Chapter 70 - Chapter 70 : When Silence Fights Back

By Friday morning, the photo had reached almost everyone.

Riven knew because no one bothered pretending anymore.

Some students stared openly. Others whispered behind their hands. A few laughed without lowering their voices. It wasn't loud chaos — it was worse.

It was bold.

Eli walked beside him like always, shoulders straight, expression unreadable.

But Riven could feel it.

The pressure.

The build-up.

Like a storm waiting for the first strike.

They were halfway down the main corridor when someone finally said it out loud.

"Hey, Navarro!"

Eli stopped.

Riven's chest tightened instantly.

A small group of boys stood near the staircase. Not athletes. Not popular. Just loud enough to feel powerful in numbers.

One of them smirked. "You gonna post more couple pics, or was that a one-time thing?"

A few nearby students snickered.

Eli didn't react immediately. His face remained calm — too calm.

Riven stepped slightly closer to him.

"Let's just go," Riven whispered.

But one of the boys stepped forward, blocking their path.

"What? We're just curious," he said mockingly. "Did your dad approve the relationship announcement?"

The hallway went quiet.

Too quiet.

Riven felt heat rush to his face. Not embarrassment — anger.

But before he could speak, Eli did.

"Move."

His voice wasn't loud.

It didn't need to be.

The boy laughed. "Or what?"

Eli stepped closer.

Close enough that the smirk faltered slightly.

"Or you'll realize you're not as brave without an audience."

The tension snapped tight.

For a second, it looked like something worse might happen.

Then—

"Enough."

A firm voice cut through the hallway.

Mrs. Alvarado, the discipline coordinator, stood at the end of the corridor, arms crossed.

"You three. Office. Now."

The boys froze.

"You too, Eli," she added.

Murmurs erupted instantly.

Riven's heart dropped. "Ma'am, he didn't—"

"Office," she repeated.

The walk there felt longer than usual.

Inside, the air smelled of paperwork and old air conditioning.

Mrs. Alvarado closed the door behind them.

"I am not interested in gossip," she began firmly. "But I am very interested in behavior."

She turned to the boys first.

"I've received complaints about comments being made in the hallway. Would you like to explain yourselves?"

Silence.

One of them shifted uncomfortably. "We were just joking."

"Humiliation is not a joke," she replied sharply.

Then she turned to Eli.

"And you. I expect better than confrontation."

Eli held her gaze. "I didn't start it."

"I didn't say you did," she replied. "But you escalated."

Eli didn't argue.

After a long pause, she sighed.

"This school does not tolerate harassment," she said firmly, looking at the other boys. "You will receive a warning. One more incident and it becomes suspension."

Their confidence drained immediately.

"And as for you, Eli," she continued, softer now, "walking away is sometimes stronger than standing your ground."

Eli nodded once. "Yes, ma'am."

They were dismissed.

Outside the office, Riven was waiting.

The moment he saw Eli, he rushed forward.

"Are you okay?"

Eli nodded. "I'm fine."

The other boys avoided eye contact as they walked away.

Riven searched Eli's face. "You didn't have to fight."

"I didn't," Eli said quietly. "I just didn't want them thinking we'd stay silent forever."

Riven hesitated. "Are we going to have to keep doing this?"

Eli looked down the hallway — at the lockers, the classrooms, the watching eyes.

"Maybe," he admitted.

Riven's shoulders dropped.

"But not alone," Eli added.

That made Riven look up.

Eli gave him a tired, small smile.

"We don't owe them explanations. And we don't owe them fear."

Riven exhaled slowly.

For the first time, the whispers felt less powerful.

Not gone.

But weaker.

Because now the line had been drawn.

And it wasn't just Eli standing anymore.

It was both of them.

Together.
