Chapter 7 - MEETING MYSTIQUE

The Boston mansion felt eerily quiet without Edward's parents. He walked through the main hallway, still shaken from his encounters with the Frost family.

A soft knock came from the kitchen entrance.

Edward looked up to see a young woman in a maid's uniform standing there. She appeared to be around twenty-one, with auburn hair pulled back and green eyes that seemed too alert.

"Can I help you?" Edward asked.

"I'm here about the housekeeping position," she said with a polite smile.

Something felt wrong immediately. Edward's mother hadn't mentioned hiring anyone.

Queen Medusa AI (mental panel activation):

"Scanning behavioral patterns... Multiple anomalies detected."

"Subject movement inconsistent with domestic staff training."

"Posture suggests combat readiness despite casual appearance."

"Recommend caution."

"What position?" Edward asked carefully.

"The temporary maid job. Mrs. Boston arranged it through an agency."

Edward's eyes narrowed. His family used a cleaning service, not individual maids.

"My mother didn't tell me about this," he said.

The woman's smile faltered for just a second. "Perhaps there was a miscommunication."

"Maybe. What's your name?"

"Mary. Mary Smith."

Queen Medusa AI (mental panel update):

"Voice stress analysis indicates deception. Name likely fabricated."

"Micro-expressions suggest subject is experienced at lying."

"Warning: Subject maintains perfect weight distribution - martial arts training detected."

Edward took a step closer. "Mary Smith. That's a pretty common name."

"My parents weren't creative."

Before Edward could respond, the woman moved. Her hand shot toward his throat with lightning speed.

But Queen Medusa had uploaded thousands of combat techniques into Edward's muscle memory. He caught her wrist and twisted, using her momentum to spin her around.

"Who are you really?" Edward demanded, applying pressure to force her down.

She tried to break free, but Edward's enhanced reflexes kept pace with her movements. They grappled across the marble floor, her body pressed against his as they fought for control.

"What's your name?" Edward pressed, pinning her shoulders to the ground.

The woman's body felt solid and warm beneath him. Her breathing was controlled despite the struggle.

"You're stronger than you look," she said with genuine surprise.

Suddenly, her skin began to ripple. Edward watched in fascination as pale pink flesh shifted to deep sapphire blue. Her auburn hair darkened to red. Her green eyes turned bright yellow.

Her entire body structure changed, becoming more muscular and athletic. The conservative maid uniform stretched tight across her transforming form.

"Holy shit," Edward breathed.

Queen Medusa AI (mental panel alert):

"MUTANT IDENTIFIED: Mystique (Raven Darkhölme)"

"Classification: Omega-level shapeshifter"

"Abilities: Perfect physical mimicry including voice, scent, fingerprints"

"Enhanced healing factor and immunity to telepathic detection while shapeshifted"

"Threat Level: EXTREMELY HIGH"

"Warning: Known assassin and terrorist operative"

The blue-skinned woman looked up at him with those golden eyes. Even in this position, she radiated dangerous beauty.

"Well," she said, her voice now deeper and more confident. "That cover's completely blown."

"You're Mystique," Edward said. It wasn't a question.

"Guilty as charged." She tested his grip, finding it still firm. "So what now? Are you going to turn me in?"

Edward's mind raced. According to Queen Medusa's database, Mystique was one of the most dangerous mutants alive. She had toppled governments and eliminated world leaders.

"Why are you here?" he asked.

"Running. Always running." Her yellow eyes showed genuine exhaustion. "The government wants to dissect me. Religious fanatics want to burn me. Normal humans just want me dead."

"So you decided to break into my house?"

"Rich families never notice the help. It seemed like good cover." She studied his face. "But you're not like most humans, are you?"

Edward kept his grip firm but didn't hurt her. "What makes you say that?"

"You're not screaming. You're not trying to call the police. Most people see my real form and lose their minds with terror."

Edward looked down at her carefully. Her blue skin was smooth and warm. She was beautiful in an otherworldly way, despite being a known killer.

"You're different than I expected," he admitted.

"Different how?"

"Less monster. More person."

Something flickered in Mystique's eyes. "That's not what most people think."

"Most people are idiots."

She actually laughed at that. "True enough."

Edward made a decision that could get him killed. He released her shoulders and sat back.

"You said you need shelter," he said.

Mystique sat up slowly, rubbing her wrists. "I did."

"I could use a secretary. Someone intelligent, adaptable, good with languages."

She stared at him like he'd grown a second head. "You want to hire me? A wanted mutant terrorist?"

"Think about it. You can look like anyone. You probably speak multiple languages."

"Seventeen languages, actually."

"Perfect qualifications." Edward smiled slightly. "Plus, I have to admit - I've never dated a mutant before. Could be interesting."

Mystique's mouth fell open. "You're asking me out?"

"I'm suggesting we get to know each other. See what happens."

"I could kill you in your sleep."

"Will you?"

"No," she said without hesitation.

"Then we're good."

For the first time since her transformation, Mystique looked genuinely vulnerable. Tears formed in her golden eyes.

"You're serious."

"Dead serious. Everyone deserves a chance at something better."

"Even dangerous mutant terrorists?"

"Especially them. They're the ones who need chances the most."

Edward touched her blue cheek gently. Her skin was surprisingly soft.

"So what do you think, lady?" he said with a grin. "You need shelter and food. I need a secretary for my future plans. What do you think? What's your real name?"

Mystique's breathing quickened at his touch. She covered her body self-consciously with her hands.

"Free me first!" she said, but her voice lacked real anger.

Edward chuckled and moved back to give her space. "You can change to any appearance you want?"

"Within human limits, yes."

"That's incredible. Can you show me your blue appearance again sometime?"

Mystique shifted back to her natural blue form, then immediately changed to appear as a young human woman with brown hair and hazel eyes.

"There," she said, covering herself modestly. "More acceptable?"

"Both forms are beautiful," Edward said honestly.

Mystique stared at him in shock. No one had ever called her blue form beautiful before.

Suddenly, her legs gave out. Edward caught her before she hit the marble floor.

"When's the last time you ate?" he asked, concerned.

"Three days ago. Maybe four. I've been running non-stop since Chicago."

Edward scooped her up in his arms. She felt surprisingly light despite her muscular build. "Come on. Let's get some food in you."

He carried her to the main guest bedroom and set her gently on the bed. She immediately curled up on her side, exhaustion finally overwhelming her survival instincts.

"The bathroom's through that door," Edward said, pointing. "Clean towels are in the closet. I'll bring you something to eat."

"Edward," she said softly.

"Yeah?"

"My real name is Raven. Raven Darkhölme."

"Nice to meet you, Raven."

"Why are you helping me?"

Edward sat on the edge of the bed. "Well, may be because you are beautiful"

Raven smiled - the first genuine smile he'd seen from her. "You're either very brave or very stupid."

"Probably both."

Edward headed to the kitchen to prepare food. His mind was already working through the implications.

According to Queen Medusa's database, Mystique was supposed to end up at Xavier's school eventually, where she would find redemption and family.

But maybe she didn't have to take that journey alone.

Queen Medusa AI (final assessment):

"Timeline deviation detected. Mystique diverted from expected path to Xavier Institute."

"Potential consequences unknown. Recommend extreme caution."

"Personal observation: Subject responds positively to genuine acceptance."

"Warning: Subject remains extremely dangerous despite apparent gratitude."

Edward returned with a tray of food and water. Raven was already asleep, her blue form curled peacefully on the white sheets.

He set the tray on the bedside table and settled into the chair nearby. Someone needed to keep watch.
