Chapter 15 - Chapter 15: Debbie Grayson

[Next day]

With the American president confirming the existence of aliens and even expressing the willingness to let the aliens immigrate to earth, the people who thought it was a hoax or a distraction had no choice but to accept it.

It also did not help that most of the relevant world leaders essentially essentially said the same thing as the president of the United States.

Once again, such news and information brought a great deal of divisive controversy. Some of the citizens were not happy with the news, and soon, protests began.

Deborah Grayson, otherwise known as Debbie, had woken up today happy that most of her classes for the day were suddenly canceled, and she had hoped to have a free day to relax.

She had not bothered to read any further about why the classes were canceled. After all, being a student majoring in finance and accounting, she didn't need a reason not to go to class.

"Ugh just my luck"

She groaned from the back seat of a taxi, her arms folding in frustration at the awful Chicago traffic.

"I heard there's a protest going on"

The taxi driver informed her as he looked at her through the rear view mirror. He was a middle-aged man with a goatee.

"A protest? for what?"

"Haven't you been keeping up with the news? The president announced the aliens are real"

Debbie gave the man a look that told him she did not believe him, of course she saw the news about alien spaceships on the internet however as a final year Finance student she didn't have the time to be scrolling through the web so she had figured it was a hoax.

After all, it would not be the first time the government said something about aliens as a distraction.

"No I'm serious, look"

The driver pulled out his phone and showed her the video. Apparently, he had it saved on his phone.

"Oh!"

"Yeah it's crazy. The people are protesting against literal aliens immigrants, and I'm pretty sure similar protests are happening all over the world"

He explained, and Debbie couldn't help but lean back and let out a sigh. Honestly, it made sense.

The government was against immigrants already, so it made no sense why they'd accept literal aliens on American soil.

"Honestly I don't personally blame the protesters. Earth is already too crowded, with too many problems already, We don't need green skinned aliens being the 99th problem"

The driver expressed his opinion on the matter, his words rang true to Debbie, there were too many problems on earth and choosing to house aliens would only bring new issues to deal with however despite that, there was a part of her that was a little curious.

Aliens were a fictional concept that for decades have been a thing that could only exist in imagination. However, the arrival of Martian man turned that imagination into reality. Now, with the arrival of these new aliens, reality is becoming all the closer to fiction.

"Thinking about it, most people didn't like Martian man when he first debuted,"

"Of course they didn't, but at least he's doing something to contribute. He's a hero. I doubt these aliens are going to be anything except for leeches that want our resources"

Debbie couldn't help raise a brow. His words felt oddly charged for some reason.

"From what you showed me, the president seems sure the aliens are going to share their technology with us. That's a contribution"

The taxi began to slowly move forward once again, but it was at an incredibly slow pace, so slow that Debbie began to think she might spend all day in this traffic.

"Oh please, we sent men to the moon, it's only a matter of time before we make spaceships, we don't need these aliens and I don't believe for second they aren't here to invade our home"

The driver continued, his words making Debbie look at him with a look that told him he was speculating. It wasn't that she didn't see what he was saying, after all most alien movies depict aliens as invaders so she could see why he would feel that way but it seemed a little too over the top.

The aliens haven't even been seen yet. All there were just pictures of spaceships. It would make more sense if his concern was about the aliens bringing some type of virus of disease.

Nobody knows what kind of sicknesses exist outside of earth. So that would be a valid concern. Not to mention, if the aliens were here to invade, why haven't they attacked yet? They certainly have greater fire power compared to earth.

"Don't you think that's a little much, I mean, McDonald said the aliens will bring great advancement to our technology and science"

"Yeah great advancement that only the rich and wealthy will get to enjoy, think about. The aliens will not benefit us"

He countered her words and she hummed, honestly this wasn't a conversation she cared about at least not right now, she just wanted to go to a spar and have a relaxing day and not have to talk about such things. She won't be having a free day like this in a very long time, and she'd rather not spend it talking about aliens to some taxi driver.

'Ugh, should have just slept in'

She thought inwardly sinking into her seat, still though even though she did not want to talk about it, she was curious about what these aliens looked like. From the movies, they're always depicted to look inhuman with big eyes and weird skin.

With that thought in mind, her brain wondered how funny it would be to try and sell an alien a house, and they just have no idea what that is.

"Personally I think having aliens on Earth might be a good thing"

The driver seemed to fully turn his head to look at her, with an almost offended expression.

"I mean, come on, sure, the rich might monopolize the advanced tech the aliens bring, but you don't honestly believe we wouldn't at least get some benefit? Not only that, who is to say the aliens are even willing to cooperate with them?"

She spoke her position, she understood there was a risk of an invasion but she also understood, having aliens might bring in more benefits than just technology, they might have interesting ways of thinking, architecture and even art.

It's also possible they could have something to end world hunger or come up with new ways of crime prevention. They might also contribute greatly to the labor force.

There was a plethora of things the aliens could bring, one cannot always focus on the bad side of things, and they must also be able to recognize the positive. The opposite was true as well.

"Earth is for Earthlings. If we start allowing literal aliens in here, then it will no longer be out home"

"OK but nobody has said the aliens are going to be staying forever, and we have no information on what is actually going on."

She continued, her words were true, so far there has been very little information shared, as such it was a little too early to make judgments on the matter.During their conversation, the taxi continued to move ever so slowly, inching closer and closer to where Debbie was going.

It wasn't until approximately twenty minutes later that the taxi Debbie was on finally seemed to be getting ahead, and she saw some protesters on the side of the road, She didn't see the main group of protesters, as they seemed to have moved further ahead, hence the reason why the taxi had actually started to pick up speed.

The protesters she did see were the stragglers, the people who did not walk or march fast enough to keep up with the main group or the ones who sat down to take a break.

Some of them were holding up signs that wrote "a human world, for humans only" or "Earth for Earthlings", some of the signs had illustrations of the typical alien head, with green skin and big eyes and drawn over that image was a big x, To show the aliens were not welcomed.

As the taxi drove past these protesters, Debbie wondered about the aliens even more. Her mind conjured up images of what they could possibly look like.

Looking at the protesters, she couldn't help but feel like she might be amongst the few people who are actually curious about the aliens and kind of want to see them up close. In any case, this situation told her she needed to watch the news more often these days

....

A/N: I plan to have Debbie make appearances every now and then. She'll most be used as reaction characters showing how Earth is adjusting to the aliens and how the aliens are affecting the everyday life of the average person. It will probably be a while because she meets Thragg.

also, Debbie is the best girl and the best mom of the entire invincible universe , and I stand on that!

(Also I made a huge error, this story is set before Canon, meaning before before the 2020s or 2010s yet in past chapters I mentioned social media and Tok tik, things that weren't so easily accessible in the early 2000s and probably did exist in the 90s. Well I'm rolling with it, its gonna bother me but I can't change it now.)
