Max POV
After hiring those I wanted, there wasn't much left to do, just a few pending matters and "saying goodbye" to some people. I would still come back to visit Eri and Izumi, for example, but I would start focusing more on my main universe.
I still wasn't sure if my universe was more based on the comics or the animation, both have their positive and negative points.
Even with my memory somewhat blurry, both from the comics and the animation, the comics had a more powerful Mark, who didn't get beaten as much, but they also brought in many characters from Image, and I wasn't very knowledgeable about the Image Comics universe. I knew the characters that appear in Invincible, but beyond that my knowledge was limited.
The animation, on the other hand, had stronger enemies. Mark doesn't get beaten as much not just because he's weak, but also because the enemies are stronger. Even the Guardians of the Globe were buffed enough to knock out Omni-Man, even though most of them, with the exception of Immortal, ended up dying at the end.
In compensation, there wouldn't be the Image characters, but perhaps there would be additional elements I didn't remember well. I didn't even know if the animation had already ended when I died in my original world. That was shit.
I was waiting for someone while thinking about this.
"Finally found you, why did I have to come all the way here? Everyone was looking at me strangely, like I was lost." La Brava had arrived in the room where I was, inside U.A.
"Well, it's because you're very small, so you draw attention for being a shortstack. Changing the subject, do you prefer to train your body or dedicate yourself fully to being 'the person in the chair'?" I said jokingly. Even in BNHA, where there are people of all colors, sizes, and shapes, Manami still drew attention for her short stature.
"…I prefer to be 'the person in the chair'. I don't get along very well with physical exercise." Manami said, somewhat unenthusiastic. I had even thought of methods to help her grow a little, the Water Polo Carbonated Fist required running 10km a day, plus all the other exercises Saitama did. With her little legs, that would be hell for someone who already didn't like exercising.
"Alright, then." From there, I explained my "Quirk" to Manami and copied hers. It wouldn't be very helpful, but I liked mysterious powers and finding a moment to use them.
After that, I took her to the room I had set up for her in the Sanctuary, full of technological equipment, an extremely powerful computer connected to a supercomputer and a database stored in another room of the Sanctuary, plus a king-size bed and private bathroom.
I had also already met with Gentle. Now Gentle, Twice, and Mr. Compress were living near each other, since they would be the main team. I had also given them copies of the Water Polo Carbonated Fist, the faces they made were priceless, and they asked if that would really help.
Himiko's house was near Izumi's, and I was going to introduce them.
.....
3rd Person POV
Izumi was waiting for her friend Max to train that morning. He had said he was going to introduce a friend who would also help with the training. Izumi, who had few friends, was nervous.
'Will she be nice like Max? Or grumpy like Kacchan?' She kept imagining possibilities in her head, it even looked like smoke was coming out of her from thinking so much.
"Deku-chan!! Over here!!" She heard a voice calling her.
It was Max, with a girl beside him. The girl had short blonde hair tied in two irregular ponytails, yellowish eyes that always seemed a little too big for the expression on her face, and wore a simple training outfit, black leggings and a loose t-shirt, the sleeves cut sloppily, as if she had done it herself with scissors without much care. There was something in her smile, full of teeth, that gave the impression of a vampire.
"Hello, Max! Hello…" She didn't have many social skills and forgot to ask the girl's name.
"Himiko! Himiko Toga! But you can call me Himiko!" Himiko replied, excited. She felt a connection with that girl, she didn't quite know why, but she felt close to her.
"H-hello, Himiko! I'm Izumi! Izumi Midoriya, my friends call me Deku!" She said excitedly, no longer bothered by the nickname since Max had started using it.
Then Deku and Himiko started an animated conversation while running. Max stayed a bit behind them, letting the conversation flow and commenting something from time to time. He was content to just let them get to know each other and, as a bonus, enjoying a privileged view.
After finishing the run, while resting before the 100 push-ups, 100 sit-ups, and 100 squats, Max spoke to Izumi.
"Deku-chan, I won't be able to train with you for a while." Max said, his tone more serious than usual. He had things to resolve in his own universe, things he couldn't explain properly, at least not yet.
"What?! Why?! Did something happen?" Izumi got worried, thinking for a second that the problem was her, even though it made no sense. She had never had the best self-esteem, so she lowered her head, a bit sad.
