Chapter 45 - Surfing

Morning came gently over Kauai, sunlight spilling through wide glass windows and carrying with it the distant sound of waves rolling onto shore.

Inside the hotel room, the calm didn't last long.

"Beach day!" Dee Dee's voice rang out from somewhere down the hall, followed by the unmistakable sound of hurried footsteps and something falling over.

Dexter sat on the edge of his bed, already dressed in a simple shirt and shorts, watching the chaos with a quiet sort of acceptance. Around him, the others were in various stages of preparation, bags being packed, towels folded or not, sunscreen being passed around like an afterthought.

Phineas, meanwhile, was already fully ready, adjusting the strap of a small bag slung over his shoulder. "You know, statistically speaking, today has a very high chance of being awesome."

Ferb nodded once. "Agreed."

Douglas zipped up his bag with a shrug. "As long as there's food."

"There will be food," Dexter said, standing and grabbing his own things. "Mom made sure of that."

It didn't take long before the entire group gathered downstairs, where a rented SUV waited for them. Harold took the driver's seat with enthusiasm, music playing softly as they pulled away from the hotel and headed toward the coastline.

The drive itself felt like part of the vacation.

Palm trees lined the roads, sunlight flickering through their leaves, the ocean occasionally appearing between openings like a promise waiting just ahead.

By the time they arrived, the beach was already alive.

Waves rolled in steady rhythm, people scattered across the sand, laughter and chatter blending with the sound of the sea. The air was warm but not overwhelming, a perfect balance that made everything feel… easy.

"Alright, everyone, unload!" Susan called out, already stepping out with a smile.

What followed was a coordinated mess.

Grills were set up, mats spread across the sand, beach chairs unfolded with varying degrees of success. Umbrellas were planted firmly into the ground, coolers opened, bags arranged. It took a bit, but eventually, their little corner of the beach began to take shape.

Once everything was settled, the six cousins exchanged looks.

"Swim time?" Phineas suggested.

"Obviously," Candace replied.

A short while later, they returned in their swimwear.

Candace and Dee Dee wasted no time, claiming their spots under the sun and settling into what they declared "important relaxation time."

The four boys, however, had other plans.

"Let's explore," Phineas said, already walking.

They moved along the shoreline, sand warm beneath their feet, until something caught their attention, a small shop near the edge of the beach, surfboards lined neatly outside, colorful and inviting.

"Now that," Phineas said, eyes lighting up, "looks interesting."

Inside and around the shop, tourists gathered, some carrying boards, others listening to instructions. A man stood nearby, talking casually to a girl around their age.

Beside her stood… something else.

Dexter slowed.

A small blue creature. Standing upright, large ears, wide eyes.

It looked like a dog but it wasn't a dog.

"…Stitch?" Dexter muttered under his breath.

The creature's ears twitched instantly and turned.

Then, without hesitation, it trotted straight toward him, stopping just a few steps away. One clawed finger lifted, pointing at itself.

"You know... me?"

Dexter blinked once.

"…Uh…" His eyes shifted quickly, scanning then landed on a ribbon tied loosely around Stitch's neck.

There... a name.

"Your name is on your ribbon tie," Dexter said smoothly, gesturing toward it.

Stitch looked down, then back up.

"…Oh."

Crisis avoided even though the tie was strange.

Before anything else could happen, Phineas stepped forward toward the man running the shop.

"Hi! How much for a surfboard?"

The man, tall, relaxed, sun-tanned grinned. "Rent's fifty dollars for the day. Lessons included."

Phineas didn't even hesitate. "We'll take four."

Douglas shrugged. "Guess we're doing this."

Dexter exhaled quietly… then followed along.

They picked their boards, each one slightly different in design and paid, adding the lesson session without much discussion.

"Name's David Kawena," the instructor said as he led them toward the water. "I'll get you started."

The waves weren't too aggressive which is perfect for beginners.

David explained the basics first, balance, stance, timing. Then one by one, he guided them into the water.

Phineas went first.

He wiped out almost immediately.

"…Okay! That's harder than it looks!" he laughed, resurfacing.

Ferb followed. To no one's surprise, he managed to stay up longer, riding a short wave before stepping off smoothly.

Dexter went next.

He approached it more cautiously, watching the wave, adjusting his stance as instructed. When it came, he pushed forward.

For a brief moment, he rode it then the balance tipped.

Splash.

He surfaced, pushing his hair back, a small grin forming despite himself.

"…Not bad."

Douglas came last, and while less graceful, he powered through with sheer determination, staying upright just long enough to call it a win.

Eventually, they returned to shore, boards resting in the sand as they took a break.

David stayed behind with Douglas, continuing to give pointers while the others sat back.

That's when they saw her again, the same girl from earlier.

She approached them casually, Stitch walking beside her like it was the most normal thing in the world.

She stopped a few feet away.

"Are you foreigners?"

Phineas tilted his head slightly. "Uh, yeah. Why do you ask?"

Meanwhile, Dexter's attention had drifted back to Stitch, who was now poking at the sand curiously. He crouched slightly, watching it with quiet fascination, though his ears stayed tuned to the conversation.

"Then do you need a tour guide?" the girl said. "I may look young, but I know all the twists and turns here."

She paused, then added, "Oh, my name's Lilo."

Phineas brightened instantly. "Nice to meet you! Do you know any interesting places around here? Like… hidden spots, myths, treasures anything like that?"

Lilo narrowed her eyes slightly. "Why are you looking for stuff like that?"

"He likes exploring," Dexter said, finally glancing up, cutting in before Phineas could spiral into a full explanation. "That's kind of his thing."

Lilo studied them for a moment.

Then her expression shifted, like she remembered something.

"Well… there is a story."

That got their attention.

"Old story," she continued, crouching slightly as if sharing a secret. "From the kupuna. About a place in the mountains."

"A shrine."

Dexter leaned forward.

"They say it belongs to a fire serpent," Lilo said. "Not just a story creature, something real and old. If you find it… it can give you the power of fire."

Phineas raised an eyebrow slightly. Dexter's gaze sharpened just a bit.

"But it's hidden," Lilo went on. "Not just physically. It's like… in another place too. You don't just walk into it. You have to feel it first."

"Feel it?" Phineas echoed.

"Yeah," she nodded. "A strange energy. When you feel it, it leads you there."

She straightened, shrugging. "But it's probably just a rumor."

There was a pause.

Phineas slowly turned his head toward Ferb then to Dexter.

A smile spread across his face.

"Ferb… Dex…" he said, excitement building, "I think I know what we're gonna do today."

Ferb nodded once.

Dexter didn't answer immediately, but the slight curve at the corner of his mouth said enough.
