Chapter 130 - 129 - New Mission

Hiruzen stood over Danzō's corpse in silence for a long moment.

"Minato," he said at last, "I need you to classify what happened here as top secret. Do not make it public, and do not brand him a traitor."

He paused, then added quietly, "I do not have the right to ask this of you. But I hope you will consider it, even if it is a selfish request."

He looked down at Danzō's body again.

"Whatever his methods, he served as a high-ranking official of Konoha for over forty years. If this becomes known, the damage to the village's stability will be considerable. The council, the clans, and the civilian population all need to believe their leadership is united and worthy of trust."

Minato considered the request before responding. Then he gave a small nod.

"Very well. I will mark the matter as classified and keep it internal."

His primary objective had already been achieved. Danzō was dead. Root had been dismantled. The threat they posed to his administration was gone. Acknowledging political realities and sparing Hiruzen from seeing his oldest friend condemned publicly as a traitor cost him nothing.

And Hiruzen's reasoning wasn't wrong. Danzō had held power in Konoha for decades. Revealing the full extent of his crimes, the body modifications, the stolen Sharingan, and the manipulations carried out in the shadows, would invite uncomfortable scrutiny. People would inevitably ask how he had operated for so long without consequence. And those questions would eventually circle back to the Third Hokage's oversight.

It was easier to let sleeping dogs lie. Danzō's death could be recorded as an unfortunate casualty during the resolution of the Uchiha incident, and the village could move forward without reopening old wounds.

Off to the side, Kenji studied what remained of the man with genuine regret.

What a waste.

Danzō had been morally bankrupt, certainly. A manipulative bastard who had operated outside the law for most of his career. But his jutsu collection had been undeniably valuable. That part was difficult to ignore. Kenji would have paid a high price to acquire even a fraction of those techniques.

Danzō's Wind Release arsenal alone had been impressive. They were high-level techniques refined through decades of real combat experience. The Vacuum Sphere and the Vacuum Wave were devastating in the right hands.

Then there were the sealing techniques. There was the Tongue Eradication Seal, which prevented Root members from revealing secrets even under torture. There was the Self-Cursing Seal, capable of paralyzing and binding its target. And there was the Reverse Four Symbols Seal, a forbidden technique that could create a massive sealing sphere upon the user's death.

Beyond those techniques lay the Izanagi arrangement. By embedding Sharingan in his arm, Danzō had granted himself multiple extra lives in combat. The result looked grotesque, but the tactical advantage was undeniable. The ability to undo fatal damage and reset one's physical state multiple times within a single battle was the kind of edge that could turn an impossible fight into a victory.

All of that knowledge, and all of those techniques, were now lost.

Kenji knew better than to attempt reading Danzō's corpse directly. The man had been both paranoid and ruthless. Someone willing to implant Hashirama cells and embed Sharingan in his own arm would certainly have layered his consciousness with lethal traps and sealing mechanisms. Any attempt to extract information through Yamanaka techniques would likely trigger countermeasures designed specifically to kill mind-readers.

His only real hope now was that the raid on Root headquarters had turned up relevant scrolls. ANBU had been thorough in stripping the base of documentation. Somewhere in that pile of confiscated material, there might be training manuals or technique breakdowns he could study.

"We should move," he said, forcing his attention away from the body. He turned to Minato. "Shisui is still waiting at the Hokage's office with Itachi. We need to decide what happens to him."

Minato paused in the middle of signaling to nearby ANBU operatives, who were coordinating battlefield cleanup and prisoner transport. "Itachi has already been captured?"

"He surrendered," Kenji replied. "Right now, he is in the office with Shisui and Mikoto, waiting for your judgment."

He hesitated briefly before adding the final piece of information. "Fugaku is dead. Itachi killed him himself."

That got a reaction. "Fugaku died at his own son's hand?"

"Yeah."

Minato absorbed the news in silence for a moment. Then he turned to Kakashi and Rin, who had been standing nearby awaiting orders.

"Kakashi, you are in charge of the remaining cleanup here. Make sure everything recovered from Root's base is catalogued and secured. All prisoners are to be properly detained. Rin, you are coming with me."

"Understood," Kakashi responded immediately, already moving to coordinate with ANBU squad leaders.

Rin stepped up beside Minato. "Alright, sensei."

Minato placed his hand on her shoulder and gave a brief nod toward Hiruzen and Kenji. "We'll take our leave. Kenji, come help with the follow-up."

Before anyone could reply, he and Rin vanished via Flying Thunder God.

Kenji offered Hiruzen a quick farewell, then activated his own technique and disappeared.

---

Kenji materialized in the Hokage's office. Minato and Rin were already there, standing near the desk. Shisui was in the middle of a quiet conversation with Itachi. Both turned immediately when Kenji appeared, and Shisui straightened into a formal salute.

