Chapter 119 - The Avengers' First Assembly

"Sir, take a look at this."

Coulson said, placing a stack of prepared photos in front of Nick Fury.

The Director glanced at them.

In a massive "meteor crater," a square hammer lay quietly at an angle.

There were wide shots, close-ups, and detailed views from every angle.

The photos clearly displayed the hammer's full appearance to Fury.

Nick Fury couldn't help but nod inwardly.

The hammer in the photos was indeed highly similar to Thor's hammer, Mjolnir, from the mythological tales.

So, there's basically no doubt now. That hammer should be Thor's Mjolnir.

"We interviewed some local residents. Some of them reported seeing lightning and thunder in the sky at night, as if a meteor had fallen."

"The location and time match the appearance of the hammer. We can confirm that the 'meteor' everyone's talking about is this hammer."

"Our people have sealed off the base and are trying to retrieve the hammer."

"But it's very strange. The hammer seems to be very heavy; no one can lift it."

"We've tried all sorts of methods, but nothing works."

Seeing Nick Fury take his eyes off the photo, Coulson continued to brief him.

Heavy?

This hammer is more than just heavy!

If the hammer were really that heavy, how could the impact crater be so small?

Nick Fury didn't explain much to Coulson, but these thoughts flashed through his mind.

"Besides the hammer?"

Nick Fury, with his one eye, looked at Coulson and asked him this question again.

According to the diary, it wasn't just Thor's Mjolnir that had fallen in New Mexico, but also Thor himself.

And the task that Nick Fury had given Coulson wasn't just to keep an eye on the hammer; he also needed to keep an eye on Jane Foster, a key figure.

"On the night the hammer landed, Jane Foster's car hit a homeless man, if that's what you're asking, sir."

Coulson thought for a moment and reported to Nick Fury.

After receiving Nick Fury's order, Coulson had naturally been secretly watching Jane Foster.

Truthfully, Coulson didn't see anything special about Jane Foster at all.

She was just an ordinary scientist, nothing more.

In Coulson's opinion, there was nothing about her that warranted Nick Fury's attention.

So, Coulson wasn't sure what the Director wanted to know, and he could only guess as he reported the events surrounding the hammer's fall to the Director.

"A vagrant?"

Nick Fury remained impassive on the surface, but inwardly he was stirred. Thor!

Everything was just as the diary had "predicted." Thor had also descended from the sky!

So, without a doubt, next he would be sent to a mental institution by Jane Foster, right?

"Coulson, you go to New Mexico immediately."

Quickly putting aside those thoughts, Nick Fury issued an order to Coulson, "I want you to personally guard that hammer. Don't take your eyes off it until I get there."

"Sir, are you also going to New Mexico?"

Coulson was still quite surprised by this.

What exactly was that hammer that had fallen from the sky, that it was so highly valued by his superior?

That he had to go personally?

However, Nick Fury obviously didn't intend to reveal much to Coulson, so Coulson naturally didn't ask further and immediately took his orders.

"Barton."

After Coulson left, Nick Fury then called Hawkeye, Barton, over and gave him another very important order.

"There's a mental patient admitted to the hospital in a small town in New Mexico. I want you to get there as quickly as possible, find him, and keep an eye on him."

Thor's identity was so important that the Director had to entrust it to his own people who had been certified by the diary.

Considering Barton's special skills, yes, Barton also had special skills. His eyes had actually been modified.

Not only did he possess far-sighted vision that ordinary people didn't, but his visual acuity was also far beyond that of ordinary people.

It can also adapt to various environments, seeing clearly in sunlight, darkness, fog, and so on.

It's even similar to the Byakugan of the Hyuga clan, possessing a wider field of vision than ordinary people.

Of course, it can't reach the Byakugan's 360 degrees, but the movie did show Hawkeye looking forward while shooting a target to the side.

That wasn't Hawkeye showing off; he could actually see to the side while looking forward.

Considering all these factors, Hawkeye Barton was naturally the perfect choice to keep an eye on Thor.

"Besides that, is there anything else I need to do?"

Hawkeye Barton asked again; this mission was too simple for someone of his caliber.

"No, you just need to keep an eye on him. Don't do anything else."

"Report anything that happens to me immediately."

"Don't tell anyone about this, except me."

Nick Fury shook his head, then seriously instructed Barton about a few more things.

Barton's expression tightened slightly, and he made a mental note.

It seemed that no matter who that mental patient was, they were a very important person.

"Understood, sir!"

Hawkeye Barton wasted no time and immediately began to carry out the orders.

"Natasha, get Red Guardian. I'll be there in fifteen minutes."

Afterward, Nick Fury didn't idle around. He brought Black Widow and Red Guardian to the secret base where Captain America was recuperating.

Bang, bang, bang!

When Nick Fury and the others arrived, Captain America was hitting a sandbag, seemingly oblivious to their presence.

Each punch caused the sandbag to swing wildly, far beyond what was normal.

Bang!

With a final, powerful punch, Captain America completely destroyed the sandbag.

"This… this… Natasha, could he be the person I think he is?"

Before Nick Fury could say anything, Red Guardian became agitated, his words tumbling over each other, his eyes wide.

He'd always styled himself as the Soviet version of Captain America, constantly boasting to anyone who would listen about how he'd fought Captain America and even knocked his shield away.

And now, who could have imagined that he'd actually meet Captain America?

So this guy wasn't dead after all!

Initially, Red Guardian was a little resistant, a little unwilling to join the Avengers.

