Chapter 453 - Chapter 453: One Hand Cannot Clap

What happened?

Lu Ke slumped on the grass, his hands on his knees, his body sore. A tightness in his chest and a blank look in his eyes, he scanned his surroundings. He saw the opponents celebrating their victory, the home fans in the stands cheering wildly, and the glaring score on the big screen: "16-10," with the home team's score first and the away team's second. The Baltimore Ravens won this tough matchup, and the San Francisco 49ers had to face a two-game losing streak this season.

Although sports are a game of wins and losses, and victory and defeat are objective realities; although the game between the 49ers and the Ravens was a toss-up, and any result would have been normal; although the difference between winning and losing in the NFL is a fine line—no one likes to lose.

In the final drive, the Baltimore Ravens' defense still didn't let up. They first successfully defended a third down, and then, facing the San Francisco 49ers' choice to go for it on fourth-and-three, they snuffed out the 49ers' comeback with a clean and decisive sack, securing the victory for themselves. The player who made the sack and ended the game was once again the soul of the Ravens' defense, Ray Lewis.

Throughout the game, this was Lewis's fourth personal sack and the defense's ninth. A total of nine! The Baltimore Ravens' defense threw the San Francisco 49ers' entire offensive line into a blender, tearing them to pieces. They could do whatever they wanted, coming and going freely. Four sacks in the first half and five in the second half, and that wasn't all.

In addition, they forced Lu Ke to throw the ball in a hurry three times, either spiking it or throwing it out of bounds to avoid a sack and a loss of yards, or a hurried pass that could lead to an interception. They created pressure five times, forcing Lu Ke to complete passes in a hurry, and made two effective hits that disrupted Lu Ke's throwing motion. This was just the pressure put on Lu Ke alone.

As for the entire 49ers' offense, the Ravens' defensive front also made 14 effective tackles, stopping the running backs' progress and immediately tackling the receivers after they made a catch to prevent them from gaining a lot of yards. This performance was almost comparable to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Pittsburgh Steelers in their prime, where they won the game purely on defense.

After being sacked, Lu Ke sat on the grass for a long time before getting up. He tried to get away, and he tried to find an opportunity, but the offensive line was torn apart too quickly. Almost as soon as the ball was snapped, there was a gap on the blind side. He really didn't have much space or time. To make matters worse, his special abilities were all used up: two uses of "Absolute Steps" and one use of "Iron Skin, Steel Bones." He was completely at a dead end. Thinking back, it seemed like he had no other choice but to surrender.

This thought made him feel lost, angry, and even humiliated.

...

"This was not the San Francisco 49ers' game." When giving his summary of the game, Teddy said what he thought. It was the simplest and most helpless sentence. A bitter smile appeared on his face. If the losses to the Philadelphia Eagles and the Arizona Cardinals had a little bit of luck involved and the outcome was a close call, then in this game, the San Francisco 49ers were on the defensive the entire time and had very few opportunities.

Kirk nodded in agreement. "You can tell that the Baltimore Ravens were very well prepared for this game. John Harbaugh completely stifled Jim Harbaugh's offensive tactics. The front-line collisions were not only fierce but also effective, completely suppressing the 49ers' versatility and flexibility in a head-on confrontation."

Power can overcome skill.

"According to the stats, the Ravens had nine sacks, which is the highest number of sacks in a single game this season. As for whether it's the highest in league history, we'll have to check the historical records."

"But personally, the number of sacks is just a number. More importantly, the Ravens' front-line defensive strategy was undoubtedly successful. With strong pressure, strong blitzing, and strong tackling, they brought their entire defensive line forward, compressing the 49ers' offensive space as much as possible. Even without sacks, they still had the upper hand on defense."

"From a tactical standpoint, there's no secret to it. The Cincinnati Bengals, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Detroit Lions have all used similar defensive tactics before. But the reason the Ravens were successful is that their players had the ability to follow through and execute it to the end."

"Ray Lewis, Haloti Ngata, and Terrell Suggs—these three Pro Bowl-level players turned the defensive coordinator's tactics into reality, holding their opponents in a vise grip from the first minute of the game to the last. Unfortunately, this time, Lu Ke couldn't save the day."

