Chapter 9 - The Register

"We've got to check the register then, don't we?" asked Naruto. He tried to recall everything the frog had told him when he was entrusted with the Time Scroll.

"Yes," replied the stranger. "The register will contain a log of any interdimensional activity in your world. It's powerful magic. As long as the register stays clean, you're fine."

"Yeah, I've been told nothing ever shows up in the register," Naruto said reluctantly. "I guess that's changed."

He performed a summoning jutsu, and with a burst of smoke, a human-sized scroll appeared. Naruto set it on the ground and unrolled it slightly. Inside were multiple sets of instructions for various Timekeeper-related activities. It looked like an instruction manual. This was all very new to him, and he didn't quite know what to make of it. He did his best to play along and remember everything the frog had told him. He knew this was serious business.

"Right," said Naruto after scanning the scroll for a few moments. "For the register, I place one hand on the scroll and perform this jutsu."

After a series of hand signs, another puff of smoke appeared. When it cleared, the grass beneath revealed fresh engravings—markings that formed a table or an index. He was impressed by the form of it all, strange as it was.

"This is all the data for the previous two years," said Naruto, staring at the engravings.

The stranger studied the entries. There were only two rows of information carved into the ground.

"In the last two years," began the stranger, "there are only two incidents, and they both happened today. The register shows logs: a time in, a time out, and the origin and destination universes. Every universe has a unique number assigned to it. It's quite an elaborate system, built by the Council of Time and Space." He pointed to the first row. "This entry shows someone came here from my universe and then left for another. I'll have to run that exit code through the Council to find out where he went. Looks like he spent only three hours here, which is good news—for you."

Naruto nodded. The workings of the register aligned perfectly with how the frog had described it.

"This second entry," the stranger pointed to the next row, "doesn't have an exit time or a destination code because it's me. I haven't left yet."

Naruto nodded again. The stranger exhaled slowly, relief washing over his face.

"Well, it looks like there's not much to worry about since he's already left," the stranger said calmly. "But there are still a few things you need to do to make sure everything stays the way it is. I'll tell you."
