Chapter 223 - 223

Soon after, Cai was forcibly taken to the police station. And once even he faced compulsory detention, it was obvious—

No one else involved would escape.

Meanwhile, in the outskirts of Savannah…

In a rundown neighborhood, Henry and his family were holed up inside their small house, grinning from ear to ear as they stared at the $60,000 sitting in their bank account.

Henry threw his head back and laughed loudly:

"Man, originally I just wanted Julia's family to pay the two years of sponsorship payments they owed — five, six thousand total. Never thought that idiot rich boy would cough up sixty thousand dollars in one go! That Jason Carter must be some brainless rich kid with more money than sense!"

His wife laughed too, though she sighed a little.

"Honestly, if he's such a fool with too much money, you should've pushed harder. Sixty thousand… it'll be gone fast. Not even enough for a down payment on a city house."

Henry's teenage son chimed in, eyes shining:

"Dad! Now that we're rich, I don't need to go to school anymore, right?"

Henry slapped him lightly on the back of the head.

"Of course you're going to school! And listen—don't tell anyone we have money. We can still apply for poverty aid at school."

His wife hesitated.

"Are you sure Julia's mom is fine? They're not gonna come after us, right?"

Henry snorted proudly.

"They're scared! Didn't you see? They were so terrified they paid us to leave. Honestly, if I knew this would happen, I should've knocked that woman's head sooner! Then we'd have had this sixty thousand ages ago."

Just then—

BANG BANG BANG!

A hard knock sounded at the door.

Henry tensed. With so much money, they were extra cautious. He cracked the door open—

And froze.

Police officers stood outside.

Henry panicked and tried to shut the door, but the officers pushed it open.

"Henry," one of them said, stepping forward, "you need to come with us."

Henry forced a confused smile.

"O-Officer, what are you talking about? I didn't commit any crime!"

The officers displayed their badges.

"You are suspected of felony aggravated battery and extortion. You are now being detained according to the law."

Click.

Handcuffs snapped around his wrists.

Henry's face drained of color.

Battery? Extortion?

He tried to protest—

"When did I extort anyone?! That money was given to me! They gave it willingly!"

But he was already being dragged out the door.

Elsewhere — at a bank in the city

In the VIP room, Glen Mills lounged in a leather chair with his legs crossed like he owned the place.

Sipping complimentary tea.

Admiring the polite smiles of the staff.

This—this was the peak of his life.

He had never even walked past the VIP entrance before. Now he was inside, holding a briefcase full of cash.

A whole $150,000 — all his.

He couldn't stop fantasizing:

He wouldn't tell his wife.He wouldn't spend it all at once. He'd sneak off to fancy restaurants… buy expensive cigarettes… treat himself to massages…

Life finally felt good.

Just as he was deciding which restaurant he'd try first—

The door burst open.

Police walked in, flashed their badges, and handcuffed him immediately.

They seized the briefcase before he could react.

Glen shot to his feet in panic.

"H-Hey! That's my money! You have no right! I didn't commit a crime! It was Henry and Dave who pushed Julia's mom—I had nothing to do with that!"

A police officer replied coldly:

"You are suspected of extortion and criminal conspiracy. You are now being detained according to the law."

Glen's jaw dropped in horror.

"What extortion?! They gave me this money willingly! Half of it was the sponsorship they owed us! The other half was… was… my service fee for giving information!"

But his screams didn't matter.

Handcuffed, he was dragged out of the room.

The briefcase of cash already logged as evidence.

Jason's trap had fully closed.

By accepting the money, every greedy relative had legally implicated themselves.

The arrests were happening one by one.

And this was only the beginning.

Glen Mills didn't understand the law at all.In his mind, he had done nothing wrong.

The police, however, weren't interested in explaining anything to him. They cuffed him, seized the cash, and dragged him back to the station.

Meanwhile — in a home in rural Georgia

In their living room, stacks of cash formed a messy little hill on the table.Winston and his parents were laughing like hyenas.

Winston tossed bills into the air like confetti.