"Hahaha, it's not that." He placed his finger under her chin and lifted her face. "I would never get mad at you." He said, looking like a romance protagonist, making Izumi blush and freeze.
Himiko saw that and felt like joining in the fun. She hugged Izumi from behind and whispered in her ear.
"Don't worry, Deku-chan, he wouldn't leave a cutie like you alone for any random guy to come and take you away."
Izumi turned redder than ever, saying nonsensical things, trying to form a sentence.
"E-ewu… n-no, that's not it, I mean, he wouldn't… I wouldn't… aaah!" She squeezed her hands together, her eyes darting from side to side without being able to look at either of them, her mouth opening and closing several times without managing to say anything coherent.
'Ah~ it's so fun to tease her.' Both thought, smiling mischievously.
When she finally calmed down, Max explained that he would need to be away for a while. He said he had some pending matters to resolve, without going into details, but promised he would come back from time to time to train with her.
.....
Back at U.A., Max was strolling. He never got tired of the view of that place. He even thought about, in the future, doing something similar, only bigger, to have his own hero academy, My Own Hero Academia, perhaps. He laughed to himself at the silly idea.
He was walking in tactical gear. Nezu was making the preparations for All Might's partial healing, overseeing everything closely so nothing leaked. The heroes who worked at U.A. already knew about his situation, which helped a lot.
While admiring the landscape, Max felt someone poking him. He turned and saw a girl with pale skin, large blue eyes, and extremely long light blue hair that almost reached her legs, seeming to wrap around her waist on its own. She wore a vest over the U.A. uniform, which seemed slightly tight in the bust area, highlighting the more mature curves that the two extra years of age had brought her.
"Nee~ nee~ why are you wearing that outfit? Aren't you a student? And why tactical gear? Do you use support devices hidden to help your Quirk? Also, what is your Quirk? I can't guess, is it more support or attack?" She was excited, firing off a torrent of questions, her eyes shining with genuine curiosity, without any trace of malice or second intentions, as if each question was the most interesting thing in the world.
"I'm not a student, I'm kind of a teacher. I don't wear the outfit because of support devices, I just wear it because it's comfortable for me. And my Quirk is quite versatile, it allows me to copy other Quirks." Max said calmly. He knew who she was and how she acted, so he saw no problem speaking frankly.
"Wow, copying Quirks… wait! Teacher?! But you look so young! I wanted to be a teacher too! How do I become a teacher?" She asked with wide eyes, as if that were genuinely the first time she had considered that career possibility.
"Well… actually, as I said, I'm 'kind of' a teacher. It's because my Quirk is very versatile and I'm very smart, so Nezu gave me a position, but it's kind of a temporary position." He paused, thinking about how to summarize it without going into too many details. "I made a kind of deal with him, I trade some of my technology for a space here at U.A. So, sorry, but I think you'll have to follow the normal path, like everyone else."
"Aw, I wanted to be one, what a shame." She made a quick pout that disappeared almost as fast as it appeared. "So, what's your name? I'm Nejire Hado, from Class 2-A! You can copy Quirks then? Can you copy mine? I wanted to see what it's like, and see someone using my power too, it would be so cooool!"
Max chuckled. He had already expected something like this, but her enthusiasm was on another level. It would be hard to find someone so excited in many other universes he would visit.
"Nice to meet you, Nejire-chan. My name is Maximus Alexander Ferrari Ferreira, but you can call me Max." He used the full name this time just because he thought it would be funny.
"Cool, it's very Greek, right? Nee nee, copy my Quirk, I want to see, come on, come on!" Nejire started pulling Max's arm, with a face that wouldn't accept no for an answer.
"Alright, don't worry, I'll do it for you." Max said, playfully, while placing his hand on her head, copying her Quirk.
'That one was pretty easy. Knowing the characters in advance is a big help.'
Max had already perfected his own copying method. Nejire felt a slight tingling throughout her body, but it wasn't a bad sensation, it was more like soft tickles rising from the nape of her neck to the tips of her fingers, like a warm heat spreading under the skin.
"Oh~ the sensation is nice!" She said, surprised, touching her own arm as if she could see the tingling there.
