Chapter 147 - The almost rain

The sky looked uncertain.

Grey clouds stretched across it, not dark enough for a storm—but not clear either.

"Do you think it's going to rain?" Kai asked, glancing up.

Velithra shrugged. "Maybe."

They were walking without a plan again, drifting through quiet streets.

It had become their thing lately.

No destination.

Just time.

A light breeze picked up, carrying that faint smell of rain.

Kai noticed it first.

"That smell always shows up before anything happens," he said.

Velithra nodded. "Like a warning."

"Or a promise," he added.

She glanced at him.

"That something's coming."

They reached a small open area near the edge of town.

No buildings close by.

Just space.

The wind moved a little stronger here.

Velithra crossed her arms slightly.

"Cold?" Kai asked.

"A little."

He hesitated for half a second—then stepped closer, instinctively letting his arm rest around her.

Not awkward.

Not forced.

Just natural.

She leaned into him without thinking.

A drop of rain landed on Kai's sleeve.

Then another.

Velithra looked up.

"It's starting."

But it wasn't real rain yet.

Just scattered drops.

Not enough to run from.

Not enough to stay dry.

They stood there anyway.

"You want to go?" Kai asked.

Velithra shook her head.

"Not yet."

The drops came a little faster now.

Still light.

Still gentle.

Kai laughed quietly.

"We're going to regret this in five minutes."

"Probably," she said.

But neither of them moved.

Velithra tilted her head slightly, watching the sky.

"There's something about moments like this," she said.

Kai looked at her. "Standing in almost rain?"

She smiled faintly.

"Right before something fully happens."

He thought about that.

"The in-between."

"Yeah."

Kai looked around.

Everything felt paused.

Like the world hadn't decided what it was going to be yet.

Clear.

Or storm.

Stay.

Or change.

He looked back at her.

"Feels familiar," he said.

Velithra met his eyes.

It did.

The rain picked up just enough to matter now.

Drops tapping against the ground.

Soft, steady.

Kai laughed again.

"Okay, now we should probably move."

Velithra didn't.

She stepped slightly in front of him instead.

Kai blinked. "What are you doing?"

She didn't answer right away.

Just looked at him.

Really looked.

Rain starting to fall between them.

"You're leaving soon," she said quietly.

The words weren't sudden.

But they felt heavier here.

Kai's expression softened.

"Yeah."

Velithra took a small breath.

"Then I don't want to keep waiting for the 'right moment' for everything."

His heart picked up slightly.

"Velithra—"

She stepped closer.

Close enough that the space between them almost disappeared.

Rain falling softly around them now.

"I just don't want to hesitate anymore," she said.

Kai didn't speak.

Didn't move away.

Didn't overthink.

Because for once—

There was no need to.

Velithra closed the distance first.

Not rushed.

Not uncertain.

Just honest.

Kai met her halfway.

And the moment happened—

simple, quiet, real—

as the rain finally began to fall properly around them.

When they pulled back, neither of them spoke right away.

They didn't need to.

Because this time—

Nothing was unspoken.

Kai let out a small breath, almost laughing.

"Okay," he said softly.

Velithra looked at him.

"That definitely wasn't on the list."

She smiled, rain still catching in her hair.

"Some things shouldn't be planned."

He nodded.

"Yeah."

And standing there in the rain—

They both knew—

This was one of the moments they'd never forget.