But the moment he saw Captain America, he felt a lot better.

"Relax, how did I not know you were a fan of the Captain?"

"And come on, you're getting on in years!"

Natasha couldn't help but roll her eyes at Red Guardian.

"Fan? Come on, he's my greatest opponent, no, I'm his greatest opponent! This is the joy between sworn enemies, sworn enemies, you understand? Finally, I've met an opponent who can stand against me..."

Red Guardian started rambling on and on, explaining to Natasha.

"Excuse me, have we met before?"

Captain America heard what Red Guardian said and couldn't help but glance at the guy with curiosity.

What's with this guy's weird way of talking?

"You don't recognize me?"

"You actually... don't recognize me?"

Red Guardian pointed at his own nose, seemingly unable to accept it.

"We can catch up later."

Nick Fury stepped forward at this moment, walked solemnly to Captain America, and said, "Captain, the critical moment I told you about has arrived. I'm sorry, but I think your retirement might have to be paused for a few days."

"Yes, you did tell me about that critical moment."

Captain America looked directly at Nick Fury, "But even now, you still haven't told me what it is."

"Captain, I've received reliable intel…"

"Forget it."

Nick Fury was only halfway through his sentence when Captain America cut him off, "You don't need to say anything. With the current size of S.H.I.E.L.D., you don't need me at all."

"No, Captain, we need you very much."

Nick Fury emphasized heavily before seriously explaining the threat New Mexico was facing to Captain America.

Captain America hadn't originally intended to get involved, but when he heard that New Mexico was facing a supernatural event, with the entire town potentially being destroyed, he couldn't just stand by.

This was Captain America we're talking about!

The most righteous and upright person Marvel had ever created.

So, in the end, Captain America, along with Black Widow and Red Guardian, boarded a helicopter heading to New Mexico.

All the way there, Red Guardian was like he was on speed, constantly boasting to Captain America and trying to make a big impression.

But Captain America, who had only recently been revived, wasn't interested in Red Guardian at all.

In this atmosphere, the armed helicopter began to rush towards New Mexico at top speed.

However, except for Nick Fury, no one on the helicopter knew that the bald man had also secretly dispatched a team from the Whiplash Task Force, who had secretly infiltrated New Mexico.

That's right.

The Whiplash Task Force was finally assembled by Nick Fury.

Although progress was slower due to the pressure from Hydra, yes, it was finally assembled.

Boom!

Just like that.

Amidst the sound of the helicopter's rotors.

I don't know how long it took, but the armed helicopter landed near the crater.

The entire site had long been cordoned off by S.H.I.E.L.D. A large number of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents guarded the perimeter, preventing the town residents who wanted to watch the excitement from getting close.

"Let me try. I can definitely do it."

An old man with white hair, so old he could barely stand, was earnestly persuading a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, "I plan to use chains to tie that hammer to a car. That should be able to pull it!"

Hmm?

This guy?

Nick Fury, who hadn't even glanced at the old man, couldn't help but take a look at him after hearing what he said.

This old man, could he be the "certain old gentleman" mentioned in the diary, the one who tried to pull the hammer with a vehicle?

That raises a question.

Is this "certain old gentleman" just a random person Satan mentioned casually, or is he someone extraordinary?

Otherwise, why would Satan specifically mention this "certain old gentleman"?

Nick Fury made his decision after a moment of thought.

Secretly investigate this certain old gentleman to see if he's up to anything.

"Director!"

While he was lost in thought, Coulson had already led several S.H.I.E.L.D. agents to Nick Fury, personally guiding Nick Fury inside.

"That's the hammer. I've already made a series of arrangements, and the temporary research center will be set up in three days at the latest."

"The relevant scientific personnel are already on their way. We don't know exactly what that hammer is before they arrive," Coulson explained to Nick Fury as he led the way.

Nick Fury naturally knew what the hammer was, but he didn't reveal anything to Coulson.

He simply walked up to the hammer and casually examined it.

After a few seconds, Nick Fury looked up, intending to leave.

He needed to meet with Barton and check on Thor.

"Sir, Stark is here, and he insists on coming in."

At that moment, a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent hurried over to Coulson and Nick Fury and reported in a low voice.

Stark?

Coulson was immediately surprised. What was that playboy doing here? There weren't any criminals for the Destroyer to take care of.

However, Nick Fury didn't seem surprised at all. He'd already met with Tony Stark and knew the playboy would come to New Mexico.

That was also the reason the Director had notified all the Avengers but hadn't contacted Tony Stark specifically.

"Bring him in."

Nick Fury gave the order without hesitation.

Soon, Tony Stark's cool figure appeared before everyone.

A bodyguard from the military was closely following him.

The bodyguard was holding a very cool-looking case.

"What box?"

It was none other than the portable armor Tony Stark developed, inspired by his notebook.

Mark V.

After learning that Hydra had listed him as a target for assassination, the playboy sought protection from the military and usually carried this portable armor with him.

After all, it was Hydra.

Although the Winter Soldier was dead, who knew if the enemy had any other extraordinary methods?

The playboy had to be cautious.

"Is this the hammer?"

"Really, no one can pick it up?"

"I don't believe in such mumbo jumbo!"

Tony Stark ignored everyone else and walked straight up to Mjolnir, grabbing hold of it.

Then, he put all his strength into it.

And he found out that, well, he, Tony, wasn't special either.

The hammer didn't look that big, but it was as heavy as a mountain, impossible to budge even a little.