Max removed his hand from her head.
"Done. Now, what is your Quirk, so I can use it?" He asked, as if he didn't already know.
"My Quirk is called Wave Motion, it allows me to convert my vitality into pure energy and release that energy in the form of shockwaves, pretty cool, right?!" Nejire explained animatedly, adding a few more details about her power.
'I was already planning to copy her Quirk, but she ended up offering it herself. Life is good.'
Energy projection is one of the most versatile types of power that exist among the universes he knew, capable of going from simple blasts to planetary-scale destruction, depending on who controlled it.
With that, Max began circulating the energy in the form of waves through his feet and started floating.
"WAH! Cool! Now shoot with your hands!" Nejire was extremely excited, seeing her own power being used by someone.
'This way of flying is much better than using Lucius's telekinesis.'
"Okay, here it goes." Max circulated the energy through his arm.
He began to accumulate more and more energy. A sharp, growing hum filled the air around him, signaling the accumulation of that purified energy, extracted from his own vitality. Nejire was already impressed by the amount accumulated, she could never fire that much at once without feeling exhausted afterward.
"Here it goes!" Aiming at the sky, Max fired all the accumulated energy.
A fluid, oscillating sound cut through the air, a "shhhhhwuuu-wuuu-wuuu" electric and resonant, like strong wind being forced through a high-tech turbine, only amplified many times beyond what Nejire had ever managed to produce. The energy shot toward the sky, opening a momentary gap between the clouds and raising a strong gust of wind strong enough to shake the branches of nearby trees.
"Wow! Cool! Nee~ nee~ come with me, copy my friends' Quirks too!" Excited, without waiting for Max to steady himself properly on the ground, she linked her arm with his and started pulling him toward the training field, where her friends were.
When they arrived, they saw the rest of the Big Three scattered across the training field. Tamaki was a bit away from the others, avoiding eye contact with anything moving too fast nearby, while Mirio ran in circles, apparently training speed, shirtless and showing no signs of fatigue.
"Hey, look who's here!" Mirio was the first to notice, stopping his run with a wide smile. "Nejire, who's your friend?"
"Guys! Look what I found! He's a 'teacher' who can copy Quirks! He even makes them more powerful!"
"Wow! Really?! I'm Mirio Togata, nice to meet you! And that guy over there is Tamaki Amajiki." He pointed to his classmate, who now had his head down, leaning against the wall.
"Nice to meet you all, I'm Maximus Alexander Ferrari Ferreira, but you can call me Max." This time, Max made a more formal introduction, bowing slightly in a cordial manner.
"Big name, buddy! And foreign too! So, how does this Quirk copying thing work?!" Mirio was already with that sparkle in his eyes of someone who couldn't stay still in front of something new, he couldn't wait to see it happening in practice.
Max then used Nejire's Quirk to fly, leaving Mirio impressed and extremely excited. This even caught Tamaki's attention, who had finally moved away from the wall enough to observe properly, his eyes fixed on the spot where Max had disappeared, clearly interested, but without saying anything.
"Cool! Try mine! Its name is Permeation, it lets my body become completely or partially intangible, so I can pass through solid matter!" Mirio was practically vibrating with anticipation, almost jumping in place. It was rare for someone else to be able to use his Quirk, and the idea of seeing his own power in someone else's hands seemed to excite him as much as a child about to get a new toy.
Max took Mirio's hand and began to "copy" his Quirk, keeping the act for a few seconds before letting go.
Mirio and Nejire waited anxiously to see how he would use the power.
Then, suddenly, Max seemed to be swallowed by the ground.
"Damn! How did he manage to do that with his clothes too?!" Mirio practically shouted, with a genuine note of indignation in his voice. He always ended up completely naked when using his own Quirk, something he had already gotten used to, but that still bothered him whenever he wasn't near his hero costume to change into afterward.
"Ah, so that's how it works for him…" Nejire murmured, more curious than impressed, already thinking about how that compared to her own Quirk.
Tamaki, from his corner, had finally moved away from the wall enough to observe for real, his eyes fixed on the spot where Max had disappeared, clearly interested, but without saying anything.
A few seconds later, Max was launched back to the surface. He did two somersaults in the air before landing almost theatrically, one knee on the ground and the other raised, arms open as if expecting applause from an Olympic jury.