"Hokage-sama. Itachi has surrendered and is in custody. The mission to intercept the masked man has also been completed. The intruder withdrew from Konoha without further engagement."

"Good work, Shisui," Minato said.

The moment Itachi saw him, he stepped forward and bowed deeply.

"Hokage-sama, I am deeply sorry. Members of my own clan died by my hand. The crime is unforgivable. I am prepared to confess everything and accept execution. I ask only that the innocent members of the Uchiha clan, those who had no part in the coup, be spared."

Before Minato could respond, Mikoto spoke up from where she'd been standing near the window.

"Hokage-sama." Her voice trembled slightly. "The Uchiha clan attempted a coup against the village. As the wife of the clan head, I bear responsibility for not preventing it. But I ask that you show mercy to the innocent clansmen, especially my younger son, Sasuke. He's just a child at the Academy. He knew nothing about any of this."

Minato did not reply at once.

"Mikoto, the Uchiha are part of Konoha. They've been part of this village since its founding. I have no intention of punishing people who weren't involved in the coup planning." He glanced toward Itachi, then back to her. "Only the radical faction that actively advocated for rebellion will face consequences. They'll have their ninja status revoked and be imprisoned for reformation. But the clan itself will remain intact."

Itachi and Mikoto felt the tension leave their bodies almost at once. Their shoulders lowered, the rigid strain in their posture easing.

Compared to Danzō's proposed solution, which had called for total extermination in the name of village stability, Minato's decision was more merciful than they had hoped for. Even if punishment awaited them personally, knowing the clan would survive and that Sasuke would be safe was enough.

"Thank you," they said in unison, bowing deeply. "Thank you, Hokage-sama."

Minato acknowledged the gratitude with a slight nod, then turned his attention to Shisui. "Have all members of the Police Force been secured?"

"Yes, Hokage-sama. Everyone's accounted for. Some resisted and had to be subdued, but we avoided casualties. They're currently detained and awaiting your orders."

"Good." Minato's gaze shifted to Kenji. "What's the situation at the Uchiha compound?"

"The deceased have been properly laid to rest," Kenji reported. "The injured have been stabilized with medical ninjutsu, but they'll need to be transferred to the hospital for comprehensive treatment. ANBU are maintaining a perimeter around the compound but haven't entered the residential areas. They have not entered the residential districts in order to avoid escalating tensions."

Minato nodded slowly as he processed the report. After a moment, his attention returned to Mikoto.

"I will need your assistance. ANBU must determine which clan members were part of the radical faction. As clan head, Fugaku would have maintained records. Personnel lists, meeting notes, any documentation that distinguishes those who planned the coup from those who were merely following orders or were entirely unaware."

He paused, and when he spoke again, his tone softened.

"Once you have assisted with the identification process, no charges will be brought against you. You withdrew from active duty years ago, and as for Fugaku…" He let the words trail off. Nothing more needed to be said.

"I will not have Sasuke lose his mother after already losing his father. The boy has endured enough."

Mikoto's eyes glistened, but she maintained her composure. "Thank you, Hokage-sama. I'll provide whatever assistance you need."

She didn't plead for leniency for Itachi. She understood the situation too well. Having been a kunoichi herself, she knew that killing fellow village ninjas, regardless of the reasoning, was a line you couldn't uncross. No amount of explanation or justification would erase that act.

Minato's attention finally settled on Itachi.

The young man stood straighter under the scrutiny. After receiving medical treatment, he looked significantly better than he had immediately following the confrontation. He could stand without support, and the worst of his injuries had been addressed. But exhaustion still showed in the set of his shoulders and the shadows under his eyes.

"By all rights," Minato began slowly, "killing fellow villagers is a capital offense. The punishment for that is execution."

Itachi's expression did not change. He had already accepted that outcome. His hands remained at his sides, ready to face whatever judgment awaited him.

"However, the village has need of you."

That caught Itachi off guard. A flicker of confusion crossed his face before he could suppress it.

"You have had direct contact with the masked man. You possess information about him, his capabilities, his methods, and perhaps even his goals. I want you to gather intelligence on him for Konoha. Officially, you will be listed as a missing-nin. After leaving the village, you will approach him as a traitor to Konoha and cooperate under that identity. In truth, you will act as our spy. Can you do this?"

Itachi stood motionless for a heartbeat as his thoughts processed the unexpected proposal. Then he firmly said, "Yes, Hokage-sama. I will complete the mission. I will gather whatever intelligence you require."

Without hesitation, he began recounting everything he knew. The masked man had claimed to be Uchiha Madara. That was almost certainly false, yet the choice of identity suggested something about his mindset and ambitions. He had also extended an invitation for Itachi to join an organization known as Akatsuki.
