Chapter 21 - Adrian Mockery

The town did not sleep after Marcus's win. Conversations spilled from doorways and street corners. Some people spoke with admiration. Others with doubt. For Marcus the victory felt like proof that he still mattered. That he had not wasted everything.

Still Adrian's smile stayed with him.

It was the smile of a man who did not lose quietly.

Adrian had come back to town carrying everything Marcus did not have. Fame. Money. Confidence shaped by success. He was not just another opponent. He was a reminder of what Marcus could have been.

The next afternoon Marcus was walking home from practice when a black car slowed beside him. The window rolled down.

Adrian leaned out wearing sunglasses his elbow resting casually on the door.

"Good showing yesterday" Adrian said. "Didn't think your knees could still handle that."

Marcus stopped. "What do you want."

Adrian smiled. "What you want. Or who you want." His voice dropped. "Lena."

Marcus felt his jaw tighten. "Leave her out of this."

"I can't" Adrian replied calmly. "Her parents already see the future. Stability. Comfort. Everything they think she deserves. You know how it goes." He paused. "And you Marcus. What are you offering. A comeback story and a past you can't erase."

Marcus said nothing. His silence carried weight.

Adrian stepped out of the car. He stood tall relaxed fully aware of the attention drawing toward them. People slowed. Some stopped. A circle began to form.

"How about we settle it properly" Adrian said spreading his arms. "One on one. Old school. Let everyone see the difference between someone who had his time and someone who still owns it."

The crowd reacted instantly. Murmurs turned into excitement. Phones came out. The idea spread faster than sense.

Marcus clenched his fists. He hated the way Adrian spoke about Lena like a prize. But he also understood what Adrian was doing. This was not just about basketball. This was about humiliation.

He lifted his head. "Fine. We play."

The reaction was immediate. Cheers. Gasps. Adrian laughed.

"Tomorrow evening" Adrian said. "Town court. Let them all come."

He stepped back into his car then leaned out once more. "Bring everything you've got."

The car sped away leaving dust and noise behind.

That night Marcus sat on his bed the ball resting on his lap. He knew the truth. Adrian was younger. Stronger. Still active at the highest level. Marcus had rebuilt himself but scars remained.

This was not about being better.

It was about standing his ground.

A soft knock came at the door. Lena stepped inside worry written across her face.

"I heard" she said quietly.

Marcus nodded. "I didn't see another way."

"There's always another way" Lena replied. "He wants to break you in front of everyone."

Marcus stood. "And if I don't show up. What then. Your parents will see him as the only choice. And I'll look like a man who stepped aside."

"You don't have to prove anything to me" Lena said. "I already know who you are."

"I know" Marcus replied gently. "But this isn't just about you. It's about everything I've fought to rebuild."

She looked at him for a long moment then nodded slowly though fear stayed in her eyes.

The next day arrived too quickly.

By evening the court was packed. People stood on fences rooftops sidewalks. Hammond waited near the sideline arms crossed watching closely.

Adrian arrived last. Custom jersey. Bright shoes. Confident smile. The crowd greeted him like royalty.

Marcus walked in quietly. Plain clothes. No display. But when he stepped onto the court something shifted. Those who had watched his rise over the past weeks felt it.

Adrian bounced the ball spinning it on his finger. He grinned. "Ready to lose in front of everyone."

Marcus dropped into his stance. Calm. Focused.

"Play."

The whistle sounded.

And the town held its breath.
