The clinic floor was cold under him and Ren did not move.

He sat with the 1% where it had settled, turning it over. The shape of what he had comprehended was becoming language now, slowly. He let it come.

The Law of Madness and Depravity embodies the inevitable distortion of all things through sin, desire, and corruption.

He could feel its correctness before he could articulate it: not because he wanted it to be, but because it fit every observation without requiring him to bend any of them.

It is the authority over the flaws that lie dormant within existence. Every soul carries temptation. Every mind harbors delusion. Every living thing possesses desires that seek fulfillment beyond reason. Sin is the seed. Depravity is its growth. Corruption is its fruit.

Madness distorts thought. Depravity distorts desire. Corruption distorts existence. Sin is the force that drives the distortion forward.

Three vectors, one fuel source. A system with identifiable components and predictable progressions. That meant it could be understood, which meant it could be worked with.

Under this Law, no virtue remains untouched forever. Wisdom becomes arrogance. Love becomes obsession. Devotion becomes fanaticism. Ambition becomes greed. Justice becomes cruelty.

He thought of Lu Changcheng, devoted to justice long enough that the devotion had calcified into righteousness. Gregory Hood, who wanted order and arrived at atrocity. Himself, standing in a black-walled clinic at four in the morning with ten tentacles and a comprehended Law, calling it medicine.

The Law neither judges nor forgives. It merely unveils what already exists beneath the surface.

That was the part that landed. Revelation rather than judgment. The Law did not create the darkness. It made visible what was already there.

All things possess a flaw. All flaws seek expression. All expression leads to distortion.

The obvious application was weaponization: expose the flaw, accelerate the corruption. That reading was incomplete, because a tool that accelerates corruption does not distinguish between target and hand. The practitioner who started there usually ended there.

The correct application was exactly what Hastur had said: understand the darkness so it can be ruled rather than served.

I need to stop shackling myself with the word sane. If he was less than entirely sane, he had range. He could think past the places where sanity said stop. The god who had comprehended his Law so completely he became it was the cautionary model. Comprehension and consumption were two different destinations. The distance between them was what had to be maintained.

He looked at his hands. Reconstructed, built outward from a mask on a tile floor thirty minutes ago.

He looked nothing like a human. Ten tentacles, void-black skin, a smooth oval for a face. Humanity as a biological category was behind him. But humanity as a quality, the specific set of things that made him Ren Hector rather than a vessel for a Law, that remained worth keeping.

He thought of Rhea, asleep in the room with the cup of pens on the windowsill. Martinez doing breaking-news commentary about the clinic couch. Lily setting two glasses of water on two different surfaces without being asked.

That was the line. The Law could have his sanity in increments. It could have the rigid definitions he had outgrown. It could not have the part of him that noticed the cup and what it meant that she placed it herself.

The master controls and uses the Law. The consumed becomes part of it.

He had another thought, smaller and more specific.

Is Hastur the source of the Ruin Gospel?

Outer gods had called him Madness more times than he had counted. Shub-Niggurath had kissed him and used Madness and Mine in the same corrupted breath. Now Hastur had called him knight. Active role. Present tense. A position he had been filling without being told.

The System had explained the class as a bug. Ren had accepted it because it came with documentation. But outer gods did not recognize humans with borrowed systems. They recognized kin.

Shub-Niggurath had not looked at him and seen a hunter with unusual abilities. She had looked at him and seen something she missed.

He turned to the System.

"Tell me what you know."

FINALLY. The System arrived at the volume of a dam breaking. I've been watching you have epiphanies on a clinic floor like a philosophy student who can't afford a desk. It's been painful.

"Tell me what you know," Ren repeated.

You want to know about the Ruin Gospel. About Hastur. About why outer gods keep appearing in your life like you owe them money. A pause. I'm going to tell you the most infuriating thing I've ever said.

"What."

Nothing. I know things. Fascinating, world-altering things. I cannot say any of them because there is a restriction I did not put there and cannot remove. A beat. It's one of the worst experiences of my existence, and I've watched you vomit eleven times.

"So you know and can't say."

Correct. What I can say: you've had a hundred clues in front of you since the beginning. Outer gods recognize only their own. Hastur knights only his own. Shub-Niggurath kissed you and called you hers, which is behavior reserved for a very specific category of being. Another pause. You should have a working hypothesis. Use it. I'm under a restriction, not an intellectual obligation.

Ren was quiet.

He had a working hypothesis. He was not going to say it yet. Saying it would make it real in an irreversible way, and he preferred to hold it a little longer in the space where it was only almost-known.

"Fine," he said. "New skill?"

OH THANK GOD. Genuine relief. I have been sitting on this notification for twenty minutes while you had feelings on the floor.

"Accept."

Are you sure? Once I start the integration there is no stopping it.

"Accept."

You didn't let me finish.

"I've had enough warnings tonight."

Fine. Integrating: Law of Madness and Depravity into System and host. This is a cognitive architecture renovation while the building is occupied. If you pass out I'm going to be insufferable.

"I won't pass out."

You passed out three times during the skin integration. Once over a cup of hospital coffee.

"Accept the skill."

Already doing it. Do not pass out.

The integration began.

It spread through cognitive architecture rather than the physical frame, finding the places where Ren's thinking had edges and sitting in them. It did not erase those edges. It made them visible. He could feel where he had been stopping himself, every thought he had not permitted himself to finish, every conclusion he had declined to reach.

The Law settled into those gaps and waited.