"*Applause* *Applause* *A Whistle* *More Applause*"
Mirio and Nejire became his personal audience, clapping as if he had just finished an Olympic gymnastics performance. Mirio even made a point of shouting "Ten points!", while Nejire simply vibrated in place, unable to stay still.
"Man, dude! How do you manage to use Permeation without your clothes passing through you? Can you teach me?" Mirio had already been training with Sir Nighteye to try to predict where he would reappear after passing through something, since without control over that, he risked violently hitting a wall or another solid obstacle after being ejected from the ground. Learning to better control his own intangibility, including the clothes, would be a huge step forward for him.
"I managed it because I have my own biostatic field, so, in a way, I included my clothes inside that field too. But unfortunately I can't teach you right now, maybe in the future I'll be able to." Max replied frankly. He had managed it because he was full of energy, but even knowing that every living being possessed a potential biostatic field, he had no idea how to teach someone to awaken and control their own. That would take time, study, and probably several tests he hadn't done yet.
"Aw, what a shame." Mirio made an exaggerated pout, almost comical, before smiling again. "But when you manage to teach it, promise you'll teach me first?"
"Hahaha, don't worry. As soon as I figure out a way to transmit this technique, I'll teach you." Max said, accepting the challenge. Even if his teacher position was just a placeholder, he didn't intend to take that commitment lightly.
"Nee~ nee~ I want to learn too! Teach me too!" Nejire asked excitedly, already getting closer to Max, as if physical proximity could speed up the learning process.
"Alright, don't worry, I'll teach you too, Nejire-chan." Max then stopped and looked from afar at Tamaki, who was still near the wall. "If you want to learn too, Tamaki, just say when the time comes!"
Tamaki just leaned his head against the wall again and waved, still without lifting it from there.
Max, Nejire, and Mirio continued talking for a good while, until Max felt something grabbing his legs and heard a thin, excited little voice.
"Max-oniichan! Professor Aizawa said that Director Nezu wants to see you!"
It was Eri, her little arms wrapped around his legs, smiling in that way that always seemed half shy and half proud at the same time, as if delivering the message was the most important mission of the day.
"Kyaaaa! So cute!" Nejire couldn't resist and picked Eri up. The girl was a bit confused by the quick movement, but soon seemed to forget the scare, impressed that the one who had picked her up was such a pretty onee-chan.
"Pretty onee-chan, what's your name?" Eri asked, curious, tilting her head slightly, her big eyes fixed on Nejire's face.
"Awn, you can call me Nejire-oneechan, okay? And what's your name, cutie?" Nejire had already started lightly pinching Eri's cheeks, enchanted.
"My name is Eri!" She said, all excited, clapping her small hands.
The two engaged in an animated conversation and didn't seem willing to stop anytime soon. Seeing that, Mirio and Tamaki went back to what they were doing before.
In practice, it wasn't really a conversation, it was more Nejire showering Eri with affection and asking excited questions without pausing to wait for answers, while the girl just laughed and tried to keep up with the rhythm.
It seemed like the two wouldn't let go of each other anytime soon, so Max made a decision.
"Can you keep an eye on Eri for me? I need to talk to Director Nezu."
"Sure, leave this cutie to me." He didn't even need to ask, really, Nejire had already decided to spoil Eri the moment she saw her.
"Alright, then." Max placed his hand on Eri's head and said goodbye.
"Be a good girl, Eri-chan, don't cause any trouble for them. Then, when I come back, I'll give you a present, okay?" He said, stroking her head.
"Yes! Max-oniichan, I promise I'll behave."
With that, Max nodded and left.
He knew that, in reality, he didn't even need to say that, that Eri would behave anyway, but he still insisted on these small rituals, part of the process of ensuring healthy and affectionate growth for her.
While walking to the director's office, he took another look around.
'I kind of dropped BNHA at some point, but if I remember correctly, there was a flying U.A. in the final arc. I'll find a way to get the blueprints for that from Nezu when he trusts me more.' Max was already thinking about how to build his own flying fortress.
After some walking, he arrived at Nezu's office and knocked on the door.
