"We have a major problem... the statue is walking and all, but the thing is... there's no land in sight, and we have no food."
Cassie glared in his direction.
"You think we don't know that!"
Sunny shrunk back a little, leaning on Nephis's back. They were keeping watch on both sides.
"You get moody without food, you know th—"
"Once again... you think... we don't know that?"
Sunny shrunk back even more. Where was the reclusive, shy, passive, innocent, borderline—
"You dare to finish those thoughts?"
"Sorry."
---
All three of them had changed quite a bit, in all honesty. He was acting like how he thought a hero should for the first time, Nephis was opening up even if she didn't fully realize it herself yet, and Cassie was being quite brash. That wasn't all for her, though... something was going on with her he couldn't quite put his finger on.
Still, the reason he was having those thoughts was because once more they were on death's door. It's been happening too often lately, in all honesty. While Sleepers can survive a tiny bit longer without food or water, they were already past the point a mundane could survive.
They'd been on this statue for about a week. For some reason, they hadn't seen the sun in a week either. So, to put it simply—
They had been without food, water, and light for about a week, leaving them pretty much insane.
Well, at least what he would consider insane. After all, they had each other, which kept them from entirely losing their minds. With that said, that brought another thing—when you go insane with other people, you gradually get attached, right? Well, that was true for them also, which is why the three of them were arguing over who would essentially sacrifice their life for the other two to live.
"Even if we keep going... I'll only be a hindrance anyways! Just let me—!"
"God damn it, Cassie, no! In the end, it's better if it would be me!"
"Both of you, let go."
At the time, both of them were holding Nephis back from jumping into the ocean to lure nightmare creatures.
Actually, that gave Sunny an idea.
Driven to the brink of insanity, he made his choice. With a crazed smile, he made a suggestion.
"Why don't we just eat me?"
---
"It's simple! Cut off my arm or something, cook it with your flame and cauterize the wound! Or you could even heal it into a nub, but then I'm not sure if I could replace it after..."
"Sunny, where are you?"
"Well, judging from your voice, I'm to your left!"
He could hear steps coming near him before he was grabbed and thrown to the ground of the stone statue.
"Cassie... come spank him."
They were joking, right? It must have been to intimidate him! Why did he hear steps getting closer?
"Wait! Wait! Wait!"
Sunny managed to slip out of Nephis's arms as he tumbled back.
"I was serious!"
Her flames ignited, but he could only tell by the sounds of kindling fire—the darkness drowned out the light.
"I know. That's why you have to be put into place."
He grit his teeth, a serious look coming on his face for the first time this whole time.
"Then do you have any other suggestions!? If we go down there, we all know only death awaits! In darkness, only the strongest of nightmare creatures will come out, and in our current state, we have no chance against any nightmare creature! With the darkness, our physical and mental state, and the fact the nightmare creatures are most likely the pinnacle of the ones in this area—we don't have a choice!"
He clenched his eyes shut as he felt heat rise to his face from embarrassment about the cheesy lines he just said. Still, he wasn't going to stop even while being aware of it.
"I can't lose anybody else, especially when I have an option to save them... so please, just let me save you!"
"Sunn—"
"No! I don't want to hea—"
"Sunny."
He finally opened his eyes, only to be met with the faces of Nephis and Cassie. He was also met with light... and what seemed to be a dark city.
