Chapter 26 - Chapter 25: White Mage

『Hakari Kotaro』

"I have to say, Dearie, I didn't expect a young man like you to choose to spend your Sunday like this."

Recovery Girl commented as I stretched in her office at Mustafu Hospital. It was currently Sunday, early morning. My training with Momo went really well, but I decided, since I was helping Momo train, I might as well train myself as well.

So, I asked Nezu to ask Recovery Girl to help me train my Healing Quirk, Lesser Aid. And the idea she came up with was for me to help her and volunteer at the hospital. Which slightly humored me, Yakuza volunteering to heal people.

"Not really altruism, I wanted to get used to healing people since I have the quirk, and I thought the best person to ask would be the best healer in Japan."

She nodded with a smile on her face. I felt like I earned a lot of brownie points with our local school nurse just by asking for this and agreeing to volunteer. Even though wearing scrubs felt awkward as all hell, but sanitation was more important than my comfort apparently.

"Good thing you did dearie, when I heard a student had a healing power, Nezu himself had to stop me from grabbing you up. It's good that you want to cultivate your gift; healing quirks are very rare, especially like yours. Don't waste it. Speaking of, boy, would you like to help me out at the Nurses' office in UA? It would be a great learning experience."

"You sure you aren't saying that because you are tired of treating students and want to offload some of -ack!"

I was whacked over the head by the cane of the old woman carrying fossilized fury.

"How rude! But I'm serious, Hakari-kun, I can give you healing and aid lessons in the infirmary during some of your classes if you volunteer. You do not get the importance of a hero who can both fight and heal. Plus, it would look really good on your record to be known as one of the only student assistant nurses in UA history."

My lips narrowed as I mulled over the matter. There really did not seem to be any problems with such an arrangement. I'd actually prefer it, I had Intermediate Biology, sure, but no experience in other related stuff.

"Sure, if you can convince Nezu-sensei to make the arrangements, I'll gladly be your pupil, Recovery Girl-sensei."

She smiled, but still poked my ribs with her cane.

"Pupil is overblown. But if Nezu knows any better, he won't say no. And I know Nezu knows better."

Yep, that tracks. You do NOT fuck with the White Mage. Especially when they were the best White Mage in the country. Recovery Girl was one of the highest authorities of UA due to the fact that her healing was half the reason why UA's Curriculum was possible in the first place.

Knock Knock

"Recovery Girl-san, you have a patient."

A young nurse entered the room and called out to the elderly woman who tapped me on the leg with her can in return.

"Alright Hakari-kun, it's time, follow me."

I followed the old woman as she said, feeling quite uncomfortable with the stares of the nurses as I walked past, it definitely did not feel like I belonged. I had my hair up in a bun and wore scrubs; it felt unnatural. Not to mention even with this getup I still looked like a typical punk.

"Hakari-kun, it's actually quite good that you are here. While your healing is nowhere near as potent as mine, the fact that it consumes your own energy instead of your patients has both upsides and downsides."

Instead of paying attention to the surroundings, I decided to listen to Recovery Girl's small lecture intently.

"My healing is quite strenuous, so I can't heal those who are too injured or those who cannot handle the healing. You must have felt the exhaustion after I heal a person. I cannot treat patients who are too old because of this, but your healing is the opposite; you can heal those I cannot. Which is really important in a hospital. There are quite a lot of elderly people who fall and break something important, and then I can't treat them. So you will be handling them instead."

My head tilted in a questioning manner.

"Can I even? Don't you need licenses for that?"

She gave me a very self-assured smile that somewhat reminded me of All Might.

"Who do you think you are talking to, boy? There is no one in Japan more qualified than me to say who can and cannot use their quirk to heal people, especially when I'm looking over you. Even those annoying bureaucrats can only whine. So just follow my lead and do what I tell you."

Wow, old lady is kind of a badass, huh?

"Oh, thank you, young man! I feel so much better thanks to you! These old bones feel like they are alive again!"

I wiped sweat from my brow as the very elderly man with a broken hip thanked me. He stood up and stretched a little with a bright smile on his face.

"You're... welcome, man. Give me- give me a moment."

The man left the room as I took deep breaths and chugged water. I wiped away the sweat beading on my brows with my arm.

"I say you are doing pretty good, boy. How are you feeling? I know how tiring healing can be; using my quirk can tire me out too, but not as much as yours since you are using your own energy to heal."

"Just peachy. I never healed this many people before, so I'm getting used to it."

I had already learned much from Recovery Girl, like stabilizing the bones before applying the ability, holding to broken bones, dealing with a flailing patient, identifying injuries from patients who cannot describe their own injuries, and so on. I must have healed at least 20 people by now, from nasty bruises, cuts, broken bones, to dislocated joints.

The thing that was most foreign to me was people thanking me profusely after I healed them. The contrast of people crying after I break their bones and the people in this hospital smiling after I heal them made me feel very uncomfortable.

"You can take a rest, Dearie, you handle non-essential injuries after all, they can wait a little while, the staff exists for a reason, while they cannot heal directly, they are still professionals."

My body slumped onto the chair, and Recovery Girl handed me a towel that I used to wipe off some more of my sweat.

"This is some tough work."

Recovery Girl sat next to me.

"It really is. I'm impressed you handled it so well. I was going to get you used to handling injuries without getting squeamish, but it seems like I don't need to. Good job Sonny."

