Chapter 4 - Bad doggy! Bad!

'Maybe they didn't notice I'm here.' - I thought, without any confidence at all in any of those words.

As if the universe itself was mocking me, the damn dogs started making threatening sounds, hissing at the door.

At this point, I let out the breath I hadn't even noticed I was holding - 'This won't go my way, will it?'

Like an answer to my thoughts, I heard something collide heavily against my front door, followed by the sounds of frenzied scratching, like someone or something desperately trying to get in.

Me: Give me a break! ;-;

World: Break time is over! umu

I cautiously moved near the windows again, and my worst fears were confirmed — they were attempting to break in. Even worse, all of them had blood on their snouts. I wasn't their first victim.

But peeking again had been a mistake. One of them noticed me standing there and, after giving a loud howl, it charged straight at me, jumping just in time to dive through the center of the window, breaking the glass and tearing through the surrounding wooden frame.

"Motherfucker..." - I cursed under my breath after narrowly getting away from the glass shards that went everywhere. My hands made their way toward the sword's scabbard — the real sword's scabbard this time. These little shits would pay for damaging the house.

With eyes blazing with untold fury, I drew my sword in one swift motion and delivered a devastating slash to the stunned, furred invader, cutting through its neck like it was made of butter.

Keep in mind this was no simple sword, but a family heirloom that I greatly admired. Its edge was kept razor-sharp, as I always made sure to perform the proper maintenance.

So, without wasting any more time, I pulled the door wide open — to the confusion of two evil doggies that stumbled right through, almost falling flat on their ugly canine faces, in a failed — or, in a way, very successful — attempt to bring down the door.

I stepped forward in fury, swiping my sword through the open mouth of the nearest coyote, sending the upper half of its head straight into the wall on the right side.

Then, using strength I honestly didn't even know I had, I hurled a downward punch to the top of the second punk's head just as it tried to jump onto me, sending him in a violent collision with the wooden floor below, finishing it off with a stab through the back of its neck.

Just like that, their numbers had halved, meaning there were three more bad doggies to go.

Not losing my rhythm, I rushed out of the house with sword in hand, eyes locked on my next target.

Making my way toward the last remaining coyotes, I somehow managed to dodge the first two as they lunged at me by skidding on the floor, barely managing to keep myself from falling on my back.

Just as the third coyote jumped, I felt a sense of danger and was able to ready my sword, stabbing right through the back of its throat as it landed on top of me.

"Shit!" - Sensing danger again, I mustered every bit of my strength to throw the damned dog off of me, letting go of the sword that had lodged itself way too deeply into its throat.

I then rolled across the scalding ground, just in time to watch another coyote land where I had just been, while the last remaining furry menace tried to circle around me.

"Haaa... I'll be damned..." - I cursed under my ragged breath, struggling to get back on my feet, brows furrowed as I endured the sharp pain from the various scratches I had received from both the coyotes and the ground while rolling around.

They then began to circle me, walking clockwise, keeping their distance, as I felt the scorching sun beat down on my back.

'I really shouldn't have worn black clothing, and for that I blame the great air conditioning system in my room.' - Despite the situation, I couldn't help but have such thoughts as I felt a bead of sweat run down my temple and into my eyes. That shit burned badly, but I just couldn't afford to close my eyes now.

Those bastards were waiting, watching until I made a mistake and let my guard down. Honestly, I don't think only the two of them are nearly enough to kill me, even if I am unarmed.

Can they harm me? Absolutely. But kill me? Unlikely.

Even so, I wasn't about to get injured over nothing. So I got ready, waiting until one of them stood just a little past the direct path between me and my sword — before making a run for it.

I dashed, and just as the coyote directly in front of me — whom I will call bad doggy 1 — lunged at me, I hit him with a well-timed spinning kick that cleared the way toward the sword and allowed me to keep track of bad doggy 2, who was now sprinting my way.

Too bad, sucker! I hurriedly grabbed the sword and pulled with all my strength, managing to dislodge it with some effort — just in time to swing at the now-airborne bad doggy 2, slashing at his face.

Unfortunately, I had no time to aim my attack, so it managed to survive, though at a great cost, as it now let out some pitiful whimpers of pain.

With my now bloodied sword in hand, I stood against the two little shits, and without giving them any time to recover, I dashed at bad doggy 1, who was back on his paws, stabbing straight into his right eye.

I twisted the sword and pulled it back, moving toward the last standing coyote and dispatching it after a couple more slashes.

This was really draining. I was exhausted. But as I heard some noises in the distance, I forced myself to drag out the bodies of the coyotes that had died inside the house, closed the door, and made a makeshift barricade on the windows and entrance.

Back inside, I gave up on any more adventuring outside for now. Looking around at the bloodstains I could only think bitterly - 'This will be one hell of a clean up...'

I took a quick bath and tended to my wounds, even if they were just a couple of shallow scratches. Putting on some clean clothes and with nothing better to do for the time being, I looked online to see if anything new had happened.

Now that I think about it, I have to appreciate the local internet — not even the end of the world seems to bring their network down. What a rarity!
