Pentos lived on rumors, and that week the whispers were about a killer from Braavos.
Not just any killer â one who could walk into a guarded room without being noticed and leave with every man inside dead, without anyone knowing how he got in or out.
Alex had no proof the rumors were true, but the description was too specific to ignore.
A man with no distinctive face.
A man who could be anyone.
If the Archive could take what this assassin had, Alex's infiltration options would expand beyond anything the city had seen.
The Sight in the Market
The first time Alex saw him, it was by accident.
The morning crowd in the Spice Quarter was dense, merchants shouting over each other, oxen pulling carts heavy with sacks of cinnamon and pepper. Alex was moving between stalls, buying nothing, just letting his Pack Instinct sweep for unusual motion patterns.
There â a ripple in the flow.
A hooded man moved past two city guards without either glancing at him. Not ignoring him â not even registering him. Alex felt the odd tug in his senses, as though his own mind wanted to forget the man had been there.
It was a subtle manipulation.
Not invisibility. Not magic in the loud, flashy sense. Something else.
Alex followed.
The Shadowing
The man's route was erratic â a turn through a tannery, a pause at a well, a stop to speak with a fruit seller. Each time, his face seemed slightly different depending on the angle. The nose was longer, or the chin more narrow, or the jawline softer.
By the time they reached the quieter streets near the east wall, Alex's suspicion was a certainty.
This was the assassin from the rumors.
And if Alex wanted his ability, he'd need to get close â close enough to touch.
Setting the Trap
A direct grab was suicide.
So Alex staged an "accident."
He sent a mental nudge through Beast Mind-Link, calling one of his street dogs to dart across the man's path. As the assassin sidestepped, Alex stumbled out of a side alley, colliding shoulder-first.
The contact was brief.
But the Archive didn't need more than that.

The man didn't even slow down. By the time Alex glanced over his shoulder, the assassin had melted into the crowd like smoke.
First Test
Back in the loft, Alex stood in front of a cracked mirror.
He closed his eyes, focused on the fruit seller's wrinkled face from earlier, and willed the system to activate.

The change was painless, but unnerving. His skin shifted under an invisible hand, cheekbones sinking, eyes narrowing, mouth tightening. When he opened his eyes, a stranger looked back.
The voice was still his. The hair was still his. But the face â the face was someone else's entirely.
When the timer ended, the features melted back to his own.
Refining the Use
Alex practiced for three days.
Market vendor, to blend into crowds.
Port guard, to pass unchallenged at the docks.
An unremarkable dockworker, to vanish into alleyways after shadowing meetings.
Limitations were clear â fifteen minutes went fast. The inability to change his voice meant careful word choice. But even with those limits, the infiltration potential was enormous.
First Mission with the Mask
The real test came when Rhaezar sent him to acquire certain letters from a rival Magister's office.
Alex chose the face of a trusted courier he'd observed earlier that day. He entered the outer office without challenge, nodded to the clerk, and stepped into the private study.
The letters were in a locked drawer. Alex used a thin strip of steel to pop the latch, copied each with quick strokes, and was halfway out the door before the real courier arrived â confused, but too late.
By the time suspicion arose, Alex had already shifted back and slipped into a public tavern, unreadable in the crowd.

First infiltration success without violence.
Reputation with Rhaezar: Increased â "Proven Discreet."