She patted my back as I closed my eyes for a moment. I pushed the awkward feelings away to focus on relaxing and regaining my energy, pulling up some chocolate bars from my bag and munching on them.

"You did have that bag, right. You know, Sonny, you could bring a lot of medicine with you and use it on the field. You'd be the perfect battlefield medic with it-"

Slam!

"Recovery Girl! We need you on scene, a young boy, elementary school age, is here with a broken leg!"

"Oi, don't slam the door. Boy, follow me."

Couldn't even give me a moment? I got up and chased after the two. Recovery Girl moved with unprecedented grace for her age, forcing me to chase after her, but then I got an idea. I stopped the nurse.

"Which floor? Closest to which room? Answer fast please."

"First floor, children's wing."

I nodded and swapped in door crossing, feeling every door in the building, and compared it to what I knew before locating the best door.

"Alright, through this door, I used door crossing."

The old lady, already knowing my ability, went in without reservation, and I jumped in after her, seeing a rather unpleasant sight of a child on a stretcher looking out of it, probably anesthetized, while his leg looked an awful mix of blue and red. Next to him, alongside the nurses, was a suspiciously familiar woman, but I couldn't put my finger on it, so I went past her with Recovery Girl.

"Hakari, start healing him. You, what happened to him?"

I nodded and held my hand out toward the boy's legs, a green healing glow emanating from my hand, and started imbuing his leg with healing energies. Meanwhile, the woman Recovery Girl had pointed to stuttered.

"H-his friend just awakened his quirk while they were playing and accidentally broke his leg with it! Is he going to be okay!?"

Recovery Girl patted the woman on the back comfortingly while I bit the inside of my cheek to try and stave off the exhaustion. Using healing like this felt like trying to work out while being incredibly sleepy.

"Don't worry, young lady, he'll be fine. My apprentice does good work. Now, what's your relation to this kid? There'll be some paperwork you'll have to fill out."

The woman recovered her composure and nodded.

"R-right, thank you very much! I'm his teacher, I'm Fuyumi Todoroki, and I work at Kyuhei Elementary. I already informed the parents; they should be arriving shortly."

That made me blink incredulously at the uttered words, but I did not lift my head. I knew if I got distracted while treating the boy, I was going to get caned over the head. Due to the break being a complex fracture, it took several minutes and a lot of my energy to heal. After I was done, they moved the boy to a room to rest and shake off the anesthesia. All the while I slumped down onto a chair and lifted my shirt to wipe my forehead.

Man, I have a new appreciation for healthcare professionals.

Sorry for all the work I sent your way in my previous life.

As I was trying to catch my breath and chugging an energy drink to stay awake, I noticed the woman from before approach me hesitantly. Allowing me to get a good look at her, she had quite a figure for sure, large breasts, and wide hips, yet very balanced proportions that made me nod in appreciation. She was dressed in jeans and a pink sweater with a yellow apron in front, her hair was snow white with red patches and was tied into a short ponytail. While her soft grey eyes were framed by a pair of glasses.

"Hello, I'd like to thank you personally for healing Kanja-kun. I didn't get to back then. Thank you very much!"

The woman whom I identified very quickly now that I saw her with my own eyes was Todoroki's hot sister. She bowed her head slightly while I got up and fanned myself, noticing her eyes drifting to my collar line before she met my eyes head-on.

"When you say that it makes me feel kinda embarrassed. But hearing a pretty lady thank me makes this all feel worth it. The names' Hakari Kotaro from UA, you are...?"

She brightened up and clasped her hands together, her brilliant smile really highlighting what a beauty she was.

"You're from UA? So is my brother! His name is Shoto Todoroki. Do you know him?"

"Yeah, we are in the same class. He's a bit quiet, but not a bad guy."

She took my hands and smiled so brightly that I felt my corneas get burnt to a crisp and turned to ash before floating away with the winds.

"Is that so? I'm so glad he is not being bullied or anything, what a relief!"

...Shoto? Being bullied? I'm pretty sure he'd be the one who does the bullying more than anything.

We kept talking, more like Fuyumi asking me about Shoto and whatnot while I subtly flirted. After the kid woke up Fuyumi left and I scratched my head. I'm sure I'll meet sooner than later. For now, I was ready to go home and clock out.

But just before I left after changing, Recovery Grandma patted me on the back with a proud smile.

"Good job Sonny, you did great work today. Go home and rest."

"I'll do that, Granny."

Feeling vindicated from my verbal slight after the amount of cane trashings I got today, I took off into a sprint with all my power as Recovery Old Person shouted from behind me before I felt something promptly whack the back of my head.

Is that a fucking hospital slipper!? Where did she find that!? She wears shoes!

"You aren't the first one to try and pull a fast one on me, Sonny! I'll see you at UA!

As I got farther from her I slowed my pace down and looked at my interface while rubbing the back of my head.

A good day's work if I do say so myself.

A/N: To say a Hakari is out of habitat is an understatement. He is like a penguin in the desert. But Recovery Girl certainly appreciates his involvement, she will raise him to be the best healer in existence just to be able to retire without UA falling apart. At least he has those brownie points right? Did you guys expect Hakari to do something like going to a hospital, what did you think about this little excursion? I'd love to know.

Shoto's elementary school teacher sister is here, well, she won't get involved that much yet but I wanted to introduce her early to set up some things. I really like Fuyumi's design and character, she is really underutilized. What do you guys think about her?
