Chapter 313 - Chapter 313: A New Look

Before every new season begins, the league compiles a schedule strength ranking. Based on the previous year's final standings, each team is assigned a score, and a list of strengths and weaknesses is compiled.

For example, the overall strength of the San Francisco 49ers' opponents this year is calculated, and the difficulty of their schedule is determined. After the calculations, the 32 teams are ranked to see which team is the unluckiest and has to face a string of strong opponents.

From a probabilistic perspective, the Super Bowl winner each year will have a relatively more difficult schedule because, according to the fourth point of the schedule arrangement, they will likely have to play against at least two other division champions in the new season, which is playoff-level difficulty.

Strong teams play strong teams, and weak teams play weak teams. This intensified competition is the fundamental reason why every NFL game is so exciting. Naturally, the task of defending the Super Bowl is incredibly difficult. Historically, only seven teams have successfully defended their title: the Green Bay Packers, Miami Dolphins, Pittsburgh Steelers, San Francisco 49ers, Dallas Cowboys, Denver Broncos, and New England Patriots.

As for a three-peat, there has never been one.

In the 2011 season, after the fourth week of the regular season, only the Green Bay Packers and the Detroit Lions remained undefeated. This is the most direct proof.

In the fierce competition of the NFL, no team can afford to be complacent. Most of the time, even when they give it their all, they are not guaranteed to win. Every victory requires them to fight with all their might.

The entire season only has 16 games, but the difficulty is no less than that of any other team sport's entire season.

Because of the unique system and playoff rules, every team's situation is different each year, and even changes after each week's game. Therefore, the NFL's official website is very busy after each week's games.

For teams, the work of summarizing the previous game's gains and losses and preparing for the next game will be carried out in an orderly manner until the end of the season. The same is true for the NFL's official website. After each week's games, they need to select the NFC and AFC players of the week, compile player injury reports, and analyze the changes in all the teams' strengths.

Since the NFL doesn't have a points-based ranking system and the strength comparison isn't so clear after each week's games, the official NFL website releases a weekly power ranking to give a simple summary and analysis of each team, and to a certain extent, provide some explanations for the direction of the playoffs.

This power ranking is relatively subjective. The official NFL website invites a professional analyst to write the commentary each year, and the analyst is different every year. Since it's only one analyst's opinion, subjectivity is unavoidable. But overall, it still represents the official stance of the NFL and has some reference value for players and teams.

This year, the official power rankings are being written by Elliot Harrison, a relatively young analyst who is only 29 years old. In the NFL, most analysts are over 40. Being 35 is considered very young, so Elliot, who is not even 30, is practically like a high school student in the professional world, which has caused a lot of controversy.

However, League Commissioner Roger Goodell gave Elliot his firm support. The reason is simple: they need young blood like Elliot to reach people on social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, and attract more young people to watch the games. In the end, it's all about promotion, exposure, and profit.

After all the games of the fourth week of the regular season were over, Elliot immediately published his analysis of the power rankings on the official website.

The Green Bay Packers rightfully ranked first. The fully powered-up Aaron Rodgers is still considered the best candidate for this year's regular season MVP and the most powerful contender for the Super Bowl. This is the fourth consecutive week that the Packers have topped the power rankings, a testament to their strong momentum.

Following closely behind were the Detroit Lions, who were also undefeated after four games. This team has shattered countless expectations this year. The New England Patriots, after defeating the Oakland Raiders this week, climbed back to third place, still showing powerful fighting strength.

In fourth place was the San Francisco 49ers!

"I know, I know. Everyone's going to say I'm crazy. Where are the Ravens? The Steelers? The Saints? The Bills? But I'm giving my respect to Lu Ke. This undrafted Chinese-American rookie quarterback is proving himself with every game, proving that he is the king who can lead the 49ers to victory!

To those fans who are so unhappy with the 49ers' fourth-place ranking (yes, Seattle Seahawks, I'm talking to you), let's take a look at Lu Ke's stats this week: 25 of 35 passes completed for 302 yards, three touchdowns, zero interceptions, sacked twice, a quarterback rating of 126.08, and a PFF score of 1.6.