After analyzing the reasons for the Baltimore Ravens' success, Kirk's focus shifted to the San Francisco 49ers. "In the past few games, the San Francisco 49ers have successfully made several comebacks in crucial moments. The reason for this is not only Lu Ke's boldness, composure, and correct decisions as a quarterback in desperate situations."

"It's also because the team gave him enough support. Logan Newman and Ted Ginn, as the primary receivers, performed exceptionally well. Michael Crabtree and Vernon Davis also made some great catches, and Marcus Lynch was a surprise weapon."

"But in this game, Lu Ke was carrying the entire team by himself."

"You can tell that the Thursday night game had a big impact on the young San Francisco 49ers. The players' performance was too impatient. They were eager to prove themselves and show what they could do, but it caused their performance to be inconsistent, and they were never able to provide effective support for their quarterback."

"There's no need to mention the offensive line's terrible performance. Aside from center Jonathan Goodwin, the other players were a mess. And the receivers' performance was also far from excellent. The drops, running routes, and timing issues were countless. In the second half, they tried to improve, but their emotions were still too volatile."

"We can look at a set of stats. The 49ers had 13 yellow flags and lost a total of 125 yards. On the other side, the Ravens had five yellow flags and only lost 45 yards."

"In addition, the 49ers' receiving corps had a total of five drops, which ruined some great opportunities. Besides that, there were at least four verbal conflicts on the field during the game, and both sides' players were fired up."

"The young and spirited 49ers' offense paid the price for their youth. From the offensive line to the receivers and the running backs, they were never able to provide effective support. But even in this situation, Lu Ke still had an impressive passing performance: 27 completions on 41 attempts for 193 yards, with one touchdown and no interceptions."

"Compared to his last performance, Lu Ke had found his rhythm again and fought until the end, but unfortunately, he didn't get the support of his teammates. They couldn't win the game with just a quarterback. The final score was '16-10.' The San Francisco 49ers were only behind by two field goals. This was a very, very close game. Unfortunately, the 49ers weren't the ones smiling at the end."

One hand cannot clap.

All of Kirk's commentary can be summarized in this one simple sentence. Maybe it's a bit biased to say that because a team is a whole, and everyone gets the credit for a win, so everyone must also share the blame for a loss. But it is undeniable that the San Francisco 49ers' offense did not have a convincing performance today. The league has discussed before that a night game is special. It's a grand stage that can easily make people lose their way. It's highly likely that players will perform poorly, and only a small number of players can perform exceptionally well. The young San Francisco 49ers paid that price.

After just suffering a loss, the young offense was eager to prove themselves, but they became even more impatient. They knew the root of the problem and the seriousness of the situation, but they couldn't find a good solution. They just charged forward blindly, hitting a brick wall and losing the game. Growth always comes at a price.

But for Lu Ke, it was difficult to accept. In the last game, he lost because of his own mistakes. It was not only the first time he had lost a chance at a comeback, but it was also the first time he had personally thrown away such an opportunity. He had to shoulder the responsibility and fulfill his duties as a captain. In this game, however, it was even more frustrating. He kept trying, but it was like being trapped in a cocoon, pushing and shoving, but never finding a solution. They never even saw a glimmer of hope. They were behind the entire game, on the defensive the entire time, and then they just cleanly lost the game.

Anger, an uncontrollable anger. After the initial confusion and shock of losing the game, the fire of anger started to burn fiercely. He sat there not because of injury or pain, but because he was suppressing his anger. He didn't know if he could continue to suppress it. But in the end, he still had to stand up. He walked to the middle of the field to shake hands with Joe Flacco and John Harbaugh. He maintained his composure and congratulated them kindly, and then he turned and started walking toward the locker room.

As he walked, his anger started to bubble up. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Mike Iupati hurrying over, with a look of guilt on his face, as if he was about to apologize. A surge of rage flared up, and Lu Ke finally couldn't control himself. The emotions erupted like a volcano. He slapped Iupati's right hand away fiercely. "Damn it! Get lost!" This was the first time Lu Ke had lost his temper. Iupati was truly scared and stood there, a bit at a loss. But at that moment, Lu Ke wasn't in the mood to care about what others were thinking. The surging anger had to be let out. So, he suddenly stood up and roared at Iupati, "Get lost!" He then stormed off toward the locker room.