"Come in!" The voice came from inside, calm, but with an unusual undertone of seriousness, the kind of tone Nezu only used when the matter really mattered.
Upon entering, Max saw Nezu and All Might, along with Recovery Girl, who approached to talk.
"Good morning, my boy, how have you been? Why didn't you come visit me? Have you already forgotten this old lady?" She asked, with a pout so exaggerated it was obvious to anyone looking that she was having more fun than actually feeling hurt.
"Sorry, grandma. I had to solve some problems, like setting up the equipment to help All Might. You'll have to help me, okay?" Max said, apologizing with a crooked smile, knowing perfectly well that that "forgetting" was just a joke, but finding it fun to play along anyway.
Recovery Girl nodded. She had already had deep conversations about medicine with Max before, and had been impressed to realize that, on some subjects, he seemed to know more than she did. That's why she trusted him to lead the procedure.
Even though it seemed crazy for someone so young to perform a medical procedure of that level, the boy had already proven, more than once, that he knew exactly what he was doing. She would just be the assistant this time.
Max looked at All Might and asked.
"So, Yagi-sama, are you ready for the operation?"
"You can just call me Yagi-san, Max-shounen." All Might replied with that deep, cavernous voice that only his skeletal form produced.
"I already asked them to prepare the room, young Max. All the equipment is already there." Nezu said, half serious, half anxious. He really wanted to see his friend better, even knowing that "better" would still be far from "cured," given the lack of organs.
He had tried, tirelessly, to find compatible organs. But All Might had an uncommon constitution, and not every organ could withstand existing inside the body of the world's strongest man.
It wasn't enough to find a donor with compatible blood type and tissue. Common organs carried with them the donor's own Quirk Factor, imprinted in the genetics of every cell, and All Might's body, shaped by generations of accumulated One For All, simply didn't tolerate the presence of a foreign Quirk Factor circulating inside him. Even if classical immune rejection was circumvented, the organ would still be, in its deepest biological essence, something alien to that body.
And there was still the physical problem, it required a donor whose organs could, in practice, withstand the absurd stress that All Might's body imposed, especially when he activated his own power to the maximum. A common lung, for example, would simply collapse under the oxygen demand of the muscular form. It wasn't just a matter of rejection solvable with the right medication, it was the organ itself, both in genetics and structure, physically incapable of withstanding what it would need to withstand.
Not to mention the severity of the scar and destroyed tissues, the wound opened by All For One hadn't just damaged the isolated organs, but devastated the entire left torso region of the hero. Transplants require a healthy structure of tissues, blood vessels, and nerves around them for the new organ to "take" and survive, which All Might didn't have due to the massive destruction in the area.
.....
Hours passed. Or seemed to. Inside that sterilized room, there were Max, Recovery Girl, and All Might.
All Might was open, the twisted skin around the old wound carefully pulled back with surgical precision. It should have looked like the kind of scene that takes anyone's breath away, a man who was the number one hero exposed like that, vulnerable in a way no one outside that room had ever seen. But even unconscious, his expression remained strangely calm, almost at peace, as if the body knew, in some primitive way, that it was finally being truly healed.
A continuous red beam came from the device attached to an articulated arm, bathing the open area with an almost hypnotic glow. It was hard to believe that a machine like that could keep someone alive with the body in that state, and even harder to believe that, at the same time, it was rebuilding, cell by cell, the missing tissues. Where there had once been only dead scar tissue and necrosed flesh, new fibers were beginning to intertwine, pale and fragile at first, gradually gaining color and firmness.
It was, without exaggeration, a scientific miracle happening in real time. Max and Recovery Girl worked in silence, focused, precisely removing the remaining dead tissue, making space for the medigun's energy to have something to rebuild.
On the other side of the mirrored glass, from where one could observe without being seen, Nezu and his two guests watched everything.
"Fascinating. I tried to develop something to help All Might for so long, and seeing that a young man created this technological device is almost surreal." Said David Shield, a tall man of ordinary build, water-colored eyes and short, messy light brown hair, with two more prominent fringe strands and a short goatee. He wore square glasses with a wide frame and a white lab coat over his own clothes, thrown on hastily, like someone who had flown out of wherever he was the moment he received the news. On his left wrist, a dark watch and a wedding ring.
