the little girl in his arms and the success he'd just achieved. The two Vanguard mercenaries trailed at a respectful distance, while Atlas padded silently right beside Mark.
For the next twenty minutes, Mark wasn't the Shepherd of Humanity, but just a father, eating slightly misshapen sandwiches with his daughter, listening to her chatter endlessly.
As Lyra offered the last crust of bread to Atlas, which the massive apex predator took with terrifying gentleness, his razor-sharp teeth barely brushing her small fingers, a sleek carbon-weave collar around the patriarch's thick neck chimed softly, followed by a low, rumbling huff from the beast's chest.
Over the past few weeks, Marcos had refined the cognitive-audio translation matrix. But no matter how advanced the algorithm got, the wolves' conceptual language was primal. It would never be fluent or eloquent since it was built on basic associations of pack, hunt, and survival.
[Loud place. Bad ears. Small safe,] The collar's synthesized voice translated in a choppy and blunt tone.
"I know, big guy," Mark said, reaching out to scratch the thick, coarse fur behind Atlas's ears, which the wolf had started to grow accustomed to. "Thanks for watching her back in there. I appreciate it."
Atlas leaned into the touch for a brief second before pulling back. His yellow eyes locked onto the lunchbox, and he let out a demanding huff.
[Pack protects. Give meat.]
Mark let out a genuine laugh, shaking his head as he pulled a small, vacuum-sealed pouch of synthesized jerky from his cargo pocket and tossed it to the wolf. Atlas caught it effortlessly out of the air, swallowing it whole in a single motion.
"Don't push your luck," Mark smirked, leaning his forearms on his knees. "You're already eating me out of house and home."
Atlas licked his chops, his tail giving a single, heavy thump against the ground.
[Meat good. Sleep.]
Mark smiled, watching the giant wolf rest his chin on his massive paws. But the universe, and the System that governed his new life, rarely allowed him to rest for long. Just as Atlas closed his eyes, a sharp, dual-toned chime echoed in Mark's earpiece.
Mark tapped his comms, a subconscious tension returning to his shoulders. "I'm here, Marcos. What's the situation?"
