Chapter 357 - Chapter 355: The Soul of the Sand

"The battle for the throne is upon us! The Champions Cup!" the announcer bellows, his voice straining against the roar of the crowd. "This year's field truly lives up to the name. A swarm of international titans has descended upon Japan, challengers who once traded blows with our own legendary Mejiro Rampage. They are met by a wall of home-grown heroes, warriors, and kings. The time for talk is over; the hour of reckoning is here!"

They certainly know how to hype a crowd, I thought, watching from the booth. Then again, if you can't sell the drama, you've got no business on the mic. I looked down at the gate. I knew almost every runner down there personally. Part of me wanted to scream for my friends, but I had a job to do. Neutrality was the order of the day.

"The chimes of destiny are ringing! Japan versus the World! The gates are set... the tension is at a breaking point... and—THEY'RE OFF!"

The roar that erupted as the gates swung open was physical, a wall of sound that shook the commentary booth. It was the literal impact of two worlds colliding. As the pack thundered forward, a single white streak tore away from the rest, and I couldn't help but grin.

"Leading the charge is the Sand Super-Express herself—Amazing Dyna! Narita Eagle is hot on her heels, with Arm Drinks glued to her flank! The Sword Queen, Lady Saber, is moving up to challenge the lead, and A.P. Indy is right there with them! That's our lead group! Two lengths back, Lis Fleuve is biding her time!"

"They're moving exactly where we expected," I added, leaning into the mic. "But look at Dyna's speed. She's pushing a suicidal pace. It's a hybrid of my own high-octane style and Twin Turbo's 'all-or-nothing' sprint. On a Japanese dirt track, the cushioning is high enough that she might just be able to sustain this madness."

"At the very back of the pack, we see Stahl Armekore and Irene holding steady. How will the German standout, who challenged Rampage so fiercely in Dubai, navigate this chaos?"

"Her strengths are obvious," I said, "but countering them is the hard part. The world has its specialists, but let's see if anyone on this track has the answer."

Al's "trump card" wasn't weak—far from it. The problem was that at the world-class level, top-tier runners eventually find a way to neutralize "Zones" and "Domains." To win here, she would need to either overpower their resistance or evolve her strategy mid-race.

As they rounded the second corner and thundered into the backstretch, Dyna held a three-length lead. Drinks, Saber, and Indy formed a secondary wall of muscle, with Lis Fleuve stalking them like a shark. The mid-pack was a chaotic jumble of elite runners—Acht Acht, Tigre Turc, and the rest—all jostling for position.

Then, the rhythm broke.

As they approached the third corner, the pack began to shift. A microscopic gap opened in the center of the throng—a mistake born of the sheer pressure the international girls were exerting.

"Irene is making her move! She's diving right through the heart of the pack! But wait—Stahl Armekore is right behind her! She's launching an assault from the rear! But what's this?! The speed of the surrounding runners is dropping! Are they buckling under the sheer aura of the international legends?!"

So, you're playing your hand now, Al? I thought.

Down on the track, Al's eyes glowed with a cold, Teutonic light.

"My, my," Irene muttered beside her, "using your trump card this early? You're bolder than you look."

"Look who's talking," Al countered.

Al expanded her "Domain." She had realized that if she didn't force the pack open now, she'd be buried. She bet everything on this moment. Simultaneously, Irene sensed the shift and used the opening Al created to catapult herself toward the leaders, her own aura flaring to life.

"We're hitting the final stretch! Amazing Dyna is still in the lead! Can she hold? Does she have anything left?!"

Suddenly, a chill swept through the stadium. A massive weight of pressure surged from the back of the field, a physical force that seemed to warp the very air.

"STAHL ARMEKORE! Armekore has surged to the front! My God, I've never seen anything like it—she accelerated so fast she practically vanished and reappeared in the lead!"

"That's because she did," I shouted. "She didn't just accelerate. She's evolved her Domain. For every 'heart' she captivates with her performance, she gains a burst of speed. She's feeding off the crowd's excitement!"

Al's voice rang out, clear even over the thundering hooves. "To all you Girls obsessed with the run... are you ready? Because I am! Welcome to the Showtime!"

She tore into the lead, looking for all the world like she was going to run away with it. But the Japanese queens weren't about to let their throne be taken so easily.

"This is it! Everything I have! STRONG-AMAZING DYNAAAA!"

"Witness the edge of my steel—SLAYER BLADE!"

"Hahaha! Yes! This is what I came for!" Drinks laughed, her eyes wide with manic joy. "If you're giving us a show, Al, then I'll be your co-star!"

It was the BC Classic all over again. A savage, beautiful pursuit. Al's solo lead lasted only seconds before the "Twin Engines of Japan" and the "White Irregular" were back on her throat.

"Saber, Dyna, and Drinks are back in the fight! It's a four-way dead heat! No, Lis Fleuve is coming up the slipstream! A.P. Indy is closing! Narita Eagle is giving it one last desperate kick! It's a wall of muscle and grit! Who will take the crown?! There's less than 100 meters to go!"

"Saber's gaining! Dyna's digging in! Drinks won't give an inch!" I screamed into the mic, my professional facade finally shattering. "Fleuve is using the draft! Indy's right there! Eagle, don't you dare give up! EVERYONE—RUN YOUR DAMN HEARTS OUT!"

"""""WE DON'T NEED YOU TO TELL US THAT!"""""

My roar acted like a spark in a powder keg. Every girl in that lead group—even those trapped in Al's Domain—found a final, hidden reservoir of strength. They weren't just racing for a trophy anymore; they were racing to prove they existed. The atmosphere was so thick with killing intent and competitive spirit it was almost suffocating.

And then—they hit the wire.

"The winner is—AMAZING DYNA! Amazing Dyna has done it! She follows up her February Stakes win with a victory in the Champions Cup! Stahl Armekore takes second by a whisker, Lady Saber third, Arm Drinks fourth, and Narita Eagle fifth! What a battle! The Super-Express has reclaimed her throne!"

"DYNA! DYNA! DYNA!"

The stadium shook with the chant. It was a roar that reached the heavens. Dyna stood on the track, drenched in sweat, chest heaving. She looked up at the sky and let out a scream of pure, unadulterated joy.

"YEEEEEESSSSSSSS!!!!!"

Character Profile: Mejiro Fantasy (Filly)

The 16th and final foal of Mejiro Rampage. Sired by the "Golden Experience," Grass Wonder.

The final child of Mejiro Rampage before her retirement from breeding. While there had been immense public pressure to sire her with Deep Impact, the "Rampage Camp" famously never paired her with the Sunday Silence line.

Fantasy's career was legendary. After a narrow 2nd-place finish in the Oka Sho, her team made the controversial decision to enter her in the Tokyo Derby. She silenced the critics by becoming the fourth filly in history to win the Derby.

She then set her sights on the world. Though she finished 2nd in her first attempt at the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (witnessing her stablemate Mejiro Pawn and the legendary Orfevre take the win), she returned the following year and conquered Longchamp. As Rampage's final daughter, she achieved the ultimate glory before retiring to the halls of history.

Partnered with jockey Yuka Take. She described Fantasy as a horse who was almost too relaxed and gentle in the stable, but possessed a "light-switch" temperament that transformed her into a demon the moment she stepped onto the track. Take frequently spoke of the profound joy she felt in finally bringing the Arc trophy home for the Mejiro family.