He had barely believed it when he received the news that someone could help with All Might's situation. He only accepted because it was Nezu himself who had told him, and David knew he would never lie about something like that, even if the strongest bond between the two was, strictly, the affection both had for the hero.
Having been All Might's sidekick in the past, David had already been aware of his situation for a long time, and that worried him deeply. His daughter, by his side, didn't have that advantage, she had only found out about everything recently.
Melissa was a young woman with fair skin, slightly above-average height, and a rounded face. She had wavy blonde hair that fell to the middle of her back, two shorter strands falling over her shoulders, and side-parted bangs framing her face. Her eyes, in a blue-greenish tone, had prominent upper lashes, some slightly longer at the tips, and equally pronounced lower lashes.
She couldn't believe it when her father told her about Uncle Might's true state of health. She had always believed he continued to be the invincible hero as always, the kind of figure who seemed above any weakness. Seeing it with her own eyes was something completely different from just hearing about it.
She stayed there, quiet, her fingers lightly squeezing the hem of her own blouse, her eyes going back and forth between the glass and her father's face, as if looking for some guarantee that all of this still made sense.
David had decided to tell her, even knowing how difficult it would be, because Nezu wanted to show the technology that had made it possible, and he didn't want to leave his daughter out, especially knowing how much she cared about All Might and how much her own scientific curiosity would also benefit from understanding what she was seeing.
"Yes, I already asked young Max to make a few more of these devices. He also gave me the complete blueprint of the machine, and said he would like to get in touch with you to exchange technologies." Nezu said, his small eyes shining in a way that mixed pride and caution.
"…This could save many people. But it also can't fall into the wrong hands." David said seriously, already imagining what would happen if a villain got their hands on technology of that caliber.
"Yes. He trusted us to use and protect these machines." Nezu replied, knowing exactly the kind of danger it would represent if a certain person discovered the existence of it. A person David didn't even know existed.
"Dad… how much longer do you think Uncle Might has?" Melissa asked, her voice small, laden with a melancholic sadness she could barely hide.
"Don't worry, Mel." David comforted her, his hand resting lightly on her shoulder. "I'm sure he'll have many, many more years of life now, with this serious wound finally being treated…" His voice faltered a bit at the last part. "Even if some organs are still missing."
The operation seemed to be nearing its end. Max and Recovery Girl no longer needed to remove twisted and purplish skin, now they just observed the wound closing, attentive to any sign that the new tissue was forming incorrectly, folds or adhesions that could cause problems later.
Max could have made the entire operation last less than an hour, but he wanted to copy All Might's power, so he preferred to proceed with caution. He couldn't simply speed up the process, the Quirk carries with it a bit of the consciousness of those who used it before, and inside One For All there were still echoes of previous bearers, fragments of accumulated will over generations.
Copying that in a rushed way would be like trying to read an entire book in seconds, risking missing precisely the most important parts, or worse, disturbing something that would alert All Might.
The wound, once a tangle of purple and twisted tissue, was now closing into a clean scar, still red, but whole. All Might's body, finally, no longer seemed to be held up only by sheer willpower.
The stomach was missing. Part of the left lung was missing. That couldn't be changed, not without the organs themselves, but what was left was no longer a horrible wound that seemed to pull the life out of him with every breath.
While the last layer of tissue closed, Max felt something run through his arm, a quick, almost electric shiver that rose from his hand, palm pressed against All Might's skin, to the nape of his neck. For a moment, he thought he had heard something. Voices, perhaps. Or just the echo of voices, so distant they barely seemed real.
As quickly as it came, it disappeared.
None of them truly woke up. None recognized in him what they would recognize in another person, someday. He wasn't the chosen one, just someone who had found an unlocked door and taken a quick look before closing it again.
Even so, he felt he had gained something. One For All, at its core, was pure accumulation, a capacity to store power far beyond what any body should withstand. Without the explosion instinct that true bearers developed, all that remained for Max was the structural part, one more place to store excess energy, one more layer of resistance to add to those he already had.
It wasn't All Might's power. It was just a piece of the foundation on which that power had been built.
Max released his hand, took a deep breath, and felt the tiredness finally hit.
"We're done." He said, his voice a little hoarser than he would have liked to admit.