These are the stats Lu Ke delivered. In four games, he has 14 touchdowns and one interception. This performance once again reminds us of Kurt Warner's sudden emergence in the 1999 season. He has had a quarterback rating of over 100 for four consecutive weeks, has thrown three or more touchdowns in a game for four consecutive weeks, and has led the San Francisco 49ers to victory for four consecutive weeks.

Even in this week's loss, they still fought tirelessly until the last moment.

There is no doubt that the current San Francisco 49ers, under the leadership of Jim Harbaugh, are not only showcasing the spectacular West Coast offense but also showing an unyielding spirit in desperate situations. While they still need to be tested by more teams in the league, this current team—with a steadily improving defense, an aggressive offense, and a solid special teams—has truly given the city of San Francisco hope of making the playoffs for the first time in eight years.

So, yes, for this week's fourth place, I chose the San Francisco 49ers."

The weekly power rankings may not dictate the outcome of games, but they do reflect the official view of a team's competitiveness.

In the first three weeks of the season, even though the San Francisco 49ers kept winning, the league didn't give them much attention. In the first week, among the 16 winning teams, the 49ers were only ranked tenth. It's hard to believe, given that Lu Ke threw five touchdowns in that game and won by a large margin. In the second week, among all the teams on a winning streak, the 49ers were still only ranked sixth.

Last week, only four teams had a three-game winning streak, and the 49ers were ranked fifth, even behind the Baltimore Ravens, who had lost one game.

This week, the San Francisco 49ers reached their highest ranking of the season, fourth! They have truly made a breakthrough. After losing a game, their ranking didn't drop but instead rose, surpassing the Baltimore Ravens, who also have a 3-1 record after defeating the New York Jets this week, reaching a new high in the power rankings.

What does this mean? It's not just the recognition from Elliot. It's also official recognition from the league. At least, on the official NFL website, the San Francisco 49ers have gradually transformed. They are no longer an underdog team, their strength has been initially recognized, and they have truly entered the public eye.

This week, there were as many as nine teams with a 3-1 record, and Elliot placed the San Francisco 49ers fourth on the overall list. Among teams with the same record, they were only behind the New England Patriots, which is undoubtedly a huge breakthrough.

As the humorous commentary in Elliot's analysis stated, people can continue to be skeptical. The young offense led by Lu Ke still needs to prove itself, and those harsh racists can continue to believe that Asian players cannot play football well. But the fact is, no one should ignore this team, and no one should ignore Lu Ke.

In the world of competitive sports, discrimination and provocation will never disappear, and strength will always be the best way to fight back. Both the San Francisco 49ers and Lu Ke are moving forward in the 2011 season one step at a time, and they are on the right track.

In fact, besides Elliot, the attention on Lu Ke is indeed gradually heating up.

Currently, Lu Ke is the only quarterback in the league who can be compared to Aaron Rodgers, simply based on his quarterback rating.

While quarterbacks like Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Joe Flacco, Philip Rivers, Ben Roethlisberger, Eli Manning, and Matt Stafford have all delivered impressive stats, the season has only just begun. There are indeed many MVP contenders.

But the data shows that Lu Ke is now the second-best quarterback in the league, only behind Aaron Rodgers. Perhaps data is not everything. There are many quarterbacks who put up good stats but lose games, and Cam Newton is one of them. But at least it proves that this quarterback is worth paying attention to.

As an undrafted rookie and a Chinese-American player, Lu Ke is gradually finding his footing in the league.

It is foreseeable that with such excellent stats, more provocations, curses, and doubts will follow. When a person becomes popular, they attract a lot of criticism. This is a simple truth. In the future, other teams will do more research and analysis on Lu Ke. This means that Lu Ke's career is finally slowly getting on track.

He is completely exposed to the spotlight, with no secrets. After shedding the mystery, everything will be scrutinized under a microscope. But whether it's positive attention or malicious provocation, this is a stage that every professional player must go through. No one is an exception.

Those who pass this stage have the potential to become superstars. Only time can sift out the diamonds from the sand. It will eventually be proven whether they are diamonds or sand. As for those who fail, they will soon be forgotten by history, and it won't even take a full season.

So, is Lu Ke the former or the latter?
