Wayne was still staring at Dayo when the room seemed to lose its ordinary shape.
"I didn't send that message," Wayne said again. "I swear I didn't."
Dayo looked at the phone on Wayne's desk, then at Wayne. The message was still there on his own screen. He had read it several times on the drive back, but seeing Wayne standing in front of him made it harder to explain.
"You're sure?"
Wayne picked up his own phone and checked the screen. "I didn't even see anything come through. My phone has been here the whole time."
Dayo reached for the chair beside the desk and pulled it out without sitting.
Something was wrong.
His mind went back to the moment he had left the office. He had been on his way home. Luna had called to tell him she was going to the meeting, Bella had called about the emergency with her brother, and Jennifer was supposed to be at home under protection.
Then the message had arrived.
He had turned around.
Dayo stopped moving.
"Jennifer."