His father howled with laughter.

"They dared shut down our factory—thought they were so powerful! But look now! Cowards! Our factory was only worth two hundred thousand, and we milked Jason Carter for sixty thousand easy! If we knew it was this profitable, we would've caused trouble at Julia's family workshop years ago!"

His mother hugged a pile of cash and kissed it repeatedly.

"Julia's family promised sponsorship payments but didn't pay for two whole years! They owed us! And since they ruined our factory, sixty thousand isn't even enough! Honestly, we should've asked for more!"

She leaned in and whispered, "Winston, that rich boy of hers—Jason—he looks loaded. Next time, let's go to the hospital and make trouble. They'll give more if they're scared of upsetting the patient."

A greedy glint flashed in Winston's eyes.

"No, we can't make a scene at the hospital. That guy Jason might call the cops. But later? After they're back from school? We can keep milking them. Slow and steady. Whenever we need cash, we'll go harass their family. They'll pay again."

Just then—

BANG BANG BANG!

A heavy knock at the door.

They froze. They shoved the cash into drawers, under cushions, behind the couch.

Then opened the door—

Police officers.

"Evening," one said. "Are you Frank Winston?"

Winston smiled nervously. "Yes, sir? How can I help you?"

The officer showed his badge.

"You are suspected of felony extortion. You are now being detained according to the law."

Winston's face collapsed.

"What— extortion? I didn't extort anyone!"

His parents tried to block the officers—shouting, arguing, even attempting to grab their arms.

Within seconds, both were restrained and taken in as well for obstruction of justice and assault on an officer.

Winston sat in the back of the police car, eyes darting wildly.

This wasn't the plan.Jason was supposed to be the idiot rich kid who paid to keep quiet.

Why were the police here?!

At the Savannah Police Department

Winston was marched into the holding area. There, his heart dropped—

Mills, Henry, Dave, and dozens of them were already lined up in handcuffs.

Every face was pale.Every gaze was filled with regret and terror.

They exchanged whispers.

"Extortion…"

"Provoking trouble…"

"Intentional injury…"

Winston felt the blood drain from his head.

Henry and Dave had an extra charge:Felony Aggravated Battery, for injuring Julia's mother.

Winston felt faint.

He immediately used his right to call a lawyer.

But during the last incident—when Jason's legal team destroyed his family's factory—Winston had burned every bridge he had.

No lawyer wanted to touch his case.

Desperate, he called a law student from his college he vaguely knew.

Winston exaggerated heavily, painting himself as innocent.

But when the law student finished listening, he said coldly:

"For years, you threatened Julia's family for money and caused trouble whenever they didn't pay. That's already extortion."

"This time, you broke into their workshop, harassed them, and someone got seriously injured. That's felony extortion with aggravating circumstances."

"And the amount? Sixty thousand? That qualifies as extortion of an especially large amount."

He paused before delivering the blow:

"You are definitely going to prison."

Winston's lips trembled. "N-No… Jason tricked me—he gave the money on purpose! I-It's all a setup! He framed—"

The law student cut him off, voice dripping with disdain:

"Shut up. You did extort them. Everyone knows it. And everyone saw the news online. You all deserve it."

"Even if I were a licensed attorney—which I'm not—I wouldn't defend trash like you."

He continued:

"And don't bother hunting for a lawyer. The evidence is too strong. Extortion of this scale carries ten years minimum."

"This isn't a misunderstanding. It isn't a negotiation.This is your sentencing."

The line went dead.

Winston's knees buckled.Cold sweat poured down his forehead.

Ten years.

He was barely in his twenties.

Ten years in prison meant his life was over.

And he knew exactly how inmates treated someone weak like him.

He felt like vomiting from fear. Then—

He collapsed to his knees with a loud thud.

His voice cracked:

"Officer—please… please help me contact Jason Carter…"

"I-I'll return the money—every cent…"

"I'll get it back… I swear… I don't want the money anymore…"

"Just… please tell him… tell him to spare me…"

"I don't want to die in prison…"
