Chapter 39 - The Abyss Between Us

The wind howled, the earth trembled, and the sky split open as if some ancient force had ripped through the fabric of reality itself. In the center of it all stood Selene, her arms raised as the power surged through her veins like wildfire, untamed and unstoppable. She was no longer just the woman who had been running from her past; she was something older, something divine.

Her eyes were glowing, a fiery gold that mirrored the moon above. But that glow wasn't just from the moon. It was from the god in her blood—the one who had slept for centuries, chained deep beneath the earth. Now, that god was waking, clawing its way back into the mortal realm.

Kai stood just a few paces away, his gaze locked on her. His chest rose and fell in rapid breaths, every muscle coiled as though ready to strike or flee. His eyes were filled with a mix of fury, fear, and something deeper—something that Selene could not name but knew all too well.

"Selene…" Kai's voice was rough, hoarse from the emotion that burned in his throat. "You have to stop this. You don't know what you're awakening."

Her lips curled into a smile that didn't quite reach her eyes. "You're right. I don't. But that doesn't mean I won't embrace it."

The ground beneath them cracked as the god's presence thickened in the air. The wolves surrounding them—both allies and enemies—stiffened, instinctively feeling the power that radiated from her. Some bowed their heads, others bared their teeth, but none dared to move.

And then, there was a voice—a voice so deep it seemed to reverberate through the very marrow of their bones.

"You are my child."

The voice was Eryndor's, the god who had once ruled the shadows before his imprisonment. It was not just a voice that spoke to her—it was a presence that filled her completely, pushing her senses to their limits, drowning her in the weight of his power. She felt as though she were being consumed by it, her body quaking under the immense pressure.

"I… I can't hold it back…" Selene gasped, her knees threatening to give way.

Kai stepped forward, his hand reaching out as though to pull her back from the abyss. "Selene, listen to me. You are not just his anymore. You are still you. You can fight this!"

But the words felt hollow, even to him. The power that had awakened in her, the bloodline that ran deep, was not something easily denied. Not now. Not when it was rising to claim its birthright.

Lucian, still standing at the edge of the clearing, finally stepped forward, his eyes narrowed. "You've made a mistake, Selene," he called, his voice carrying across the battlefield. "You don't have to embrace this. You don't have to become his vessel. You can still choose your own path."

But Selene's gaze was locked on the horizon now, where the second moon—red and angry—hung suspended in the sky. The gods were awakening, the seals breaking one by one. And with each pulse of her heart, she felt her connection to them deepening.

"I am not afraid of what I am," she said, her voice strong, though it trembled with the weight of her revelation. "I am who I was always meant to be. The one who ends it all. The one who makes them kneel."

Kai's heart ached at her words. He could feel it—the change. The Selene he had once known, the woman who had been so fragile yet so fierce, was slipping away. In her place was something untouchable, something other. He had seen it in her eyes, that fire. That wildness.

"Don't lose yourself to this, Selene," Kai whispered, his voice breaking. "I need you. We need you."

For a moment, she looked at him—really looked at him—and something flickered in her eyes. Was it hesitation? Regret? Or was it just the final flicker of the woman she had been before this power completely consumed her?

But before she could speak, the ground shook violently, and the earth split open beneath them.

From the chasm that had formed, a figure emerged—tall, glowing with an unearthly fire, a silhouette of shadow and light. The god they had feared, the one who had slumbered for so long. He stepped into the world once more, his presence bending the very air around them.

Eryndor.

He was even more magnificent than Selene had imagined. His eyes glowed like twin suns, and his body radiated with a terrifying aura, one that pushed against the very fabric of reality. His voice was like thunder when he spoke.

"It is time."

The wolves around them knelt, unable to stand in the presence of the god. The power in the air was overwhelming, a crushing weight that made their hearts race and their limbs tremble. Even Lucian stepped back, his expression shifting from defiance to awe.

But Selene? She didn't move. She didn't flinch.

"I am ready," she said, her voice steady. "Let it begin."

Kai's eyes widened as the realization hit him—she was no longer in control. This wasn't just about her bloodline. This wasn't just about her revenge or her right to rule. She had already surrendered herself to Eryndor's will.

And Kai could feel it, deep in his chest—the pull of her power. The need to claim her, to have her, to hold her in ways that went beyond what he had ever imagined. His heart thudded painfully in his chest. He was torn between his love for her and his fear of what she was becoming.

Lucian stepped forward, his gaze flicking between Selene and the god. "This is madness," he said, his voice barely a whisper. "You're sealing your fate, Selene. You're becoming a tool for them."

But Selene didn't answer. Instead, she reached out with her hand, and Eryndor's power surged forward. Lightning crackled across the sky, and the ground beneath them trembled. The moon above them glowed brighter, its light now a blinding beacon of divine energy.

The wolves howled as one, their voices rising in unison. The battle for control had begun.
